Monday Open Thread | Viola Davis Makes History With Best Actress Win

Viola Davis Emmy AwardOn Sunday night, Viola Davis made history.

The “How to Get Away with Murder” star became the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

“Let me tell you something: the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity,” she said. “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

Davis, 50, opened the speech by quoting abolitionist Harriet Tubman.

“In my dreams and visions, I seemed to see a line, and on the other side of that line were green fields, and lovely flowers, and beautiful white ladies, who stretched out their arms to me over the line, but I couldn’t reach them no-how,” she said.

She then thanked “people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black,” before recognizing other actresses of color, including Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington and Gabrielle Union.

“Thank you for taking us over that line,” she told them.

VIOLA DAVIS’S EMMY WIN AND SPEECH WAS THE BLACKEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED THIS WEEK
    Damon Young, 9/21/15

How to Get Away with Murder is not a great show. It’s not a bad one, but the way it shifts from 40 minutes of “Eh, let me check and see what’s on the Travel Network tonight” to 20 seconds of “WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED???” every episode is so conspicuous that you consciously become aware how manipulative it is. Now, being manipulative isn’t a bad thing. All great shows do it to some extent, and we (the audience) expect and desire it. But with HTGAWM, the manipulations aren’t just foreshadowed or alluded to. They’re screamed at you. “OF COURSE IT MAKES NO SENSE FOR THAT GUY TO BE A MURDERER. BUT WE’RE MANIPULATING YOU RIGHT NOW, SO DEAL WITH IT.”

The show remains compelling, however, because Viola Davis’s Annalise Keating is unlike any character who’s ever existed on television. She frequently vacillates between scary and scared and laconic and lascivious and devout and devious and motherly and Lady MacBeth in the same episode. Sometimes in the same scene. There is no archetype for someone like her. Perhaps there will be, eventually, but it will be based on her. She is a wonder.

And she’s Black. But not the type of Black we’re conditioned to seeing and expecting on television. Especially not in this type of role. Let me put it this way: I’ve seen a lead character have her hair tended to by her mother. But I’ve never seen that happen when the lead character had the type of hair that made the same sound I heard as a kid when my mom was combing my sister’s hair.

I’m not a fan of David Cameron’s nor the gawdawful Tories, but this biography/tell-all by Lord Ashcroft is exactly why politics is a most dishonorable profession…

One ends up attracting all sorts of ‘supporters’, ‘backers’, ‘funders’, staff etc. who gain access into ones most private spaces – and in the end, could very well end up destroying – or at the very least, doing grievous damage to one and ones family – and only by virtue of their claim to having had access and therefore being seen as entirely unassailable witness and source…

    • eliihass says:

Now, that was a completely genuine and heartfelt moment…

I’m glad Viola won…she’s a fantastic actress and not a celebrity…She’s serious about her craft and not only studied at Juilliard, but has been hard at work for years, honing her skills with little recognition – and hardly any of the fluff celebrity perks enjoyed by those deemed more attractive, younger and more ‘mainstream’ – and aggressively marketed by high-priced PR teams…

Taraji will get hers next time…she’s a completely authentic, down to earth, and very talented actress —

Ben Carson Is the Most Extreme Candidate in the Race

His genial reputation conceals a deep commitment to paranoid politics, honed over years of conservative activism.

    By Jamelle Bouie

Ben Carson’s brand is “nice.” “Carson has the bedside manner of the physician he is,” says the Christian Science Monitor. “Ben Carson doesn’t shout,” writes Adam C. Smith for the Tampa Bay Times. “He doesn’t throw zingers, and he rarely disparages rival presidential candidates. In a period when Donald Trump’s bluster dominates the 2016 presidential race, Carson seldom says anything provocative enough to generate TV news coverage.

On Sunday, in an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, that changed. “Do you believe that Islam is consistent with the Constitution,” asked Chuck Todd, after Carson said a president’s faith only matters if it’s inconsistent with the country’s values. “No, I don’t, I do not,” answered Carson. He continued: “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.” The Council on American-Islamic Relations slammed the retired neurosurgeon, who with Donald Trump leads the Republican presidential pack. “Mr. Carson clearly does not understand or care about the Constitution, which states that ‘no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office,’ ” said the group’s national executive director in a statement.

