Helen Folasade Adu, OBE (Yoruba: Fọláṣadé Adú; born 16 January 1959), better known as Sade (/ʃɑːˈdeɪ/ shah-DAY), is a British singer-songwriter, composer, and record producer. She first achieved success in the 1980s as the frontwoman and lead vocalist of the Brit and Grammy Award-winning group Sade. She has been nominated six times for the Brit Award for Best British Female. In 2002, she received an OBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace for services to music, and she dedicated her award to “all black women in England.” In 2012, Sade was listed at number 30 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Women In Music. Sade has a contralto vocal range.
Early life
Sade was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Her middle name, Folasade, means “honour confers your crown”.[6] Her parents, Adebisi Adu, a Nigerian lecturer in economics of Yoruba background, and Anne Hayes, an English district nurse, met in London, married in 1955 and moved to Nigeria. Later, when the marriage ran into difficulties, Anne Hayes returned to England, taking four-year-old Leaving Sade and her older brother Banji to live with her parents. Later on Sade and her brother lived with their grandparents just outside Colchester, Essex. When Sade was 11, she moved to Holland-on-Sea, Essex to live with her mother, and after completing school at 18 she moved to London and studied at Saint Martin’s School of Art.
Career
While in college, she joined a soul band, Pride, in which she sang backing vocals. Her solo performances of the song “Smooth Operator” attracted the attention of record companies and in 1983, she signed a solo deal with Epic Records taking three members of the band, Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale and Paul Denman, with her. Sade and her band produced the first of a string of hit albums. Sade’s debut album, Diamond Life, was released in 1984, reaching No. 2 in the UK Album Chart, selling over 1.2 million copies in the UK, and won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1985. The album was also a hit internationally, reaching No. 1 in several countries and the top ten in the US where it has sold in excess of 4 million copies. In late 1985, Sade released their second album, Promise, which peaked at No. 1 in both the UK and the US. It was certified double platinum in the UK, and quadruple platinum in the US. In 1986 the band won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. In 2010, The Sunday Times named her the most successful solo British female artist in history.
In 2002, she appeared on the Red Hot Organization’s Red Hot and Riot, a compilation CD in tribute to the music of fellow Nigerian musician, Fela Kuti. She recorded a remix of her hit single, “By Your Side”, for the album and was billed as a co-producer.

There are times in sport when certain events seem inevitable. One such case was Serena Williams tying the legendary Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert with 18 Grand Slam titles.
It seemed unavoidable that Serena would reach this milestone at some point in 2014, given how sensational she was in 2013: the 32-year-old finished last season on an 18-match winning streak, which included Slam number 17 at last year’s US Open. In those 18 matches, Serena surrendered only three sets of tennis. For the entire 2013 season, Serena lost only 4 matches and collected an astounding number of titles: 11.
Serena was so unstoppable that reaching the magic number of 18 seemed like a mere formality; a nice accomplishment on the way to the larger goal of catching Steffi Graf and her 22 Major titles.

If people at TOD fully understand what has happened in New York State it will help them understand what we see unfolding nationwide now.
Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic governor, collaborated with the Repubs in the State Senate—-who are in the minority!!————- to join with 5 turncoat Dems so that Cuomo could work with the Real Estate and Banking interests rather than the Dems. The gavel went to the Republicans.
The power stayed with the 1%. Fact. He contributed to the Democrats losing the Senate. Fact, not rumor.
Again, the People voted for a Democratic Senate Majority and the Governor connived with 5 traitors to take it away. Twice!! Even when we vote and win the power is taken from us.

Look at Bill Clintons record. It is notable that Terry MacCaullife’s Governors race was a loser until the Obama Team arrived.
Bill Clinton supports Dems who lose. Over and over. Bill has an agenda that differs from ours.
It is the RW Dems who have joined with their campaign donors and against whom our chances are slim. For example:
Cuomo counts the Koch Brothers and Ken Langone from Home Depot as big contributors.
Their combined power and $$$$ will next try to either remove de Blasio from office or render him powerless.
In view of all this I will not be commenting again on this years elections. Not tonight in NY and not on the national level.
I will be reading everything, voting and hoping for the best for all Dems everywhere and especially the Family residing at 1600 Pennsylvania. Ave.

