“Let’s face it, Hollywood like Donald Trump, likes its “blacks” beholden, cloying, entertaining, clownish, suck-uppy, ass-kissy, not too smart or ever intellectually, physically or in any way threatening – or superior. They’ll sometimes make a token gesture: An “exotic” looking, non-American, Yale-trained, well-pedigreed, non-threatening innocent like Lupita, or a fun, non-threatening, will never be threatening black like Mo’nique or Cuba Gooding – who pretty much fall off the radar once they get the kiss of death that is the random surprise Oscar. And then there’s the pretty one. Acceptable to every race for their mixed good looks. The Halle Berrys who’re also Hollywood-blessed to have a lustful godfather in Warren Beatty who’ll invest his time and energy campaigning to see to it that his good ole boys at the Academy see what he sees in ya. And then there’s Denzel. Good looking and talented, and fortunate to have the lustful support and stamp of approval of white A list actresses like Julia Roberts whose voice for some impossible to understand reason, carries more weight than his in Hollywood.”

In response to the all-white Academy Award nominations, actor Gbenga Akinnagbe told CNN’s Brian Stelter that Hollywood, much like Washington D.C., was a closed, self-perpetuating system that resisted change, and that African Americans were best to work outside of it by funding their own projects.
In fact, he added, working outside the system may have been what got Selma and its director Ava DuVernay snubbed by the Academy.
“Ava’s not a safe black woman,” Akinnagbe said. “She’d be more likely to be nominated if she was more demure, if she kept her opinions to herself, if she didn’t make projects having to do with political or racial issues.”
“I’ve seen what’s going on in the streets as far as these protests — this is our reality,” Akinnagbe said. “I mean American reality, not just black people.”

The truth is, I stopped paying much attention to the Oscars about ten years ago. I remember two Clint Eastwood films that won the Best Picture (plus other awards), “Mystic River” and “Million Dollar Baby.” Just my humble opinion, but these are two of the worst films that have ever won an Oscar. Totally downbeat, disgusting, violent, horrible stories that should never have made it to film let alone win all those Oscars. I just haven’t given the Oscars a great deal of credibility in recent years and look elsewhere for recommendations for good films.
We’ll see what happens. I believe that the best stories yet to be told will be gleaned from the Black experience in America. It’s almost like opening up a whole new film genre because now these stories can be told truthfully. People are ready and there are a lot of folks out there who want to know. Hollywood is first and foremost about making money, and it’s doubtful they will miss any opportunity that they know about.
