This week we will be entertained by the music of The Jackson 5.
The Jackson 5 (later known as the The Jacksons) are an American popular music family group from Gary, Indiana. Formed in 1964 under the name The Jackson Brothers, the founding members were Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael. After participating in talent shows and the chitlin’ circuit, they entered the professional music scene in 1967 signing with Steeltown Records, releasing two singles, before signing with Motown in 1969
Among the first group of black American performers to attain a crossover following, preceded only by The Supremes, The Four Tops and The Temptations, they made history in 1970 as the first recording act to have their first four singles to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, with the songs being “I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There”. Scoring 17 top forty singles on the Hot 100, after continuing with further hits such as “Never Can Say Goodbye” and “Dancing Machine”, most of the group with the exception of Jermaine, left Motown for Epic Records in 1975, where with brother Randy taking Jermaine’s place, they released five albums between 1976 and 1981, including the hit albums, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980) and the hit singles, “Enjoy Yourself”, “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” and “Can You Feel It”. In 1983, Jermaine reunited with the band to perform on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever and subsequently released the Victory album the following year. Following the end of their tour to promote the album, Michael Jackson and Marlon Jackson promptly left the group. The remaining four released the poorly received 2300 Jackson Street album in 1989 before being dropped from their label.
Inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999, the Jacksons reunited in 2001 on Michael’s 30th anniversary television special. Following Michael’s death in 2009, the four eldest of the brothers embarked on their Unity Tour in 2012.[1][2]