    ……………………………

Pay Close Attention to What the Republican Candidates Are Saying About Abortion

    PAUL WALDMAN
    SEPTEMBER 20, 2015
How abortion became the dominant issue of Republican politics.

If a year ago you had tried to predict what issues would dominate the presidential primary campaign of 2016, there would have been a few obvious contenders. The economy, of course, which is a central issue in every campaign. Obamacare? Definitely. After making opposition to the Affordable Care Act the defining feature of contemporary Republicanism—they’ve voted to repeal it over 50 times, after all, which must be unprecedented in American history—how could they not spend their primary arguing about which of them loathes it the most? Then there’s immigration, an issue that both animates the GOP base and has been the subject of lots of contention between the president and the Congress. Terrorism would surely figure prominently, as the candidates would compete to show that they are toughest-talkin’ buckaroo in the bunch.

But abortion? You might not have thought so. It would, like usual, be a box that requires checking—I’m pro-life, I’ll appoint only judges who “respect the Constitution,” nudge-nudge wink-wink—but beyond that, what more is there for Republican candidates to say?

It turns out there’s quite a bit more. And though it sometimes seems like the country has been locked in the same place on this issue for the last four decades, anti-abortion activists are probably feeling like they’re finally getting the attention they’re due, for the first time in years. That’s because those activists have long believed that the GOP mistreats them, asking for their labors at election time and promising that abortion rights will be a memory once they take power, but then failing to deliver.

The top editor earns about $200,000, two other editors earn about $150,000 and $125,000, respectively, and a reporter earns about $90,000, according to The Seventy Four’s application to the Internal Revenue Service for tax-exempt status. Key Takeaways from New GAO Report on Income-Based Repayment
    By Jason Delisle

Yesterday, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report on borrower enrollment in income-based repayment plans for federal student loans. While some of the report’s findings are out of date (enrollment in the plans has grown 70 percent since the GAO conducted its analysis) the report sheds new light on these repayment plans.

Loan Balances in Public Service Loan Forgiveness are High

We’ve long argued that Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), the program that promises loan forgiveness after ten years of working for the government or a non-profit, mainly benefits students with graduate degrees because they have enough debt to accrue significant benefits — and they can borrow effectively unlimited sums to finance their educations. The GAO seems to bear this out when it says that 80 percent of those enrolled in PSLF borrowed more than $30,000.

But a closer look at the same chart suggests the PSLF story may be even bigger than we thought. The median amount that a PSLF enrollee borrowed is between $60,000 and $70,000. And a shocking 26 percent borrowed more than $100,000.

Jeb Bush should drop out for the good of the Republican Party
Updated by Matthew Yglesias on September 21, 2015, 5:22 p.m. ET

It would, of course, be totally ridiculous for Jeb Bush to drop out of the 2016 Republican primary this week. He’s got a ton of money in the bank, a ton more money in his super PAC’s bank, he’s ahead of all the real politicians in national primary polling, and he leads the field in endorsements. If he sticks it out, Donald Trump will probably fade. The Ben Carson boomlet will probably vanish. The nascent Carly Fiorina boomlet will keep going for a while and then she’ll come back down to earth too. Bush has the cash to gut it out and try to prevail against all comers and the odds of it working are at least decent.

But if he cares about his family legacy, the good of the Republican Party and the ideological principles he espouses, he should drop out as soon as possible and endorse Marco Rubio.

Conservatives hate Catholics and threaten to assassinate Pope Francis

Since Pope Francis’ elevation to the Papacy, the White Power Right-Wingers in America and their Party, the Republicans, have been gnashing their teeth and getting angrier and angrier at Il Papa. Now, on the eve of his visit, Conservatives are threatening to assassinate the Pope.

Conservatives have historically always hated Catholicism. But, in the 1980’s Reagan, Thatcher and John Paul II made common cause and hard right-wing views inflitrated and corrupted the Church. Any American Catholic not accepting the vicious right-wing Agenda was a “cafeteria catholic” and a traitor to the faith.

