Benghazi Bullshit: The Real Scandal is the Media Pretending that Republicans Aren’t Lying
    By: Sarah JonesMay. 19th, 2013

The press is very busy and important moving forward the narrative that there’s a scandal. Oh, you might be impressed at first that they’ve finally found the courage so clearly missing during the Bush years, when they scraped the lies of off the administration’s feet with subservience and deference befitting propaganda outlets.

But you’d only be impressed if you didn’t look any deeper. You see, there is one consistency here and that is that when Republicans lie to the press, the public, and Congress, from WMD to Benghazi, the press carries their water like the corporate serfs they are.

They are not doing this to hold the executive branch accountable. They are doing it because this is the only time they have any balls at all, and they must make a show of it. They haven’t the courage to stand up to corporate Republicans in Congress because their corporate bosses need their Republican stooges to deregulate them for the profit. They haven’t the integrity to stand up to Bush’s WMD. But boy oh boy, can they stand up for phony Benghazi bullshit!

      Tax-Free Like You and Me

The GOP wants to protect tax-exempt organizations—until it realizes that it may want to target liberal groups one day.

By David Weigel|Posted Thursday, May 16, 2013, at 6:35 PM

A little more than a year ago, around the time nascent Tea Party organizations started getting Proust-length questionnaires from the IRS, there emerged a scandal about political groups winning tax-exempt status. Left-wing groups. The Daily Caller shared pages of memos and anecdotes from Media Matters for America, then shared quotes from Republicans asking why a liberal press-watching organization deserved 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

“The standards for tax exemption deserve review as a matter of good stewardship on the part of Congress,” Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley told the website, “and should be considered as part of any comprehensive tax reform.”

At least! “The collaboration that they talk about on a weekly basis with the White House means this is a political operation,” shuddered Sean Hannity on his Fox News show, in one of many conservative kibitzes about the Media Matters stories. “This is not a 501(c)(3)—you know, tax-exempt organization. This sounds like a political organization and close collaboration with the White House.”

U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin, delivers commencement address at Hampton University
    7:06 AM EDT
    5/14/2013 by Rolling Out

The rain was coming down pretty hard on Sunday, May 12, 2013, hours before the commencement ceremony’s start and then with about 15 minutes to go, the the clouds cleared, and the sun started to shine. It was still drizzling when Dr. William R. Harvey, president of Hampton University, started the processional onto the field at Armstrong Stadium but by the time he reached the stage, the rain stopped. Harvey joked about still being in communication with “The Weather Man.” The energy was intense and the graduates were truly excited, the rain was not going to stop this show and that was apparent!

The university’s 143rd commencement speaker was U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, who received an honorary Doctor of Science degree. She spoke about dignity and that we need to be careful not to take it away from people. She quoted stats, saying Hampton is the fourth HBCU in ranking and mentioned that Hampton University sent The AIM satellite into space to study climate change. She finished by reminding graduates that it is their duty to take the education received and serve their fellow men and women and to know that they have support from their alma mater, facility, staff, etc., no matter where they go.

President Harvey ended the ceremony with the charge to be positive roles models, to be leaders in your respected fields. He urged them to do several other things: 1. Pay yourself first 2. Buy some property 3. And two evils in society — racism and drugs — avoid both

What Republicans Already Knew About The White House Benghazi Emails
    Brian Beutler May 17, 2013, 7:14 PM

Sources with knowledge of key congressional briefings earlier this year on administration emails regarding the Sept 11, 2012 Benghazi attack tell TPM that those in attendance were provided clear information that the White House remained neutral in adjudicating a dispute between the State Department and the CIA over talking points at the center of a months-long controversy.

In walking members and their staffs through the internal emails, the administration provided extensive explanations of how the talking points evolved, sources in attendance tell TPM. The extent of the information provided in the classified briefings calls into further question how a summary of the emails that was leaked to ABC News overstated the White House’s role in crafting them. An intelligence official who participated in the briefings and spoke to TPM says that the discrenpacy between the emails he briefed Congress about and the ABC News report “speak for itself.”