Early years

The five Jackson brothers’ interest in music took place in Gary, Indiana, bolstered by their father Joe Jackson. In 1964, Joe caught son Tito playing with his guitar after a string broke. Upon fixing the string, threatening punishment, Tito played for his father, who was impressed enough to buy Tito his own guitar. Tito, Jermaine and Jackie showed an interest in singing and formed their own group with their father naming them as The Jackson Brothers, with six-year-old Michael playing congas and childhood buddies Reynaud Jones and Milford Hite playing keyboards and drums. Marlon, then seven, eventually joined playing the tambourine. In August 1965, before a show at Gary’s Tiny Tots Jamboree held on Michael’s seventh birthday, Evelyn LaHaie suggested the group rename themselves to The Jackson Five Singing Group, later shortened to simply The Jackson Five.
In 1966, the group won a talent show at Gary’s Theodore Roosevelt High School, where Jermaine performed several Motown numbers, including The Temptations’ “My Girl” and Michael performed two James Brown numbers, including, “I Got You (I Feel Good)”, winning the talent show instantly. Johnny Jackson and Ronnie Rancifer eventually replaced Milford Hite and Reynaud Jones. After several more talent show wins, Joe Jackson booked his sons to perform at several respected music venues of the chitlin’ circuit, including Chicago’s Regal Theater and Harlem’s Apollo Theater, winning the talent competitions on both shows in 1967. After they won the Apollo contest on August 13, 1967, singer Gladys Knight sent a tape of the boys’ demo to Motown Records, hoping to get them to sign, only to have their tape rejected and sent back to Gary. In November of 1967, the brothers signed a deal with Gordon Keith’s Steeltown Records, where they recorded and released two singles, “(I’m A) Big Boy” and “We Don’t Have to Be Over 21”. During early 1968, the brothers also performed at strip clubs on Joe’s behest to earn extra income.
While performing a week long run of shows at the Regal Theater as the opening act for Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers, an impressed Taylor sent the Jacksons to Detroit to help with their Motown audition, which was set for July 23 at Motown’s headquarters located at Woodward Avenue. Following the taped audition, which was sent to CEO Berry Gordy’s office in Hollywood, Gordy requested the group to be signed, with final negotiations completed by early 1969, leading to the group to be signed on March 11. Following initial recordings at Detroit’s Hitsville USA studio, Berry Gordy sent the Jacksons to Hollywood in July, hiring Suzanne de Passe to become a mentor of the brothers.
Starting in August, they performed as the opening act for The Supremes, whose lead singer Diana Ross was planning to leave for a solo career at the end of the year. After performing at the Daisy in Los Angeles and at the Miss Black America Pageant in New York, the group recorded their first single, “I Want You Back”, written by a newly assembled Motown team called The Corporation, which consisted of three composers and songwriters Freddie Perren, Deke Richards and Alphonzo Mizell with Gordy as a fourth partner. In October, the song was released and the group promoted it while performing at the Hollywood Palace with Ross hosting. In December, the brothers made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Afterwards, their debut album, Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5, was released that same month.
Jacksonmania[edit]
In January 1970, “I Want You Back” topped the Billboard Hot 100. Led by the Corporation, the Jackson 5 released two more number-one singles, “ABC” and “The Love You Save”. A fourth single, “I’ll Be There”, co-written and produced by Willie Hutch, became the band’s fourth number-one single, making them the first recording act to have their first four singles reach the top of the Hot 100. All four singles were almost as popular in other countries as it was in the United States. Releasing a succession of four albums in one year, the Jackson 5 had replaced The Supremes as Motown’s best-selling group. They will continue their success with singles such as “Mama’s Pearl”, “Never Can Say Goodbye” and “Sugar Daddy”, giving them a total of seven top ten singles within a two-year period.
Now Motown’s main marketing focus, the label capitalized on the group’s youth appeal licensing dozens of products, including the J5 heart logo located on Johnny Jackson’s drum set, the group’s album covers, stickers, posters and coloring books, as well as a Saturday morning cartoon series produced by Rankin/Bass. Noting their lack of covers on otherwise predominantly white teen-oriented magazines including Tiger Beat and Seventeen, a black publication, Right On!, began in 1971 and initially focused heavily on the Jackson 5, with at least all five members adorning a single cover between January 1972 and April 1974. In addition, the Jackson 5 appeared in several television specials including Diana Ross’ 1971 special, Diana!. Later that September, they starred on their first of two Motown-oriented television specials, Goin’ Back to Indiana, with their second, The Jackson 5 Show, debuting in November the following year. During the Vietnam War period, the group often was joined by Bob Hope on USO-benefited performances to support military troops.
To continue increasing sales, Motown launched Michael Jackson’s solo career, with the single, “Got to Be There”, released in November 1971. Following several top 40 follow-ups, Jackson’s 1972 song, “Ben”, became his first to top the charts. Jermaine Jackson was the second to release a solo project, his most successful hit of the period being a cover of the doo-wop song, “Daddy’s Home”.
Decline and exit
By 1972, despite Michael and Jermaine’s solo successes, the Jackson 5’s own records began plummeting on the charts. Partially credited to the changing musical landscape, The Corporation, which had produced most of their hit singles, split up in 1973. Focusing their attention on the emerging disco scene, the brothers recorded the charted song, “Get It Together”, followed immediately afterwards by their hit, “Dancing Machine”, their first to crack the top ten since “Sugar Daddy” nearly three years before. Despite those successes, most of the Jackson 5’s follow-ups were not as successful and by 1973, Joe Jackson had grown tired of Motown’s uneasiness to continue producing hits for the brothers. Jackson began producing a nightclub act around his sons and daughters, first starting in Las Vegas and spreading throughout the states.
By 1975, most of the Jacksons opted out of recording any more music for Motown desiring creative control and royalties. Learning that they were earning only 2.8% of royalties from Motown, Joe Jackson began negotiating to have his boys sign a lucrative contract with another company, settling for Epic Records, which had offered a royalty rate of 20% per record, signing with the company in June of 1975. Absent from the deal was Jermaine Jackson, who decided to stay in Motown. Randy Jackson formally replaced him. After initially suing them for breach of contract, Motown allowed the group to record for Epic, as long as they change their name, since The Jackson 5 moniker was in ownership of Motown. The brothers settled as simply The Jacksons.
The Jacksons CBS/Epic Records[edit]
In November of 1976, following the debut of the family’s weekly variety series, the Jacksons released their self-titled Epic debut under the Philadelphia International subsidiary, produced by Gamble & Huff. Featuring “Enjoy Yourself” and “Show You the Way to Go”, the album went gold but failed to generate the sales the brothers had enjoyed while at Motown. A follow-up, Goin’ Places, fizzled. Renewing their contract with Epic, the Jacksons were allowed full creative control on their next recording, Destiny, released in December 1978. Featuring their best-selling Epic single to date, “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)”, written by Michael and Randy, the album sold over a million copies. Its follow-up, 1980’s Triumph, also sold a million copies, spawning hits such as “Lovely One” and “Can You Feel It”. In 1981, they released their fifth album, a live album that eventually sold half a million copies. The live album was culled from recordings of performances on their Triumph Tour. In the middle of Destiny and Triumph, Michael Jackson released the best-selling solo effort, Off the Wall. Its success led to rumors of Jackson’s alleged split from his brothers. After Triumph, Jackson worked on his second Epic solo release, which was released in November 1982 as Thriller, which later went on to become the best-selling album of all time.
In March of 1983, with Jermaine, the Jacksons performed on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, the same show where Michael debuted the moonwalk during a solo performance of “Billie Jean”. Following the success of the reunion, all six brothers agreed to record a sixth album for Epic, later released as Victory in 1984. Their biggest-selling album to date, it included their final top ten single, “State of Shock”, which was actually a duet between Michael and Mick Jagger and didn’t feature any other Jackson in participation, as did most of the songs on the album, with some exceptions, including the top 20 single, “Torture”, which was performed as a duet between Michael and Jermaine, with Jackie singing several parts. In July of 1984, the Jacksons launched their Victory Tour, but the tour was overshadowed by Jackie’s leg injury, ticket issues, friction between the brothers, and shakeup in the promotion and marketing team, initially headed by Don King, who was later fired. Michael announced he was leaving the group after their final performance at Dodger Stadium that December. The following January, Marlon Jackson also announced he was leaving the group to pursue a solo career. In 1989, five years after their last album, the remaining quartet of Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Randy released the ill-fated 2300 Jackson Street, which performed badly on the charts. After a brief promotional tour, the band went into hiatus.