Today, Pope Francis is reversing that trend, pointing out the Church should be helping the poor, speaking out against runaway Income Inequality and Vulture Capitalism, while addressing Climate Change. Pope Francis has also relaxed rules on women receiving absolution for abortions and to ease restrictions on Marriage Annulments.

These changes do not sit well in Right-Wing America. Conservatives love Cut-Throat Capitalism, hate the poor, want Women punished, and are reflexively against addressing Climate Change because Liberals are for it. All of these things hurt people and Conservatives love to hurt people.

But, as with the Rise of Trump, the White Power Right-Wingers are feeling more and more comfortable with demanding their Republican Party, begin to follow through and deliever the U.S. Government back into the hands of the White Supremacists, which has been one of the carrots Republicans have dangled in order to secure the bigot vote.

Sarah Palin complaining that the Pope sounds “too liberal” and the Republicans in Congress pulling a ceremonial bill congratulating the Pope on his elevation to Saint Peter’s Chair weren’t enough.

Pope, China leader visits test Obama’s social secretary
    By DARLENE SUPERVILLE
    Sep. 20, 2015 9:05 AM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The diplomatic double whammy of back-to-back visits by Pope Francis and Chinese President Xi Jinping is creating some pressure-filled days for Deesha Dyer, five months into her tenure as White House social secretary.

No wonder a scented candle is among the half-dozen “must-have” items she keeps in her small office.

“It provides a calm, peaceful atmosphere, which is important in this job,” Dyer said.

Dyer has worked at the White House since 2009, starting as an intern and rising to deputy social secretary before Obama and his wife, Michelle, moved her into the top job in April. The Philadelphia native has overseen the planning and execution of scores of events since then, though none as important politically or on as grand a scale as the Francis and Xi visits.

On Wednesday, Francis will become just the third pope to visit the White House, one stop on his first U.S. trip.

Xi arrives two days later on a lavish state visit, putting Obama in the awkward position of toasting the head of a country he blames for certain unacceptable practices, including cyberattacks against U.S. government and corporate computer systems. China is the only country whose leader Obama has invited for a repeat state visit.

That fact alone has Dyer and her six-person team searching for answers to a basic question: How to make next Friday’s dinner better than the one in 2011, for then-President Hu Jintao?

And we’re now quoting Desiree Rogers..? After she spent all these years disrespecting the First Lady and insisting that she did the Obamas the favor – all while distancing herself and simultaneously boasting of how she’d ‘moved on’ to more important ‘corporate’ endeavors, and no longer wished to have anything to do with them except of course always stressing her ‘successful’ stint as Social Secretary to the *President* – forgetting that it is the First Lady to whom that position reports…And all previous Social Secretaries before her, spoke of and still speak of their respective First Ladies as their boss..

Now that she’s done destroying Ebony, she’s looking to worm her way back into taking credit and positioning herself as relevant, and an important source/go to person for White House Social Secretary and other ‘insider’ related-matters…

    Awesomely Luvvie — September 21, 2015

I (and countless others) have spent years complaining about the monochrome Emmy Awards (read: my post on 2013 Emmy Awards Embodied TV’s White Problem). It is usually a show that is white people giving other white people every award, and the audience is sprinkled with a few Black and brown faces to keep everyone patting their own backs. Not this year. Well, it’s still a big white scoop with colored sprinkles, except the Black sprinkles walked on stage and got the props they deserve. It was the Blackest Emmy Awards I’ve ever seen, and this is why I have hollered myself hoarse.

My throat is hurting for spending much of the evening screaming like a banshee. Three Black women whose work I LOVE walked away with awards, and I cannot stop being geeked about it. The big winners of the night were: Veep, Game of Thrones and Black women.