The semi-dormant controversy over the Obama administration’s conduct during and after the attack on a U.S. outpost in Benghazi re-erupted last week when ABC News’ Jonathan Karl published a report that lent credence to GOP suspicions that the White House was deeply involved in preparing official talking points about the attack to tamp down the story for political reasons.

The ABC report was based on notes taken by a still-unnamed source, presumably a Republican, in attendance at one of two briefings the administration held for members and senior staffers of the Senate and House intelligence committees and top leadership offices in February and March of this year. The ABC report contained a great deal of the information the White House would ultimately reveal itself this week when it released all of the inter- and intra-agency email communication that ultimately resulted in the talking points Susan Rice used in a now-infamous series of appearances on network news shows on the Sunday after the attack.

But it got one big part about the White House’s role wrong:

In an email dated 9/14/12 at 9:34 p.m. — three days after the attack and two days before Ambassador Rice appeared on the Sunday shows — Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes wrote an email saying the State Department’s concerns needed to be addressed. “We must make sure that the talking points reflect all agency equities, including those of the State Department, and we don’t want to undermine the FBI investigation. We thus will work through the talking points tomorrow morning at the Deputies Committee meeting.”

It turns out that’s not what the email said. To quiet the growing furor over the idea that the White House had thumbed the scale on the State Department’s behalf, a government official subsequently leaked to CNN the full text of Rhodes’ message, which was assiduously neutral about each relevant agency’s concerns.

But discussions with several people in attendance at or with knowledge of the two congressional briefings suggest that members and staffers were left with the opposite impression — that the White House had remained neutral in the dispute between the State Department and the CIA — and that after a thorough run-through, they were given ample time to take notes not just about the briefing itself, but in theory to transcribe key emails verbatim.

“When I say they were allowed to have the documents for as long as they wanted, they were allowed to take notes for as long as they wanted as well,” the intelligence official said.

The discrepancy between the documents ABC was provided and the official records has led White House officials, congressional aides, and outside observers to the conclusion that a GOP member or staffer falsified notes or tendentiously interpreted administration emails — and then leaked them — to create the impression that the White House had sided with the State Department in an intra-agency dispute to protect President Obama from political blowback.

A Washington ‘whodunit’: who fed bogus Benghazi ‘emails’ to the media? **UPDATE: a ‘glaring omission…’**
Posted on May 18, 2013 by jreid

**UPDATE: Scroll to the bottom of the post (I know it’s long…) for a bit of TRR sleuthing…

The revelation this week that emails provided to key congressional committees by the White House in response to Benghazi-hysteria among Republicans, may have been altered before being leaked to the conservative Weekly Standard and to ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl touched off speculation in at least some media quarters.

At issue, who altered or misrepresented the content of emails from Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications and Speechwriting, Ben Rhodes, and from State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, to make the White House and State Department appear to have misled the American people, in a potential Benghazi cover up?

Hmmm, I see CNN is leading the charge with polling for the NEGRO PREZ. I guess this is the clarion call for the networks to step up their attacks to widdle the % down.

A new CNN/ORC International poll indicates that President Barack Obama’s approval rating, now at 53%, has remained essentially unchanged even after the events of last week.

But most Americans take very seriously all three concerns that dominated the news — Benghazi, the IRS scandal, and the subpoena of Associated Press phone records — and most say that Republicans in Congress have not overreacted so far.

A majority of respondents say that they are dissatisfied with the way the Obama administration has handled Benghazi, and a majority finds the actions by the IRS and the Justice Department to be unacceptable.

But a majority also appears to believe the White House message on those topics.

Six in 10 say that Obama’s public comments about the IRS have been completely true or mostly true and 55% say that the IRS employees who targeted conservative groups were acting on their own, not under orders from the White House.

Only 44% believe that the administration’s controversial talking points on Benghazi were an attempt to intentionally mislead the public.
