More Grover…
Mister Magic- Critical Review
In a contemporary review, Robert Christgau of The Village Voice gave Mister Magic a “B–” and found it “functional” and satisfactory for a commercially successful jazz album: “Washington plays a warm tenor in the pop jazz tradition of Gene Ammons, but the rhythm section percolates danceably, and the result is sexy background music only superficially marred by Bob James’s strings.”
In a retrospective review for Allmusic, Scott Yanow gave the album four-and-a-half out of five stars and said that it is “one of Grover Washington, Jr.’s best-loved recordings and considered a classic of r&bish jazz.” He found Washington to be in “particularly creative form” and called James’ arrangements “colorful if somewhat commercial”.

Hillary to Armanpour @ CNN town hall today regarding Benghazi attack: “The buck stops with the president.”
REALLY? The POTUS has always said this. I’m still mad at POTUS for choosing your shady ass for SoS.
Come to think of it, it’s the only decision I’ve ever hated that he’s made thus far in his presidency.
They’re not slick.
Part of the Hillary is Inevitable scam…
Is the Hillary is the Savior scam..
Because if 2014 goes poorly, then the day after the elections, that’s all we’re gonna hear.
Hillary is the Savior…
It’s not in her best interests for 2014 to go well.
Because, if it did, then the President and Dems could add even more to the President’s list, and it would show that no, we don’t need Hillary. We just need another Dem to continue on President Obama’s agenda for America.
ON POINT
GO AWAY HILLARY, JUST GO!

Hillary’s peculiar support of the troops
Breathtaking:
Hillary Clinton’s tortured revisionism is, accordingly, quite painful to read, or watch. Earlier in the interview she denies having stayed the course in 2008 for “political reasons,” even though the dominant interpretation of her intransigence at the time was that she was prematurely playing to a general-election, instead of a Democratic primary-voting, audience. I remain in agreement with that interpretation, but let’s say Hillary’s latest explanation is true–that she refused to renounce the war only because she “couldn’t break faith” with the troops.
With that, however, she only compounds her problems. No political leader can genuinely “support the troops” by lashing them to an unwinnable, unconscionable foreign policy and “terrible battle environment” of brutal failure. The contradiction is staggering. But oddly enough Hillary is in part correct. Her explanation doesn’t make sense to anybody else but her, or whoever thought it up for her. This was checkers, not political chess, and yet even here she failed to think so much as one step ahead
: How will the still-antiwar base react to an explanation steeped in a ruthless contradiction of doom–that she would support keeping troops in a hellish and hopeless sinkhole, so as not to “break faith” with them. I’m at a loss. Her embryonic campaign’s amateurism is as painful as its revisionism. –

Wolfowitz on Iraq: a pageantry of idiocy
Moments ago I caught about the first minute of a Chuck Todd interview of Paul Wolfowitz, who was there to offer his “insights” on the Iraq crisis. His first was that the centuries-old Sunni-Shia rupture is an “obscure” matter. This comment perplexed and nearly enraged Todd, but to me it seemed impeccably Wolfowitzian. The man is an idiot of lore, a sort of lord of the idiots, and to become upset over an idiot so impressively practicing his art is merely an exercise in fellow idiocy.
As noted, I didn’t suffer the entire interview, so I can’t say what additional idiocies Wolfowitz had to offer. I’m sure they were they just as impressive. But what perplexed me was why Todd would invite this incurable idiot on to his program for an interview about the one subject in this world on which the idiot is most idiotic. It’s akin to inviting me on to Todd’s show to discuss Pennsylvania Dutch quilting–a discussion entertaining in its cluelessness, perhaps, but scarcely informative.
Nonetheless I’ve seen more of Paul Wolfowitz in the last week since he busied himself “informing” Congress of how cheaply we could blow up the Middle East in a conflagration-cum-cakewalk. Ubiquity, thy name is Wolfowitz, which only goes to confirm the old Army adage: “Fuck up and move up.”

WaPo’s Dana Milbank Bombarded For Column On Benghazi Panel That Turned Ugly
Tom Kludt – June 17, 2014, 3:43 PM EDT
The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank described an ugly scene that took place Monday at a conservative panel on Benghazi, but now many conservatives and a prominent media critic contend the columnist offered a deceitful account.
Milbank attended an event that was hosted by the Benghazi Accountability Coalition and detailed what happened when Saba Ahmed, a law student at American University, asked the panelists about negative Islamic stereotypes.
Milbank wrote that Brigitte Gabriel, the founder and CEO of ACT! for America, “pounced” when it was her turn to answer Adhmed’s question.

