Silicon Valley, Seeking Diversity, Focuses on Blacks

OAKLAND, Calif. — More than a decade before diversity became a hot issue in Silicon Valley, Jason Young came home on winter break from Harvard to discover that his family was being evicted.
Having grown up in a single-parent home with an absent father who was frequently incarcerated, Mr. Young, 33, can identify with other young black men he now calls “hidden geniuses” — the promising male teenagers who grow up in challenging circumstances mere miles away, but light-years apart, from Silicon Valley’s tech money machine.
That experience led Mr. Young to found the Hidden Genius Project two years ago. The program immerses high school men of color in coding, web and app design, team building and other skills intended to give them a leg up in the tech economy. Mr. Young says he focused on young men because similar groups existed for young women, and because young males face particular challenges in school and their communities.
As part of an initiative to put more women into top positions at Salesforce, a cloud software company, Cindy Robbins was promoted to head of human resources. She and a colleague raised concerns with the chief executive that women’s pay might not be on par with that of their male counterparts. A companywide review of salaries confirmed their suspicions.
Google’s leaders have said that they are unhappy about the firm’s poor gender diversity, and about the severe underrepresentation of blacks and Hispanics among its work force.Bits Blog:

“She looks for ways to let a candidate really let their personality and their quirks out,” Kristina Schake, a former aide to Mrs. Obama and currently the deputy communications director to Mrs. Clinton’s campaign, said of Ms. DeGeneres.
Ms. Schake said Ms. DeGeneres’s interview was an important part of a broader media plan this fall, including a range of online and nontraditional outlets. “You’ll see Hillary doing lots of these kinds of venues so that Americans can get to know her not just as a woman behind a podium,” she said.
Before the taping, Mary Connelly, an executive producer for the show, said, “I would not expect Hillary Clinton to dance.” But during a commercial break, Mrs. Clinton, onstage with the singer Pink and the comedian Amy Schumer, clapped her hands and swayed her hips, swept up in the silliness of “Ellen…”

Hillary Clinton apologizes for e-mail system: ‘I take responsibility’
A day after again declining to apologize for her use of a private e-mail system while she was secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton told an interviewer Tuesday that the arrangement was a mistake and that she is “sorry” for it.
“That was a mistake. I’m sorry about that. I take responsibility,” Clinton said in an interview with ABC News.

India’s Middle-Class Revolt

Protests by members of a relatively prosperous caste in India who want to be included in affirmative action programs highlight a major problem: India isn’t creating enough good jobs. This is a big challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has built his political career on promises to reform and modernize the stalled economy.
Different groups of Indians have often demanded government jobs and university admissions that are set aside for people from tribal communities and the lowest rungs of the caste system who are among the poorest in the country. But the recent protests by the Patel clan, of the Patidar caste, are significant because the group is part of the middle class and is from Gujarat, a state that grew rapidly when Mr. Modi ran it for 12 years before becoming prime minister last year.
The fact that 500,000 Patels, who have been a big part of Mr. Modi’s electoral base, attended a rally late last month to press their demands is a rebuke of the prime minister’s economic policies.
The Patidar campaign, which is led by a 22-year-old firebrand named Hardik Patel, seeks a bigger slice of the economic pie. But no matter how officials decide to allot government quotas for the underprivileged, the main problem is that there is not enough pie to go around.
With half of India’s 1.2 billion people 25 or younger, the need to create more jobs is acute. Nearly half of all workers are employed in agriculture, a sector that produces just 17 percent of the gross domestic product. And most of the rest not in agriculture — about 85 percent in 2012, the latest year for which there is data — work for employers with fewer than 20 employees.
It should come as no surprise that young Indians, especially those in the middle class like the Patels, are frustrated. Many have college degrees but still cannot land the kinds of professional jobs that they want. About 25 percent of college-age Indians were enrolled in higher education in 2013, up from 11 percent in 2003, according to the World Bank.
In theory, the increased number of educated workers should help to expand the manufacturing and service sectors. But companies in India are unable or unwilling to expand because it is so hard to operate there.

It wasn’t obvious at the time, but one of the more important moments of the 2012 presidential election came about six months before Election Day. Republican Mitt Romney sat down with Mark Halperin, who pressed the GOP nominee for specifics about the economy.
HALPERIN: Would you like to be more specific about what the unemployment rate would be like at the end of your first year?
ROMNEY: I cannot predict precisely what the rate would be at the end of one year. I can tell you that over a period of four years, by virtue of the polices that we put in place, we can get the unemployment rate down to 6 percent, perhaps a little lower.
As we later noted, Romney seemed fairly confident that once the United States was freed from the scourge of Obama’s crushing, anti-growth agenda, the unemployment rate would drop to “6 percent” – maybe even “a little lower” – by the end of 2016. It would all come about thanks to the Romney agenda, after it’s “put in place.”
Shortly after making the promise, Romney appeared on Fox News to tout his ambitious prediction. “People all across the country are saying, ‘Wow, 6 percent sounds pretty good,’” the Republican boasted.
As it turns out, Americans backed President Obama anyway, and on Friday, we saw the unemployment rate fall to 5.1%, its lowest point in over seven years. That sounds “pretty good,” too.

