The Ku Klux Klan is encouraging interested citizens to attend a five-day training camp later this month, where students will study leadership skills intended to help them become better advocates of white supremacy in their own communities.
Listed under “national events” on the KKK website is the Soldiers of the Cross Training Institute (SCTI), to take place on July 20-25 outside of Harrison, Arkansas.
“The primary focus of this school,” according to its website, “is to train future leaders who can return to their communities with the tools to become actively involved in this struggle for our racial redemption”
The institute’s founder and chief instructor is Thomas Robb, who has acted as the Klan’s “national director” since the 1980’s, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. As part of a PR effort to make the KKK more mainstream, Robb did not take the traditional leadership title of “imperial wizard,” and rebranded the white nationalist group as the “Knights Party.”
“Never before in the history of our people have we faced a challenge so threatening,” begins the narrative on SCTI’s homepage. According to the white supremacist organization, there is a “world-wide rebellion against our people.” White people, says the KKK-endorsed summer camp, “are facing genocide.”
“There are few who have the courage,” the SCTI site reads, “to stand before the abyss and point the way to our racial redemption.”
The leadership development school nestled in the Ozark mountains includes some militaristic language in its programming descriptions:
“Even though the hour is late and the night is deep upon us, we are sounding forth this final call to men and women – devout and brave – to rally to the flag and join this New Crusade for race, faith and homeland…. Though the beginnings are small and humble, like the first recruits in a mighty army, the potential is vast and powerful… We must mobilize ourselves into a force for freedom.”

Why don’t black Chicago neighborhoods gentrify?
One expert points to longstanding poverty, lack of capital and retailers with an ‘aversion to black consumers.’
December 17, 2014
By: Natalie Moore
On 64th and Ingleside in the Woodlawn neighborhood, Romarez Moody’s converting a two-flat greystone into a single-family dwelling. The touches are fancy: heated floors, fake chandeliers for closet lights.
And lots of space.
“You can ride a bike and it gives you the Huxtable feel of a home,” Moody said while showing off the second floor hallway.
Moody’s selling these homes for $500,000. That’s pretty steep considering Woodlawn’s median home sales price was just $46,000 last year. The investor is taking advantage of the recession aftermath.
“There were several short sales, which brought new buyers into those properties at an affordable price. That drove down the market and made it more affordable for developers to come in and do what we’re doing here,” Moody said.
Before the housing crash, Woodlawn was on an upswing with condo conversions. Back then the median home sales price was $200,000.
Other nearby black communities were also revitalizing — neighborhoods like Bronzeville, Woodlawn, Washington Park and Oakland. Some worried that gentrification was underway.
“Instead of it being white people in Bronzeville it’s black people of middle class and upper middle class basically taking advantage of good housing prices,” said Janet Smith, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago who studies neighborhood change.
“It raises this question, is there black gentrification?”
According to Smith’s research the answer is “no.” Several black Chicago neighborhoods experienced change over the last decade or so. Improvements were made in these South Side enclaves. Then the economy crashed. One reason these areas improved — but didn’t gentrify — is that they started out so far behind.