NC GOPer: Unlike Blacks Or Hispanics, ‘Traditional’ Population Isn’t Growing (VIDEO)
Daniel Strauss – June 17, 2014, 6:00 AM EDT
State House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-NC), the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in North Carolina, said that the “traditional” voting bloc of his home state wasn’t growing like minority populations in an interview he did in 2012.
In that interview with the Carolina Business Review, Tillis, who is running to defeat incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC), was asked what he thought of Hispanics not supporting Republicans.
“When you see all of these things that have transpired, what do you think about?” Carolina Business Review host Chris William asked Tillis.
In response, Tillis said that the answer had more to do with “demographics of the country.”
“If you take a look, you mentioned the Hispanic population — the African American population, there’s a number of things that our party stands for that they embrace,” Tillis said. He went on to say that Republican need to do a better job reaching out to minority voters. Tillis then said that unlike the Hispanic or black populations, which have been growing, the “traditional population of North Carolina and the United States is more or less stable.”

The Cantor Prediction Is Part of a Pattern: GOP Pollsters Stink
They overestimated Romney, underestimated Cuccinelli, and had Eric Cantor up 34 points. Do GOP pollsters understand the country anymore?
The last few years have regrettably made the phrase “Republican pollster” less a job title than a punch line. From the 2012 election, where many in the GOP were stunned by the Obama campaign’s victory, to the 2013 closer-than-expected Virginia gubernatorial race, all the way to the present, Republican polling as of late has been a much-maligned sector of the campaign-industrial complex, and not without reason.
This past week, prominent Republican pollster John McLaughlin came under fire for his firm’s polling that showed House Majority Leader Eric Cantor up by 34 points over his insurgent opponent, David Brat, in his Congressional primary in Virginia. Cantor and his team, assuming a relatively easy victory was imminent, were blindsided last Tuesday in a double-digit loss.
While there’s definitely a need for accountability in terms of what campaign consultants are providing for their price tags, the piling-on of McLaughlin has been unseemly and dishearteningly personal. He is not the only pollster to get a race wrong, not by a long shot. For instance, in 2012, nonpartisan pollster Gallup whiffed and showed Romney ahead on Election Day nationwide. In 2013, most pollsters in the Virginia’s governor’s race underestimated just how close Virginia’s Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli was in his bid to defeat Democrat Terry McAulliffe.

NC GOP Senate candidate: Blacks, Hispanics overtaking ‘traditional population’
By David Edwards
Tuesday, June 17, 2014 8:32 EDT
Republican U.S. Senate candidate from North Carolina Thom Tillis complained in 2012 that the “traditional” population in his state was not growing, unlike African-American and Hispanic populations.
During a 2012 interview that was uncovered by Talking Points Memo this week, Carolina Business Review host Chris William asked Tillis why Hispanics that voted for President George W. Bush were not supporting then-nominee Mitt Romney.
Tillis argued that the change was less about the GOP message, and more about shifting demographics in the United States.

Rep. Gregory Meeks :The Media Should Stop Consulting John McCain On Iraq
TPM
One Democratic congressman who voted against authorizing the Iraq War in 2002 believes the media should stop turning to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for analysis of the current situation in Iraq.
On Monday’s “All In,” MSNBC host Chris Hayes asked Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) if he’d gotten many requests to do TV spots lately considering that he took a “tough vote” against the Iraq War. Meeks hadn’t.
“Which amazes me why each and every time they go right to John McCain,” Meeks told Hayes. “I don’t know when John McCain has had it right. Thank God the American people were smart enough not to elect him president of the United States.”
“Why does the news media go to John McCain to ask him any time there’s anything happening because you know he’s going to be, ‘go to war, send troops,'” he added. “It just doesn’t make sense.”
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/gregory-meeks-john-mccain-iraq
The corporate news media always goes to John McCain because he is always ready and willling to flap his jaws for them on the subject of the Iraq War. It might take some effort to find someone who is actually knowledgeable on the subject and corporate media chooses not to look for such a person.
The PBS Newshour is doing a fairly good job of reporting on Iraq right now.
Anyone watching 50 Cent’s show Power on Starz? I caught the first episode on Amazon. It’s not bad.
I’m putting tv on the back burner this summer. Watching “Rich Man Poor Man” and “The Wire” on DVD. I have the complete series.