On Thursday, before the Panthers played the Steelers in the final exhibition game, Newton posted a photo to his Instagram account of himself with seven of his close friends on a trip to Mexico.
Some of the friends are wearing bandanas on their faces and making hand gestures while Newton, in the front, has his hands in the form of a ‘W.’
Most of the comments centered around gang culture and whether Newton was a Crip or Blood.
Friday Newton took to IG again, to set the record straight, using another photo to highlight the stereotypes and judgments that serve no real purpose.

Baltimore reaches $6.4 million settlement with Freddie Gray family
Baltimore officials have reached a $6.4 million wrongful death settlement with the family of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old man who died in April from a neck injury he suffered in police custody, according to two people with knowledge of the agreement. Such a deal would have to be approved by the city’s Board of Estimates, the governing body that oversees the city’s spending.

Republicans Engage in More Treason to Undermine the President on Climate Change

The Republicans have become used to treason, first undermining President Obama’s efforts toward a negotiated nuclear settlement with Iran, and now, as Politico reports, his goal of a climate change agreement:
Top Republican lawmakers are planning a wide-ranging offensive — including outreach to foreign officials by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office — to undermine President Barack Obama’s hopes of reaching an international climate change agreement that would cement his environmental legacy.
This is not entirely new. As far back as this spring, McConnell very publicly addressed foreign nations when, during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing, he told EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy,:
One final point: You have assured international officials that the U.S. is serious about imposing climate change regulations. I’d say what we have learned from your recent time on Capitol Hill is this is not the case. I would remind you that the Executive Branch is only one-third of the U.S. government. The Congress, of course, didn’t pass Cap and Trade back in 2009 and 2010 when the Democrats had very large majorities here. So, the failure of Congress to sign off should signal to other countries that they should proceed with caution into the December 2015 climate talks in Paris.
It is one thing to cast doubts and misinformation at home. Republicans have been doing that for decades. They are even within their legal rights to try to block legislation in Congress. But it is entirely another matter altogether if they subvert the president’s will by working with foreign governments to accomplish their goal.

Directed and written by George, the film made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year.
Produced by Leslie Norville and executive produced by Dorria L. Ball, Ingrid Graham and Copeland, the film provides a behind-the-curtain look at the daily life of Copeland, the first African American female soloist at New York’s American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in two decades. On June 30, 2015, Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in ABT’s 75-year history.

Actor Stephen Rider has been cast to play New York City District Attorney Blake Tower in the second season of Marvel’s Netflix Daredevil series, according to Deadline.
According to the Marvel wiki, Blake Tower ran against the incumbent Foggy Nelson for the District Attorney’s office in New York City. Blake has also been an ally to Matt Murdock (Daredevil) at times, sharing information with him to help capture many of the city’s notorious criminals including the Jester, Mind-Wave and the Purple Man.

Obama turns the ‘lame duck’ narrative on its head

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman will meet with President Obama today, and as Politico put it, the Saudi king will meet with a U.S. leader “with a swagger in his step.”
Nearly four months after he skipped President Barack Obama’s high-profile Camp David summit, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman will arrive at the White House to find a strengthened Obama and less leeway to influence U.S. policy toward Iran.
The elderly Arab monarch’s White House visit Friday comes just days after Obama secured the Senate votes he needs for the Iran nuclear deal to survive Congress.
Senate support for the diplomatic solution is still growing – in addition to the three new endorsements yesterday, Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) announced his backing for the policy this morning. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) announced his opposition around the same time, but as a practical matter, his siding with the far-right on the issue won’t change the outcome.
Under the circumstances, it’s tough to blame the president for having “a swagger in his step,” not just because he’s overcome the Saudis’ skepticism about the international agreement, but also because Obama has had quite a bit of success lately.
Barring any unexpected developments, the successful implementation of the new U.S. policy in Iran is among the most consequential diplomatic success stories in a generation.

