Goldwater girlA 1996 NPR interview with Hillary Clinton has recently resurfaced, in which the current Democratic front-runner shockingly embraced conservatism and reiterated how proud she was to support a segregationist presidential candidate.

In the interview, Clinton told NPR’s Scott Simon that her political beliefs were “rooted in the conservatism that I was raised with,” and talked about being a “Goldwater girl” in 1964:

SCOTT SIMON: I mean, did you ever back in the ’60s, between when — I believe you were a Goldwater girl —

HILLARY CLINTON: That’s right.

SCOTT SIMON: — and whenever you became politically –

HILLARY CLINTON: That’s right. And I feel like my political beliefs are rooted in the conservatism that I was raised with. I don’t recognize this new brand of Republicanism that is afoot now, which I consider to be very reactionary, not conservative in many respects. I am very proud that I was a Goldwater girl.

In 1964, when Clinton was 18, she worked on Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign. Goldwater was running for president during the same year that the Civil Rights Act was passed, and advocated repealing the landmark legislation ensconcing the right of people of color, women, religious minorities, and other groups to be free from discrimination.

Promotion of segregation was a platform Goldwater defended all the way to the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco, in which he famously said, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.” In that same speech, Goldwater also said “Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue,” which, ironically, could also be a criticism of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign:

While it’s important to note that Hillary Clinton’s interview with Scott Simon took place in 1996, the fact that she embraced conservative principles and expressed pride at having worked on the Goldwater campaign is a direct contradiction with her 2016 campaign. Clinton has struggled to identify herself as a “progressive who likes to get things done,” which opened her up to criticism from democratic socialist Bernie Sanders.

    Nine-year-old Edmund Lee is a great student. He’s a third-grader at Gateway Science Academy, a charter school in south St. Louis. He’s been a student there since kindergarten, and he wants to stay there, but an archaic law on the city’s books won’t allow him to attend the school anymore because he’s black.

    Everything was fine as long as Edmund and his family lived in the city of St. Louis. But their recent move to the suburbs means that Edmund can’t attend his old school. Because of the way that St. Louis’ laws are written, suburban kids cannot attend city schools if they are black.

    “When I read the guidelines, I was in shock,” Edmund’s mother, La’Shieka White, told Fox 2 Now. “I was crying.”

    The law was passed decades ago and was meant to address school segregation.

    School officials told the news station that because it’s the law, their hands are tied, but they welcome revisiting the rules.

    White has launched a petition, asking lawmakers to take notice of her situation, adding that this isn’t just about her son, since she has heard from white students’ parents who were also unable to transfer to the school of their choice.

    The scenario Karl Rove outlined was bleak.

    Addressing a luncheon of Republican governors and donors in Washington on Feb. 19, he warned that Donald J. Trump’s increasingly likely nomination would be catastrophic, dooming the party in November. But Mr. Rove, the master strategist of George W. Bush’s campaigns, insisted it was not too late for them to stop Mr. Trump, according to three people present.

    At a meeting of Republican governors the next morning, Paul R. LePage of Maine called for action. Seated at a long boardroom table at the Willard Hotel, he erupted in frustration over the state of the 2016 race, saying Mr. Trump’s nomination would deeply wound the Republican Party. Mr. LePage urged the governors to draft an open letter “to the people,” disavowing Mr. Trump and his divisive brand of politics.

    The suggestion was not taken up. Since then, Mr. Trump has only gotten stronger, winning two more state contests and collecting the endorsement of Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey

    For decades, the “Get Out the Vote” campaigns and voter registration drives have been driven by liberals. The logic is this: the bulk of unregistered voters in the United States have Democratic leanings. The more people who are registered and the more people who vote increases the likelihood that Democratic candidates will win.

    College campuses and youth events are gold mines for unregistered voters. In previous presidential elections, you couldn’t step foot on a college campus or go to a concert in the country without being hounded to register.

