More Star Trek!
Even though 3Chics Politico is written and curated by three women: Ametia, Rikyrah, and SouthernGirl2, I must nominate this as one of the most engaging blogs I've found. Devoted to politics and culture, these three shine a light on contemporary life with humor and spirit.

Colin Kaepernick and the Question of Who Gets to Be Called a ‘Patriot’
SEPT. 12, 2016
Citizenship is citizenship, until appearances get in the way. The world now knows, for instance, that Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, is protesting racial injustice — all because of a routine photo, taken during the singing of the national anthem before a preseason game. The photographer, Jennifer Lee Chan, tweeted the image last month, writing, “This team formation for the national anthem is not Jeff Fisher-approved.” Fisher is the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, who, in an episode of the reality football show “Hard Knocks,” told his team that standing for the anthem was sacrosanct: “It’s an opportunity to realize how lucky you are.” Yet here was Kaepernick, sitting down.
Kaepernick’s sitting was, it emerged, a stance. Two days later, he took reporters’ questions, including one about whether he was concerned that his actions could be taken as an indictment of law enforcement. His answer had teeth. “There is police brutality — people of color have been targeted by police,” he said. Then: “You can become a cop in six months and don’t have to have the same amount of training as a cosmetologist. That’s insane. Someone that’s holding a curling iron has more education and more training than people that have a gun and are going out on the street to protect us.”
That’s one rejoinder to the unconditional gratitude — the compulsory expression of thankfulness for a nation that prides itself on freedom of expression — that the Jeff Fishers of the world demand. If you’re a black man, as Kaepernick is, your ambivalence about patriotic rituals may be a way of asking the same question Fisher raised: How lucky are we, exactly?

The Youngstown, Ohio, Trump Republicans
by Martin Longman
September 13, 2016 1:57 PM
If you’re familiar with the lyrics from Bruce Springsteen’s song Youngstown, you might have had the same experience I had while reading Farai Chideya’s latest piece for FiveThirtyEight. The article looks at what’s happening along the eastern border of Ohio where support for Trump is strong. As a point of departure, it features Allan Banner, an Ohio construction worker who recently went back to work operating heavy machinery.
Banner, 66, grew up on a farm in Liberty Township, Ohio, between Youngstown and Warren, that his family has owned for nearly 200 years.
Here’s how Springsteen’s song begins:
Here in northeast Ohio, back in eighteen-o-three
James and Danny Heaton found the ore that was linin’ Yellow Creek
They built a blast furnace here along the shore
And they made the cannon balls that helped the Union win the war
Long roots in eastern Ohio.
A sense of rootedness in the Mahoning Valley community is connected to how Banner views work. He said his great-great-grandfather cut timbers to support the roofs of the coal mines; his father and grandfather worked in the steel industry. Banner and his brother worked union jobs in road construction and rebuilding or tearing down steel mills.
………………………….
This is the history of the region for people like Allan Banner, and both he and Mary Theis [an 81 year-old entrepreneur also featured in the article] describe well what’s happened to it.

Well, Hillary won’t withdraw as long as she is able to breathe on her own. She has less than two months, so she’ll most likely make it. But she’s going to be a one term president.

He’ll probably be the president behind the president especially if HRC is sick.
HA! exactly, JUST MORE OF THE SAME.
VP BIDEN, WHERE ARE YOU?!!!!!!
I knew this was bad, that the DNC was playing a dangerous game. I didn’t see this coming, however. I was watching MSNBC this AM and Bill was blathering about how Hillary gets sick when she’s “been working like a demon” blah blah but she “always recovers.” Now what in the hell is he talking about? Is this some kind of admission that Hillary has more going on than pneumonia? I know she has a history of blood clots and a hypothyroid condition. What else? If the Clintons did this figuring that Bill could pick up the slack if need be, then I’m out of words. Now we just have to wait and see. I don’t expect the full truth and nothing but the truth anytime soon.
dropping this here:
Lochte isn’t worth the effort. Who knows what’s wrong is with him. Maybe he’s swallowed too much chlorinated water.
Yet, all we hear is Clinton’s ill and Trump’s gaining in the polls?
Median income in the United States grew to $56,516 in 2015, the U.S. Census Bureau reports.
That represents a 5.2% raise for American workers, the first gain since 2007.
The poverty rate also declined. It was 13.5%, with 43.1 million people living below the poverty line.

