Journey is an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1973, composed of former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987, after which it temporarily disbanded. During that period, the band released a series of hit songs, including 1981’s “Don’t Stop Believin'”, which in 2009 became the top-selling track in iTunes history amongst songs not released in the 21st century.[2][3][4] Its parent studio album, Escape, the band’s eighth and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, “Open Arms”. Its 1983 follow-up, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band’s appeal in the United Kingdom, where it reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart. Journey enjoyed a successful reunion in the mid-1990s and later regrouped with a series of lead singers.

Sales have resulted in two gold albums, eight multi-platinum albums, and one diamond album (including seven consecutive multi-platinum albums between 1978 and 1987). They have had eighteen Top 40 singles in the US (the second most without a Billboard Hot 100 number one single behind Electric Light Orchestra with 20), six of which reached the Top 10 of the US chart and two of which reached No. 1 on other Billboard charts, and a No. 6 hit on the UK Singles Chart in “Don’t Stop Believin'”. Originally a progressive rock band, Journey was described by AllMusic as having cemented a reputation as “one of America’s most beloved (and sometimes hated) commercial rock/pop bands” by 1978, when they redefined their sound by embracing pop arrangements on their fourth album, Infinity.[5] According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Journey has sold 47 million albums in the U.S., making them the 28th best-selling band. Their worldwide sales have reached close to 90 million records, making them one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time.[6][7] A 2005 USA Today opinion poll named Journey the fifth best American rock band in history.[8][9] Their songs have become arena rock staples and are still played on rock radio stations across the world.

        I’m thrilled for her. I’d read some article where the outgoing Social Secretary Jeremy Bernard endlessly raved about her. A real workhorse he said. He’d hired her as his deputy and was so impressed with her. I had no idea that FLOTUS would even consider her for the position now that Mr Bernard was leaving. I’m so glad she did, even though we all know that many people will have a problem with it. Bravo FLOTUS for not giving any f’s and for giving this young, dedicated, hardworking woman this fantastic opportunity.

        It’s now up to Ms Dyer to excel and deliver .. Live up to POTUS’ and FLOTUS’ trust in her abilities. Prove her mettle and prove wrong all those who’ll predictably think she’s unworthy because she doesn’t quite fit the ‘traditional’stereotype for the position.

    We’re the experts of our experiences and the best storytellers of the lives we live. When we see our stories not being reflected, we should tell them.

    I was born and bred in Nigeria but I’ve been here since I was young. Being a first generation Nigerian-American is interesting because no matter how American you might feel outside, when you step into your home, you better get it together and know who you are. There are certain experiences that most of us can relate to, like the fact that Naija parents have no chill or care about your feelings. And at one point or another, we were expected to either be doctors, engineers or lawyers. In this stereotype is an ounce of truth.

    A 73-year-old reserve deputy in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been charged with manslaughter after he mistook his gun for a Taser and shot a suspect dead during a botched sting operation.

    In itself, that headline is both troubling and tragic. But when it became public that Robert Bates, the reserve officer, had gained that post after donating thousands of dollars in equipment to the police department, as well as to the sheriff’s reelection campaign in 2012, questions arise about the integrity of reserve programs, not only in Tulsa, but around the country.

    There’s a new Bloomberg poll out that shows the strange behavior of Republican politicians towards Benjamin Netanyahu and everything having to do with Israel is in fact a pretty good reflection of the GOP rank-and-file’s proclivities.

    Yes, the poll shows the depth of the GOP base’s antipathy towards Barack Obama, with Republicans saying they are more sympathetic to Netanyahu than to Obama by a 67/16 margin.

    But here’s the most startling question and answer: given the choice of agreeing that “Israel is an ally but we should pursue America’s interests when we disagree with them,” or that “Israel is an important ally, the only democracy in the region, and we should support it even if our interests diverge,” Republicans choose the latter proposition by a 67/30 margin. That’s with no mention of Obama or any particular dispute, mind you.

    Now I guess the word “support” in this context is a bit ambiguous. But it sure appears Republicans are saying they are more solicitous of Israel’s interests than America’s.

    I find that hard to square with self-defined patriotism, frankly. You can have all sorts of disagreements over what constitutes your country’s interests, of course. But flatly asserting they should be subordinated to another country’s interests is hard to accept from people who have a bad habit of thinking of themselves as the only real Americans.

