Harry Reid Reveals that Obamacare Is Step One Towards Single Payer Healthcare
During an interview on Nevada Week In Review, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid revealed that Obamacare is the first steps towards single payer healthcare for all.
According to the Las Vegas Sun:
Now we know why Republicans are so desperate to repeal Obamacare. The ACA is just the beginning of a meaningful healthcare system overhaul. Republicans know that once people experience the full benefits of Obamacare, it is going to be impossible to repeal. Republican lies about healthcare reform are being debunked on a daily basis, and time is running out.
The timing of Senator Reid’s revelation was far from a coincidence. With the sign up period for the insurance exchanges starting soon, and Republicans mounting a last gasp effort to stop Obamacare this summer, the coming weeks are the likely final big showdown over the healthcare law.

The Bossiest Birth Certificate You Ever Did See

Folks have been all up in Kate Middleton’s Love Pocket since she got married to Prince William and it only got worse when she got pregnant. A couple of weeks ago, she finally had the Royal Baby, and the world cheered collectively. Because apparently, we all got a nephew we won’t ever see or know.
I can’t blame those who were excited though. Because you know doggone well folks threw parties when Blue Ivy was born. She’s the closest we have to a royal baby in the U.S. right now.
Anywho, the baby’s birth certificate was just released (Huffington Post got it), filled out by pops William and his chicken scratch handwriting. And I must say that this birth certificate’s content is pretty bad ass.

The only way this birth certificate could be anymore BAWSE is if the ink used to print it was molten 24K gold. Seriously.
First of all, the baby’s name is LEGALLY “His Royal Highness…” You can’t just walk around calling him “George Alexander.” NAWL. If he was to ever have a resumé (laughable but go with me here), he has to put “His Royal Highness Prince George” at the top. That’s pretty damb dope.

Limbaugh: Oprah Denied Handbag Because She’s ‘Fat’

Rush Limbaugh, the conservative talk-show host, hit a new low Friday. He said on his radio program that Oprah’s widely publicized encounter with racism at a Swiss boutique was perhaps because the clerk thought she was “fat,” not because she was black, according to Salon.
Oprah has said in recent interviews that a clerk at Trois Pommes boutique in Zurich, Switzerland refused to show her a $38,000 handbag, intimating that the billionaire media mogul perhaps could not afford it.
On his program, The Rush hypothesized that because “we don’t know that the sales person based her judgment on The Oprah’s skin color,” the store clerk could have denied Winfrey on other grounds: “Maybe it’s because The Oprah’s fat? Well that’s another — how was The Oprah dressed? I mean she didn’t look like The Oprah obviously. Was she wearing jump suit with tennis shoes? Maybe Air Jordans that weren’t laced up?”

Samuel L. Jackson: ‘Open Season’ on Black Men
In his tweet, the actor blasted New York’s refusal to pursue charges in the killing of Ramarley Graham.
On the heels of yesterday’s ruling that charges will not be brought against a New York police officer accused of shooting an unarmed black teen, actor Samuel L. Jackson took to Twitter to voice his opinion.
“Young brothers Beware!!” he tweeted. “It’s Open Season!”
Eighteen-year-old Ramarley Graham was shot and killed in the bathroom of the apartment he shared with his grandmother last year by a police officer pursuing him on suspicion of drug activity. The officer, 31-year-old Richard Haste, claimed that he fired because he believed Graham had a gun. In fact, he was unarmed.
With the conclusion of the Trayvon Martin case and the release of Fruitvale Station, a movie based on the story of Oscar Grant, many are hyperfocused on what they see as the devaluation of black lives in the eyes of the law. Jackson’s tweet captures the sentiment of countless others.

Orlando Sentinel Editor Ousted in Restructuring
Veteran journalist Mark Russell’s tenure was marked by coverage of the Trayvon Martin case and the Florida A&M hazing scandal.
Mark Russell, whose nearly three years as editor of the Orlando Sentinel were marked by coverage of the Trayvon Martin case and the hazing death of a marching band member at Florida A&M University, was ousted Wednesday in a reorganization that eliminated his job.
Russell was replaced by Avido Khahaifa [pdf], a corporate manager who is also African American and for whom the editor’s job will be an additional role. Both men were at the National Association of Black Journalists convention last week in nearby Kissimmee, Fla.
Staffers said Khahaifa, once a journalist but most recently a manager over the business and editorial sides, is a cost-cutter who believes that the newsroom is too large.
“Khahaifa has been with the Sentinel since 2005, most recently as a senior vice president and director of content,” according to a Sentinel story by Jason Garcia. “In his new post, Khahaifa will retain the director-of-content title and will oversee the day-to-day operation of the Sentinel’s newsroom.”
Russell was not present Wednesday when Howard Greenberg, publisher of the Tribune Co.-owned Sentinel, made the newsroom announcement. In a memo, Greenberg said Khahaifa “will add editor responsibilities to his role, and will now oversee the day-to-day Orlando newsroom management, in addition to leading regional editorial strategy.”
Khahaifa also has a management role with the Sentinel’s sister paper, the South Florida SunSentinel.
“With this change, Mark’s direct reports will report to Avido. In South Florida Sun Sentinel Editor Howard Saltz, who previously reported to Avido, will now report to me,” Greenberg’s memo continued.

Or talk to one of 325 specially trained workers who will explain the intricacies and help them enroll. Or get information via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
In Virginia, it’s a different story. People can seek assistance from about two dozen special guides. Or they can go to their state legislators, who might refer them to phone numbers and Web sites operated by the federal government.

Half a century ago, John Lewis, a 23-year-old student leader, stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and looked out a sea of black and white faces. It was 1963, and the crowd had gathered in Washington for the most significant protest of the civil rights era.
Lewis saw hundreds of thousands of people, stretched into the distance; some had climbed trees for a better view, while others stood knee-deep in the memorial’s long rectangular pool. “It was a hot day,” Lewis recalls. “I said to myself: ‘This is it, I must go forward.’ And then I started speaking.”
Now a 73-year-old Democratic congressman, Lewis is the only surviving speaker from the March on Washington, the landmark protest that culminated in Martin Luther King’s famous “I have a dream” speech. He will return to the steps of the memorial later this month for the 50th anniversary of that march, which was a turning point for for the civil rights movement.
The March on Washington gave the campaign for equal rights an unstoppable momentum, helping to pass the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act – the two legislative pillars to emerge from the civil rights era. But according to Lewis, the 50th anniversary comes at difficult time for race relations in America. In an interview with the Guardian, he said:
The legacy of slavery and segregation dehumanises people. We have not yet escaped the bitterness. And we don’t want to talk about it.
Two recent developments have jarred with the image of a country progressive enough to elect a black man to the White House. A recent Supreme Court decision effectively dismantled one of the key enforcement provisions in the Voting Rights Act, allowing southern states like Texas and North Carolina to implement changes to election rules than experts say discriminate against minority voters.