It’s a pattern of territorial expansion that has now become familiar. After the Islamic State captured Sinjar on Sunday, came the executions. Then arrived the orders to convert or die, the flash of the movement’s black flag, the fleeing of thousands — and, finally, the jubilant and chilling images on social media.
One showed a destroyed Shiite shrine, which had long sat in the ancient city of Sinjar in northwestern Iraq. Another depicted the executions of several blindfolded men. There was an image of two masked men who had climbed a tall building, enshrouded its edifice in a black Islamic State flag, and blasted a pistol into the air. Then there was a picture showing a masked jihadist hoisting a gun at the desk of the town’s mayor — a portrait of a famed Kurdish guerrilla leader looming behind.
The armed movement, which has surged in wealth, manpower and resources in recent weeks, also just took the town of Wana on Sunday, according to The Washingon Post‘s Loveday Morris. The Islamic State routed a once-proud Kurdish army and forced an exodus of Kurds the United Nations said numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Calling the situation a “humanitarian tragedy,” a top U.N. envoy to Iraq said in a statement that their expulsion was “dire.”

The Other Middle East Crisis – Saudi Arabia Prepares For Invasion

With the rapid takeover of large portions of Iraq and Syria by the Isis Caliphate, the neighboring nations have woken up to the threat poised by the religiously driven Arabic state. According to The London Times, Saudi Arabia has begun calling upon its military allies to begin sending troops to the nation in order to defend what they view as an inevitable invasion.
The irony of course is that the Saudi government originally backed the rebel group back when it was viewed as a counter-axis against Iranian influence in the region. Instead, Isis has apparently turned its attention to Saudi Arabia, or more specifically, the holy city of Mecca. A tweet from an alleged Isis leader gave their next target as the holy city.
With the growing concern over the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, the coverage of Isis has been lackluster within the US at best. It was all but ignored when Saudi Arabia and Jordan both began massing tens of thousands of troops along the border. The reason for the recruitment of Pakistani troops however may be more worrisome, as back in March, the Isis Caliphate claimed widespread support within the Saudi military, even including pictured claiming to be Saudi officers holding letters of support. Could the Saudi regime be turning to the Pakistan military out of fear that their own soldiers are planning to join the Caliphate?
The Saudi rose to power after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, absorbing large chunks of land under the watchful eye of their allies, the British. Their kingdom, previously called Wahaabis, conquered neighboring lands until they controlled much of the Arabian peninsula. They have since then backed many terrorist organizations in the region, in an effort to destabilize their neighbors. The Palestinian group Hamas in particular is financially backed by Saudi Arabia, despite the Saudi government really not caring about the Palestinian people. King Abdullah even condemned Hamas this past week without any criticism of Israel. It benefits them in keeping its neighbors weak. But now, their backing of such groups has given rise to an entity they cannot hope to so easily dismiss.
This is not the first time a group has positioned themselves to seize Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, from the House of Saud. It was in 1979 that the efforts of Juhayman al-Otaybi actually did seize the Grand Mosque for a period of two weeks. But that was a small insurgent effort, backed by a group of sympathetic soldiers within the Saudi military. This time they are facing what is potentially a far more severe threat. And they have responded accordingly.

