Investigators hunt for clues in Boston bombing

Snip

The White House said the bombings would be treated as “an act of terror” and President Barack Obama vowed that those responsible would “feel the full weight of justice.”

The attack was the worst on American soil since September 11, 2001, when al Qaeda militants flew hijacked airliners into New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing nearly 3,000 people.

Terrorism and Privilege: Understanding the Power of Whiteness
    Posted on April 16, 2013
    Tim Wise

As the nation weeps for the victims of the horrific bombing in Boston yesterday, one searches for lessons amid the carnage, and finds few. That violence is unacceptable stands out as one, sure. That hatred — for humanity, for life, or whatever else might have animated the bomber or bombers — is never the source of constructive human action seems like a reasonably close second.
But I dare say there is more; a much less obvious and far more uncomfortable lesson, which many are loathe to learn, but which an event such as this makes readily apparent, and which we must acknowledge, no matter how painful.

It is a lesson about race, about whiteness, and specifically, about white privilege.
I know you don’t want to hear it. But I don’t much care. So here goes.
White privilege is knowing that even if the Boston Marathon bomber turns out to be white, his or her identity will not result in persons like yourself being singled out for suspicion by law enforcement, or the TSA, or the FBI.

White privilege is knowing that even if the bomber turns out to be white, no one will call for your group to be profiled as terrorists as a result, subjected to special screening, or threatened with deportation.

White privilege is knowing that if the bomber turns out to be white, he or she will be viewed as an exception to an otherwise non-white rule, an aberration, an anomaly, and that he or she will be able to join the ranks of Tim McVeigh and Terry Nichols and Ted Kaczynski and Eric Rudolph and Joe Stack and George Metesky and Byron De La Beckwith…. AND THE LIST GOES ON 7 ON..

The Worst Conservative Reactions To The Boston Bombings
Blog ››› 4 hours and 45 minutes ago ››› MATT GERTZ

As the nation mourned the April 15 bombings at the Boston Marathon, media figures used the attacks to offer conspiracy theories, make Islamophobic comments, and push petty political and personal attacks.

Conspiracy Radio Host Alex Jones: U.S. Gov’t Is “Prime Suspect” In Attack

Radio host and noted conspiracy theorist Alex Jones responded to the bombings by suggesting that they may have been a “false flag” operation staged by the government:

Medford Woman Killed in Marathon Bombings
    llison Goldsberry

A 29-year-old Medford woman is one of the three victims who was killed on Monday in the bomb attacks at the Boston Marathon.

The woman, another victim, and 8-year-old Martin Richard of Dorchester were killed.

Krystle Campbell is a 2001 Medford High School graduate.

Krystle’s father, William A. Campbell Jr., told Yahoo News he’s in shock that his daughter was killed.

“My daughter was the most lovable girl. She helped everybody and I’m just so shocked right now. We’re just devastated,” he said. “She was a wonderful, wonderful girl. Always willing to lend a hand.”

Campbell said his daughter was at the finish line to cheer on her boyfriend, who was running the marathon.

Hordon Health released the following statement on Facebook:

“Please take a moment to read… Light a Candle, Say a Prayer for our loss…

Hordon HEALTH lost a member of its extended family yesterday at the Boston Marathon. Her name was Krystle Campbell, and she died instantly yesterday at the bombings. Krystle could easily have been described as the salt of the earth, but her complexity demands more…

Obama says Boston blasts being investigated as ‘act of terrorism’

In an appearance at the White House Tuesday morning, President Obama for the first time called the attacks in Boston an “act of terrorism.” “Given what we now know about the attacks,” Obama said, “the FBI is investigating it as an act of terrorism.” But Obama also said federal authorities don’t yet know who carried out the attack and why. “We don’t know whether it was planned or executed by a foreign terrorist organization,” Obama said. He also added that, “The American people refused to be terrorized.”

    Lone Gunman Theory
    By mistermix April 16th, 2013

Just a reminder that the last domestic bombing at a sports event was the Atlanta Centennial Park, it was part of a series by a right-wing extremist whose other targets were abortion clinics and a lesbian bar, and the media frenzy surrounding false accusations arguably ruined the life of Richard Jewell, who was actually a hero whose actions saved lives. In other words, it was pretty much the opposite of 9/11 (domestic not foreign perpetrator, individual not group, aimed at internal not international politics). Yet all the references that I heard on the teevee yesterday were to 9/11.

All speculation about who did this is premature and pointless, but if people with hundreds of hours of airtime to fill have to speculate, I hope they can remember that there were other events in our history besides 9/11. And that they’re very rare. (via)

The Date and Location Could Yield Significant Clues In the Boston Terror Attack
    By: RmuseApr. 16th, 2013

Speculation is the process of thinking about possibilities, or a particular conclusion arrived at from assumptions about a subject without firm evidence to support a claim. It is a human being’s natural tendency to make unsubstantiated assumptions when there are no concrete explanations for a tragic event, and after the bombings at the Boston Marathon yesterday, after the shock, sadness, and anger subsided into semi-rational thought, the first inclination was to speculate on who planted the bombs that wreaked havoc and carnage on innocent Americans. Although it is much too early to blame any specific terror group for the bombings, it is not too early to note the significance of the date and location that make speculating the bombings were a domestic terror attack as reasonable assumption as not.

Over the past three years, so-called “patriot” groups have called for civil war, race war, and outright rebellion against the United States government’s unfair taxation and attacks on personal liberty. Several militant groups have panted for a government crackdown to initiate a violent response from patriots to “take their country back” and “water the tree of liberty” with blood harkening back to the Revolutionary War and the idea that patriots will battle oppressive government to preserve their liberties. Yesterday, in Boston, the home of America’s first Tea Party and original patriot uprising, it was “Patriot Day” as well as “tax day” that marked the earliest beginnings of the Koch brothers anti-government tea party.

3 killed, more than 140 hurt by bombs at Marathon
By Mark Arsenault | GLOBE STAFF APRIL 16, 2013

Two bomb blasts, 12 seconds apart, rocked the finish line of the 117th running of the Boston Marathon Monday, killing at least three people, including an 8-year-old Dorchester boy, wounding more than 140, and leaving the sidewalks of Boylston Street covered in blood.

    Graphic: Timeline of explosions
    More coverage of the attack

Medical professionals on hand to care for blisters and sore knees in Copley Square suddenly found themselves treating life-threatening lacerations and lost limbs, as a high holiday in Boston, Patriots Day, turned into an epic tragedy. Emergency workers rushed to the scene, despite the very real possibility of more blasts.

The explosions blew out windows, sent plumes of smoke into the sky, and left victims piled on each other in a scene far more reminiscent of a battlefield than a celebrated day in Boston’s Back Bay. The blasts occurred at 2:50 p.m., several hours after the elite runners had finished the race.

About 30 people were transferred to hospitals under a Code Red, meaning life-threatening injuries, which may point to a rising death toll, said a law enforcement official.

Flags were lowered to half-staff in Washington, D.C., and around the nation, as the country mourned with Boston.