    Big Money From Super PACs Is Eroding the Power of Parties

    APRIL 16, 2015

    Six months ago, I would have told you that April 15, the date when campaigns report their first-quarter fund-raising tallies, could be one of the most interesting early milestones of the Republican primary season.

    I think I even told my boss, admittedly with hyperbole, that the Q1 report of a year preceding a presidential election was the most important fund-raising report in American politics.

    In 2007, it was when we learned that Barack Obama could match the supposedly inevitable Hillary Rodham Clinton in fund-raising, and that John McCain wasn’t a real front-runner for the Republican nomination (although he managed to claw back to win it), despite his second-place G.O.P. showing in 2000.

    But this year, April 15 has come and gone without much news at all.

    Rather than exploratory committees and campaigns, top Republican candidates like Jeb Bush and Scott Walker have started super PACs and other groups allowing them to solicit unlimited contributions. None will have to file disclosure forms with the Federal Election Commission until July.

    The uneventful passing of April 15 is only the most subtle indication of the way super PACs are transforming the presidential nominating process. They have given candidates the ability to raise colossal sums from small but wealthy bases of support. Along with Internet fund-raising, super PACs are helping to form an alternative campaign finance model that is eroding party control over the primary process. Which types of candidates will benefit remains to be seen.

    The primary season is just underway, but the early super PAC tallies appear to be an order of magnitude beyond what we saw the last time, when Mitt Romney’s super PAC “Restore Our Future” raised $12 million in the first half of 2011.

    Some speculate that Jeb Bush could raise $100 million in the first quarter and $500 million by June. Anything near those sums would smash Mr. Romney’s performance.

    Ted Cruz more than doubled Mr. Romney’s tally in three weeks. A network of super PACs aligned with Mr. Cruz said it raised $31 million in the weeks after he announced his candidacy, which is more than Mr. Obama did in the entire first quarter of 2007.

    There is no precedent for the fund-raising success of Mr. Cruz, a candidate with virtually no support from party elites. My colleague Nicholas Confessore wrote that “the size of the contributions is likely to force backers of other candidates to rethink their budgets for the primary season,” and one can only wonder what the effect might be in another four years. Will the incumbent president raise $4 billion? How much is the presidency really worth? At this point, perhaps we shouldn’t rule out anything.

    Republicans Use Abortion Fight To Jam Loretta Lynch Confirmation

    Republican leaders have tied a vote on Lynch to the passage of an unrelated bill targeting sex trafficking. That bill, which normally would be bipartisan, has stalled for weeks because Republicans tucked an anti-abortion provision into it that Democrats won’t support. As long as the bill doesn’t move, neither does Lynch.

    “The Senate should pass this bipartisan bill right away,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) said Tuesday. “And as soon as that happens, we’ll turn to the Loretta Lynch nomination.”

    But it’s not that simple, and there’s no end in sight to the abortion fight. The Senate is voting Thursday to take up an amendment that Republicans say is a way forward on the impasse, but Democrats call it a gimmick and vow to oppose it.

    Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the bill’s author, will offer to tweak the bill’s language relating to the Hyde Amendment, the federal provision that bans the use of public funds for abortions except in cases of rape or incest. But the tweak doesn’t address Democrats’ core concern that the bill, for the first time, would expand the Hyde Amendment to apply to non-taxpayer funds. The bill would allow fees collected from human traffickers to be funneled into a new public fund for victims, to which the Hyde Amendment would be applied.

    Democrats say any expansion of the Hyde Amendment is a non-starter for them.

    “Senate Republicans are trying to restrict the health choices of women and girls who have been sold into sex slavery,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.). “The latest proposal from Senator Cornyn does nothing to change that fact. He is still attaching Hyde to non-taxpayer, offender dollars.”

    Rick Famuyiwa Will Direct Kerry Washington in HBO’s Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas Project

    And finally, announced early last month, Kerry Washington is now attached to star in a scripted movie on the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas Supreme Court hearings, titled “Confirmation,” which is set up at HBO!

    Washington is of course going to play Anita Hill, as well as executive produce the telepic, which will be penned by Academy Award nominated writer Susannah Grant (“Erin Brockovich”), and will be produced by Groundswell Productions in association with ABC Signature Studios.

    As for who will direct, Rick Famuyiwa, fresh off his hit Sundance movie “Dope,” who was previously in contention for the job, has now officially signed on, and will indeed direct the film for HBO.

    No word yet on what actor will play Clarence Thomas.