Former White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was famously shot during the attempt on then-President Ronald Reagan’s life in 1981, has died. He was 73.
“Jim touched the lives of so many and has been a wonderful husband, father, friend and role model,” his family said in a statement. “We are enormously proud of Jim’s remarkable accomplishments – before he was shot on the fateful day in 1981 while serving at the side of President Ronald Reagan and in the days, months and years that followed. Jim Brady’s zest for life was apparent to all who knew him, and despite his injuries and the pain he endured every day, he used his humor, wit and charm to bring smiles to others and make the world a better place.”
Brady was confined to a wheelchair after being shot and went on to become a leading voice for gun control.

‘The Wire’ Actor Anwan Glover Stabbed
Anwan Glover, an actor best known for his role on HBO’s “The Wire,” was stabbed early Sunday morning at a Washington DC. nightclub. According to a police report, Glover, 41, said he was punched by one assailant and another hit him on the head, causing him to slip on the wet floor. He then heard someone shout “He has a knife,” and felt a sharp pain on his right side. On “The Wire” Glover played Slim Charles, a gangster dealing with street violence in the nearby city of Baltimore. In real life, Glover participated in a number of anti-violence campaigns. He said he was shot 13 times growing up in Washington D.C., and his brother was shot to death in the district in 2007. Glover’s son was also shot at a party in the capital in 2011. Glover was taken to George Washington University Hospital. His condition has not yet been disclosed –

Ross Douthat Misplays the Blame Game

I don’t know what the president is planning to propose on immigration policy and neither does Ross Douthat. Mr. Douthat assumes that the president is going to propose a change in enforcement policy that is substantial enough that it will be equivalent to the “granting of temporary legal status, by executive fiat, to up to half the country’s population of illegal immigrants.”
I don’t know where Mr. Douthat is getting that number, but it should be uncontroversial that the Executive Branch can set priorities. It is completely reasonable, for example, to instruct our agencies to focus first on deporting people who have some kind of criminal record and only later focus on kids who were brought here through no fault of their own.
If the administration tells Congress that it needs a few billion dollars in order to enforce our immigration laws in a humane way, and Congress leaves town without appropriating any of the money that the administration requested, it should be even less controversial that the Executive Branch will need to make even more tough decisions about how to enforce the law. Less money is available to deal with undocumented workers in the interior of the country if that money must be diverted to deal with unaccompanied minors from Central American who have shown up at our Mexican border in the tens of thousands.
Mr. Douthat thinks that the administration is cynically raising the specter of impeachment to raise money and motivate the Democratic base, but he’s going right along with the right-wing narrative that the president is intending to act in an unprecedented and lawless way by granting amnesty to half of the illegal immigrants residing in this country.
But the Republicans have forced the president’s hand. In the Senate, they filibustered all efforts to give the administration the money they requested, and in the House they passed a bill that allocated only a small fraction of the money that was requested and made sure to make the bill as unpalatable to Democrats as possible. Go ask the House Republicans and they will freely admit that the bill they passed was never intended to become the law. It was passed simply so they could try to plausibly argue that they did something.
Without the money it needs, the administration must set priorities. The Republicans won’t like those priorities but it’s their own damn fault that those priorities have to be set.

Juan Williams Suggests Calls To Impeach Obama Have Racist Undertones (VIDEO)

Fox News pundit Juan Williams on Sunday suggested that conservatives calling for President Obama’s impeachment are racist given that they mostly come from white people.
During a “Fox News Sunday” panel, Heritage Foundation CEO Michael Needham said that while conservatives were concerned that Obama is “lawless,” Democrats are pushing the impeachment rhetoric.
Williams then tore into Needham, explaining that conservative pundits and some elected officials have been pushing for impeachment.
“You listen to Michael, and you understand why there are lots of Republicans who think, ‘This man’s a demon, this guy’s awful, we got to get this guy out of here any way we can, he’s breaking the law,’” he said.
“And then you come on and say, ‘Oh, no. We’re not talking about impeachment, that’s the Democrats.’ All the Democrats are doing is taking advantage of the fact that you guys have demonized President Obama to this extent,” Williams continued.
He then said that some criticize Obama because of his race.
“Lot’s of people see it, especially in the minority community, as an attack on the first black president, think it’s unfair, so it’s going spur their turnout in midterms which is going to be critical in several races,” Williams said.
Fox host Chris Wallace then jumped in to ask if Williams really meant to accuse conservatives of racism.
“Well, all I can do is look at the numbers,” Williams responded. “If you look at the core constituency of people, let’s say, who are in tea party opposition support of impeachment, there’s no diversity. It’s a white, older group of people.”

