#SandraBland found dead in Texas jail cell

Sandra BlandCHICAGO (WLS) — Newly obtained video shows the arrest of 28-year-old Sandra Bland, a Naperville woman whose death at a Texas jail is being angrily questioned by her friends and relatives.

Sandra Bland was found dead in a Waller County, Texas, jail cell on Monday at 9 a.m. after being arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer during a routine traffic stop, the I-Team has learned. Authorities say her death appears to be suicide.

In numerous emails and phone calls to the ABC7 I-Team, her friends and relatives say they do not believe the official version of what happened and say this is a case of foul play in a county with a history racial intolerance.

Now, the I-Team has obtained video of Bland’s arrest. The video shows police on top of Bland, who is on the ground with several officers restraining her as she questions why they are being so rough. The video was shot by a bystander Friday morning, three days before she died in police custody.

Bland was pulled over Friday for improper signaling a lane change, according to Waller County Sheriff’s Department officials. They say she was charged with “Assault on a Public Servant” and taken into custody by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

“After he pulled her out of the car, forced her and tossed her to the ground, knee to the neck, and arrested her,” says her friend Malcom Jackson.

Bland’s friends say she had been with her family in suburban Chicago over the July 4th holiday, and drove to Texas for a job interview at her alma mater, Texas Prairie View A & M. Family members say she got the position and was to begin working in student outreach today.

In the video of the arrest, an officer is heard telling the bystander taking the video to leave.

In the video he shot, Bland is heard saying, “You just slammed my head into the ground. Do you not even care about that? I can’t even hear!”

Then, as she is taken into custody, she repeats, “You slammed me into the ground and everything.”

We also need to see an admission that policing in America has become a disease that black and brown men, women, and children are dying from. White supremacists seek out jobs in LE and criminal justice to continue spreading death.Legality has trumped morality at every turn and white supremacists are using legality to justify their lack of morality. It must stop!

I cried! Police in this country need to be dismantled. They need to have bachelor’s degrees with sociology, psychology, law and constitution classes. They need to perform community service as well. Crime prevention isn’t about a reaction to a crime but ensuring the crime doesn’t happen. These are old white racists running shit. They all have got to go! A traffic stop does not equal jail, does not equal death. They are bathing themselves in our tears right now. Shameless!!

Just like Freddie Gray, they brutally attacked Sandra Bland and she never received medical treatment, because had she gotten it, they would have found evidence of the injuries these filthy, dirty, lowdown murdering cops inflicted on her.

I want Sandra back in the world living with us. This is just too heartbreaking. I wish we all could have been standing with her, encircling her in a safe wall of people so that it would have been impossible for anyone to get near her and hurt her.

It is just so sad…she died alone, she died alone away from her family and her many friends.

    • Liza says:

These are dangerous times, to be sure. This beautiful 28 year old woman was beaten by these cops and taken back to the jailhouse to be lynched. That’s going to be the story, what else could it possibly be?

Because of social media, things are happening. Things are being exposed that the cops and other players in the “criminal justice” system do not want to be exposed. The rebel flags that symbolize white supremacy are being taken down and the hypocrisy is being exposed. The guilty ones do not like the exposure, they are mad, and they think they can stop this the way they always have, with violence and hatred and intimidation.

      • Just tweeted this.

      • yahtzeebutterfly says:

Liza, your comment is right on point.

The cops did not like Sandra speaking the truth to them about being unjustly slammed to the ground for a traffic violation.

They did not like her asserting her rights and speaking up for herself.

Inmate found hanging at Waller County jail

      James Harper Howell

      http://m.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Inmate-found-hanging-at-Waller-County-jail-4012244.php

Authorities are investigating the death of a 29-year-old inmate after he was discovered at Waller County jail Friday morning.

James Harper Howell IV, of Bandera, was found about 11:55 a.m. hanging from a bed sheet that was tied to a ceiling vent in one of the jail’s day rooms, according to the Waller County Sheriff’s Office.

It took deputies three days to locate and notify Howell’s next of kin.

Deputies said Howell had been in custody since he was arrested Oct. 25 by the Department of Public Safety for assault on a public servant, evading arrest/detention with a vehicle and possession of marijuana, a felony.

On the day he was found hanging, he had been sitting in the day room by himself watching television. Jailers had routinely checked on him. He spoke with jailers and gave no indication he would engage in suicidal behavior.

The Texas Rangers, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, the Attorney General’s Office and the Waller County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the case.

It’s frightening to think we could be stopped also and never make it back home.

Give those KILLER COPS enough days, and they will come up with lies to cover up their crimes. Remember, they tried to plant a knife on Freddie Gray, calling it an illegal weapon.

So typical!! Dismantle American police forces and start from scratch. One state at a time!!!! Slavery never disappeared, it evolved.