    ……………………

    Put a Fork in Him
    ByJOSH MARSHALL
    Published SEPTEMBER 21, 2015, 10:16 AM EDT

Jeb Bush says a new TV ad attacking his brother, put together by an outside Democratic group, is “disgraceful.” This comes after Jeb himself put out a meme after last week’s debate embracing his “he kept us” safe line from his exchange with celebrity businessman Donald Trump. It’s hard to see what exactly is “disgraceful” about criticizing the record of a former president just because he happens to be another candidate’s brother. Indeed, as Amanda Marcotte notes here, the “he kept us safe” line is problematic on the merits, unless you consider the catastrophic 9/11 attacks the world’s most epic presidential mulligan. Even post-9/11, which of course is what the defenders want to focus on, getting the country embroiled in the catastrophic and terrorism irrelevant Iraq War doesn’t look like such a great idea in retrospect either.

But for the purposes of 2016, I’d argue that all these substantive points are borderline irrelevant.

As I noted in yesterday’s post, Jeb Bush has a respectable presidential resume, vast sums of campaign money and at least some remaining powerbase in the critical state of Florida. Basically the one, single and only thing that he needed to focus on in this campaign was banking all the money and establishment support that went with his name while basically never mentioning his father and brother and finding a way to convince people he was, as he put it once, “his own man” rather than the warmed over ‘younger brother’ who now, painfully, happens to be almost exactly the same age his dad was when he ran for President in 1988. (Yes, Bush would be just a few days shy of 64 if he was sworn in in January 2017. His dad was 64.)

    …………………………………

The Americans United for Change’s ad, which Jeb calls “disgraceful” is a rather transparent and, it would seem, extremely effective effort to pull Jeb into focusing even more of his campaign on talking about his brother and his generally discredited foreign policy.

And of course, Jeb’s falling for it totally.

Caught in a fib, Fiorina refuses to acknowledge misstep
    09/21/15 10:00 AM—UPDATED 09/21/15 11:02 AM
    By Steve Benen
At last week’s Republican debate, Carly Fiorina described a Planned Parenthood video showing “a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says, ‘We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.’”

There is no such video. It does not exist. This pesky detail has since touched off a striking series of events.

First, the GOP candidate insisted the day after the debate that she “didn’t misspeak,” adding, “I have seen those images.” Of course, Fiorina couldn’t have seen those images, because there are no such images.

Later, Vox’s Sarah Kliff asked the Fiorina campaign to back up her claim with evidence. The Republican staffers tried, but failed, to substantiate the claims. Even the right-wing group that released the videos can’t bolster the Republican presidential hopeful.

Yesterday, Fiorina appeared on “Fox News Sunday,” where host Chris Wallace tried to lead Fiorina to acknowledge reality. From the Nexis transcript:
WALLACE: First of all, do you acknowledge what every fact checker has found, that as horrific as that scene is, it was only described on the video by someone who claimed to have seen it? There is no actual footage of the incident that you just mentioned?

FIORINA: No, I don’t accept that at all. I’ve seen the footage. And I find it amazing, actually, that all these supposed fact-checkers in the mainstream media claim this doesn’t exist. They’re trying to attack the authenticity of the videotape.
Actually, they’re not. The fact-checkers examined Fiorina’s claim and concluded that it’s the opposite of reality. Offered multiple opportunities to substantiate the claim with evidence, Fiorina and her aides have offered nothing. The authenticity of the tapes is a separate question altogether.

The more the Republican says, “I’ve seen the footage,” the more we’re reminded there is no such footage.

Carson backs religious test for presidency, despite Constitution
    09/21/15 08:40 AM
    By Steve Benen
Article VI of the U.S. Constitution is unambiguously clear: “[N]o religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

As of yesterday, Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson either doesn’t know what the Constitution says or he simply doesn’t care.
Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson said he would not support a Muslim as President of the United States. Responding to a question on “Meet the Press,” the retired neurosurgeon said, “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.”

He also said that Islam, as a religion, is incompatible with the Constitution.
It was a bizarre exchange to watch. “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd asked Carson, currently a top-tier GOP contender, if a president’s faith matters. “Well, I guess it depends on what that faith is,” he replied. “If it’s inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the Constitution, no problem.”

Following up, Todd asked, “So do you believe that Islam is consistent with the Constitution?” Carson replied, “No, I don’t, I do not…. I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation.”

