  2. Unless Israel lifts its blockade of Gaza, no ceasefire can work.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/10988692/Unless-Israel-lifts-its-blockade-of-Gaza-no-ceasefire-can-work.html

How much more of a pummelling can Gaza take? The fatality count mounts to around 750 Palestinians and 35 Israelis. The civilian infrastructure in Gaza is creaking under the Israeli assault. Power, water and medicines are fast disappearing from Gaza, not least after Israeli strikes on its sole power plant.

At last, the diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire have moved out of first gear, with US Secretary of State, John Kerry, and the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, doing the rounds. As was the case during Israel’s previous wars with Gaza, initial understanding of the Israeli position among international leaders gives way to increasing horror and outrage at the scale of the onslaught and the mountains of rubble.

An immediate ceasefire was the desirable outcome. Hamas rejected initial offers and has to answer for doing so. This in no way excuses the Israeli aggression that has been heaped on this overpopulated, under-resourced strip of land.

Israeli officials claim that they offered “quiet for quiet”. A ceasefire for Israelis equals a normal life. But that’s not the case Palestinians, for whom the seven-year blockade is a daily aggression. For ordinary Palestinian citizens, the blockade means being unable to fish beyond three nautical miles off the shore of Gaza. They cannot travel and trade freely, meaning that 70 per cent of the population is aid dependent, a figure that has surely risen over the last three weeks. Palestinians briefly had an airport, only to see it bombed. They were even promised a port under Oslo, but nothing materialised.

The key Palestinian demand is that they escape becoming what David Cameron in 2010 referred to “a giant open prison in Gaza.” As one Palestinian from Gaza said to me: “We are all prisoners, including women and children. Our kids are born in captivity. What would Americans do it they were born in Alcatraz? Would they just sit back and wait to be released?”

Naomi Wolf walked out of synagogue when they had nothing to say about Gaza massacre

Challenged below for why I am mourning genocide in Gaza. I mourn genocide in Gaza because I am the granddaughter of a family half wiped out in a holocaust and I know genocide when I see it. People are asking why I am taking this ‘side’. There are no sides. I mourn all victims. But every law of war and international law is being broken in the targeting of civilians in Gaza. I stand with the people of Gaza exactly because things might have turned out differently if more people had stood with the Jews in Germany. I stand with the people of Gaza because no one stood with us. I went to synagogue last Friday night and had to leave because I kept waiting for the massacre of Gaza to be addressed. … Nothing. Where is god? God is only ever where we stand with our neighbor in trouble and against injustice. I turn in my card of faith as of now because of our overwhelming silence as Jews…I don’t mean Israelis, a separate issue…about the genocide now in Gaza.

I want no other religion than this, that is, seeing rather than denying my neighbor under fire and embracing rather than dismissing those targeted with annihilation and ethnic cleansing.

Jimmy Carter calls for end to fighting in Gaza
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has called for an end to the fighting and bombing in Gaza.

“Both sides must distinguish between combatants and noncombatants, and Israel must ensure that its use of force is proportionate in accordance with international humanitarian law. More immediately, all combat operations must stop, and Israeli troops should withdraw from Gaza,” Carter said in a statement released Tuesday.

So far, more than 600 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the fighting, according to reports. The Israeli death toll is estimated at 29, including two civilians.

Humantarian groups have also called for an end to the fighting, citing the civilian loss of life as well as deteriorating conditions in the area.

Carter also called on the international community to use a ceasefire agreement to ” advance the reunification of Palestine if there is to be sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The agreement must include implementation and international monitoring mechanisms.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appealed to US Secretary of State John Kerry to get the FAA ban rescinded.

“Netanyahu spoke this evening with … Kerry and asked him to act to restore flights by American airline companies to Israel,” sources in Netanyahu’s office told AFP.
Kerry said the order would be reviewed within in a day and told Netanyahu the ban was solely due to safety concerns, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
Following top-level talks in Cairo, Ban went to Israel to deliver his views in person as the 15-day conflict showed no sign of easing.

“My message to Israelis and Palestinians is the same: Stop fighting, start talking and take on the root causes of the conflict so that we are not at the same situation in the next six months or a year,” he said.

  13. Turkey declares three-day mourning for Gaza

    https://www.todayszaman.com/anasayfa_turkey-declares-three-day-mourning-for-gaza_353759.html

Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç told a news briefing after a bi-weekly Cabinet meeting on Monday that the period of mourning, which is aimed at supporting Gaza’s resistance against Israel, started on Tuesday.

Despite growing calls for a halt to two weeks of fighting, violence raged on. Israeli jets, tanks and artillery regularly pounded the densely populated coastal strip, killing 28 members of a single family at the southern end on Monday. Hamas unleashed regular volleys of rockets at Israeli cities, many of which were intercepted.

Arınç, who is also the government spokesman, said Ankara “curses the massacre” and Israel’s ruthless mass punishment of the Palestinian people.

President Abdullah Gül also expressed condolences for the victims in Gaza and called for a cease-fire in a written statement released on Tuesday.

“I call on the concerned parties to begin a serious, extensive negotiation for a permanent and just peace again while trying to ensure a cease-fire,” he said.

Since the start of the offensive, top Turkish officials have adopted a strong stance against Israel, using harsh political language against the country because of its attacks targeting Palestinians.

  14. Tel-Aviv-bound Turkish Airlines plane turns back to İstanbul

    https://www.todayszaman.com/son-dakika_tel-aviv-bound-turkish-airlines-plane-turns-back-to-istanbul_353776.html

In a sign of increased caution about flying near combat zones, Turkish, US and European airlines halted flights to Israel on Tuesday after a rocket landed near Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.

Delta Air Lines and United Airlines suspended service between the US and Israel indefinitely. US Airways scrapped its one flight to Tel Aviv Tuesday. Germany’s Lufthansa and Air France also suspended flights. The actions come days after a Malaysia Airlines jet was shot down over eastern Ukraine with 298 people on board.

One THY plane that was planing to land in Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport had to return back to İstanbul and the airlines halted flight for 24 hours.

The Israel has launched the invasion of Gaza in the third war in just over 5 years.

Israel’s Transportation Ministry called on the airlines to reverse their decision and said it was trying to explain that the airport was “safe for landings and departures.”

“Ben-Gurion Airport is safe and completely guarded and there is no reason whatsoever that American companies would stop their flights and hand terror a prize,” it said in a statement.

  17. South Africa: Zuma to Send Delegation to Israel Over Gaza Invasion

    http://allafrica.com/stories/201407221583.html

President Jacob Zuma is to send a delegation, led by former Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad, to Israel to convey South Africa’s concerns over the mounting loss of civilian lives through Israel’s invasion of the Gaza strip, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said in Cape Town on Tuesday.

Tabling her department’s budget vote in Parliament, Nkoana-Mashabane also announced that South Africa would soon be donating US$1-million to assist with humanitarian efforts in Gaza, and that Zuma would be inviting Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas for a working visit to South Africa.

Her announcement comes amid growing calls for the United Nations Security Council to act within the ambit of international law to prevent the violent attacks on the people of Palestine, which has left many civilians dead.

“The senseless killings of women and children must stop now,” Nkoana-Mashabane said. “We must silence the guns.

    • Evening, ladies. I just stopped by to tell you what an incredible job you are doing of covering the war in Gaza. My heart breaks for the people and especially those innocent children. But I’m also heartened by the acts of solidarity shown by people all around the world. Folks in this country, however are showing their behinds. But I suppose that is to be expected in a culture which demonizes Palestinians as sub-humans without legitimate rights or aspirations. Thanks for the great coverage, and keep on keeping on.