Cheney’s Iran lie exposed in dramatic fashion

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is scheduled to speak today at a D.C. think tank, delivering remarks intended to condemn the international nuclear agreement with Iran. If an ignominious exchange over the weekend was evidence of his expertise, however, Cheney might want to reschedule, brush up on the details, and rethink his approach.
The underlying challenge for the failed former V.P. is the degree to which his own Iran policy failed spectacularly. Iran didn’t have a meaningful nuclear weapons program until Tehran developed one – during the Bush/Cheney administration. At the time, in response to Iran’s nuclear program, the Bush/Cheney administration did nothing – except, of course, strengthen Iran’s regional power by invading Iraq.
With this in mind, Fox News’ Chris Wallace reminded Cheney over the weekend that Iran “went from zero known [nuclear] centrifuges in operation to more than 5,000.” The Republican’s response was extraordinary.
The Fox News host flashed that data on screen so no one could miss it, and added: “So in fairness, didn’t you leave – the Bush-Cheney administration – leave President Obama with a mess?”
“Well, I don’t think of it that way,” Cheney countered. […] “But the centrifuges went from zero to 5,000,” Wallace pressed.
“Well, they may well have gone but that happened on Obama’s watch, not on our watch,” Cheney replied.
That’s the exact opposite of the truth, as Wallace, to his credit, quickly reminded the former V.P. Iran’s nuclear program blossomed, not under President Obama, but during the Bush/Cheney era.
Cheney wants Americans to blame Obama for a mess Cheney created. Indeed, either Cheney doesn’t know what happened in Iran on his watch, in which case his ignorance effectively disqualifies him from the debate, or Cheney simply doesn’t know the facts, which renders his misguided opinions meaningless.

“Your Prayers Have Been Answered” – ‘Black Jesus’ Has Been Resurrected … Again

The “Black Jesus” Facebook page published the above photo about half-an-hour ago, with the caption “Your prayers have been answered,” suggesting the obvious.
A year ago, Adult Swim did order a second season of its then new Aaron McGruder series, “Black Jesus,” but given how long it’s been since that announcement, many fans apparently wondered if it was indeed returning for a second season. And it looks like it will be, so you can rest easy now.
In season 1 (and I assume also in the upcoming season 2) McGruder’s live-action “Jesus” finds the son of God living in present day Compton, CA, on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood, with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers.
Newcomer Gerald “Slink” Johnson stars as “Black Jesus.”

This Is How You Beat Donald Trump
Republican strategist Liz Mair lists 10 ways to blow the billionaire out of the water.
For months now, consultants and pundits have been opining about what would be necessary to take The Donald down. We now have a glimpse into what Team Jeb will do—they released an ad this week pointing out Trump’s various flip-flops over the years—but obviously more will be needed.
But perhaps something much different than what Jeb has signaled will be his approach will also be required. There is no existing blueprint for how you kill off a candidate like this, so John Ellis and his staff are probably going to have to do a lot of experimentation to figure out what works, as will any other candidate who wants to help Trump toward what most assume will be his eventual demise.
Here, however, are a few options they might consider—and indeed probably are already considering, at least to some extent.
1. Focus on moving an anti-Trump message to where low-information voters actually get their information.
The reality, whether political campaign operatives like it or not, is that evangelical farmers in Iowa are not reading Politico. Rushed-off-their-feet moms-of-three in Laconia are not watching daytime cable news.
At best, they’re reading their local paper, watching their local evening or morning news, tuning into O’Reilly, and maybe checking a social network for information once or twice a day.
Moreover, despite the fact that they live in the first caucus and primary states, respectively, they—like most people—probably do not live and breathe politics, or even much like it. They’re probably more interested in human-interest stories, the weather, and perhaps sports.
They’re definitely laser-focused on their kids, their churches, their jobs, their communities, their friends. This is, incidentally, probably where they’re hearing about Trump, and where he can most effectively be countered.

Energy Secretary Sarah Palin?

Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has quite a bit of work to do before he has to worry about cabinet secretaries, but he already has some people in mind for his executive-branch team. In July, for example, Trump was asked whether he’d consider former half-term Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) for his cabinet.
“I’d love that,” he replied. “Because she really is somebody who knows what’s happening and she’s a special person.”
Evidently, the Alaska Republican already has a specific job in mind.
In a freewheeling and strangely self-defeating interview on Sunday, Sarah Palin rallied behind Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, promoting herself as Trump’s potential secretary of energy even as she pledged to abolish the department.
“I think a lot about the Department of Energy, because energy is my baby: oil and gas and minerals, those things that God has dumped on this part of the Earth for mankind’s use instead of us relying on unfriendly foreign nations,” she told CNN’s Jake Tapper in an interview that aired Sunday on “State of the Union.”
Palin added, in the same interview, “I think a lot about Department of Energy. And if I were head of that, I would get rid of it.”
In other words, Palin wants to be the Energy Secretary, so that she could play a direct role in eliminating the Department of Energy. She wants to get the job, in order to walk away from the job – which, if nothing else, would fit nicely into Palin’s career pattern. (The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza joked over the weekend, “Palin is the only politician who takes jobs strictly so she can resign from them.”)
But that’s not the funny part, at least not all of it, anyway. The broader problem is that Palin says she “thinks a lot about the Department of Energy,” but not quite enough to know what the Department of Energy actually does.
