Saturday Open Thread | Gone But Not Forgotten Week: Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye was, through his music, the social conscience of a generation.

He took his musical talent and artistry and chose to add social meaning, producing anti-war anthems.

And what man do you know could make women want to lose their panties while listening to The National Anthem?

Taken far too soon.

Ok, I just posted this on The Obama Diary.

On the MHP shit, get ready, because I am delurking to tell the truth and shame the devil. I’m about to put the paws on some folks feelings without filter and some folks may feel some way about it, so I am ready for the hateration. I’m going to piss some people off with my comments and I know it will set some people off, so get ready.

That Steppin Fetchit apology vid from Melissa Harris Perry was just sad. I’m going to keep it real. It was sad. No, it wasn’t a damn sincerity dripping video, it was just someone buckdancing to Mr. Charlie once again. If you are getting the vibe that I am not feeling that video or that Melissa Harris Perry has no sympathy from me, you are right. Karma just checkmated her behind, because I remember she was big and bad berating Barack Obama. I remember this………

    http://reignofapril.blogspot.c

She went after President Obama like he was her ex-husband, emasculating him and hitting him below the belt, measuring up his very thought provoking comments as an attack on her personally. It just goes to show that Michelle Obama is a graceful and benevolent woman, because Mrs. Obama could have did what Jill Scott did in this video and nearly catch ass whuppin fever on Melissa for that.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v

(By the way, Ms. Jilly from Philly also said the very same thing the President said and IS a single mom as well. Her points as per this article…

    http://www.clutchmagonline.com

And when Black Twitter chin checked her for that, she then went bad after us like we slapped her mother. Yeah, when its black folks, you can pull your wig off, kick off your shoes, take your earrings off, do the Ms. Thang neck roll and shake your finger at us and hogcall, but when its white folks, you clam up,shamelessly grovel and tapdance for Mr. Charlie sanging Mammy. How she pointed out she was biracial and came from Mormons as if that would make Mitt Romney and crew show mercy from the thrashing she would probably get from him tomorrow. And his comments with that little Parakeet wife of his will be shameless. It will be like the fake interview with Katie Couric on Real Husbands of Hollywood.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?f

I’m going to say something about the Romney’s adopting that black child. I believe it was done as a cynical political ploy. This family doesn’t do SHIT for ACTUAL charitable good reasons or good faith. These people are ALL about bullshitting niceness and sincerity for TV media appearances. These delusional folks thought they were gonna win in 2012 and thought that since black folks in America would obviously be in a ginormous funk about the first African American President being defeated by a man whose religion considered us demons until 1978, that the way to salve that wound would not be to formulate policies that would benefit people of color, but to have a black grandchild to parade around news cameras to assure white folks that his policies would not really be bad for black folks, because hey BLACK GRANDSON, LOOK HERE! (Because really, thats who that really would be for. Most people of color would see right through that. Except of course, the ones who pine for white peoples seal of approval which now seems to include the aforementioned MHP) I feel bad for the kid, because one day, Kiernan is going to run up on some brothers who will let him know who he is, and that day will be when the Negro wake up call descends on him. Oh, it will happen. With the Romney’s raising him, it is damn impossible NOT to happen.

This whole spectacle of vituperative farce is amazing. Since that election loss in 2012, the media has been popping the Romney’s out like a fuckin Jack In The Box. Just trying and pining to make us realize we made a mistake in 2012 and that these folks should be in there. And really, look at the evidence. The news media saying Barack Obama is unpopular, Barack Obama’s Presidency is over, Barack Obama would lose in a do over election, No one likes Barack Obama, Barack Obama had a bad year, Barack Obama lost the debate and somehow that was bad even though he WON!!!!, Ann Romney is giving Michelle Obama a run for her money in the red dress she wore at her convention, ALL THE BULLSHIT!!!!! And instead of Melissa Harris Perry standing firm and true for the Angela Davis, raise a solid fist principles she supposedly embodies, she caved to pressure from Mr. Charlie and unnecessarily apologized for shit she was absolutely correct on. She doesn’t care about progressive and liberal principles, she cares about her paycheck and livelihood which I guarantee she wouldn’t have if she went back to Tulane.

This is why I am not one of the ones calling for more black voices on news and television. I’m sorry, I’m not for putting more black folks in the anchors chair if all they are is a mouthpiece for white corporate words, Liberal or Conservative. I don’t want it. Don Lemon is a perfect example of this. I would have thought a Black, Gay mid forty year old man would have more self respect than what he is shown. But he is as attention whorish as Miley Cyrus and Snooki. I read his ass when he tried to “George Michael” Jonah Hill in the men’s room.

    http://articles.latimes.com/20

I don’t want him representing me on television and I highly doubt the LGBT community is embracing him with open arms either. If this is what it means to have black voices on television, then damnit silence me.

I’m not here for this, “We need voices like her’s on television.” I don’t want to hear that rancid shit. Television didn’t win Barack Obama the 2008 or 2012 elections, WE DID!!!! It was us. Stop putting stock in these personalities that are not there for us, but for themselves. Melissa Harris Perry is getting her Negro Wake Up Call and we all need to just let it happen for her sake and ours.

    End Rant.

On Friday night, Rachel Maddow delivered a blistering reply to a letter from attorneys representing billionaire conservatives Charles and David Koch. While she has always been willing to make corrections on the show, she said, the Kochs’ current quibble is about a matter of actual verifiable fact and as such needs no correction.

“You know, you never like to get stuff wrong,” she said, “but it does happen from time to time and when we get stuff wrong on this show, I try to make sure that we correct it. We don’t mind making corrections. That said, don’t push it.”