WHERE DOES CHICAGO’S BLACK MIDDLE CLASS LIVE?
Posted on July 2, 2014 by Daniel Kay Hertz
………………………………
4. Still, the majority of Chicagoans who are middle-class and black live in neighborhoods that are mostly not middle-class – as opposed to Chicagoans who are middle-class and white, for whom the opposite is true. In this way, Chicago is pretty similar to the rest of the country.
The takeaway, for me, is that these maps contradict two of the biggest lies – or, if we’re being kind, misconceptions – about the social geography of Chicago. The first is that the black neighborhoods of the South and West Sides are an undifferentiated landscape of economic hardship. This is false in a couple of ways. For one, though there are, in fact, many people who are suffering for want of a decent wage in these areas, there are also many thousands of households that are not. (Though they are likely still disadvantaged by other consequences of segregation, including worse access to jobs and basic amenities, higher crime, lower-performing schools, etc.)
For two, just like white, Hispanic, and Asian people, black people are segregated by income. That is to say: some black neighborhoods are much wealthier than others. Of course, this kind of stratification is complicated, since it’s layered on top of – and interacts with – racial segregation. But the view of Chicago as bifurcated between the privileged North Side and deprived South Side needs to get sophisticated enough to recognize the major differences in privilege/deprivation between, say, Englewood and Calumet Heights. It also needs to recognize that even in neighborhoods that are majority low-income, there are generally a significant number of middle-class residents.
The second big lie, related to the first, is that basically everyone on the South and West Sides would get out if they could. This is sometimes stated explicitly; more often, I think, it’s the unspoken assumption that frames most outsiders’ conversations about those parts of the city. It assumes that everyone in Chicago follows roughly the same ladder of neighborhood prestige: one that tops out in Wicker Park, or Lincoln Park, or North Center, or Norwood Park, depending on your family status and subcultural preferences.
But this isn’t remotely the case. Someone who had only lived on the North Side – or outside the city – might figure that the reason there are so few black people (or Latinos! more on that in a sec) in, say, Lakeview, is that Lakeview is so expensive, black and Latino people have lower average incomes, etc., etc. And surely that is, in fact, a large part of the answer. But it’s not the entire answer, and one way to prove it is to show that, actually, the median black householder in Lakeview actually makes less money than the median black householder in Roseland, a neighborhood whose name is usually accompanied in media reports with adjectives like “struggling,” or “blighted,” and so on. It’s actually not even close: over $40,000 in Roseland, versus $33,000 in Lakeview. Those sorts of inversions of North Side/non-Chicagoan perceptions about neighborhood prestige are actually pretty common: black median household income is $24,000 in West Town, $31,000 in Lincoln Park, and $35,000 in North Center, but $39,000 in West Pullman, $42,000 in Washington Heights, and $56,000 in Calumet Heights. And in Ashburn – a neighborhood on the very southwestern edge of the city that’s about 50% black, and which most North Siders (including me, until friends moved there a few years ago) have never even heard of – it’s over $70,000.

The Inevitable (but Predictable) Backlash Over #BlackLivesMatter
If you are successful at gaining awareness for your cause, you also will be successful at getting people to root for your downfall.

When Black Lives Matter activist Bree Newsome climbed the pole on the South Carolina Statehouse grounds and took down the Confederate flag, I had one of two thoughts.
Thought No. 1: That was amazing.
Thought No. 2: I hope people wait at least a few hours before they start their backlash.
A few hours. That’s all I wanted. Just a little moment to enjoy this bit of black girl greatness, climbing the Mount Everest of American issues—racism—and climbing back down relatively unscathed. Sure, she was arrested, as Newsome herself expected to be. But there were critics, clutching pearls, crying, “But oh my God, she broke the law,” almost instantly.

CNN Anchor Praises Obama, and Then a Dead Mic
Don Lemon’s mic was cut after a brief debate with his colleague Jake Tapper over whether Wednesday’s powerful eulogy of Clementa C. Pinckney was the first time President Obama spoke openly about race in America.
BY: RICHARD PRINCE
Posted: June 28 2015 5:42 PM
In full preacher mode, President Obama delivered riveting television Friday when he eulogized the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, a state senator, rising political star and one of the nine people killed last week at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.
“President Barack Obama used his eulogy for a slain pastor to deliver an unvarnished lecture on America’s racial history Friday, and then boldly sang ‘Amazing Grace,’ a spiritual meant to summon hope in the darkest of times,” Meg Kinnard, Jeffrey Collins and Jonathan Drew wrote for the Associated Press.
The event touched them as black men, CNN’s Don Lemon and Van Jones said in analyzing the president’s remarks immediately afterward. They were joined by Democratic strategist Donna Brazile, another African American, and finally by CNN anchor Jake Tapper, who is white and who rebuffed a point Lemon made, giving viewers even more riveting television.
The Associated Press story also reported, ” ‘We do not know whether the killer of Rev. Pinckney and eight others knew all of this history,’ the president said. ‘But he surely sensed the meaning of his violent act. It was an act that drew on a long history of bombs and arsons and shots fired at churches; not random, but as a means of control, a way to terrorize and oppress.’
” ‘An act that he imagined would incite fear, and incrimination, violence and suspicion. An act he presumed would deepen divisions that trace back to our nation’s original sin,’ Obama continued, his voice rising in the cadence of the preachers who preceded him.
” ‘Oh, but God works in mysterious ways!’ Obama said, and the crowd rose to give him a standing ovation. ‘God has different ideas!’ . . .
“The president wrapped up the four-hour funeral in song, belting out the first words of ‘Amazing Grace’ all by himself. Ministers behind him quickly stood up and began singing, too, and the choir and organist and many in the audience of thousands joined in. . . .
“Throughout the four-hour ceremony, the ‘Mother Emanuel’ choir, hundreds strong, led roughly 6,000 people through rousing gospel standards between speakers. A banner alongside Pinckney’s closed coffin declared that the killer picked the ‘WRONG CHURCH! WRONG PEOPLE! WRONG DAY!’ . . .”
On Twitter, NPR’s Michele Norris, curator of its Race Card Project, tweeted, “Perhaps we should finally put to rest the notion that this President does not feel comfortable talking about race.”
ABC’s John Karl told viewers that it was “the most powerful speech I’ve heard him speak as president of the United States. This was also a call to action.”
CNN’s Jones left the Obama administration in its early months after attacks by conservatives. He and Lemon told CNN viewers that they had never heard a president speak that way. “He knows this is his legacy . . . I’ve never heard an organist come into a presidential speech,” Lemon remarked.
Lemon turned to Jones and asked, “How did you feel watching it as a black man?”
“I was proud, and I was terrified,” Jones responded. “I was afraid he might have some people terrified. Is somebody going to say, ‘He’s going to play the race card at a funeral’?”
Lemon replied, “I was saying, ‘go on, brother, if you don’t say it, nobody is going to say it, ‘ adding that he felt the same way as Jones.
Jones said Obama started his presidency as a bridge builder, then became a pinata and is now trying to be fearless. “Do we believe this level of candor?” Jones asked. “This is the most Christian speech I’ve heard.” He said its religiosity was bound to give pause to the “secular left.”

