Carol Marin: A betrayal of trust in McDonald, Koschman cases

    WRITTEN BY CAROL MARIN

    POSTED: 11/20/2015, 06:41PM

“At every stage, the instinct of the culture is to circle the wagons and enforce a false narrative.”

—Freelance journalist Jamie Kalven, who broke the Laquan McDonald story

    Crime is bad enough.

A code of silence is worse.

It continues to be true in the case of David Koschman. I’ll get to that in a moment.

And it’s true in the case of Laquan McDonald, who was shot 16 times by one Chicago police officer in October 2014 as other officers who chose restraint looked on.

Now, by virtue of an order by Cook County Judge Franklin Valderrama, video of the McDonald shooting must be released so the public can see what neither Mayor Emanuel nor CPD has wanted us to see for 13 months.

    ……………..

But it took until five days after Emanuel’s April election victory for the City Council to learn about the incident, when it was asked to give the McDonald family $5 million without the family ever filing a lawsuit

Feds charge worker of Cook County Court Clerk Dorothy Brown

WRITTEN BY CHRIS FUSCO, ROBERT HERGUTH AND PATRICK REHKAMP POSTED: 11/20/2015, 01:31

A lower-level employee of Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown has been charged with lying to a federal grand jury “investigating the purchasing of jobs and promotions” in the clerk’s office — including a lie about whether he had spoken to Brown after he was rehired.

Sivasubramani Rajaram, 48, of Glenview, was rehired by Brown after he allegedly loaned $15,000 to Goat Masters Corporation, a company whose president was Brown’s husband, Benton Cook III, according to the indictment. Rajaram was charged with one count of making false declarations before a grand jury, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Brown and Cook have not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing, though the FBI last month seized Brown’s county-issued cellphone as part of the investigation. Shortly after that, the Better Government Association, Chicago Sun-Times and FOX Chicago TV revealed that Goat Masters was listed on federal subpoenas involving the circuit clerk’s office.

Man arrested after refusing to leave Mosque, disrespecting property at Islamic Center of S.A.

Texas man arrested at mosque after wiping boots on prayer rugs and cursing worshipers
    Update: 20 NOV 2015 AT 10:12 ET

A Texas man was arrested earlier this week after walking into a mosque and wiping his feet on the carpet while screaming obscenities at worshipers.

Witnesses said Mariano Talavera wore military-style clothes and carried an American flag and a large backpack Tuesday afternoon into the Islamic Center of San Antonio, where he then started rubbing his boots on prayer mats, reported KENS-TV.

Worshipers asked Talavera to remove his boots out of respect, but he instead walked into the nearby women’s prayer room — dragging his feet with every step and screaming obscenities about the Islamic religion.

Muslims typically remove their shoes before praying to avoid tracking dirt from outside into the sanctuary’s symbolically clean space, and visitors are also asked to do so before entering mosques.

Witnesses called police, who arrived and asked Talavera what business he had at the mosque.

Talavera claimed he was there to worship, but officers were skeptical and arrested him on criminal trespassing charges.

Police seized his backpack, but they haven’t said what he was carrying inside it.

Support pours in for fired E. Greenbush Walmart employee who redeemed $5.10 of cans
    November 19, 2015

A Times Union story about a Walmart employee fired from his job for redeeming $5.10 worth of empty cans and bottles he found discarded in the parking lot sparked widespread outrage and is gaining traction nationally via social media.

Local readers wrote and called the Times Union to express their anger at Walmart and vowed to boycott the store and to send the fired worker donations. An Altamont woman fired off a letter of indignation to C. Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart.

This groundswell of civic action was touched off by a Times Union story Thursday about Smith, 52, who liked his job gathering shopping carts from the vast parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter here, where customers often left trash and empty drink containers.

Smith picked up the garbage for more than two months until Nov. 6, when he was fired for redeeming $5.10 worth of empty cans and bottles he found discarded on two occasions.

He was called into the security office and interrogated by a manager and two security staff members.

“I didn’t know you couldn’t take empties left behind. They were garbage,” Smith said. “I didn’t even get a chance to explain myself. They told me to turn in my badge.”
    […]
Smith was fired from his $9-an-hour job a few weeks before his 90-day probationary period was up, denying him a 10 percent employee discount and other benefits.

Smith, who is African-American, contacted prisoner advocate Alice Green at the Center for Law and Justice in Albany. She took up Smith’s cause after hearing his account that alleged racial discrimination. During his interrogation, the manager told Smith that a store cashier, who is white, was caught on camera stealing $20 from a cash register and stuffing it into her bra. The cashier paid the money back and was not terminated because she has five kids.
“It raised issues of race and gender,” Green said.

Jared Fogle, ex-Subway spokesman, gets 15 years in prison for child porn, sex crimes

Former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle was sentenced Thursday to more than 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to federal charges related to child pornography and sexual conduct involving minors.

Fogle faced two counts: traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor, and distribution and receipt of child pornography.

“How do you plead to the charges?” U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt asked Fogle on Thursday at the federal courthouse in Indianapolis, according to the Indianapolis Star.

    “Guilty,” Fogle replied.

SHORT: LATINOS DO NOT VOTE FOR RACISTS

  12. rikyrah says:

Donald Trump gets called out big time at Latin Grammys

No one had more fun than Will Smith rapping (in Spanish!) at the Latin Grammy Awards on Thursday night.