AUSTIN – Less than a year after being elected to lead the oldest state agency in Texas, Land Commissioner George P. Bush has dramatically remade the General Land Office by ousting a majority of its longtime leaders and replacing many of them with people with ties to his campaign and family.

And Even Republicans Are Acting Surprised
      September 20, 2015
      By: Juanita Jean
The big news in Texas right now is that George P Bush, son of a JebBush, got elected Land Commissioner in Texas and is violating the law, hiring his friends and family, not posting jobs, and has turned the Texas General Land office to a frat house / political payoff machine that even has his retired Republican predecessor aghast.

Bush.George P. He’s a damn Bush, people. What the hell did you expect?

If you didn’t want someone acting like a damn Bush, why the fool tarnation did you elect a damn Bush

        Good ole nepotism & cronyism

<b.Nepotism is favoritism granted to relatives

Cronyism is partiality to long-standing friends, especially by appointing them to positions of authority, regardless of their qualifications. Hence, cronyism is contrary in practice and principle to meritocracy.

Obama’s citizenship push stokes conservative fears

The administration is accelerating naturalization for millions of legal residents — many of whom will probably vote Democratic.
    By Sarah Wheaton

    .
The Obama administration and its allies are holding scores of events this week as part of a sweeping new initiative to nudge 8.8 million legal residents who are eligible for naturalization to become full-fledged citizens — and therefore, eligible to vote.

The not-so-secret expectation is that most of them would probably register as Democrats, given the demographics heavy on Hispanics and Asians — a fact that has not been lost on many conservatives.

“We’re getting lower-income people who are coming in and taking more services, and they’re drawn to the Democrats,” said Ed Martin, president of the right-wing Eagle Forum, which raised the alarm last year in a report titled “How Mass (Legal) Immigration Dooms a Conservative Republican Party.” “That’s what Obama knows, and that’s what the Democrats know, and that’s what Republicans should know and should be fighting back against it,” Martin said.

‘I didn’t know my dad’: Obama gets personal in prison chat with inmates
    42 minutes ago

An exclusive look on TODAY Monday of President Barack Obama’s historic visit to a federal prison as part of an HBO Special by VICE News gives a glimpse into his empathy for non-violent offenders.

“I guess the honesty was what shook me the most, about how he opened up and said, ‘Yes, I’ve done drugs and there but for the grace of God go I, and I didn’t know my dad,” VICE co-founder and CEO Shane Smith told Savannah Guthrie and Willie Geist.

“That’s pretty unique especially as this presidential race is going on to have a sitting president go there and explain why he had empathy for these prisoners.”

Trump’s polls have only gone in one direction – until now
    09/21/15 08:00 AM
    By Steve Benen
For much of the summer, the polls in the Republican presidential race have moved in one direction: Donald Trump building on his previous leads, gathering additional support from GOP voters.

But as every financial-firm commercial is required to tell you, past performance is not indicative of future results. MSNBC’s Benjy Sarlin reported yesterday on an interesting new CNN poll.
The first major national poll since the second GOP debate finds Carly Fiorina surging into a second place and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s campaign in total collapse.

The survey by CNN of 444 registered Republican voters put Donald Trump in first place with 24% support, a drop of 8 points since their last poll, and Fiorina in second place with 15%. Fiorina earned plaudits on the right for her debate performance, which included multiple clashes with Trump, although fact checkers pointed out that she vividly cited footage from a hidden camera video of Planned Parenthood that does not appear to exist.
    Here’s the latest rundown:

    1. Donald Trump: 24% (down eight points from early September)
    2. Carly Fiorina: 15% (up 12 points)
    3. Ben Carson: 14% (down five points)
    4. Marco Rubio: 11% (up eight points)
    5. Jeb Bush: 9% (unchanged)
    6. Ted Cruz: 6% (down one point)
    6. Mike Huckabee: 6% (up one point)
    8. Rand Paul: 4% (up one point)
    9. Chris Christie: 3% (up one point)
    10. John Kasich: 2% (unchanged)
