Monday Open Thread | Frank Sinatra Week

Good Morning.

Happy Memorial Day. If you know a Soldier, thank them for their service.

This week we’re going to take a look at Frank Sinatra.

Francis Albert “Frank” Sinatra, pron.: /sɨˈnɑːtrə/, (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998)[6] was an American singer and film actor. Beginning his musical career in the swing era with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey, Sinatra found unprecedented success as a solo artist from the early to mid-1940s after being signed to Columbia Records in 1943. Being the idol of the “bobby soxers”, he released his first album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra in 1946. His professional career had stalled by the 1950s, but it was reborn in 1953 after he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in From Here to Eternity. He signed with Capitol Records in 1953 and released several critically lauded albums (such as In the Wee Small Hours, Songs for Swingin’ Lovers!, Come Fly with Me, Only the Lonely and Nice ‘n’ Easy). Sinatra left Capitol to found his own record label, Reprise Records in 1961 (finding success with albums such as Ring-a-Ding-Ding!, Sinatra at the Sands and Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim), toured internationally, was a founding member of the Rat Pack and fraternized with celebrities and statesmen, including John F. Kennedy.

Sinatra turned 50 in 1965, recorded the retrospective September of My Years, starred in the Emmy-winning television special Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music, and scored hits with “Strangers in the Night” and “My Way”. With sales of his music dwindling and after appearing in several poorly received films, Sinatra retired for the first time in 1971. Two years later, however, he came out of retirement and in 1973 recorded several albums, scoring a Top 40 hit with “(Theme From) New York, New York” in 1980. Using his Las Vegas shows as a home base, he toured both within the United States and internationally, until a short time before his death in 1998. Sinatra also forged a highly successful career as a film actor. After winning Best Supporting Actor in 1953, he also garnered a nomination for Best Actor for The Man with the Golden Arm, and critical acclaim for his performance in The Manchurian Candidate. He also starred in such musicals as High Society, Pal Joey, Guys and Dolls and On the Town.

Sinatra was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in 1983 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan in 1985 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997. He was the recipient of eleven Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Trustees Award, Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Sinatra is also one of world’s best-selling artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.[7]

The picture that will break Demi Moore’s heart: Scout Willis wraps her arms around stepmother Emma after dad Bruce supports her at graduation

    By Jennifer Pearson

    PUBLISHED: 19:08 EST, 26 May 2013 | UPDATED: 01:52 EST, 27 May 2013
he was rumoured to have healed her reported rift with her three daughters – Rumer, Scout and Tallulah – earlier last year.

But Demi Moore’s absence at her daughter Scout’s commencement ceremony at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, suggests otherwise.

Instead, Scout was cheered on by her father Bruce Willis and his gorgeous wife Emma.

Also in attendance was Scout’s sisters Tallulah, 19, and Rumer, 24, and her boyfriend Jayson Blair.

The MailOnline had reported last year how Demi’s three daughters had cut contact with their mother following her stint in rehab.

Radar also reported that the supposed rift between Demi and her daughters was caused by the fact that they had remained close to Ashton Kutcher following his split from their mother.

The girls have all stayed friends with Ashton, and that is infuriating Demi,’ a source said at the time.

Then in October last year, Demi reportedly reconciled with eldest daughter Rumer Willis, after Rumer’s boyfriend Jayson orchestrated peace talks between the pair.

But Demi’s no-show at the commencement ceremony throws fresh doubt on their relations.

Obese father who tipped the scales at 24 stone loses HALF his body weight after joining daughter’s slimming class

    By Toni Jones

A 24 stone father who lived on on pies and doughnuts has lost an amazing eleven and a half stone.

Alwyn Beckles, 44, used to tip the scales at almost 25st and had a life-threatening 54in waist.

But now he is half the man he used to be after he was ‘volunteered’ for slimming classes with his stepdaughter.
lwyn, of Burton Gardens, Brierfield, Lancashire, started Slimming World classes in February 2012.

Mr Beckles, a father-of-two and stepfather of six, said: ‘My stepdaughter Sophie said she wanted to start the classes to lose weight before a holiday but she wanted someone to go with her.

‘My wife said she hadn’t got the time but I know someone who has – and I was volunteered for it! I knew it was time to do something about my weight if I wanted to see my children grow up so it was good timing really.

I eat healthily now. I used to eat crisps, cakes and doughnuts as well as pies, now it is a lot of fruit and veg.

‘At first I thought I’ll be thin but I’ll be miserable without the cakes, but after I started to lose weight I didn’t feel hungry and I thought ‘this is great’.