Liz Cheney bashed President Obama Friday night for the way he characterized CIA interrogation practices after Sept. 11, 2001 as “torture.”
“Even before I came into office, I was very clear that in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, we did some things that were wrong. We did a whole lot of things that were right, but we tortured some folks,” Obama said during a Friday press conference. We did some things that were contrary to our values.”
Cheney said this was unacceptable.
“This president is an utter disgrace. He’s got a situation where, as your last two reports showed, you’ve got crises erupting around the world. And he is expending more time, more energy, more passion, more aggressive activity in targeting and going after patriots, heroes, CIA officers and others who kept is safe after 9/11,” Cheney said on Fox News’ Hannity.

Tell Me More About the Return of the White-Guy Era in Broadcast Media

Tell Me More, Michel Martin’s groundbreaking radio show, takes its final bow this week as NPR chooses, it seems, to reverse media diversity.
Though we often ridicule those who find themselves on the wrong side of a racial controversy and fall back on the “but I have a black friend” defense, this time I figured it actually might not be a bad idea for me to start this piece with a similar disclaimer:
Some of my best friends are white guys.
And from the late Walter Cronkite and Peter Jennings to the wonderful Bill Moyers, to name just a few, some of my favorite journalists are white guys, too.
But they aren’t the only terrific journalists out there. There are plenty of talented journalists of color, yet their presence is increasingly rare in newsrooms. And as a result, the diversity of stories being told in media today—and, ultimately, society as a whole—will suffer.

Seriously, listening to NPR in the last year and a half has been almost unbearable. It’s parroting the same RW talking points as the cable networks. I miss Michele Norris too.
Black Woman Alleges That Popular NY Club Is Racist

A former student-athlete claims she was shut out of 1 OAK, the luxury New York City hot spot, because of her race.
former Stanford student-athlete has alleged that 1 OAK, a New York City nightclub that has played host to a slew of celebrities, refused her entry July 26 because she’s black,Radar Online reports.
The woman, who spoke to Radar Online anonymously, said she visited the club because she knew the promoter. When she and her two girlfriends, one white and one black, reached the bouncer to show their IDs, he told the white friend to enter, but then barred access to her and the black friend, saying, “Sorry, ladies, not gonna happen tonight,” according to Radar Online.
“We continue to stand there for a couple minutes, slightly confused,” she told Radar Online.
To add insult to injury, the bouncer then provided entry to the rest of the members of their group—all of whom are white.
The two black girls started to notice a pattern: The bouncer didn’t seem to discriminate against white patrons, “some with purple and orange hair, some with flats on and some severely underdressed for a club,” Radar Online’s source said.
The club has been accused of discriminatory practices before.

Octavia Spencer: ‘There are more interesting roles for me, Viola Davis, and Kerry Washington on TV’

There’s a new movement happening in television right now, with A-list African-American moviestars heading to TV.
Emmy nominee Kerry Washington arguably cracked a glass ceiling in Hollywood when her political thrillerScandal hit airways in 2012.
Other notable black actresses had noteworthy TV success in recent years, including Taraji P. Henson on CBS’s Person of Interest, Regina King on the TNT drama Southland and Angela Bassett on FX’s American Horror Story.
Halle Berry’s new CBS drama Extant is this summer’s top new series premiere, and next month, Oscar-nominee Viola Davis will teach all How to Get Awaywith Murder, when her new series, developed by Shonda Rhimes debuts on ABC.
Don’t leave Academy Award winning actress Octavia Spencer out of the mix. She’s heading to TV, starring as a nurse on Fox’s new series, Red Band Society, which premieres September 17.
In an interview with theGrio, while promoting her new film Get On Up, Spencer opened up about her move to TV.
“I start work next week on Red Band Society for Fox,” Spencer said. “There are more interesting roles for me and Volia [Davis] and Kerry [Washington] in television.”

Gradually these networks are learning that folks aren’t going to tune in to shows that have characters who don’t look like them.