Black America Knows What Real Patriotism Looks Like
We have fought and died for this country, challenging America to live up to its dream and be for the prosperity of all.
BY: DANIELLE C. BELTON
Posted: July 4 2015 3:00 AM
It used to happen every Fourth of July.
Our homeowners association would place little, cheap American flags on each lawn, and every year, ours ended up in the trash. Every. Year. My parents—born in America, raised in America, the only country they’ve ever known and will know, who had no desire to leave and will die here—were only outwardly patriotic about once every four years, when the Olympics were on. And even then, that was more of a benign nationalism.
My parents, like countless others who were part of America’s outsiders trapped on the inside, had a complicated relationship with their mother country, especially since their mother country was also an abusive neglecter who constantly victim-blamed. “Why are you hitting yourself?” was her motto as she crafted an environment ripe for self-inflicted wounds.
You don’t get to choose your parents. Or your country. My parents, like millions of other black people, were just here, descendants of Africans brought here against their will, then told that they must love this country and their oppressors, no matter what horrors were inflicted upon them. Slavery. Segregation. Jim Crow. Lynchings. Bombings. Beatings. Discrimination.
For those unwilling to face what our country has done in the name of “liberty” for some, they charge black Americans a price for acceptance—for patriotism—and that price is to forget the pain inflicted.
Forget the anguish. Let it wash away with your patriotism. You can’t love America and hate her ways. You must eat the whole of our union, consume it, even if it renders you sick.
Why do you people hate America?
My parents were supposed to get over segregated water fountains and the abject poverty they were raised in. My sisters and I were supposed to forget how, even today, there are neighborhoods in our hometown of St. Louis where black people simply don’t go. From Rodney King to Michael Brown, we were supposed to get on board the “I Love America” train and leave our pain in the rearview.

Obama’s Eulogy, Which Found Its Place in History
By MICHIKO KAKUTANI
JULY 3, 2015
Barack Obama’s eulogy for the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., was remarkable not only because the president sang the opening refrain of “Amazing Grace” on live television, and not only because of his eloquence in memorializing the pastor and eight other parishioners killed by a white gunman. It was also remarkable because the eulogy drew on all of Mr. Obama’s gifts of language and empathy and searching intellect — first glimpsed in “Dreams From My Father,” his deeply felt 1995 memoir about identity and family. And because it used those gifts to talk about the complexities of race and justice, situating them within an echoing continuum in time that reflected both Mr. Obama’s own long view of history, and the panoramic vision of America, shared by Abraham Lincoln and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as a country in the process of perfecting itself.
President Obama Eulogizes Charleston Pastor as One Who Understood GraceJUNE 26, 2015
Mr. Obama’s view of the nation’s history as a more than two-century journey to make the promises of the Declaration of Independence (“that all men are created equal”) real for everyone, his former chief speechwriter, Jon Favreau, suggested in an email, is “both an American and a religious sentiment” — predicated upon the belief that individual sinners and a country scarred by the original sin of slavery can overcome the past through “persistent, courageous, sometimes frustrating efforts.”
For Mr. Obama, America is “a constant work in progress,” a nation founded upon the idea of new beginnings, and the enduring belief, as he once wrote in an essay about Lincoln, that “we can constantly remake ourselves to fit our larger dreams.” Like his two moving speeches in Selma, Ala., in 2007 and this year, Mr. Obama’s eulogy used the prism of history to amplify and crystallize the meaning of the occasion — a wide-angle lens that reminds us of the distance we’ve come from the days of slavery, segregation and Jim Crow, and the distance we have yet to travel in addressing enduring prejudice and inequities.

