Former Fox News Booker Says She Was Sexually Harassed and ‘Psychologically Tortured’ by Roger Ailes for More Than 20 Years
By Gabriel Sherman
The morning after Fox News chief Roger Ailes resigned, the cable network’s former director of booking placed a call to the New York law firm hired by 21st Century Fox to investigate sexual-harassment allegations against Ailes. Laurie Luhn told the lawyers at Paul, Weiss that she had been harassed by Ailes for more than 20 years, that executives at Fox News had known about it and helped cover it up, and that it had ruined her life. “It was psychological torture,” she later told me.
So far, most of the women who have spoken publicly about harassment by Ailes in the wake of Gretchen Carlson’s lawsuit had said no to Ailes’s sexual advances. They ran out of hotel rooms, they pulled away from embraces, they complained or avoided or generally resisted, even when it hurt their careers. This is the account of a woman who chose to go along with what Roger Ailes wanted — because he was powerful, because she thought he could help her advance her career, because she was professionally adrift and emotionally unmoored.

Appeals court strikes down North Carolina’s voter ID law
A federal appeals court on Friday struck down North Carolina’s requirement that voters show identification before casting ballots and reinstated an additional week of early voting.
The unanimous decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit was an overwhelming victory for civil rights groups and the Justice Department that argued the voting law was designed to dampen the growing political clout of African American voters, who participated in record numbers in elections in 2008 and 2012.
“We can only conclude that the North Carolina General Assembly enacted the challenged provisions of the law with discriminatory intent,” Judge Diana Gribbon Motz wrote for the majority.

The Convention Showed Confident Democrats and Progressives
by Martin Longman
July 29, 2016 12:00 AM
Over the last two days of the Democratic convention the primaries began to slide into largely forgettable history and glimpses of the near-future began to snap into place. What had been largely a conversation about the personalities and characters of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders became much more about the coalition that will seek to perpetuate and perfect what President Obama has created.
Eight years ago, Jeremiah Wright was so toxic that Obama had to shush him and make a speech on race at the Philadelphia Constitution Center. This time, Rev. William Barber II was invited to speak in primetime as a warm-up act for Hillary Clinton. The Democrats didn’t shy away from their African-American and Latino supporters. There was no Jesse Jackson figure to bash, no Sister Souljah to scold. Black and Latino organizers weren’t humored and hidden but invited onto the stage, one after another after another. Muslims weren’t a scary constituency to be scapegoated, but the scapegoating of Muslims was morally shamed in the most visible and compelling way possible. The LGBT community was celebrated over and over again. The disabled have never enjoyed so much focus and respect.
The Democrats did not shy away from celebrating police officers and they went back to the well, over and over again, to emphasize their respect for the military and their concern for veterans. When some in the audience grew uncomfortable and chanted “No More Wars,” the new coalition drowned them out with “U-S-A” chants.
This was a Democratic Party that was fiercely positive about America and completely non-defensive and unapologetic about how their racial diversity, religious pluralism and cultural liberalism might alienate historically critical voting blocs.
Tim Kaine spoke a foreign language repeatedly during his speech, clearly demonstrating that the party does not give a shit about alienating the crowd that seethes when told to push ‘2’ for Spanish. Clinton adopted a more progressive set of policy prescriptions than any modern Democrat, in defiance of people’s expectations and the Clintons’ historical positioning as New Democrats. She was carving so much meat off the moderate Republican bone with her proudly American thematics that she was utterly unconcerned about pushing economic moderates into Trump’s arms.
This was basically the triumph of the counterculture–a kind of bat mitzvah for a decades-long movement–today, you are a woman.
Today, you are the mainstream.
No more apologizing for what you believe. No more bashing your own voters to win the support of bigots.
And because this new progressive movement knows that it is winning and that it owns the future, it’s positive about America. America is a good place that is headed in an even better direction, and they are not fearing any man.
These are all disorientating developments because they defy what people think they know about the Democratic Party and the Clintons and politics in general.
And it’s somewhat of a gamble because it’s still possible that the majority of people in this country do not want to be part of a pluralistic, multiethnic, socially liberal and tolerant society led by a party of people who want to enact a broad liberal agenda.