Pastor shot in the head over senseless road rage incident

A young pastor out of Florida was shot in the head in a senseless tragedy that has left the community stunned. Steven Simon is a 22-year old preacher out of West Palm Beach. He was shot in the head last week during a road rage incident in Interstate 95.
The young pastor was with his girlfriend at the time, a 23-year old woman who called police right after the shooting.
“We’re driving, and [inaudible] he cut us off,” she said. ”Then, we kept driving, and he drove by us, then he cut us off again, and then he shot at us.”
The young lady was able to give the police a description of the car. Police are now looking for a 1999/2000 beige or Champagne-colored car with a white male driver in his 50s or 60s. The man has white hair and they believe that he was driving a Saturn.
“Unfortunately, road rage is becoming a part of our culture. People get upset where there was a slow down. It’s just absolutely ludicrous to let a situation like this escalate,” said Martin County Sheriff William Snyder.
Simon was flown to the hospital and is fighting to live after this horrible incident. He is a pastor at the Straight Way to Heaven church in West Palm Beach.

Republicans’ increasing reliance on white voters may not spell electoral doom just yet

It’s a widely accepted idea that Republicans are sitting on a demographic time bomb: The GOP is getting whiter and whiter in terms of the voters it attracts even as the country is growing increasingly diverse.
Marisa Abrajano, an associate professor of political science at the University of California at San Diego, doesn’t dispute that basic notion in a new study of the electorate. But she does suggest that the time bomb may well have a very long fuse — and that in the time before it explodes, Republicans could actually benefit electorally from a consolidation of the white vote.

With the election of a Black president, the public thought and the media asserted that our country was post racial, post racism. The media stressed this, ignoring the racist signs carried at rallies protesting the election by angry racists.
Tim Wise says that after the election of Barack Obama pundits (Whites) thought everything was fine when it comes to racism in America and that it is time to move on to other things. Tim Wise says that “in reality the claim that we have gotten past racism and entered a post racial society really is NOTHING NEW.”
Even in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement, he says, when activists were attempting to tear down Jim Crow and gain voting rights, to have Brown v. Board of Education implemented in local schools, etc., many many Whites believed everything was fine and that there was equality and that there were no problems.
Tim Wise says that “in 1963 when pollsters from Gallup went door to door and asked white Americans if they thought whites and racial minorities were treated equally in matters of housing, education, and employment, 66% of whites said ‘yes.’ Also in a 1962 Gallup Poll, 83% of whites answered ‘yes’ to the question ‘Do you think negro children have as good a chance as white children to get a good education?’ ”
Tim Wise points out that today:
The fact is that racial inequality still exists and racial bias still affects the way that we view others.
“Even with a black president…
the median wealth of white families is 20 times greater than the median wealth of black families and 18 times greater than the wealth of Latino families.”

70% of students of color attend schools where the majority of students are black and brown.
And these schools are 10 times more likely than majority white schools to have high levels of student poverty.”

College-educated African Americans are nearly twice as likely as college-educated whites to be unemployed. College-educated Latinos are 50% more likely than college-educated whites to be unemployed.”

But a judge in Tallahassee has blown the whistle, and thrown Florida politics into turmoil. Judge Terry Lewis found that two of the state’s 27 congressional districts were unconstitutional and wants a new congressional redistricting plan drawn in time for November’s election.
Though the Supreme Court seemed to throw its hands up a decade ago, the ruling left states free to act on their own. And Florida voters in 2010 wrote a prohibition on partisan gerrymandering into the state constitution, which is what Lewis ruled the state’s Republican leaders violated with their plan.
Lewis, whose previous judicial foray into politics involved overseeing the state’s 2000 presidential vote recount at the heart of Bush v. Gore, did not mince words.
A “group of Republican political consultants or operatives did in fact conspire to manipulate and influence the redistricting process,” Lewis wrote in his July 10 ruling.
“They made a mockery of the Legislature’s proclaimed transparent and open process of redistricting by doing all of this in the shadow of that process, utilizing the access it gave them to the decision makers, but going to great lengths to conceal from the public their plan and their participation in it.”

57 jazz musicians photographed on a street in Harlem, New York City.
Art Kane, a freelance photographer working for Esquire magazine, took the picture
around 10 a.m. in the summer of 1958. The musicians had gathered on 126th Street,
between Fifth and Madison Avenues in Harlem.
Jean Bach, a radio producer of New York, recounted the story behind it in her 1994 documentary film, A Great Day in Harlem. The film was nominated in 1995 for an Academy Award for Documentary Feature.