Health Insurance Companies Seek Big Rate Increases for 2016
By ROBERT PEAR
JULY 3, 2015
WASHINGTON — Health insurance companies around the country are seeking rate increases of 20 percent to 40 percent or more, saying their new customers under the Affordable Care Act turned out to be sicker than expected. Federal officials say they are determined to see that the requests are scaled back.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans — market leaders in many states — are seeking rate increases that average 23 percent in Illinois, 25 percent in North Carolina, 31 percent in Oklahoma, 36 percent in Tennessee and 54 percent in Minnesota, according to documents posted online by the federal government and state insurance commissioners and interviews with insurance executives.

Beauty Supply Institute paves way for Black-owned business
June 22, 2015 By NDG Staff
Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) — Since 2010, Beauty Supply Institute has held a beauty supply store ownership conference annually that has resulted in over 70 new black-owned stores to hit the U.S., Canadian and Caribbean markets. The ethnic beauty supply business is a $15 billion business with approximately 13,000 retail outlets across America.
According to Beauty Business magazine in 2012, the industry saw a 12% growth during the toughest recession years for retailers between 2007 and 2009. A study conducted by Alberto Culver showed, the beauty customer visits an OTC (over-the-counter) store on average, 22 times per year. These statistics are what contribute to the beauty retail business being such a strong sector.
The business of beauty has produced wealth for some and conversation for others as exposed in Chris Rock’s Good Hair movie and Jewish filmmaker, Aron Ranen’s The Korean Takeover: Black Hair, Korean Cash documentary. This has prompted sensation and interest around the business, however, there are many obstacles that an aspiring owner encounters on their journey to opening a store.
Beauty Supply Institute has risen to become the #1 agency that puts store ownership in the hands of minorities through their academy, conferences, and classes. They even produce business plans and other assistance that have successful gotten start-up capital for budding entrepreneurs.

Rikyrah, thanks for posting all these important July 4 items from history.
Ms Truth would bitch-slap Jason Whitlock if she were alive today.
Happy 4th of July, everyone!
And then my grandson loves watching this Dr. Suess classic. Think he’s learning anything?
Love Jane Elliot…. Very apros for Independence Day, don’t you think?
The ABSOLUTE DENIAL of white skin color as a construct to deny others their basic right to walk, talk, dress, and breathe, to get a job, is MIND-BLOWING.
Just finished watching video. Whew! The White denial was THICK!
Thick as 70s shag carpet, yahtzee. She told these folks it was an EXERCISE, but they couldn’t even get past that fact, just clinging to that whiteness & indignation to even suggest they are racists. All kinds of this going on in that video:
AND…..
Definitely, instead of allowing the exercise to bring out even one drop of empathy, they (especially the blonde who should never be allowed to be a teacher) built up the already existing historic wall into a massive rampart and launched an all out assault to maintain their/the White power system.
Yes! and the brunette on the brown eyes team, she cheated, further proving what Jane was trying to get these thick-skulled folks to understand.
THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED FOR WHITE FOLKS TO CHEAT THEIR WAY THROUGH LIFE, by cheating to keep BLACK FOLKS OUT.
You nailed it with that brunette, Ametia, and what she represents.
Low down cheating IS what it’s all about.
Please keep pointing stuff out to me as you think of it.
This is why a segment of the population is mad & angry about President Obama & his family occupying the White House.
They have completely destroyed that myth of him being elected not once but twice.
And now they can’t cope and are lashing out in anger & violence.
Yes. They are shooting arrows of poisonous hate and terrorism in an effort to avoid “conceding” their power. Well, they don’t realize they don’t even have the ability “to concede” a power. It is not in their hands anymore. They are having a deadly temper tantrum not wanting to share….like it’s all or nothing for them.
I just wish I knew how to get through to the type of person like that blonde teacher and the brunette.
LOl The brunette couldn’t stand the fact that Jane had given them the answers and her blue-eyed bretheran didn’t have the answers. Now she was in a group with other brown & black peoples who got the answers. She didn’t want the POC to have the answers and the blue-eyed not having them
How indignant she was! She was CLUELESS to the fact of her own white privilege and to the opportunity she had to LEARN. Why should she have to learn anything about non-whites and their lives? And that blonde lady, steeped in white privilege you could smell it a mile coming. How dare Jane treat them this way! Again clueless to the fact that white sumpremacist systems treat non-whites like this every minute of every day.
You’re right, Yahtzee. They could not ‘CONCEDE POWER.’ It was eating them alive not to be in control.
Really Vlad?
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent President Obama a congratulatory message Saturday to mark the U.S. Independence Day and to call for dialogue based on equal treatment and mutual respect. “In his message of congratulations, the Russian President noted that, despite the differences between the two countries, Russian-American relations remain the most important factor of international stability and security,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

