After conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt criticized President George W. Bush’s ethics counsel Richard Painter for lacking professionalism, the former White House official came back at him with ferocity.

While defending EPA secretary Scott Pruitt’s $50-a-night stay in the D.C. apartment of an oil lobbyist’s wife by claiming it wasn’t corrupt, Hewitt’s comments turned personal after Painter rebuked his defense.

“[Pruitt’s actions were] reviewed by the career deputy senior associate general and the ethics official at this agency, for whom I have no knowledge but a great deal of respect,” the radio host said. “Mr. Painter doesn’t. He’s entitled to pass judgment on whoever he wants, but there’s a reason he’s in Minnesota and not Washington, D.C. that goes to whether you have regard for other professionals work.”

“Excuse me!” Painter said, interjecting. “I am fed up of people being attacked in Minnesota, in my state!”

“We are sick and tired of K Street lobbyists who look down on us in Minnesota and say ‘this is the reason you’re in Minnesota’ instead of raking in money in Washington, D.C.,” he continued.

“This is corruption,” Painter said. “This is why the people of Minnesota and every other state here in flyover country, where you wanna look down on us, we are gonna vote these people out.”

“That’s disgusting, what you just said about people in Minnesota,” he continued, directing his anger at Hewitt as his co-panelist smiled. “That somehow we are here because we don’t play by your rules in Washington. We’re gonna shut it down!”

    …When people pay money for these modifications on our school (the only one in the county being altered btw) that means Someone Is Getting Paid and I am Sick and Tired of us being treated like prize pigs.

    Study finds discrimination in VT traffic stops

    of Vermont, black and Hispanic drivers in Vermont are more likely than
    white motorists to be searched by police during traffic stops.

    Vermont Public Radio reports the study found that black and Hispanic drivers in

    After the White House rejected a request to grant significant raises to two of his top aides last month, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt used a loophole in a law meant to ease the hiring of environmental experts to give the staffers raises himself, the Atlantic reported Tuesday.

    The raises went to Pruitt’s senior counsel Sarah Greenwalt and EPA scheduling director Millan Hupp, the Atlantic reported. Their pay increased from $107,435 to $164,200 and $86,460 to $114,590, respectively. Both staffers had worked for Pruitt when he was Oklahoma attorney general.

    The Safe Drinking Water Act allows Pruitt to hire up to 30 people without White House or congressional approval. But instead of using that authority to hire environmental experts needed in certain understaffed offices at the agency, the Atlantic reported, Pruitt used it to give Greenwalt and Hupp the increased salaries he’d wanted — after the White House had rejected his request for the raises, according to unnamed sources familiar with those aspects of the story.

    After receiving intense backlash from hundreds of thousands of outdoorsy Americans, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is moderating his idea to exorbitantly raise entrance fees at the most highly visited national parks, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

    Over the month-long public comment period, the Washington Post reported that the National Park Service website was flooded with outraged comments from people irate over the proposed hike of entry fees from $25 to $70 at several popular parks.

    According to the Washington Post, a price raise is still on the table, but one small enough to avoid driving the incensed masses away from what could be a record-breaking year for visits.

    McCabe, Amazon and Defending the Republic from Donald Trump

    If we credit his account, Andrew McCabe unintentionally gave incomplete or misleading testimony in the course of an inspector general’s investigation and then corrected it as soon as he realized the error – rather than in response to further scrutiny. Let’s remember that the underlying actions he was describing were ones that – whether correct and proper or not – clearly had the effect of damaging Hillary Clinton.

    On the Amazon front, readers will know from my own writing that I think Amazon is guilty of a number of predatory and monopolistic business practices. Though it’s not really the case now, there’s no question that Amazon’s rise was fueled to a significant degree by the regulatory and tax gap which allowed people to buy online without paying sales taxes brick and mortar businesses had to charge. I routinely buy things from Amazon. But its existence has decimated or destroyed almost countless retail operations and replaced them with low wage, rush-rush warehouse jobs sitting on the edges of big cities across the country. One notable thing that people seldom discuss is that with a mix of constant growth, cultivation of market confidence and restraint Amazon has managed to be one of the most successful businesses in American history and pay close to no federal taxes for the simple reason that it’s careful to always operate at a more or less a break-even P&L. In other words, on many fronts Amazon creates huge negative externalities which society at large is subsidizing.

    For the purposes of this conversation, however, I would say none of that matters.

    It is perfectly obvious that President Trump’s long run of personal attacks on Andrew McCabe weren’t driven by his possible unfairness to Hillary Clinton or possible misleading testimony about those actions. Trump’s attacks on McCabe are part of his efforts to attack the FBI in order to discredit the investigation into his campaign’s collusion with Russia and related crimes. McCabe has been a useful target since his wife earlier ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the state legislature in Virginia. That is useful in identifying him as an anti-Trump deep state zealot. Full stop.