But the performance Twitter can’t stop buzzing about belonged to California band Los Tigres Del Norte and Mexican rockers Maná, who got together and sang Somos Más Americanos. At the end of the performance, they held up a sign reading, “Latinos unidos no voten por los racistas,” which translates to: “United Latinos, don’t vote for racists.”

Of course, folks at home were quick to draw parallels to a certain 2016 candidate, Donald Trump, who in the past has called immigrants from Mexico drug-dealers, criminals and “rapists,” and called for a mass deportation of those living in the United States.

    on the efficacy of fear
    By Liberal Librarian

I was going to write this essay earlier this month, probably after a GOP debate. But, life intervened, and I set it aside.

I certainly wasn’t expecting the Paris attacks. But I should have expected the reaction among most everyone on the Right.

While Parisians are crowding outdoor cafes and continuing with their lives as a raised fist against the fear which Daesh wants them to live under, conservatives in this country are running around flinging fearful fecal matter in every direction, warning that Daesh is under your bed, or that the orphaned refugee could be a sleeper agent ready to detonate a bomb at your nearest NFL stadium.

However, I’m not going to say that this is against American tradition. The fact is that the United States has always had a very vibrant Party of Fear.

This, in many ways, is to be expected. A country founded on the expropriation of the native population and the enslavement of another population will always have a healthy fear that what it stole will in turn be stolen. Thieves are the most paranoid of people.

First it was the Irish Catholics. Then it was the southern Europeans. Then the eastern European Jews. During all this, of course, the Yellow Peril was always good for a strong dose of fear. Then the various Red Scares (1920s and 1950s). The US has never had a dearth of people to fear. It can be quite accurately stated that fear is the motive force of this country.

So when my well-meaning liberal friends say that the scapegoating of Syrian refugees fleeing the same violence visited upon Paris is “not who we are”, I sadly have to say that history tells a different story. The meme going around Twitter is the fact that in 1939 a healthy majority of Americans were against resettling Jews fleeing Nazi Germany in the US. And, of course, a few years later, American citizens of Japanese descent were rounded up into concentration camps for the duration of World War II. Fear is an old friend of the Republic.

That doesn’t mean it needs to continue to be so. That doesn’t mean we have to be slaves to our history.

The wonderful thing about humans is that, given the right conditions, they can evolve. They can become better. They can become more than who they were. Just anecdotally, I see this in my own life. I don’t hold myself up as a paragon of virtue. But I can see that I’m a better person now than I was in my youth, that I’ve grown and I’ve expanded my circle of concern. Every human has this potential within herself.

The problem is that fear is strong. To quote the poet: “Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.” Fear speaks to our basest, most unevolved instincts. It speaks to our reptile brain, the foundation of our evolution. Flee or fight. Sometimes both. Fear is the “natural” reaction.

Kentucky voters create ‘a big problem’ for themselves
    11/19/15 11:21 AM—UPDATED 11/19/15 01:39 PM
    By Steve Benen
We talked last week about a middle-aged Kentucky man who relies heavily on Medicaid expansion through the Affordable Care Act, but nevertheless voted for Gov.-elect Matt Bevin (R), who ran on a platform of destroying Medicaid expansion.

“[I]t doesn’t look to me as if [Bevin] understands,” the man said, struggling with the consequences of his own vote. “Without this little bit of help these people are giving me, I could probably die.” It’s a problem that apparently didn’t occur to him until after he backed the far-right candidate.

And he’s not alone. The Lexington Herald-Leader reported today on Owsley County, Kentucky, where most local residents receive health coverage through Medicaid, but where most local residents also voted for the anti-Medicaid candidate.
Lisa Botner, 36, belongs to both camps. A Kynector – a state agent representing Kynect in the field – recently helped Botner sign up for a Wellcare Medicaid card for herself and her 7-year-old son. Without that, Botner said, she couldn’t afford the regular doctor’s visits and blood tests needed to keep her hyperthyroidism in check.

“If anything changed with our insurance to make it more expensive for us, that would be a big problem,” Botner, a community college student, said Friday at the Owsley County Public Library, where she works. “Just with the blood tests, you’re talking maybe $1,000 a year without insurance.”
So why in the world would she support Bevin and vote to undermine her own interests? “I’m just a die-hard Republican,” the woman said.

The Herald-Leader article quoted a political scientist who crunched the numbers and found that the Kentucky counties most reliant on Medicaid expansion were also the most likely to vote for the candidate who vowed to tear down Medicaid expansion.

Donald Trump’s Plan for a Muslim Database Draws Comparison to Nazi Germany
    by VAUGHN HILLYARD

NEWTON, Iowa — Donald Trump “would certainly implement” a database system tracking Muslims in the United States, the Republican front-runner told NBC News on Thursday night.

“I would certainly implement that. Absolutely,” Trump said in Newton, Iowa, in between campaign town halls.

“There should be a lot of systems, beyond databases,” he added. “We should have a lot of systems.”

When asked whether Muslims would be legally obligated to sign into the database, Trump responded, “They have to be — they have to be.”

    …………………..

Rabbi Jack Moline, executive director of the nonprofit Interfaith Alliance, drew the same comparison Thursday night.

“My father was in World War II, and he fought to preserve America against what the Nazis were doing,” Moline told NBC News.

“This is exactly why there is an America, to not be like that,” he said.

Trump was repeatedly asked to explain how his idea was different. Four times, he responded: “You tell me.”
