Meet The 12yr-old College Student Who got 1770 on SATs and Speaks Mandarin Chinese

Imagine taking a college course as an adult and attending the class
with you is your 11 year old son. That was Claretta Huey-You was doing last year with her son Carson. At just 11 years old he was the youngest person to be admitted to Texas Christian University. He loved things that kids his age do such as video games but he also loved learning. The child prodigy excelled at whatever was put in front of him.
At 2 years old Carson was reading chapter books. Normally this is not something that a child does until they are at least in kindergarten. Carson entered high school when he was just five years old. He was playing piano pieces written by Mozart and Beethoven by the age of 10.
His feet barely reached the piano pedals. This exceptional young man was doing things that no one expected. When he was 11 years old he scored a 1770 on his SATs. His mother knew that she had a very bright young man on her hands and that he was going to go far in life.
The Dean of Admissions at Texas Christian University, Ray Brown,
stated that all of Carson’s applications for financial aid and college
had initially been turned down in the automated systems because of his age. He was brought in to the university after they manually handled the applications and is now taking a full load of classes that include calculus, religion, physics, and history. He also speaks Mandarin Chinese fluently. Now at 12 years old he is entering his sophomore year of college when most aren’t even in high school yet.

How to Home-school During the Summer While Still Enjoying the Season

It is summertime and children who attend public schools are racing happily out the front doors. They are excited for a few months of fun, sun, and best of all, no school. But what about home-school children? Do they take a summer break like those on a public school schedule do? Many don’t but they are still able to enjoy the summer without feeling like they are still in school. Summer is a time to relax so if you want to continue your child’s education throughout the summer there are quite a few benefits in doing so:
1. Field Trips – Summer is a great time for field trips that can be educational as well. Set up a scavenger hunt at the beach or play beach bingo. List out specific animals and have your children find them and take a photo of them. They will be able to enjoy the weather but also learn about the different animals that live in the tide pools and along the shores. You can also visit zoos and nature parks to learn about animals from other habitats that you cannot see in the wild.
2. Reading & Math – When it is just too hot to play outside and you need something to do indoors you can get their reading and math skills honed. Take advantage of the time that is spent in the house so that when it is nice enough to go outside the kids can play as much as they want to.

An Ohio man harassed a group of children, at least some of whom were black, while pursuing them on foot through his neighborhood, hurling racial epithets in their direction, threatening them with a gun, and urging police to come arrest the children, WKBN reports.
On Monday Gust Mamounis observed two children outside his home begin to fight, while five other children looked on. In a video obtained by police, Mamounis exited his house and cocked his gun.
The children, feeling threatened, dispersed. But Mamounis, a 38-year-old man, followed them, shouting racial slurs. Police can confirm Mamounis did this because he was on the phone with 911 at the time, and the four-minute recording is part of the evidence police used to charged the Struthers man with aggravated menacing, disorderly conduct, and inducing panic.
WKBN obtained a recording of Mamounis’ 911 call, which it says it will not publish because the tape is “filled with so many expletives and racial slurs.”
The news outlet reports Mamounis used the word “n****r” nine times and the word “fuck” 29 times during his phone conservation with the Struthers police.
The tape catches Mamounis yelling at the group — whose only apparent offense is walking in the neighborhood — threatening to harm them, and calling them “n****r.”
Mamounis tells the dispatcher one of the children he’s stalking is a “white trash n****r lover,” and that police needed to “clean up” the area and “send the n*****s back to Youngstown where they belong.” Mamounis says he pays too much in taxes “to live in the ghetto.”
When police arrive at the scene, Mamounis instructs the officers to arrest all of the children. The cops arrested Mamounis instead

Kansas GOP Lawmakers Want To Punish Black Rep For Calling Them ‘Racist’
An African-American lawmaker in Kansas could be expelled from the statehouse for accusing supporters of legislation that eliminated tuition breaks for undocumented immigrants of being racist. State Rep. Valdenia Winn (D) of Kansas City will face a special investigative committee in a hearing June 26 that will weigh possible sanctions against the lawmaker for the remarks.
“What’s most disturbing is the purposeful chilling effect that this type of conduct has on legislators. It’s not right,” Winn’s lawyer, Pedro Irigonegaray, told TPM.
During a March committee meeting considering the legislation, which would have repealed in-state tuition rates for undocumented immigrants, Winn called the proposal “a racist, sexist, fear-mongering bill,” according to the Lawrence Journal-World

