First lady toasts new White House social secretary at VIP ladies night
Washington’s most powerful women, including first lady Michelle Obama, have a message for Deesha Dyer, who’s just two months into her new job as the White House social secretary: We’ve got your back, girl.
Okay, no one actually said that but the sentiment was the same at the VIP ladies night on Tuesday. Debra Lee, CEO of BET, along with a host committee that read like the dream cast of the Real Movers and Shakers of Washington (Sharon Malone, Toni Cook Bush, Michele Norris, Sylvia White, Jeanine Liburd and Lauren Wesley Wilson) gathered a group of about 60 women to raise a glass (and open their arms) to Dyer at Lee’s Massachusetts Avenue Heights manse.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts will be replaced, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has announced.
Batts drew widespread criticism for his response to riots that erupted after the April death of a young black man in police custody. In an interview with CNN in May, Batts acknowledged that police were not prepared for such massive demonstrations — particularly once they turned violent.
Anthony Batts AIN’T got to go home but he has to get the hell out of that Police Commissioner position.
He did a PISS-POOR job running that PD. PERIOD.
He’s done a piss-poor job everywhere he’s presided as police chief. He’s one of those with very little regard for his own people. But he’ll be ok. He ‘retired’ as Oakland Police Chief – full pension and all in 2011. Meanwhile Oscar Grant’s family don’t have their son or any sort of justice.

Last night I was watching the PBS show called First Peoples Africa. It’s broken into Africa, Asia, Americas and Australia. In the Africa episode they talked about a woman who was doing family genealogy. She was disappointed she could only go back to 1870. After watching a Skip Gates special she decided to go the DNA route. She asked a male cousin for a DNA sample. When the lab ran the DNA sample they said they’d never seen anything like it here. Her male cousins DNA was over 300,000 years old. I was like damn!
http://youtu.be/4RgpO1p9e14
I’ve been watching “First Peoples” too. What they’re finding out from DNA analysis is that all of the people on earth right now are hybrids. We have DNA from modern humans and archaic humans. For example, between 1 and 3 percent of the DNA of Europeans is Neanderthal DNA. They think that groups of modern humans left Africa and met up with Neanderthal humans just outside of Africa. The Neanderthals were moving south because they were getting away from areas that were too cold to inhabit at that time. Breeding with archaic humans provided genetic shortcuts for modern humans. Archaic humans would have had tens of thousands of years to build up immunities, for example, and those could be passed on to modern humans by breeding. Anyhow, it is a totally fascinating series that I highly recommend.
I love both these actors, so I can’t wait to see this.

Sophie Okonedo and Adrian Lester are set to star in Peter Moffat’s original 6-part BBC political thriller – “Undercover.”
To be broadcast on BBC One (not ETA yet), the series is described as bold and gripping, starring Okonedo as lead character Maya, who’s about to become the first black Director of Public Prosecutions, and Adrian Lester as her husband, Nick. Just as her life comes under intense public scrutiny, Maya discovers that her husband and the father of her children, has been lying to her for years. Is he concealing an affair, or is it something altogether more sinister? If she digs up his real past, will she be safe? And who wants her in this new job and why? Twenty years ago, Nick was a fearless and dedicated undercover officer, infiltrating organisations considered a danger to society because of their political beliefs. Nick built himself a fake past and now with his wife unsuspecting, and his conscience killing him – his secret identity may compromise the new Director of Public Prosecutions – Maya, his wife.