Republican Congressman Tells Right-Wing Radio Host That House Has Votes To Impeach Obama
By: Justin Baragona
Monday, June, 16th, 2014, 7:13 pm
Here we go again. During an interview with local Pennsylvania radio host Gary Sutton, Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA) commented that House Republicans most likely have enough votes to impeach President Obama. In an audio clip posted by Buzzfeed, Barletta pointed out that the President is constantly ignoring the Constitution and constantly breaking the law. He then suggested that impeachment would “probably pass” if it came up for a vote. Of course, neither Barletta or the host specifically brought up which laws Obama’s breaking, or how he is ignoring the Constitution. Instead, it was mostly just a generalized discussion about how the President uses politics against poor, helpless Republicans.
The money quote from Barletta is the following:
“He’s just absolutely ignoring the Constitution, and ignoring the laws, and ignoring the checks and balances. The problem is, you know, what do you do for those that say impeach him for breaking the laws or bypassing the laws. Could that pass in the House? It probably, it probably could.”
This is more of the same old, same old from Republicans, who are merely trying to appeal to their base of angry, old, hardcore racists. Nary a week goes by where we don’t hear a Republican claim that Obama needs to be impeached, or that the House of Representatives has the votes to impeach the President. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has brought up impeachment a couple of times in the last month. Former Congressman Allen West seemingly spouts it daily. Fox News has made a cottage industry out of mentioning impeachment.

Insurance Companies Rush to Enter Obamacare in Year 2
Spandan Chakrabarti | June 16, 2014
For a plan that imposes regulations too burdensome and puts a boot (black, of course) on the necks of our beloved health insurance companies that are really the consumer loving victims of big, bad Obamacare, those same insurance companies are rushing to claim a piece of the Obamacare pie. After the first open enrollment period concluded for the Affordable Care Act exchanges with success and participation beyond anyone’s wildest dreams, apparently the insurance companies that decided to sit out the first year are thinking twice.
In every state that has reported so far, the number of insurance companies signing up for their exchanges is going up. Reports The Daily Briefing:
In every state that’s shared details thusfar, it appears there will be more choices in Obamacare, year 2:
•Michigan’s exchange is going from 13 participating companies in 2013 to 18 this fall.
•At least one additional carrier has filed to sell plans through Kentucky’s exchange.
•Several more insurers may join the plans participating in Virginia, Washington, and Indiana’s exchanges.
•United HealthCare may jump into Georgia’s market.

Auditions held for Rob Ford The Musical
By Shawn Jeffords,Toronto Sun
First posted: Monday, June 16, 2014 04:36 PM EDT
Kevin Jollimore strolls into the audition, a pillow stuffed down the front of his shirt, his blond hair spiked, suit jacket tightly buttoned. For a few minutes, he is Mayor Rob Ford.
Jollimore is the last in a long line of seasoned thespians — and more than a few amateurs — desperately trying to channel Toronto’s crack-smoking chief magistrate.
He sings, he dances and he performs a monologue at Second City’s training room Monday afternoon. He does it all without mentioning taxpayers, subways or the gravy train. Rather than busting out some patented Ford cliches, Jollimore wants to show off his acting chops in a bid to land the lead role in Rob Ford The Musical: The Birth of Ford Nation.
“He’s not all evil,” Jollimore said of Ford after the audition, unbuttoning the suit jacket and pulling the pillow out from under his shirt. “He’s just a guy with some problems.”
Jollimore has been a professional actor for years and even has a role as Richard Nixon in a production set to hit the city’s Fringe Festival this year. Anyone looking to land the Ford role has to infuse it with a little humanity, he said.
“Part of it is going to be the look,” he said. “But part of it is going to be the connection with the audience. Rob Ford connects with people. He loves to talk to people. That’s what people like about him.”

‘Moral Monday’ demonstrators turn up volume; police arrest 20
RALEIGH Days after persuading a Superior Court judge to suspend some new rules for the N.C. Legislative Building, protesters were back on Monday, raising their voices by many decibels against a state budget and Republican-controlled agenda they describe as “extremist.”
As the demonstrators tested the breadth of the order signed Monday by Judge Carl Fox about the overly broad definition of “disturbing behavior,” General Assembly police checked with their attorneys on the depth of their authority to remove the noisemakers from the state building.
About 20 minutes after the N.C. Senate went into session, law enforcement officers began wrapping plastic cuffs around the wrists of 20 demonstrators who had continued singing, chanting and speechmaking after being asked to quietly leave the rotunda area outside the General Assembly chambers.
The scene was reminiscent of last summer, when more than 900 demonstrators were arrested for similar actions.
But in early May, legislators amended N.C. Legislative Building rules after many of the criminal cases from 2013 raised questions about the clarity and constitutionality of the measures. On Friday, the NAACP and five plaintiffs challenging those rules won a legal victory when Fox described measures targeting “disturbing behavior” and “disruptive signs” as overly broad and vague. There will be further debate in court in the coming weeks and months about whether the new building rules are constitutional, but Fox said some of the changes adopted in May would be suspended until those arguments could be heard.
In the late afternoon on Monday, nearly 800 demonstrators gathered on Halifax Mall, according to Capitol Police estimates. The Rev. William J. Barber II echoed many of the same concerns heard in 2013 and in protests earlier this session. The protesters’ goal is to push lawmakers to roll back some of the laws and policies that demonstrators describe as “attacks” on North Carolina’s poorest and most vulnerable residents.