The problems of a peripatetic politician

Up until quite recently, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) spent very little time outside the United States. He took a trade trip to China and Japan two years ago, but the Republican governor has otherwise spent the vast majority of his time in his home state.
But as Walker’s presidential campaign moves forward, all of a sudden, he’s racking up quite a few frequent-flier miles. That wouldn’t be especially noteworthy, were it not for two important issues.
First, Wisconsin policymakers are currently busy trying to deal with the governor’s right-wing budget plan, and it’s not going especially well. Walker might be able to help the process along, except he keeps leaving the country.
Which leads us to the second problem: as the Washington Post reported, Walker is having taxpayers pick up the tab for his travels.
Now a potential GOP contender with a lack of foreign policy expertise, Walker in recent months booked three taxpayer-funded trips in quick succession: four days in Britain in early February, a week in Germany, France and Spain in April, and now [this week’s] journey to Canada.
The visit to Britain cost taxpayers $138,200, according to Walker’s office. He has yet to release costs for the other trips.
Even if nothing were going on in Madison, it’s problematic for a governor to ask taxpayers to help boost his resume in advance of a presidential campaign. But the fact that Walker keeps taking trips to foreign soil in the middle of an intense budget standoff isn’t exactly improving his reputation in Wisconsin. From an AP report this week:
Absentee governors are part of the political landscape when a presidential campaign begins and some want to run. There’s no getting around the need to raise money, make national appearances and organize early in important states. What may distinguish Walker, though, is the grief he’s getting from his own party.

GOP votes to make ‘Obamacare’ more expensive

Ask House Republicans about their priorities, and they’ll talk about lowering the deficit. Ask them why they hate the Affordable Care Act, and they’ll say it costs too much.
All of which led to yesterday, when House Republicans voted to make the deficit larger and raise the price tag on “Obamacare.”
It was just a couple of weeks ago that Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) complained that the ACA’s price tag is “skyrocketing.” That, of course, is the exact opposite of the truth – the cost of the law has fallen five times in five years. But the complaint itself is ironic given how eager congressional Republicans are to make the law cost more on purpose. USA Today reported on a little-noticed House vote yesterday:
The House on Thursday easily backed repeal of a tax on the medical device industry. But President Obama has threatened to veto the bill, which would add more than $24 billion to the deficit over the next 10 years.
With not all House members voting Thursday, that chamber’s 280-140 vote fell one vote shy of a veto-proof majority to repeal the tax, which helps pay for the expansion of health insurance under the 2010 Affordable Care Act.
How would Republicans pay for the tax cut? They wouldn’t – the GOP plan is to just add the costs to the deficit they sometimes pretend to care about.
The bill now heads to the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has identified this as one of his top priorities for the year.
Republicans not only want to make the ACA more expensive and increase the deficit; they consider this important.
What’s more, the may very well get their wish – Roll Call reported that there’s enough Democratic support for repealing the medical device tax that, in the event of a White House veto, Congress may be able to override President Obama and scrap the tax policy.
All of this might happen without any real explanation from Republicans as to (a) why they don’t even try to pay for their priorities; (b) why they want Obamacare to be more expensive; and (c) why they so routinely forget to pretend to care about the deficit.

A tax plan that makes calculators cry

The first sign of trouble in Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) new tax plan was clear before it was even unveiled. The Republican presidential candidate assembled “an all-star team of the kookiest pseudo-economists in the history of the Republican Party” to help him craft a plan, which effectively guaranteed the proposal’s ridiculousness.
But as Kevin Drum explained at Mother Jones, it’s probably worse than you think,
According to Paul, the rich will end up paying 14.5 percent in taxes, with no loopholes to pay less. Given that the rich currently pay about 22 percent of their income in federal taxes, they should be pretty happy about that. They should also be pretty happy that he’s getting rid of the estate tax entirely.
And the middle class? Well, they no longer have to pay payroll taxes. Just 14.5 percent of their income.
The goal, obviously, is to establish a “flat tax.” Under the current federal system, there are seven marginal brackets, which rise progressively based on income. Under Rand Paul’s vision, there will be one rate. Period. Full stop.
The ideological case against a flat tax has been obvious for years: it’s inherently regressive. The United States has long accepted the principle that the wealthy shouldn’t just pay more than the poor, but also proportionately more because they’re better able to shoulder the burden.
But ideology aside, the real problem with plans like Paul’s is that the numbers don’t come close to adding up. The Kentucky Republican claims to want to balance the budget in a hurry, but he also supports a tax plan that would blow a multi-trillion-dollar hole in the budget.
“It will be the largest tax cut in American history,” Paul boasted this week, “and a tax cut that will leave more money in the paychecks of every worker in America.”
Both claims are probably true – no president has ever considered recklessness on this scale before, and every taxpayer would probably get a sizable tax break. But that doesn’t change the fact that the plan is hopelessly bonkers for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that it defies arithmetic. We can’t afford trillions of dollars in tax cuts.
There is, however, a larger context to keep in mind, because Paul isn’t the only one pushing this kind of nonsense.