Thom Tillis, in his Wednesday night debate with U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, joined a growing number of election-year Republicans in support of over-the-counter birth control pills without a prescription. That’s quite a turnaround for the N.C. House Speaker, who is challenging incumbent Hagan for her North Carolina U.S. Senate seat.
In the past, Tillis has been less than friendly towards N.C. women’s reproductive rights. He led efforts in the N.C. legislature to block funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides contraceptives as well as other health services. And he pushed through an unwise bill mandating that doctors show ultrasound images and describe the fetus in detail to women seeking abortions; a federal judge struck down the provision this year. He’s also said company health plans shouldn’t be required to cover birth control methods and that states should have the right to ban contraceptives. He also supports so-called “personhood amendments” that grant legal protections to fertilized human eggs, which the American College of Obstetrician and Gynecologists says could ban some forms of birth control.
Other Republican candidates now publicly favoring over-the-counter birth control pills without a prescription have expressed similar views. So, this change of heart has the pungent odor of politicking.

Why Are Republicans Suddenly Leaning Left?

Several Republican candidates in the year’s most competitive Senate races have begun their fall sprint to Election Day, not by embracing Tea Party-fueled conservatism but by defensively tacking leftward.
Let’s start in Colorado, site of a strategic GOP retreat in the “War on Women.” The Republican backtracking there is being done by Rep. Cory Gardner, following withering attacks by Democrats on his past support for “personhood amendments” that bestow rights to fertilized human eggs and effectively ban some forms of birth control. Gardner released an ad claiming he would make access to “the pill … cheaper and easier” than would his opponent, Sen. Mark Udall, by ending the need for prescriptions. This tactic quickly spread. In his first debate with Sen. Kay Hagan, North Carolina Republican nominee Thom Tillis embraced the same plan.
In Arkansas, meanwhile, Republican Rep. Tom Cotton is wilting under Democratic pressure on the minimum wage. Cotton is challenging Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor. Like nearly all GOP politicians, but not like most voters, Cotton is opposed to raising the federal minimum from its current level of $7.25. But on Election Day, Arkansans will vote on a ballot initiative to raise the state minimum to $8.50, squeezing Cotton to the breaking point. Put on the spot in a radio interview Friday, he said he would vote for the state measure, though he avoided answering a follow-up question about whether that means he would support raising the federal minimum to the same level.
Alaska Republican Dan Sullivan this week aired a new ad that practically makes him seem like a Democrat: embracing teachers and excoriating Wall Street. A seventh-grade Anchorage teacher tells the story of how Sullivan, as state attorney general, helped shore up the public fund that managed her pension and “forc[ed] a Wall Street firm to pay for their malpractice, returning almost half a billion dollars into the retirement fund for Alaskans.” No complaints about government shakedowns. No teacher-bashing. And also of note: no mention of the word “Republican.”

ALBANY — Republican lawmakers have gone from tracking polls to tracking pols.
In what many say is an alarming first, a private eye hired by Assembly Republicans placed a GPS device on a Long Island assemblyman’s car for two months in an unsuccessful effort to prove the pol didn’t live in his district.
According to court transcripts, investigator Adam Rosenblatt said he was hired in March by attorney James Walsh, repping the Assembly Republican Campaign Committee, to find out where Assemblyman Edward Hennessey (D-Suffolk) actually lives. Walsh that same month was paid $3,000 by the GOP campaign committee.

Britain’s Prince William and wife Kate are expecting second baby

LONDON, Sept 8 (Reuters) – Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate are expecting their second baby, Buckingham Palace said on Monday.
The couple’s first child, Prince George, was born in July last year amid a huge international media frenzy. William is second in line to the British throne, with George third.
“The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news that their royal highnesses are expecting their second child,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
There was no detail of when the baby was due.
“Many congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. I’m delighted by the happy news that they’re expecting another baby,” British Prime Minister David Cameron said on his Twitter feed.