Mr Beckles, whose wife Amanda, 38, has also lost a lot of weight, weighed in last week at 13st 3oz and now has a 34in waist. he was named Man of the Year at the Slimming World group in Nelson.

Mr Beckles, a service engineer for Herbert Retail, said: ‘I feel more confident now and more energetic. I never thought I could lose this much weight.’

Riots Dent Image of Sweden’s Classless Social Model

Is Sweden’s version of the Scandinavian social model broken?

Five straight nights of rioting in the suburbs of Stockholm have dented the country’s international image as a haven of tolerance, prosperity and tranquility.

As the unrest spread from the outlying district of Husby, where it was apparently set off on Sunday by the fatal police shooting of a local man wielding a knife, gangs of youths have torched schools and other public buildings and set alight scores of cars.

The rioting, for which the authorities have sought to blame a small group of troublemakers, has been focused in areas with a majority population of poor immigrants and asylum-seekers.

“I’ve seen in the international media that this is a riot between young people in some parts of Stockholm and the society,” Erik Ullenhag, Sweden’s integration minister, said. “But this is not true. It’s a small proportion.”

Sweden, like its Scandinavian neighbors, is proud of a social model based on cooperative labor relations and a cradle-to-grave welfare system that is credited with having pushed it to the top of international tables of life expectancy, education and standard of living.

The Swedes, with their own currency, have escaped the worst consequences of the euro zone crisis that has afflicted some of their European Union partners.

Stockholm rioting continues for fifth night

Swedish police seek reinforcements after youths set ablaze cars and attack property and schools in poorer suburbs of capital, Friday 24 May 2013 05.27 EDT

Police in Stockholm are to seek reinforcements after youths set cars ablaze and threw stones at police for a fifth night running, officials said.

About 30 cars were set on fire in poorer districts in north-western and south-western parts of the Swedish capital on Thursday night, with rioters causing widespread damage to property, including schools. However, a police spokesman said the overnight violence was less intense than in previous nights.

Despite Sweden’s reputation for equality, the rioting has exposed a faultline between a well-off majority and a minority, often young people with immigrant backgrounds, who cannot find work, lack education and feel marginalised.

“In terms of extent, it is a little less, a little quieter,” said the police spokesman, Kjell Lindgren. Eight people, mostly in their early 20s, were detained during the night.

He said police planned to request reinforcements from other areas to help deal with the rioting as well as upcoming football matches and the wedding of Princess Madeleine, third in line to the throne, on 8 June.

He said the police needed to be prepared to maintain a heavy presence on the streets. “We will do that for days, weeks, as long as it is necessary,” he said.

The violence appears to have been prompted by the death of a 69-year-old man shot by police this month in Husby, now the centre of the rioting.

One recent government study showed that up to a third of young people aged 16 to 29 in some of the most-deprived areas of Sweden’s big cities neither study nor have a job.

The gap between rich and poor in Sweden is growing faster than in any other major nation, according to the OECD, although absolute poverty remains uncommon.

    The Real Scandal

    by BooMan
Mon May 27th, 2013 at 09:54:52 AM EST

I’m glad that the New York Times has finally got around to reporting on the real scandal, which is that oligarchs are using the 501(c)(4) tax status to hide their donations to right-wing Tea Party groups whose only function is to elect Republicans.

It is time to play offense on this issue. People hate the Tea Party and they hate the oligarchs. They hate the resulting dysfunction in Congress. They hate Congress, but these 501(c)(4) groups are a huge factor in why they hate Congress, even if the people don’t really know about them.

The real scandal is that the IRS did not ultimately deny tax-exempt status to even one of these groups, and none of them deserved tax-exempt status because none of them are primarily concerned with social welfare.

    President Obama’s Teflon Coating: Demographics

    Wednesday, May 22, 2013 | Posted by Spandan C at 9:19 AM

So, you know, last week was the worst week ever in the Obama presidency, and the Republicans really got him on the SCANDALS!!!!! See for yourself:

53% of Americans say they approve of the job the president is doing, with 45% saying they disapprove. The president’s approval rating was at 51% in CNN’s last poll, which was conducted in early April. […]

The CNN poll is in-line with Gallup, which also indicated a very slight rise in Obama’s approval rating over the same time period.
Ha! They got him now! Wait, what? His approval rating actually ticked up? That is… but but… Benghazi!!!!!