Holder: Trump May Lack ‘Intellectual Heft’ Needed To Be President
By CAITLIN MACNEAL
Published JULY 29, 2016, 8:48 AM EDT
Former Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday night suggested that Donald Trump may not be “very smart” because he “sees everything in black and white terms.”
CBS News’ Charlie Rose asked Holder about his Wednesday comment questioning whether Trump has “the gray matter” necessary to be president.
“You mean he’s not smart enough to be president? Rose asked.
“Yeah, I wonder,” Holder responded. “I sometimes think that he hides behind a certain bravado to hide a lack of substance that he has.”
“A person this far along in the process, I think we would know a little more about what his plans are. We’d know more about who his mentors might have been, who his intellectual guides might be. And I don’t have any sense that there is any of that to him,” he continued. “He seems to me to be a very shallow man.”
Random thoughts this AM.
I can’t wait to see who Hillary chooses for Attorney General. The Clintons are strong believers in croney-ism, and I believe that will be her first priority in her choices. If Loretta Lynch is asked to stay on, well, that opens up a whole other set of questions.
And I can’t wait to see what happens to Lil’ Debbie. Honestly, I think she’s already endured the worst of it, having to watch the convention on TV. I predict she will be rewarded, perhaps not right away, but eventually.
Bernie will be squashed like a bug, or at least she’ll try. No Secretary of State for Bernie, or anything else. Again, not right away, but eventually.
Also, I don’t think the Trump jokes are going to win Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania where the election is most likely going to be decided. The conventions are over. Now it’s all about math and ground games. Hillary and Trump are household names, folks think they know them. Neither one of them has much of a frontier of new or undecided voters to fire up. The rest of this election is really just a slog through an ocean of sh!t, getting all those complacent and/or disillusioned folks off the couch and into a voting booth.

The Father of an American Muslim War Hero Indicts Donald Trump’s Patriotism
By Eric Levitz
After the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Donald Trump revived his proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the United States. Among his justifications for a policy of overt religious discrimination was that, even if the government could properly vet all Muslim immigrants, it still wouldn’t be able to prevent “the radicalization of their children.” Even a Muslim citizen born in this country, Trump suggested, was an inherent risk to the safety and well-being of other Americans.
In 2004, captain Humayun Khan lost his life in Iraq while protecting the safety and well-being of his fellow American soldiers. On Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention, his father, an American Muslim immigrant, delivered another powerful indictment of Donald Trump’s patriotism in a convention that’s been full of them.
“Donald Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims,” Khizr Khan said in Philadelphia. “He vows to build walls and ban us from this country. Donald Trump: You’re asking Americans to trust us with their future. Let me ask you, have you even read the United States Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy!”
As Khan pulled out his pocket version of the U.S. Constitution, the convention hall exploded.
“In this document, look for the words ‘liberty’ and ‘equal protection of law,’ Khan instructed. “Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery? Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America. You’ll see all faiths, genders, and ethnicities.”
“You have sacrificed nothing!” Khan shouted. “And no one!”
Let’s be clear…

GIRL, I GUESS I’M WITH HER
Girl, I guess I’m with her
Tho’ I’d love to have someone else
Early on I was feeling the Bern
But that’s not how enough people felt
Girl, I suppose I’ll deal with her
Don’t want Trump to pick Supreme Court
No telling who he would come up with
Another Scalia may be in his port
Girl, I guess I’ll bear with her
At a critical time she was silent on Trayvon
Didn’t want to offend swing voters
Knew she had a firewall to lean on
Girl, I guess I’ll stay with her
Not sure that the love is returned
She called black youth “Super Predators”
You would think we would have learned
Girl, I guess I’ll vote with her
My conscience tells me I should not
Been better to groom our own person
Rather than follow her like a robot
HI Double D. Thank you for another brilliant poem. You are a gifted Wordsmith.
Vote your conscience.
Hi Ametia! Thanks so very much for your continued support! Trump will probably win my state (Ga), but I still say #NeverTrump! I won’t vote for him. Be blessed.
TY for this, DD.
My sister lives in Ohio and I told her that she should vote for Hillary. I have family in Florida, but no influence over how they vote, what can I do? I’m in the red state of Arizona, which will go to Trump.
So, I’m not really with her. I’ve done all I can by talking to my sister in Ohio. That’s my contribution.
Thx for responding Liza! I hear you. The choices are awful this cycle, but there’s no way I’m voting for Trump and I won’t sit the election out either. Hence: Girl, I Guess I’m With Her! LOL! Life’s not fair.
And all of that collusion and corruption within the DNC hasn’t exactly been inspirational. But here we are. I feel so sad.
But I do have a vague feeling that something is taking root in America. That folks are getting fed up to their limit and that populist movements are going to eventually prevail regardless of the prevailing power structure. I’ve said for some time that we are witnessing the last dying gasps of white establishment rule and white supremacy. But this 2016 election makes me feel that they have been provided with ventilators. Maybe this is the step backwards before the surge, maybe not. I think a lot of people coming of age right now are realizing that complacency is not an option, they have to organize and make demands or 2016 will be their future. And that is scaring the hell out of them.
Well said Liza! You hit the nail on the head. Whites are fearful of losing ground to POC and Trump speaks to their anxieties. I’m not worried about surviving a Trump presidency so much as I’m worried about surviving the legacy he would leave. The next President will appoint as many as 3 Supreme Court justices. That’s a generational change. We can’t leave something that important in Trump’s hands. So I’ll hold my nose and “Be With Her”
Agreed. Trump MUST be defeated, and I think he will be. Even so, there is so much work to do, and it’s going to take an army of volunteers.
Good Morning 😊, Everyone 😆
TGIF, Everyone!