Marco Rubio’s Economic Plan Calls For Students To Sell Themselves To Private Investors
by Alice Ollstein Posted on July 7, 2015 at 1:42 pm
Florida Senator and Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio described his economic platform in a speech Tuesday in Chicago, touching on well-worn GOP priorities including slashing corporate taxes from 35 to 25 percent, further deregulating the private sector, restricting family immigration, and resisting calls to raise the minimum wage. Taking several specific shots at Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, Rubio said his plan would avoid “pumping more of today’s money into yesterday’s programs,” and bring the U.S. into the future.
In the speech, Rubio also called for a “revolutionized” higher education system. If elected president, he promised to “bust…the cartel of existing colleges and universities” by loosening the rules for accreditation so that “innovative, low-cost competitors” can court students. But critics say the government accreditation process is already far too loose, allowing predatory for-profit chains like Corinthian Colleges to win federal approval and funding even as they mislead students into paying for essentially worthless degrees.
He also touted the “Student Right to Know Before You Go Act” he co-sponsored with Oregon Democrat Ron Wyden — a plan extremely similar to one President Obama pushed for last year that ranks colleges by how much their tuition costs and how much money their graduates make.
Lamenting the “shadow of debt hovering over millions of graduates,” Rubio then proposed a model already suggested by his rival Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ): allowing rich individuals or hedge funds to pay a students tuition and collect their investment back post-graduation.
“It may result in a profit for the investor or it may not – but unlike with loans, none of the risk lies with the student,” Rubio said.
He expanded on this idea in a speech last year:
……………
But these “Student Investment Plans,” which also have the Orwellian name “human capital contracts,” raise many serious concerns. For one, investors may refuse to cover entire fields of students not likely to bring in the big bucks after graduation, or would charge them a staggeringly high percentage of their income. For those backing this plan, such as the conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute (AEI), this poses no problem.
“Isn’t this ‘unfair’ to those wanting to be librarians, teachers, social workers, etc., since they would have to forego more of their incomes to satisfy the human capital contract? Not really,” writes AEI Adjunct Scholar Richard Vedder. “Society puts a relatively low value on those jobs.”
Additionally, following Rubio’s math of 4 percent over 10 years, a graduate would have to earn an extremely low salary for the investor not to make a profit. Vedder and other advocates of the plan are less cautious, and have voiced support for plans that take as high as 25 percent of a graduates salary for multiple decades after they enter the workforce.

Brownback tests marriage-equality ruling with executive order
07/08/15 10:49 AM—UPDATED 07/08/15 10:51 AM
By Steve Benen
Even the fiercest anti-gay officials must realize at a certain level a Supreme Court ruling leaves them few options. When five justices brought marriage equality to the nation two weeks ago, the law of the land came into focus – in the United States, couples enjoy equal marriage rights, whether the couples or straight or gay.
The challenge for conservative Republican officials is no longer how to prevent same-sex unions; that fight is over. Rather, the next phase is figuring how to permit at least some discrimination going forward.
The Wichita Eagle reported late yesterday, of example, on a new policy from Kansas’ Republican governor.
Gov. Sam Brownback issued an executive order Tuesday prohibiting state government from taking action against clergy members or religious organizations that deny services to couples based on religious beliefs.
Among other things, the order is intended to protect religious organizations that provide adoption services for the state from having to place children with gay couples if that conflicts with their beliefs.
The full text of the executive order is online here.
In a public statement, the governor said his order protects “Kansas clergy and religious organizations from being forced to participate in activities that violate their sincerely and deeply held beliefs.”
At the surface, such a policy seems wildly unnecessary. There’s been some chatter in far-right circles about ministers being forced to officiate at same-sex weddings, but the argument has always been ridiculous – the government has never been able to dictate to clergy which kind of services they must perform. The recent Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality doesn’t change this at all.

Obama, Dean, McCarthy: What Presidential Candidate Does Bernie Sanders Most Resemble?
by ED KILGORE
PublishedJULY 8, 2015, 6:00 AM EDT
As Bernie Sanders’ crowd sizes and early-state poll standings rapidly rise, a lot of pundits who are seeing the veteran senator in a new light are undoubtedly beginning to ask the question: Who is this guy, really? And the answer the pundits crave cannot be found in his biography or his campaign message, but involves the precedent we can use to understand what he represents. What iconic—or for that matter, completely forgotten—presidential candidate of the past does he most resemble?
………………………………………
The answer Bernie’s backers might be tempted to offer is Barack Obama, who defeated an allegedly “inevitable” front-runner named Hillary Clinton on the passion and muscle of liberal activists and went on to become a two-term president. There are three problems with that analogy, all of them important. First, Sanders is running as much against Obama’s legacy as against anything pertaining specifically to Hillary Clinton. Second, all the revisionist history in the world won’t erase the fact that Obama, despite his strong appeal to liberal activists angry at HRC’s vote for the Iraq War, had a trans-ideological and even bipartisan appeal that Sanders is too consistently credentialed to rival. (Bernie is not going to get any primary endorsements from, say, Sam Nunn or David Boren).
Third, and most importantly, Sanders has zero demonstrated history of support from the African-American and Latino voters who will play a huge role in the nomination contest after Iowa and New Hampshire. Obama won well over 80 percent of the African-American vote and an estimated one-third of the Latino vote against Clinton, who had strong initial backing in both communities. Particularly if HRC gets implicit or explicit support from Obama next year, her residual strength among minority voters could well stop Sanders in his tracks even if he sweeps the exceptionally honkified first two states.