But there is a more important subtext in these numbers, and it’s demographics. The tectonic shift in demographics that elected and re-elected Barack Obama remains in place, and remains in favor of him. According to the crosstabs, only 41% of whites approve of the president’s performance, while an overwhelming 78% of non-whites approve. Men approve the president’s performance by a 50-49 (+1) margin, while women approve the job he’s doing by 56-42 (+14). That is a 13-point gender gap. Young people (18-34) overwhelmingly approve of the president 63-34, while those over 65 disapprove 44-54.

The disparities persist on questions of whether or not a respondent believes the president and the administration was honest in their responses to these investigations. Republicans remain as successful as ever in scaring a majority of white America and ginning up hatred against this president among the privileged. They remain an abject failure, though, in convincing the rest of us of the same. The demographic internals of this poll may as well be those of the 2012 elections. In other words, Republicans are doing what they know best to try to stir up scandals and gin up controversies, and they are being no more successful than they were last year, and for the exact same reason: a growing diverse American public isn’t buying their mantra about how the Kenyan usurper is destroying America.

Republicans refuse to recognize that this president and his brilliant campaign team has been successful in forever changing the face of the American electorate, quite literally so. They refuse to understand that scaring up their base no longer amounts to scaring up America. They fail to see how anyone takes the sincerity of this president over the scandal-pushing of their side. But if the Republicans aren’t going to realize that, maybe for their own sake in 2014, they should internalize this: people of color love this president, and a witch hunt against him will only drive us to the polls in big numbers next year.

EXCLUSIVE: Parents of underage victim in Kate Hunt’s case defend actions
Story by Jana Eschbach / CBS12 News
Posted by Miranda Grossman / CBS12 News
SEBASTIAN, Fla. — A local teen’s family says she is being unfairly prosecuted for a same-sex relationship. But now a new twist in the case that has gripped the nation.

The parents of the underage victim speak out for the first time only to CBS12, and drop a bombshell that will likely turn this investigation on its head.

Stop the hate, free Kate,” is the Hunt Family’s message. The message directed right at Jim and Laurie Smith, the parents of the former girlfriend, who spoke exclusively to CBS12 to defend their actions, their daughter, and their rights as parents.

“We are not the type of people to go in front of the media,” said Laurie Smith.

First, let’s set the facts straight. Kate was not 17, their daughter not 15.

“Our daughter was 14, and this girl was 18,” said Jim Smith.

The Smiths are portrayed by the Hunt Family as going to the law first.

“It’s not the way it was. It was quite different. We had actually told Miss Hunt that this was wrong,” Laurie told CBS12’s Jana Eschbach.

But, according to the Smiths Kate was warned, not once, but twice to stop.

“Another adult, a mother, came to me and said ‘Ms. Smith you need to know this…we told Miss Hunt to leave your daughter alone. But they are in a relationship, and she’s 18.’ 18? My daughter is only 14,” Laure said.

Their 14-year-old began to act out, and one weekend morning they opened her door and she was gone.

“It’s the worst thing that I’ve ever experienced,” Jim said. “Somebody took her is what we thought. Because her running away is the furthest thing from my mind. You hear kids getting abducted out of your home. That was heart-wrenching.”

Reported missing, and found safe, the Smiths found out she was with Kate, who picked her up even though she had been told to stay away.

“Didn’t stop, then we didn’t have an alternative but to turn to the law, use it as a last resort,” said Jim.

“This whole story about you blaming Kate for making you daughter gay…where did that come from?” asked CBS12’s Jana Eschbach.

“I don’t know. It didn’t come from us. That’s not how we feel,” Jim said.

Bloggers shred Laurie online as a gay-basher, abusive to her daughter.

“They made me seem as if I’m a monster,” Laurie said.

But says they will stand strong.

“I will be her advocate for what she needs,” Laurie said.

Under an intense amount of national media attention their daughter still goes to high school every day. Hearing now that her parents hate gay people, and their worse fear is that their own daughter will begin to believe these lies.

“That’s why I’m talking to you…The stories that people are saying…I love my daughter and I am willing to do whatever to protect her,” Laurie said.

    • Everything you said, Rikyrah! This is nothing about gay rights. This is about the law. There wouldn’t be any question if the 18 year old was a male. His ass would have BEEN in JAIL and no one would have said a damn thing. The law is the law!

DOJ Notified News Corp. About Phone-Record Seizure

The Justice Department notified the parent company of Fox News more than two years ago about its seizure of phone records belonging to one of its reporters, a Fox official said Saturday.

The parent company, News Corp NWSA +0.67% ., didn’t tell Fox about the notification, the Fox official said.