The angle of that guy’s antena in his back pocket and Malia’s behnid. NOT AN ATTRACTIVE LOOK, at all.
I. DO. NOT. LIKE. IT. AT.ALL.
Who the HELL took that photo & published it? I can’t believe POTUS & FLOTUS agreed to have this photo taken of Malia and that image. I.DON’T.BELIEVE.IT
I’m with you. How dare them.
The article said Malia was ‘SPOTTED’ This wasn’t approved by the president or FLOTUS, no way. It’s despicable, whoever took it and published it.
Romney to host the Christies, Rubios at his New Hampshire home
This post has been updated
BEDFORD, N.H. — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s comeback journey begins here in New Hampshire, so the Republican presidential candidate is paying a visit to the last winner of the state’s first-in-the-nation primary and one of its most famous summertime residents.
Mitt Romney is hosting Christie and his wife, Mary Pat, at his waterfront compound on picturesque Lake Winnipesaukee on Friday night, people familiar with the plans said.
During the summer, Romney’s sprawling Wolfeboro retreat — which includes a private beach, tennis court and trails — is a playground for the 2012 GOP nominee’s huge family.
On Friday night, though, Romney had the Christies as overnight guests. But they weren’t the only non-family members in the house. Fellow GOP hopeful Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and his wife, Jeanette, also joined the Romneys for Friday night’s slumber party.

Wonder if NJ Gov. will try riding one of Romney’s water sport vehicles:

Remember the flack he got from all the conservative nut jobs when he put his state’s needs over playing the political game and accepted President Obama’s offer of federal aid after that hurricane.
That was one good thing he did before all of that bridge stuff.
You know, 3Chics, ever since I posted the photo of the NJ Gov. with the 3 word comment before it, I have been feeling awful. I am sorry about doing that. Would one of you erase that photo and also the 3 word comment please?
Tee hee hee. ALL The photos stay, yahtzee.
Oh ish! I just deleted it b/c Yahtc asked. Repost Yahtc.
Thanks, SG2. When I posted that, it was because I was thinking How can the NJ Gov. “work on the nation” if he doesn’t even “work on himself” ?
But, “working on himself” could be more complicated than I understand it to be. Anyway, I started feeling bad for being petty and judgmental.
lol So how much you think the “tuition” is and how many of the inbreds could even afford to send their cumwastes to the Ozarks for terrorist camp? I can just see the slew of GoFundMe accounts now! LMAO!
Violet, Thomas ‘ROBB” is doing just that. Charging the crackas to hate & lose any sense of humainty.
Raising $$ for each other to hate & kill.Who are the thugs & criminals in this society.
They’re lower than any animals that I’ve ever been connected to.
He is no better than Hiltler
So basically, they have now ‘formalized’ “Dylann Roof 101: Course on White Supremacist Terrorism”.
SPOT ON
You have brought the truth and education this week, SG2. Thank you.
I want folks to see for themselves. The racist hate is real. These ppl want war against black people.
“racial redemption’? GTFOH
These dummies have really LOST their grip on reality, thinking all these decades, hell, centuries haved faired in this country because of their skin, even the white sheets, billy clubs, dogs & water hoses can’t save their sorry asses from God’s DIVERSE UNIVERSE of Souls.
Bye now, and you’re not welcome for playing!
Good Morning Everyone.
