  1. Obama pours on charm to boost U.S.-Britain bond

LONDON — In the splendor of Buckingham Palace and even a fast game of table tennis with British kids, President Barack Obama spent a full day of his European tour on Tuesday tending to and underlining the importance of U.S. relations with England. Along the way, baby boomers Barack and Michelle Obama cemented their deepening friendship with the 85-year-old queen.

In toasting Queen Elizabeth II at only the second state dinner the British have ever thrown for an American president, Obama called her “a living witness to the power of our alliance and a chief source of its resilience.”

The queen, in turn, described the relationship between the two countries as “tried, tested and, yes, special.

Tuesday’s state visit was all about images-with-a-message before Obama delves into the gritty details of foreign policy with British Prime Minister David Cameron on the last day of his visit to England, and makes an address to Parliament reassuring Europe about its place in American foreign policy. At the same time, the president kept one eye on the devastating Midwest tornadoes at home, scheduling a visit to Missouri on Sunday as soon as he returns from his four-nation tour of Europe.

In the formality and ceremony of the president’s state visit in London — and in the unscripted personal moments that played out within that framework — Obama was working to shore up the U.S. relationship with Britain and to further his efforts to see Western allies shoulder a greater share of the burden in addressing trouble spots around the globe.

Tuesday was a day for over-the-top pomp: Not just a 21-gun salute, but a 41-gun salute at the palace (20 extras because the shots were fired from a royal park) and an additional 62-gun salute from the Tower of London (21 bonus booms because they were fired within the city of London, palace officials explained).

      God bless the Queen!

  2. Obama England State Dinner A Lavish Affair

LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II has used her speech at a state dinner honoring Barack and Michelle Obama to celebrate common bonds between the United States and Britain that she says go beyond military and diplomatic ties.

The queen opened the lavish state dinner at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday by recalling fond memories of her earlier meetings with the Obamas. And she said that the U.S. and Britain in most cases see world problems in the same light.

The queen said the U.S.-U.K relationship is – in her words – “tried, tested and, yes, special.”

  3. Obama gets the royal treatment

LONDON — Even for an American president, the extravagant scene at Buckingham Palace could seem surreal.
For two nights, President Barack Obama is calling this 775-room palace home, sleeping in the same suite where Prince William and wife Catherine spent their wedding night, dressing in white tie and tails for only the second state dinner for a U.S. president and receiving a toast from Queen Elizabeth in front of royalty and movie stars.

  4. Michelle Obama wows Brits with her style

There weren’t any hugs, like last time, but US First Lady Michelle Obama shared a warm handshake with the Queen.

Mrs Obama captured the nation’s attention in 2009 when she affectionately put her arm on Queen Elizabeth II’s back in a minor breach of protocol.

On Tuesday, Mrs Obama started the day off when she briefly shook the Queen’s hand at a Buckingham Palace ceremony. Her three dress changes throughout the day were closely watched by the British media – the BBC, among others, spent much of its air time before the evening’s white-tie state dinner excitedly speculating on what she might wear for the occasion.

Her choices – including her white Tom Ford evening gown – wowed fashion critics. The Guardian noted the tone of ‘cheerful informality’ her day outfits imparted, and praised her for bringing ‘style and substance to the palace’.

The first lady is expected to travel to Oxford on Wednesday to speak to London schoolgirls spending a day at the college town as part of a program she has supported since her last visit to England. The students are from the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language College, which Mrs Obama visited in April 2009.

The Obamas are staying at Buckingham Palace during their brief visit.