    Hillary Clinton is clearly the establishment candidate for the Democratic Party. Not one U.S. Senator has endorsed Bernie Sanders. Only two other congresspeople have endorsed Bernie — the rest have all broken for Hillary. Almost all of the mayors and state senators from the Democratic party have also endorsed Hillary Clinton.

    As much as establishment politicians have broken for Hillary, young people under the age of 35 have broken for Bernie Sanders. Without fail, in each primary so far, in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada, young people under the age of 35 have voted for Bernie by a margin of 85% to 15%. It’s not even close.

    Consequently, party leaders (again, that’s code for Hillary supporters) have seemingly hosted fewer voter registration drives. Doing so, would, in essence, be drives for Bernie Sanders. In some cases, party leaders are just skipping them altogether in many states and at college campuses.

    When the Democratic Party loses interest in voter registration and voter empowerment, it is truly blurring the lines between what makes it fundamentally different than the Republican Party.

    In all four states where Republicans have voted, they have broken the all-time records for voter turnout for each and every state. On the flip side, turnout for Democrats is down 28% in Iowa, 13% in New Hampshire, and an astounding 33% in Nevada.

    But here’s the thing: Hillary must know that low voter turnout actually favors her campaign to get the nomination. She and the political machine are not going to invest the time or money to beat the drums for voter registration because they know full well those are primarily votes she won’t receive.

    Democrats should remember that just a few registered voters — even as few as 537 — could affect the outcome of a presidential election.

    While Bernie Sanders is officially running as a Democrat, he is truly doing so in name only. He has none of the well-tuned party mechanisms in place that could register millions of new voters and doesn’t have any of the local politicians who would typically get behind such a thing on his side. They are all stumping for Hillary.

    It all feels mighty conservative to me. In Florida, a staggering 23.3% of black Americans are fully banned from voting because of prior felonies. Since Florida effectively has a lifetime ban on felon voting rights — and rarely grants exceptions — we have something that deeply resembles Jim Crow in that state.

    Because the state has a Republican governor, though, he is not all incentivized to restore those voting rights to black felons because it could very well cost him and future conservative candidates their position in the government. Some 500,000 free black men in Florida are banned from voting. Conservative Gov. Rick Scott won his last election by fewer than 65,000 votes. Al Gore “lost” Florida by 537 votes.

    So, as it seems like conservative lawmakers are playing politics with the constitutional rights of their citizens, Hillary Clinton and the Democratic party aren’t far behind as they suddenly seem to lose interest in voter registration in the name of winning elections.

    It’s ugly, but this is game of American politics.

    SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – A long-standing and unconventional African American church in what was once the heart of San Francisco’s thriving black population is just days from eviction, marking the latest example of the region’s ongoing renting crisis and the city’s decades-long black exodus.

    The St. John Coltrane African Orthodox Church faces eviction next week from its home in the Fillmore District, a neighborhood best known for its jazz roots that in its heyday was dubbed “the Harlem of the West.”

    “It’s the most urgent example of the push-out of the African American population right now during our housing crisis and our affordability crisis,” said San Francisco Supervisor Eric Mar, who is advocating for the church in its eviction fight.

    The church, founded by Archbishop Franzo King and his wife Reverend Marina King in 1971, is well known throughout the city as a place where worshippers play instruments and sing along as well as a leader in social justice movements for decades.

    The Kings were inspired after watching the legendary jazz musician John Coltrane perform. The church, effectively a one-room storefront, is adorned with paintings of Coltrane as well as images in which Jesus and Mary are black.

    She was a conservative back then, and she still is today. It’s funny she and Bernie Sanders are both of the same generation, but we see one being arrested protesting the treatment of Blacks and the other campaigning for an arch segregationist. Blacks had better take a good look at the record of Hillary and Bill Clinton. Because if she gets in, I fear that it will be curtain time for Blacks. She looked at Libya and saw how well that country was doing under Gaddafy and bombed it the same way Black Wall Street was bombed when it was seen how well Little Africa was doing under Blacks. In the words of the great Amos Wilson, “Blacks owe no one anything, but a good a** beating.” Whites have always come in sheep’s clothing, smiling and grinning, pretending to be your friend.