    Shooting will begin this summer

    FBI investigates $20 million no-bid contract and CPS CEO’s role in it

    The FBI is investigating a $20.5 million, no-bid contract awarded by Chicago Public Schools to a Wilmette company and what role CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett played in it, according to a source familiar with the matter.

    Byrd-Bennett previously worked for the company, SUPES Academy, which trains school principals, before Mayor Rahm Emanuel appointed her as CEO of the financially beleaguered district.

    The FBI and the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago have been investigating the contract for more than a year, the source said. A grand jury has taken up the probe, the Sun-Times has learned.

    Meanwhile, two City Hall sources told the Sun-Times that Byrd-Bennett’s $250,000-a-year contract, set to expire in June, has not yet been renewed nor will it be unless the investigation is cleared up. Hired in the wake of the 2012 teachers’ strike, Byrd-Bennett remained on the job Wednesday, a district spokesman said.

    The awarding of the $20 million contract has repeatedly drawn sharp criticism given the perilous finances of the school system, and principals have griped about the quality of the training they received.

    Byrd-Bennett did not return messages for comment Wednesday.

    Last Call For The Mask Slips Again

    The mask slips, and Republicans accidentally tell the truth about how they feel about people who look like me. Today’s contestant: GOP Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, up for re-election in 2016.

    In a little-noticed interview last week, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) described African-American neighborhoods as areas that people in his state try to avoid.

    The comment, with its racial undertones, came during a sit-down interview with the Peoria Journal Star and followed a question about how to encourage business development in Kirk’s home state.

    “I want to make sure we have elected people constantly looking at helping the African-American community,” Kirk said. “With this state and all of its resources, we could sponsor a whole new class of potential innovators like George Washington Carver and eventually have a class of African-American billionaires. That would really adjust income differentials and make the diversity and outcome of the state much better so that the black community is not the one we drive faster through.”

    Wait, what? So Sen. Kirk, you normally find yourself driving faster through black communities? Exactly why is that, especially since you represent a state with nearly 1.9 million African-American constituents? Is it out of fear? Disgust? Anger?

    “We” would like to know.

    The notion that people hit the gas when driving through black neighborhoods is a common racial stereotype about urbanization and criminal behavior among African-Americans. The fact that an elected senator from a state with a sizable black population would make such a comment was deemed unfortunate by at least one African-American leader in Illinois.

    “I think what he was trying to say is, he was trying to relate that to crime. But boy, it was a poor choice of phraseology,” said George Mitchell, president of the NAACP’s Illinois State Conference.

    No, Sen. Kirk was being honest about how he views the 15% of the state that is black. He’s afraid of them.

    Perhaps he’s afraid he’ll be voted out of office in 2016. I can’t imagine his Tea Party antics are going over well back in Peoria, especially now that he has to go up against Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth.

    Millions of dollars in World War II silver recovered from deep ocean

    CNN)It took more than seven decades, but England finally got its delivery of tons of silver coins.

    For most of those years, the money was deep at the bottom of the Atlantic, the monetary casualty of a cruel World War II sinking.

    In November 1942, the unguarded SS City of Cairo was sunk by a German U-boat while carrying 296 civilians and cargo that included 100 tons of silver.

    The vessel sunk to more than 16,800 feet under the surface (5,150 meters) where it went undiscovered until 2011 when Deep Ocean Search decided to go looking for it.

    The sinking was the stuff of legend. The City of Cairo was bringing silver rupees from India to England as part of the war effort. After a stop in Brazil, two torpedos sank the ship in the Atlantic.

    After the ship went under, the U-boat reportedly surfaced and the captain said to the survivors in lifeboats: “Goodnight, sorry for sinking you.” The captain’s lament is the title of a book about the event.

    Only a handful of people died as the ship sank but about 100 more passed away during the desperate attempt of the six boats to make it to land, which was hundreds of miles away.

    When the last of the lifeboats was found 51 days later, all but two people in it had died.

    In January 2014, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) was so eager to demonstrate his opposition to the Affordable Care Act that he filed a deeply strange lawsuit against “Obamacare”: he wanted to make coverage more expensive for people who work on Capitol Hill. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, a Republican from Johnson’s home state of Wisconsin, said at the time that the senator’s lawsuit was “frivolous” and an “unfortunate political stunt.”

    In July 2014, a federal district judge threw Johnson’s case out of court. This morning, as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, an appeals court also blew off the Republican senator’s misguided case.
    A federal appeals panel sided with a lower court Tuesday to throw out a lawsuit over Obamacare brought by U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and one of his aides.

