Mark Shields On American Optimism & Politics

Columnist Mark Shield recently delivers the Eugene J. McCarthy lecture at St. John’s University.  I listened to the lecture on MPR during my lunch hour today.  It’s  really worth a listen.  Shield provides anecdotes, history, humor, and optimism.  Listening to him was a breath of fresh air.  Although, I would have answered the lady’s question about what is missing in the leadership of President Obama differently.

Mark Shields:  “Republicans have to fall in line, Democrats have to fall in love” …LOL

And remember this classic after the January Tucson shooting?   “We saw a white, Catholic, Republican federal judge murdered on his way to greet a Democratic [Jewish Congresswoman]. Her life was saved initially by a 20-year-old Mexican-American college student, and eventually by a Korean-American combat surgeon. And then it was all eulogized and explained by our African-American president… That’s a remarkable statement about the country.”-  Mark Shields

You can listen to the lecture in its entirety here.

 Your thoughts?
