Happy Monday, Everyone. This week’s featured Artists, Steely Dan.

WIKI:  Steely Dan is an American jazz rock band whose music also blends elements of funk, R&B, and pop.Founded by core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in 1972, the band enjoyed great critical and commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980s before breaking up in 1981. Rolling Stone has called them “the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies”. Steely Dan reunited in 1993 and has toured steadily ever since.

Recorded with a revolving cast of session musicians, Steely Dan’s music is characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies. Becker and Fagen are whimsical, often sarcastic lyricists, having written “cerebral, wry and eccentric” songs about drugs, love affairs, gambling, and crime.The pair is also known for their near-obsessive perfectionism in the recording studio: Over the year they took to record Gaucho (1980), an album of just seven songs, Becker and Fagen hired at least 42 studio musicians and 11 engineers.

Steely Dan toured from 1972 to 1974 before retiring from live performances, becoming a studio-only band. After the group disbanded in 1981, Becker and Fagen were less active throughout most of the next decade, though a cult following remained devoted to the group. Since reuniting in 1993 Steely Dan has released two albums of new material, the first of which, Two Against Nature, earned a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. They have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2001.

In a VH1 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, Steely Dan were listed at #82.

        White women were complicit in slavery, lynchings, and segregation. Even when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s I saw that complicity among all the adults. No one spoke up.

    I have to admit – I don’t understand the Tiny House thing.

    I don’t understand it for one person. I definitely can’t comprehend it for more than one person, or a couple with a child or with a pet. I didn’t think I was claustrophobic, but maybe I am. Because, I can’t understand how this could possibly work – ever.

      It is the housing equivalent of telling poor people that money can’t buy happiness, the good things in life are free, blah blah blah. They are hawking the idea that you can live in a cell and find true happiness doing other things. Anyone who falls for this is a damn fool. People need space. People who can afford a comfortable home usually buy one. A smaller, easy to maintain home is one thing. Not everyone needs or wants a McMansion. But incarcerating yourself in a tiny cell is something else entirely.

    Meet the First Black Valedictorian at the World’s First School of Dentistry

    Established in 1840 as the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the University of Maryland School of Dentistry is known as the first dental college in the world. This past week, the school again made history when it graduated the first black valedictorian in its 176-year existence.

    As graduation approached, Tera Poole knew she was among the top five students in her class, but she didn’t know where exactly she ranked. When she opened up the graduation program, Poole saw her name at the top as the class valedictorian. She didn’t have much time to celebrate, however: The young dental student from Ohio gave the commencement speech shortly thereafter.

    “Everything, even being valedictorian was a surprise to me,” Poole said in an interview.

    Andrea Morgan, a recruitment coordinator at the University of Maryland’s School of Dentistry, was pleased to deliver the good news to Poole, but recalled the sobering history of the dental school.

    “The sad part is that the first African-American person didn’t graduate from our dental school until 1972,” Morgan said in a phone interview. “It took from 1840 to 1968 for a black person to come and graduate. That’s my lifetime.”

    If you’ve never seen it, you should watch the PBS Series: The Bletchley Circle. It was terrific. Last I saw it, you could get it on Netflix.

    Surprise, Surprise. Trump’s Been Lying About His Opposition To Cutting Social Security

    It should come as a shock to no one that Trump’s been saying one thing to his supporters on the campaign trail, while telling the Zombie-Eyed Granny-Starver from Wisconsin something else in private.

    It seems someone who doesn’t care for Trump was leaking like a sieve following his meeting earlier this month with House Speaker Paul Ryan: Trump Supports Cutting Social Security From A ‘Moral Standpoint:’ Report:

    Donald Trump supposedly told House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) he supports cutting Social Security but will not admit it publicly because it would hurt his election chances, according to a report in Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

    The presumptive Republican presidential nominee reportedly made the comments during a May 12 meeting with Ryan aimed at mending ties between the two top Republican leaders, Bloomberg reported, citing an unnamed source who was in the room. (Ryan has yet to endorse Trump.)

    “From a moral standpoint, I believe in it,” Trump said of cutting Social Security. “But you also have to get elected. And there’s no way a Republican is going to beat a Democrat when the Republican is saying, ‘We’re going to cut your Social Security’ and the Democrat is saying, ‘We’re going to keep it and give you more.’ ”

    Trump’s professed opposition to cutting Social Security and Medicare has been both a hallmark of his campaign and one of his greatest departures from traditional conservative ideology. And Ryan, who repeatedly criticized Trump before the mogul effectively secured the GOP nomination, has made proposing dramatic reductions in the popular social insurance programs a defining feature of his congressional career.

    Many conservative House Republicans told The Huffington Post shortly after the May 12 meeting that that they were unconcerned about Trump’s public posture on the programs. Several members interpreted him as wanting to extend the solvency of Social Security and Medicare solvency through some combination of the benefit cuts and other reforms that conservatives favor.

    Trump policy advisor Sam Clovis had already appeared to reverse course on May 11, indicating that Trump would be willing to consider cuts as president.
