Ginger Howard: Youngest Black Female Golfer to Turn Pro

Even before you notice the smooth, powerful swing that has helped propel her to the brink of stardom at only 17, you see something else that defines Ginger Howard and her precocious golf game…the smile. It lights up her face, as she talks about her life and dreams.
Ginger has become a member of the LPGA at the right age of 17, the youngest ever. There’s a good chance you haven’t heard much if anything about Howard yet, but all that could change very soon. If things go they way they’ve been heading, we may soon become well-acquainted with the million-dollar smile and formidable style that has been lighting up the ranks.
And the story could ultimately entwine a Williams Sisters tennis twist, because waiting in the wings is 16-year-old sister Robbi, a prodigy in her own right.
Ginger follows other notable black golfers such as, tennis great Althea Gibson was the first black female to play on tour. Gibson broke through in 1963 and played in 171 tournaments until 1971. From 1967-80, Renee Powell also held an LPGA Tour card. More recently, LaRee Pearl Sugg played full-time in 1995, ’96, 2000 and ’01. Also, Andia Winslow missed the cut in her one event in 2006. (NFL Hall of Famer, Kellen Winslow, Sr., is her uncle.)

Juanita Bynum Allegedly Arrested for Not Paying Her Debts

Juanita Bynum, the respected megapastor and televangelist, has allegedly been placed under arrest. According to the site Obnoxious.TV, Bynum has been placed under arrest due to a Capius Warrant, which relates to a court judgement or failure to appear in court. AllChristianNews.com wrote on the matter, explaining the nature of the warrant. While Bynum certainly appears to be in jail, it doesn’t look like she’s done anything extraordinarily illegal.

We’re not here giving legal advice, but here’s a summary of what a Capias Warrant represents. These warrants are typically given out to those who have the ability to pay a court ordered judgement but have refused to pay for some reason. The person may spend time in jail or have such a warrant issued after losing a civil court judgement. They can also be issued for failing to appear in court or refusing to pay a fine. In other words, the person is being compelled to do something.
With the courts now allowing for far more debtor incarceration than before, Bynum may be in trouble. She has been hit with quite a few lawsuits and there are rumors about her having financial problems. So, this might be a wakeup call for Bynum, and we hope that she gets her financial situation together.

Nearly 55 Percent of Black Women Breαstfeed, Up from 35 Percent In the 70s
There are a wealth of benefits that are associated with breαstfeeding. In addition to bonding with the baby and providing it nutritional health, you quickly lose that “baby fat” acquired from pregnancy. Although African-American women breαstfeed less than any other race, the percentage of African-American women breαstfeeding today is nearly 55 percent, in comparison to just 35 percent in the 70s.

Are Koreans Intentionally Keeping Blacks Out of the Hair Weave Industry?
Hair weave is one of the most profitable businesses in the world. According to Devin Robinson, owner of Atlanta’s Beauty Supply Institute, approximately 9,800 beauty supply business existed nationwide; but only a little more than 300 were black-owned. Robinson attributes the lack of African-American business owners in the industry to the cost mark-ups enforced by Koreans.
“The Koreans strategically make it harder for us to get into the business. They have the supplies the customers want,” Robinson said. “They sell it to us at higher prices or they deliver the products late to the black-owned stores. Sometimes they don’t allow orders from us at all.”
According to CascadePatch, the Korean-American community has dominated the black beauty supply market for almost 50 years by opening large stores, buying out smaller black-owned ones and using the faces of black celebrities on their products and black employees in their stores to grow their businesses in the black community. Lucien Poko, general manager for Beauty Masters, one of the larger Korean-owned beauty supply stores with seven locations in Atlanta, said 90 to 95 percent of the stores’ customers are black; and so are the store’s employees. Poko doesn’t believe there is an intentional effort on behalf of the Korean community to keep Blacks out of the industry. “It’s just business,” Poko, who is from Senegal, said. “Everybody is free to open what they want to open. It’s the way you handle your business. Koreans dominating the business, this doesn’t make sense. You can open up your business. You are free to do what you want.”

Wave of Support to Replace Boat Ruined in Bomber’s Standoff With Cops

America wants to help David Henneberry get a new boat.
The Watertown, Mass., resident became a hero when he discovered suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev hiding in his backyard boat.
Henneberry quickly called the cops and in a final standoff, his boat was riddled with bullet holes.
“That boat’s his baby. He takes care of it like you wouldn’t believe. And they told him it’s all shot up,” Henneberry’s friend and neighbor George Pizzuto told ABC News. “He’s going to be heartbroken.”
Today, people around the country want to make help mend that broken heart.
Deborah Newberry, 62, of Orlando, Fla., has already put a $25 check in the mail to Henneberry’s home.
“Something told him to go and check things,” Newberry told ABCNews.com. “I just want him to know that people care about him because I know he’s probably the guy that would say, ‘Well, that’s okay.’ But I just would like him to know that we’re all thinking about him and appreciate his spirit.”
She believes Henneberry had to be “awfully, awfully cool” to emerge from a daylong lockdown, notice something wrong with his boat, find a bloody man in it and slip away to call police.
“Just listening to his coolness and how he handled the situation, it was like okay, that is a man who needs to have his boat restored,” Newberry said.
When asked if she sent Henneberry any note with the check Newberry said no, she simply wrote, “towards a new boat” on the check.
“He don’t know me from Joe Turkey,” she said with a laugh. “I want him to go back to his regular little things that he do and don’t have to worry about having a boat.”

Public Enemy Was Overdue: Chuck D on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

They were a singular act that didn’t shy away from topics like racism. So why hasn’t the rap act’s massive influence been recognized sooner? A talk with Chuck D.
“There goes the neighborhood!” Those are the words Carlton Ridenhour, better known as rapper Chuck D, admits were going through his mind as he stood on stage Thursday night in Los Angeles at the induction ceremonies of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
As the frontman for the seminal Public Enemy, Chuck D, along with Terminator X, Professor Griff, and Flavor Flav, turned hip-hop on its head with the release of their second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, more than 25 years ago this month. Their debut album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, was also critically acclaimed.
Still, it was arguably their second album that forced the mainstream masses to take notice of the four young men (one wearing a large plate-size clock around his neck no less) from Roosevelt, on New York’s Long Island.
Nation of Millions spoke bluntly about America’s rampant racism America in the ’80s and with hit records like “Don’t Believe the Hype’’ and “Bring the Noise.’’ The Village Voice voted it the top album of 1988, an honor that had never been awarded for a hip-hop act.
“It’s good to look back from time to time to see where you impacted change or if you impacted change. I had parents who encouraged me to speak out and say what was on my mind and speak my truth,” Chuck D said, after a sound check at The House of Blues in Los Angeles Tuesday. “I think PE wanted to make change in some way through the music and we did in the way we said what we said and how we said it. Unfortunately, parents like mine aren’t around that much today—parents that teach their kids to know something about something so they can talk about it.”
Public Enemy and its members knew quite a bit about “something” and their music revealed that knowledge with every release. Albums offered stories and history from an African-American perspective, often sampling the voices of Malcolm X and other black leaders to drive their point home.
“It was always about the knowledge,” said Chuck D. “And it still is. The beat can be bumping and the content can be amusing at times. But there can still be information in there for the mind.”
In 1990 came Fear of a Black Planet, with songs like “Welcome to the Terrordome,” and “911 Is a Joke,” a track that famously criticized emergency-response units for taking longer to arrive in black communities than in white ones. The record was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress in 2005.