  24. yahtzeebutterfly says:

So, just when will the Texas Rangers have a press conference on their investigation into Sandra’s death?

    • Ametia says:

Answer: As soon as they concoct a vicious round of LIES to tell before the cameras.

      • sunshine616 says:

It takes time to create story lines from available videos, statements and evidence. They have to make sure they cover all of their bases. God forbid they come up with a story and then a new video comes out. Can’t have that!

An incident from 2012 involving Sheriff Glenn Smith:

“WALLER COUNTY SHERIFF vs HARRIS COUNTY SHERIFF”

    https://youtu.be/KfniCyhXQEAPublished on May 22, 2012&rel=0

“This video is for you, which is an actual recorded incident that occurred during the TRI-County Fire last September 2011.

“This video shows how the Sheriff of Waller County, Glenn Smith, treated another Law Enforcement agency {Harris County} that came in to assist the citizens of Waller County and Montgomery in their time of need.

“The incident occurred around 2:00am in the morning when a staff member of the Waller County Sheriff’s office {Heather Owens} attempted to go through a “Roadblock” on Farm to Market 1488 at Remington Forest.

“Ms. Owens was in an un-marked vehicle, and was NOT in uniform. Ms. Owens declared that she was with the Waller County Sheriff’s office, but did NOT have any identification on her person to prove such allegation.

“Harris officers refused her entry through the roadblock. Ms. Owen then called Sheriff Glenn Smith and told them that Harris County would not allow her to pass through. Ms. Owens waited at the roadblock for the Sheriff to arrive.

“When Sheriff Smith arrived at the location in a black, un-marked vehicle, he parked behind a Harris County patrol vehicle.

“Sheriff Glenn Smith had initially called for a Harris County Supervisor, to come to the location. Mean time, he was very belligerent to the HC Deputies and then the supervisor. He ordered them to leave immediately or he would TOW their vehicles. Sheriff Smith accused Harris County Deputies of not allowing emergency vehicles and fire department vehicles through the roadblocks.

“When the one of the Harris County deputy’s went to turn around and leave, the inadvertently backed up and “bumped” into the black vehicle that was parked behind him.

“Sheriff Smith then became very irate and accused the Harris County personnel for intentionally backing into his vehicle. He set out the file an accident report. He then decided to file criminal mischief on the Harris County deputy.

“The attitude of the Waller County Sheriff Smith is very un-professional and is certainly a negative reflection on all Waller County Citizens and other elected officials.

“Your Sheriff should have reviewed the situation at hand before acting in an ill-rational manner.

“1. First of all, he should have confronted his staff member {Heather Owens} for: A. Attempting to pass through the roadblock with out her Waller County credentials (as far as the Harris County officers knew, she was just a citizen attempting to gain access to the area). B. Questioned why, at 2:00am is she in plain clothes attempting to go through a defined roadblock.

“2. Been courtesy to another Law Enforcement Agency that was on scene to assist the Waller County Citizens.

“3. Since, the sheriff knew of prior incidences days before: A. Taken action at that time to find out who had directed the Harris County personnel to go to that particular location. (This incident was less than 1/2 inside the Waller County Line). B. Find out how long the current Harris County personnel had been at that location. C. Taken into consideration that these Law Enforcement officers are familiar with Waller County Roads. D. Realized he is representing every citizen in Waller County.

“4. Realize the valuable resources that were being wasted by Waller County and Harris County by creating a bigger issue, rather than “solving” an issue.

“During a time of crisis, a REAL Leader, would use the veracity of energy to solve a problem has Sheriff Smith used to create a problem. Sheriff Glenn Smith should not have let his “Narcissistic Ego” interfere with the over all safety and well being of all citizens and to be gracious to all assistances being offered.

“The War as against the FIRE, not those who were trying to help protect the lives and property of the citizens. This has been degrading representation of all citizens of Waller County.

I”t is not known at this time, what the out come of the “Accident” report or the threat of “Criminal Mischief” charge against the Harris County Deputy. We do know that the Sheriff of Harris County, Adrian Garcia, did have a conversation with Glenn Smith about this issue. SHAME ON YOU, SHERIFF GLENN SMITH !”

I found this article about the Waller Sheriff’s Department written by Joe Southern on March 25, 2009 about a sheriff who still works for the department:

    “Another Waller Deputy in Trouble”

    http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/another-waller-deputy-in-trouble/article_b8e94435-1566-51d8-9b39-62a56348be0a.html

For the second time in a week a Waller County sheriff’s deputy is in trouble with the law.

Chief Deputy Craig T. Davis, 47, was charged last Wednesday of assaulting his 16-year-old son.

“He signed a no-arrest bond,” said Sheriff Glenn Smith. “His court date is in two weeks.”
Davis was charged with assaulting a family member in Harris County and posted a $1,500 bond. He remains on duty with the Waller County Sheriff’s Office.