From our President:
Ta-Nehisi Coates takes on the response of some in the media to Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables.”
…what they [journalists] have yet to come to grips with is that Donald Trump is a democratic phenomenon, and that there are actual people – not trolls under a bridge – whom he, and his prejudices against Latinos, Muslims, and blacks, represent.
I do not believe that journalists are so powerful as to disabuse this group of their beliefs. But there is something to be said for not contributing to an opportunistic ignorance. For much of this campaign journalists have attacked Hillary Clinton for being evasive and avoiding hard questioning from their ranks. And then the second Clinton is forthright and says something revealing, she is attacked – not for the substance of what she’s said – but simply for having said it. This hypocrisy carries a chilling implicit message: Lie to me. Lie to the country. Lie to everyone. This weekend was not just another misanalysis, it was a shocking betrayal of the journalistic mission which should urge the revelation of truth as opposed to the propagation of hot takes, Washington jargon, and politics-speak…
The safe space for the act of being white endures today. This weekend, the media, an ostensibly great American institution, saw it challenged and – not for the first time – organized to preserve it. For speaking a truth, backed up by data, Clinton was accused of promoting bigotry. No. The true crime was endangering white consciousness. So it was when the president asserted that it was stupid to arrest a man for breaking into his own home. So it was when the president said that if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon Martin. And so it is when reformers suggest police not stop citizens on so flimsy a pretext as furtive movements. The need to be white is a sensitive matter – one which our institutions are inexorably and mindlessly bound to protect.
“The true crime was endangering white consciousness. So it was when the president asserted that it was stupid to arrest a man for breaking into his own home. So it was when the president said that if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon Martin.”
Yep. No one should be surprised that Hillary will not be treated any better than PBO by our so called (mainstream) news media. Why are they allowed to do this day after day and year after year? They are worthless when it comes to reporting real news, yet they feed like pigs at a trough when some well known person has made a comment calling out white supremacy.
This system is on life support. They just don’t know it yet, apparently.

Nate Silver gives GOP donors a closed-door presentation
By Jonathan Swan
September 12, 2016, 03:04 pm
Nate Silver, the ESPN journalist behind the FiveThirtyEight website, gave a presentation on the 2016 battleground map to a group of powerful Republican donors in Manhattan last week.
Silver was paid to give the presentation by the American Opportunity Alliance, a group led by some of the biggest GOP donors in the country, including hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer and the Ricketts family, which owns the Chicago Cubs.
Silver’s closed-door session was part of a two-day confab, held Sept. 7–8 at Le Bernardin Prive, a private dining room inside a New York City restaurant run by celebrity chef Eric Ripert.
Upward of three dozen top donors attended the gathering, along with senior Republican Party officials and strategists. Silver’s presentation on Wednesday afternoon was a highlight of the two-day event, people at the event said.
I’ll keep this in mind as he’s on TV all of October.
Interesting. But I kind of doubt that Nate Silver had much to say that isn’t already on his web site. He’s focused on the electoral votes which is how you win. And right now he has Hillary and Trump split at an overall 69 / 30 percent probability of winning. Trump hasn’t been over 32 percent since the conventions.
If the election were held today Trump would have to win ALL the blue leaning battleground states including Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Nevada, Iowa, and New Hampshire. He can’t do it. I believe he can win North Carolina and maybe one or two others. But Hillary wins unless he wins all those blue states that are statistically within the margin for error.
The election, from the perspective of the electoral votes which is all that matters on November 8, is shaping up to look like 2012. The GOP has no reason to think that Trump can do any better than Mitt Romney.
I believe that is all they are going to hear from Nate Silver. And I keep reading that Trump has no real ground game in battleground states. That means turnout is really unpredictable. Will all those “deplorables” get off the couch and vote?