This new detail helps clear up a mystery at the heart of the continuing controversy over the government’s actions. Over the past week, officials at Fox have denied they were notified of the phone-record subpoenas, while law-enforcement officials insisted they were. It appears the reason for the discrepancy was that the notice was sent to News Corp.

A News Corp. spokeswoman confirmed the company was notified in August 2010 and said it was looking into the matter.

Putting on a pointy head mofo (HAYES) with no grasp of bread and butter issues who puts on segments people don’t give a shyt about (DRONES) is why the ratings are down.

    What’s wrong with MSNBC?

MSNBC is having ratings troubles. It came in fourth in April, after Fox, CNN, and HLN. Things have not improved in May. May 13-17 was MSNBC’s lowest-rated week since summer of 2006. So what’s wrong?

We should maybe state at the outset the “fourth place” thing isn’t quite as bad as it sounds, because HLN has been doing insane ratings lately thanks mostly to Jodi Arias (and the channel’s stunning shamelessness in general). HLN is regularly kicking CNN’s ass, too. But it is still pretty bad, considering that last year MSNBC was challenging Fox for ratings dominance some nights. Now, it’s once again far behind the conservative cable news leader. And worse, CNN has finally, apparently, caught up.

One theory, from Deadline Hollywood, is that MSNBC is suffering because Obama is suffering. The crazy scandals we all love hearing about so much are making liberals too dispirited and depressed to tune into their favorite liberal shows, I guess.

Conservatives tend to like this theory. Liberal things failing (Air America, the Current) is usually taken as a sign, on the right, of the broader failure of liberalism. Various right-wingers have been crowing about MSNBC’s ratings woes, with, for some reason, lots of conservatives piling on Chris Hayes, whose new weeknight prime-time show hasn’t been a runaway ratings success. (I have no clue why the right hates Hayes, especially considering that part of his whole deal is that he regularly asks conservatives to appear on his show and then engages with them civilly. He’s not O’Donnell!) Liberal media just aren’t popular, the right cackles, as they also accuse all non-explicitly right-wing media of being radically left-wing.

Homeless Georgia teen graduates as valedictorian
    Sojourner Elleby
    1:12 PM on 05/26/2013

Despite a life of adversity, poverty, and even homelessness, 18-year-old Chelesa Fearce is blazing a trail of academic success. Growing up in Clayton County, Georgia, Chelesa, along with her mother and three siblings, frequently moved from shelter to shelter, even living in her family’s car in times of need.

Regardless of the obstacles in the way, Chelesa stayed focused on her goals: scoring high marks in high school and attending a good college.

Thursday Chelesa graduated with a 4.529 GPA from Charles Drew High School in Clayton County, making her class valedictorian. Thanks to taking college courses for the past two years, Chelesa will enter Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia later this year as a junior.

During Chelesa’s high school years, her mother, Reenita Shepard, was laid off from her job more than once, resulting in the family losing their home. But Chelesa stayed focused on her studies even when bouncing from shelter to shelter, or on those most difficult nights spent in the car.

“At night I just had to open my book in the dark and use my cellphone light, just do what I had to do,” she said.

Even with a heavy workload and irregular living conditions, Chelesa managed to make time for extra-curricular activities. She was a member of her school’s swim team and played the baritone for the Marching Band. Her favorite subjects in high school were chemistry and literature. In her free time, she enjoys reading, swimming, watching action movies and hanging with friends, just like any teenager.

Chelesa admitted that she faced many struggles and at times found it difficult to maintain a positive spirit. “It was hard sometimes. I kept my situation a secret because I didn’t want anyone to know my business; I just went to school and did what I had to do.” Still, there were times it could all be overwhelming. “Senior year was a lot, you know with applying for schools, scholarships and standardized tests and I’d want to sit back and just kick it and relax but I knew I had things to accomplish.”

Part of what kept Chelesa going was her mother. “She works very very hard and I made sure I was doing the same, if not more. She was always helping me out and was such a great support so I had to do it for her,” she said. Shepard often read to Chelesa and her siblings at a young age. “I remember her reading Mrs. Nelson Went Missing, Are You My Mother, a lot of Dr. Seuss. She developed my love for reading at a very early age,” Chelesa said.

At Spelman, Chelesa plans to double major in chemistry and philosophy and is excited to see what will come next. She gives advice for those going through similar situations as hers, “I would tell anyone with obstacles to always keep their faith and to think about the future. Work hard now, so that tomorrow will be worth living
