Monday Open Thread

Hi Everyone. Collected a few videos from the 2019 NAACP Images Awards show. I don’t know when this organization is going to get their act together and get up to speed on decent website and videos. Any wonder some folks don’t show up for their show.

Any Country That Could Produce Marvin Gaye Has Reason to Hope
    Charles Pierce

t was 37-years ago this Monday that Marvin Gaye was shot to death by his father, Marvin Gay, Sr. Things had been terrible between them for all of the younger Marvin’s life. It had become worse over the previous several months. One layer of the tragedy was that Marvin Gaye was in the middle of a remarkable comeback. His “Sexual Healing” had broken him back onto the charts with a vengeance. Not long before he died, I saw him give a show on Boston Common that damn near melted the golden dome atop the State House. Of course, his place in the pantheon had been sealed by “What’s Goin’ On?”, the 1971 masterpiece that Berry Gordy originally didn’t want to release.

I was with a friend this weekend, and she said that if 45 were serious about presiding, during all these investigations, he and his GOP cohorts would have come up with a BI-PARTISAN healthcare PLAN and BAM! pulled it out during the Barr 4 -page fuckery debacle.

It’s Hard Enough For Student Sexual Assault Survivors. Missouri Lawmakers Are Trying to Make it Even Worse.
A bill under consideration would even allow some accused students to sue their victims.
    MADISON PAULY
    APRIL 1, 2019 6:00 AM

College students deciding whether or not to report sexual assault or harassment to their university already face a slew of barriers. There’s the shame, embarrassment, and fear of going through an emotionally difficult misconduct process. There’s the panic that even if they report, nothing will be done. And, as a landmark 2015 campus sexual assault survey found, there’s the pervasive belief that most incidents aren’t “serious enough” to report—even if they involve forcible penetration.

Now, lawmakers in Missouri are advancing a pair of bills that critics say would make reporting campus sexual misconduct even more difficult, allowing colleges to raise the bar for victims to prove their cases and providing powerful disincentives to speak up about sexual violence.