A recent story about the Koch brothers’ financing of a national network of right-wing pressure groups is factually true, in spite of the Kochs’ ire at being mentioned unfavorably in the media.

“We cover the Conservative movement a lot on this show,” she said, “and in so doing we occasionally find people who have been mentioned in our coverage who are absolutely outraged that they have been mentioned in our coverage.”

“And the Conservative political figures who you can most count on to threaten to sue you and call your boss and scream about their victimization as loud as they can whenever they get mentioned by name in a way they do not control are of course, the Koch brothers,” she said.

The Koch attorneys went so far as to send a script for Maddow to read on the air, which she flatly refused to do.

“The Koch brothers’ letter to us includes a script that they want me to read to you on the air denouncing my own reporting on the Florida “Drug Test the Poor” story and telling you that they are not involved in promoting any such issue,” she continued.

“I’m not going to read their script. I’m not going to renounce my own reporting on this story because the reporting on this story stands,” said Maddow.

“We will not stop reporting on the political actions and the consequences of the political actions of rich and powerful men even if they send angry letters every time we do it,” she vowed. “I will not read scripts provided to me by anyone else. I do not play requests. I will happily make corrections when I do get things wrong. We do it on this show all the time. But I will not renounce or retract reporting that is true even if the subjects of that reporting don’t like it.”

With the utmost respect and I’m sorry GB to have disagree at this
time – but I saw nothing “adult” about MHP’s apology. And here’s why I say this. MHP in the past has said some highly offensive remarks about PBO – from condemning his speeches to outright lying on national TV by claiming that he accused single mothers of being responsible for gun violence. When this was brought to her attention did she apologize or even revise her remarks? No – instead she doubled down, reacted in an extremely arrogant manner, blocked people and got a few of her minions to attack the dissenters with full force.

Fast forward to this issue…MHP basically joked about something that looked like (and most likely WAS) a desperate political act on the part of the Romneys. She was NOT attacking the adopted child. She was not attacking trans-racial adoptions. Yet she was made to apologize (which she did on Tweeter with several tweets) for something she didn’t do. Furthermore, Joe Scarborough added insult to the injury by sending out a passive-aggressive “congratulatory” tweet to the Romneys invoking the SAME said adopted child.

In contrast, when David Gregory and Jodi Kantor had a Twitter
exchange directly attacking the Obama’s for supposedly “staging” their family life, there was nary a peep from the left or anyone on MSNBC. The only people raising a stink were the TODers, and some of the Obots on Twitter. The general media was deathly silent about this.

Thus I am of the opinion that MHP was not apologizing out of a
sincere belief that this was the thing to do or out of “consideration
for the other side.” She was not apologizing in order to retain a
position to do greater good for humanity. She apologized to retain her job at MSNBC to pay her bills and afford her the lifestyle she has come to enjoy.

Melissa Harris-Perry Breaks Down On Air While Addressing Kieran Romney Controversy
    by Tommy Christopher | 10:17 am, January 4th, 2014

Harris-Perry began by reiterating her previous apologies, almost verbatim, and added “adults who enter into public life implicitly consent to having less privacy, but their families, especially their children, should not be treated callously or thoughtlessly. My intention was not malicious, but I broke the ground rule that families are off-limits. For that, I am sorry.”

Her voice cracking, an emotional Harris-Perry continued “Allow me to apologize to other families formed through transracial adoption, because I am deeply sorry that we suggested that interracial families are in any way funny, or deserving of ridicule. On this program, we are dedicated to advocating for a wide diversity of families, it is one of our core principles. And I am reminded that when we do so, it must be with the utmost respect. We’re genuinely appreciative of everyone who offered serious criticisms of last Sunday’s program, and I am reminded that our fiercest critics can sometimes be our best teachers.”

“De Blasio Administration’s Treatment of Homeless in Storm Represents Break from Bloomberg Policy”

One aspect of the de Blasio administration’s storm response reflected a sharp break from Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s policy: his treatment of the homeless. NY1’s Bobby Cuza filed the following report.

As has long been the case during severe winter weather, the city on Thursday activated “Code Blue,” meaning all homeless drop-in centers are open 24 hours, offering hot meals and showers, and single adults can access any homeless shelter, bypassing the intake process that normally requires that they first come to a Manhattan intake center.

This time, though, shelter restrictions were also eased for homeless families, something advocates say was a problem under Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“If you had families with vulnerable children, they were sometimes turned away on bitterly cold nights like this, so that’s very troubling,” said Mary Brosnahan of the Coalition for the Homeless. “And it’s great that immediately, Bill de Blasio took action and did something quickly to signal a sea change in homeless policy.”

Also during Code Blue, the city can bring the homeless into shelters even when they’re unwilling.

If you see someone on the street who may be in need of assistance, city officials encourage you to call 311 and ask for the mobile outreach response team. Those teams, which search city streets for homeless individuals who may be at risk, are doubled in number during Code Blue conditions.

“Our Department of Homeless Services is again out in full force,” de Blasio said.

That’s despite the fact that de Blasio’s appointee as homeless services commissioner, Gilbert Taylor, introduced on Tuesday, doesn’t take over until January 13.

In any case, during the overnight hours Thursday, outreach teams responded to 58 individuals, with 13 of them placed in homeless facilities. Altogether, the city fielded 76 calls.

The sheer volume, though, meant that help didn’t always come quickly. After encountering Eric James on East 28th Street, NY1 called 311 and spent about half an hour on hold. NY1 finally made a report, but about 45 minutes later, James decided he could no longer wait.

“It’s too cold. I can’t take it no more,” he said. “It’s either my hands are freezing and hurting, or my feet hurting.”

So he left, in search of a restaurant or any other warm place that would let him in.