    The fact that the FBI is an imperfect institution, ran COINTELPRO, surveilled Martin Luther King and a million other things is beside the point. And confusing the point by raising these issues is either dishonest or blinkered. President Trump isn’t trying to even the scales for these past misdeeds. He’s trying to create a system that is dramatically worse.

    But the bigger point is that it’s not really about McCabe or Amazon. Having a sitting President launching scathing personal attacks on a federal law enforcement officer and demanding his firing or imprisonment for personal and political motives is wildly outside the norms that govern the American system. Similarly, a President who routinely threatens prosecutorial or regulatory vengeance against private companies because they are not sufficiently politically subservient to him personally is entirely outside of our system of governance. At present, Donald Trump is an autocrat without an autocracy. The system mostly resists his demands because it’s not designed to operate that way and we have centuries worth of norms that are remarkably resilient. But systems change. And it’s clear that ours is already starting to change under his malign influence.

    The mainstream media’s skeptical-to-sneering coverage of Fox and Sinclair just endears those outlets to Trump, and causes his diehard supporters to dig in even deeper.

    How it works: “Trump demands instant gratification and the quickest way to do it is to kick a shared enemy of his media allies (WaPo being the one this week). He’ll get instant feedback, phone calls from cable hosts and approving coverage on their shows. It’s the modern version of call and response: his tweets, their chyrons.”

    There are areas across the country where policymakers refuse to make necessary investments in education, but some of the details in this Washington Post piece on Oklahoma put conditions in the Sooner State in an especially unflattering light.

    [Spending cuts] in Oklahoma also had dire consequences for schools. Districts have not been able to maintain buildings, so students shiver through the winter in classrooms with faulty heating and become accustomed to a rotating cast of teachers. Many school districts have moved to four-day school weeks because they cannot afford to keep the lights on for five days.

    Adjusted for inflation, the amount the state spends per student has fallen nearly 30 percent over the past decade, according to the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

    The report added, “Oklahoma’s schools and educators have endured some of the steepest cuts in education in the last decade, reductions that are evident in dwindling supplies, aging textbooks and the pay stubs of teachers. Before last week, state lawmakers have not raised the minimum salary for teachers in a decade, making them among the worst paid in the nation.”

    During a recent meeting on veterans issues, Donald Trump reportedly called a Fox News personality, Pete Hegseth, “to get his opinion” on pending legislation. As the investigation into the Russia scandal intensifies, the president has sought legal guidance from Fox News personality Jeanine Pirro.

    And the Daily Beast reported yesterday that Trump has an especially close relationship with Lou Dobbs, a likeminded Fox Business host, to the point that Dobbs’ voice is literally part of White House discussions.

    During the first year of the Trump era, the president has patched in Dobbs via speakerphone to multiple meetings in the Oval Office so that he could offer his two cents, according to three sources familiar with these conversations. Trump will ask Dobbs for his opinion before and after his senior aides or Cabinet members have spoken. Occasionally, he will cut off an official so the Fox Business host can jump in.

    Dobbs, these sources all independently recounted, has been patched in to senior-level meetings on issues such as trade and tax policy…. During the more intense days of the tax-bill push, Trump made sure to have his White House personal secretary get Dobbs on the line. And toward the conclusion of one memorable meeting, when the line was disconnected and Dobbs said farewell, Trump looked up, smiled, and simply told the room, “Love Lou.”

    Now, according to four sources close to the White House, Trump is discussing ways to escalate his Twitter attacks on Amazon to further damage the company. “He’s off the hook on this. It’s war,” one source told me. “He gets obsessed with something, and now he’s obsessed with Bezos,” said another source. “Trump is like, how can I fuck with him?”

    According to sources, Trump wants the Post Office to increase Amazon’s shipping costs. When Trump previously discussed the idea inside the White Hose, Gary Cohn had explained that Amazon is a benefit to the Postal Service, which has seen mail volume plummet in the age of e-mail. “Trump doesn’t have Gary Cohn breathing down his neck saying you can’t do the Post Office shit,” a Republican close to the White House said. “He really wants the Post Office deal renegotiated. He thinks Amazon’s getting a huge fucking deal on shipping.”

    Carrillo has been housed at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond since he was detained by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents on Oct. 11 when he was picked him up as he was taking his 4-year-old daughter to daycare.

    He has said he noticed a couple of cars following him and pulled into a shopping center. Carrillo was immediately surrounded by ICE officers and was taken to San Francisco and later that night to Richmond.

    Carrillo is a Mexican national. Barraza and her children are citizens, however, she said there was no path to citizenship for her husband, even though he’s married to a citizen.

    She said her husband has no criminal record but was detained on a previous deportation order.

    Since Carrillo’s arrest, an online petition has garnered nearly 4,000 signatures and more than 500 people have called to ask for his release, according to a representative from the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity.

    Just last week Immigration Judge Joseph Park issued a withholding of removal order, allowing Carrillo to remain in the United States.