    Johnson’s suit attempted to force members of Congress and their staffs to stop getting subsidies for their health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, which is widely known as Obamacare.
    The 7th Circuit’s decision, which was unanimous, is online here (pdf).

    As we discussed last summer, the problem here has always been one of “standing”: how would the Republican senator demonstrate that he’s been harmed by the health care policy he doesn’t like? When filing a lawsuit challenging the legality of a law, it’s not enough for plaintiffs to say, “I don’t like it.” Johnson had to demonstrate that he’d been adversely affected by ACA benefits.

    The far-right senator’s lawyers rolled out a creative line – coverage for congressional staff led to Johnson’s “damaged political reputation,” according to the suit – which has now failed miserably.

    And which, ironically, has damaged Johnson’s political reputation.

    In a statement, the GOP lawmaker who’s never demonstrated much of an interest in lawmaking, complained that his case has struggled due to a “legal technicality.”

    He appears to be referring to the basic procedural details of the American justice system.

    “First Gen”is a sit-com in development, which, judging from the trailer below, could have the potential to be a real hit. The creation of three first generation women Nigerian-Americans, the show aims to give a satirical view of the complicated joys of being someone of their background.

    Starring and written by Yvonne Orji, the show takes inspiration from her real life experiences; After getting her college degree in sociology and a Masters in Public Health with the intention of heading for medical school, Ms. Orji decided to do what she really wanted to do, and moved to New York to pursue a career as an actress and a stand up comic.

    The show, which will be exec produced by Chika Chukudebelu, who is a creative executive at BET, and produced by Kay Oyegun, a graduate of the Peter Stark Producing MFA Program at USC (and who currently works in comedy development at ABC studios), aims not only to satirize the dynamics of a black immigrant family in the U.S., but also to shatter told stereotypes and images.

    Take the last seven U.S. Attorney General nominees and add together how long they had to collectively wait for a confirmation vote. Then double that total. Loretta Lynch has waited longer than that.

    President Obama’s nominee to replace Eric Holder has now been waiting 159 days – nearly 23 weeks – and everyone involved in the process agrees that Lynch has the votes necessary to prevail.

    But the Senate Republican leadership, which is allowing other confirmation votes, still won’t allow members to vote on Lynch. As Politico reported, some civil-rights advocates are taking their frustrations to the next level.
    Loretta Lynch’s allies are launching a hunger strike until she’s confirmed as attorney general, but they could be waiting weeks if Republicans follow through on their threat to delay Lynch even longer. […]

    The advocacy group founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton, along with female civil-rights leaders, are planning the hunger strike, in which groups of fasters will alternate days abstaining from food until Lynch is confirmed to replace Eric Holder at the Justice Department.
    Sharpton, of course, is the host of msnbc’s “Politics Nation.”

    GOP leaders continue to insist that Lynch, who’s being subjected to treatment without precedent in Senate history, will not receive a vote until Democrats meet the Republicans’ demands: advancing an unrelated bill with anti-abortion language in it. The Democratic minority said again yesterday that holding Lynch’s nomination hostage like this is ridiculous – a position that has the benefit of being true.

    Making matters slightly worse, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) said yesterday the chamber will soon move on to a measure related to Iran policy, which means delaying work on the human-trafficking bill, which in turn means delaying Lynch even further.

    Sources: Supervisors told to falsify reserve deputy’s training records

    Supervisors at the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office were ordered to falsify a reserve deputy’s training records, giving him credit for field training he never took and firearms certifications he should not have received, sources told the Tulsa World.

    At least three of reserve deputy Robert Bates’ supervisors were
    transferred after refusing to sign off on his state-required training,
    multiple sources speaking on condition of anonymity told the World.

    Bates,73, is accused of second-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Eric Harris during an undercover operation on April 2.

    The sources’ claims are corroborated by records, including a statement by Bates after the shooting, that he was certified as an advanced reserve deputy in 2007.

    An attorney for Harris’ family also raised questions about the authenticity of Bates’ training records.

    Additionally, Sheriff Stanley Glanz told a Tulsa radio station this week that Bates had been certified to use three weapons, including a revolver he fired at Harris. However, Glanz said the Sheriff’s Office has not been able to find the paperwork on those certifications.

    The sheriff’s deputy that certified Bates has moved on to work for the Secret Service, Glanz said during the radio interview.