“There has been some history there” between Davis and his son,” Smith said.
Smith said Davis could lose his job and career if convicted, though he didn’t think the issue would get that far.

“He’s got a clean record with no marks on it of any kind,” the sheriff said of his chief deputy.
According to published reports, Davis allegedly had an argument with his son on March 12. The boy went to his mother’s house afterward and his mother called police. Investigators said there is evidence the teen was involved in a physical altercation.

On March 11, investigators with the Texas Attorney General’s office arrested Waller County Deputy Robert Young on a warrant issued out of District Court in Travis County. The warrant is a state jail felony charge. Young posted a $5,000 surety bond after being arraigned by justice of the peace for precinct 2 of Waller County.

Smith said the charges stem from an incident back when Young was an officer with the Hempstead Police Department. Smith was police chief then.

He said Young was injured in the line of duty in 2007 and filed a victim’s assistance claim. The alleged falsification of documents stemmed from that claim, Smith noted.

In a press release, Smith noted, “This claim has nothing to do with his official duties as a Deputy Sheriff for Waller County, and he has been reassigned to non-law enforcement duties pending further action by Travis County law enforcement officials.”

Smith was elected sheriff last year and began work Jan. 1. He hired both Davis and Young shortly thereafter, with Davis coming from Tomball.

Texas sheriff involved in the death of Sandra Bland fired from previous post for racism

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/07/16/1402770/-Texas-Sheriff-involved-in-the-death-of-Sandra-Bland-fired-from-previous-post-for-racism

Sandra Bland died in police custody this past Monday. Visiting Texas from Chicago to interview for a college job at her alma mater of Prairie View A&M, she was pulled over for a routine traffic violation (failure to use her turn signal). Everything from that point forward screams racism and foul play, including her death in the Waller County jail Monday.
The first red flag is that Bland was officially arrested on Friday for assaulting a police officer. What we see from a bystander video is her telling the officers she is in pain and cannot hear after her head was slammed on the ground by the male arresting officer. The video is below.

We have now learned that Waller County Sheriff Glenn Smith, who made the first public comments about Bland’s in-custody death, was suspended for documented cases of racism when he was chief of police in Hempstead, Texas, in 2007. After serving his suspension, more complaints of racism came in, and Smith was actually fired as chief of police in Hempstead:

Council members are reviewing video of four arrests and detentions over the past month. The officers and police chief, who are the targets of the complaints, are white. Some residents are calling for a third of the city’s 15 person police force to be suspended, disciplined, or fired.
Allegations of racism have led to the Hempstead police chief being suspended and ordered to take anger management classes.

The Hempstead city council has been reviewing the case since last week and finally came to a decision at around 2am Tuesday. A number of residents have come forward with claims of racism by at least four white police officers.

The council reviewed the complaints, along with videotapes before making their decision to punish Chief Glen Smith. Some say it wasn’t enough. The chief says he respects the decision.

“My action during the arrest did not meet professionalism as it should with language and I’m not above policy and procedure, no more than any officer of this city,” said Chief Smith.

I was just concerned about its preservation. Perhaps you can create a clip of it with the important parts.

      • I have it, Yahtc. Ametia sent me the video. I have it downloaded but haven’t had a chance to do anything with it just yet. So much information coming out and trying to keep up so I won’t miss any. TYSM.

Yes, I have seen how busy you are in both forums!

Why would a Black woman who just got her dream job commit suicide over being arrested for traffic stop? #PoliceBrutality #SandraBland

  42. rikyrah says:

    Mardi for Change @MardiHolland

Why didn’t the arresting officers want to be recorded #WhatHappenedToSandraBland https://youtu.be/IYim6pDZV0Y #SandraBland we need answers

  43. rikyrah says:

Thank you for frontpaging this. There is absolutely no way that she committed suicide. I simply don’t believe it. Will never believe it.

    • yahtzeebutterfly says:

You are right, rikyrah….absolutely no way! She even thanked the witness who was recording her arrest. She was advocating against police brutality before all of this happened and was looking forward to her new job at the college there as a student outreach administrator which was to start yesterday.

This is one case we need to push and push until we get the TRUTH. I could not sleep last night thinking of Sandy.

  44. Far too many dying….

    • Liza says:

Yeah, the cops bought Dylann a happy meal or some damn thing, can’t remember exactly what he ordered.

      • sunshine616 says:

Makes so much sense. You know how when your kid does something good you reward them with a happy meal…….cops were just rewarding him for a job well done.

  45. DA Elton Mathis, we don’t believe your suicide label you’ve attached to #SandraBland. #WhatHappenedToSandraBland?

  46. How in the living hell does Sandra Bland get stopped for a traffic violation & end up dead? Waller County, you have some explaining to do.

  47. Sandra Bland failed to signal while changing lanes & ended up DEAD. Over a fking traffic violation? She hanged herself my arse!