CASS LAKE, Minn. – It began with Generation X, then Y and now, Generation I.
The nation’s capitol will welcome 800 Generation Indigenous, or Gen I, members for the “Two Worlds, One Future: Defining Our Own Success” tribal youth gathering in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.
Keezer, 19, was selected out of a nationwide pool of Native American youth between the ages of 14 and 24 to participate in President Barack Obama’s summit at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel, where administration officials and the White House Council on Native American Affairs will meet with youth.
“I’m very excited to go, but then I’m kind of nervous,” Keezer said. “I’ve never been to Washington, D.C., or flown on a plane before.”
Keezer said a visit to the White House was canceled due to the number of youth attending the conference and whether Obama will make an appearance is not known.
“I heard both the president and first lady will be there, since it’s actually their campaign,” Keezer said.

Drama Series Based on Documentary ‘Muscle Shoals’ (On the Uniting Power of Music) in Development

July 7, 2015 at 5:23PM
Currently in the works is a TV series based on a documentary that premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, titled “Muscle Shoals,” from director Greg “Freddy” Camalier, which tells the story of the tiny Alabama town called Muscle Shoals, where a group of unassuming, yet incredibly talented locals came together and spawned some of the greatest music of all time: “Mustang Sally,” “I Never Loved a Man,” “Wild Horses,” and many more.
Johnny Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil, is teaming up with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Produced, and City Entertainment, to develop what will apparently be a scripted series (not a documentary series), which will go behind the music to tell the stories of Muscle Shoals.
During the most incendiary periods of racial hostility, white folks and black folks came together to create music that would last for generations and give birth to the incomparable “Muscle Shoals sound.”

Walker’s office tied to open-records controversy
07/08/15 08:03 AM—UPDATED 07/08/15 08:23 AM
By Steve Benen
The front-page, above-the-fold headline in today’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel probably won’t make Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) happy. “Walker office admits role in open records proposal,” it reads.
At issue is a controversy we covered on Monday. To briefly recap, last Thursday, shortly before the start of a holiday weekend and in a late-night session, Republican state legislators quietly added a provision to the budget to gut Wisconsin’s open-records laws. The point wasn’t subtle: the policy would have “dramatically curtailed the kind of information available to the public about the work that public officials do.”
GOP lawmakers approved the change, but when reporters noticed, they quickly backpedaled – not only was the proposal soon dropped, but the Republicans involved each denied having anything to do with it.
Of course, it wasn’t a miraculous budget provision, appearing by magic; someone had to put it there. And so, we had a mystery – who tried to gut Wisconsin’s open-records law and why?
Before anyone dismisses this as a story of little interest outside the Badger State itself, there’s a reason national outlets are keeping an eye on this one. Indeed, the Wisconsin State Journal reported overnight:
Gov. Scott Walker’s office was involved in drafting dramatic changes to the state’s open records law that would have made it harder for the public to monitor how its government works, a spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday.
Spokeswoman Laurel Patrick’s statement came after numerous inquiries from the State Journal in recent days and after Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Tuesday that Walker’s office collaborated with Assembly and Senate leaders to draft the changes.

‘Super PACs’ Take On New Role, Organizing Voters
by TRIP GABRIEL
JULY 7, 2015
IOWA CITY — College students supporting Rand Paul for president were out in force going door to door in this university town recently, using their iPad Minis to help identify Republicans committed to voting for the Kentucky senator in next year’s Iowa caucuses.
And when Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana visited the state the same week in June for town-hall-style meetings in Waukee, Council Bluffs and Sioux City, his supporters collected voters’ names and emails with an eye toward caucus day.
But the Paul and Jindal campaigns were not behind these time-honored grass-roots organizing efforts. Instead, in a twist that shows how even retail politics is being transformed by a flood of loosely regulated big money, the two candidates’ courtship of voters is being carried out by “super PACs,” which are using their abundant war chests to move into the nuts and bolts of campaign operations.
In previous election cycles, super PACs — which can raise unlimited donations from corporations and individuals alike — largely channeled money from wealthy donors into political advertising. But now they are branching out into what had seemed a fundamental function of a campaign committee: organizing voters one at a time.
