Friday Open Thread | Nancy Pelosi: William Barr committed a crime

Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday accused Attorney General William Barr of committing a crime by lying to Congress, blasting him in a closed-door meeting and later at a news conference.

“We saw [Barr] commit a crime when he answered your question,” Pelosi told Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.) during a private caucus meeting Thursday morning, according to two sources present for the gathering.

“He lied to Congress. He lied to Congress,” Pelosi said soon after at a news conference. “And if anybody else did that, it would be considered a crime. Nobody is above the law. Not the president of the United States, and not the attorney general.”

The allegation comes as Democrats have intensified their criticisms of the attorney general over his handling of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, his refusal to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, and the Justice Department’s unwillingness to comply with a subpoena for the full unredacted report.

Pelosi’s comments were an apparent reference to Barr’s response to Crist last month during a House Appropriations Committee hearing, when the attorney general said he was not aware of any concerns that Mueller’s investigators might have expressed about his four-page summary of Mueller’s findings.

Barr’s response appeared to contradict the revelation earlier this week that Mueller himself wrote to the attorney general, saying he was worried that Barr’s summary “threatens to undermine … public confidence” in the Russia probe. Mueller also said Barr’s memo “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance” of the investigation.

    That seems problematic.

My prediction is that some of those Biden and Sanders supporters (not the die hards) will be slowly moving toward Sen Harris. I don’t expect a surge, just some movement. Right now a lot of this, what you see in the polls, is just name recognition.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar says she can work with Republicans, unlike, that…*cough* cough* Obama..

    Podcast Speakeasy with John Harwood

    • Ametia says:

Snip Amy knowws where the bodies are buried REALLY?

John Harwood: There are a few people in the race — you’re one of them — who are making the argument that they can better attract Republican votes and attract Republican cooperation on some of their priorities when they come in. When Gov. [John] Hickenlooper got in the race, he said the first day, “You know, I’m going to walk down to Mitch McConnell’s office and I’m going to sit down and talk to him and persuade him to do things that we believe in.” A lot of people watching that had the reaction of, “Are you kidding? Have you been paying attention the last 10 years? That’s ridiculous.” Why is that view wrong?

Amy Klobuchar: I do think you have to work across the aisle to get things done. But as we’ve learned over the years with how Senator McConnell runs the Senate, you have to stand your ground. You have to make clear where you are not going to budge, where you’re going to stand up for the people of this country. I would have a good understanding of that because I have worked with him and worked in the Senate for years.

John Harwood: But you really think that, where President Obama could not get Republican cooperation on almost any of the major things that he was doing, that you could?

Amy Klobuchar: I know those senators well. I’ve been in that Senate for a number of years now. When I look at the priorities I’ve laid out, including the pharmaceutical issue to bring the prices down, I know where the bodies are buried there. I know, despite the fact that you’ve got two lobbyists for every member of Congress, which senators are willing to work like Sen. Grassley on bringing down the prices of pharmaceuticals and which ones I think could be pushed to do something out of just sheer political reasons because they’re going to lose in their state if they don’t do something about it. But you need a president that’s willing to make it an issue. Or infrastructure — there’s no such thing as a Republican bridge or a Democratic bridge. There’s bridges in every state. There’s transit and roads and schools that are crumbling. I also know which senators want to work on that. And that is why in my proposal, my big infrastructure proposal, I included some bipartisan proposals. But this doesn’t mean you’re a pansy. It just means you’re a realist. That if you’re going to get things done, you’ve got to look to where you have friends, and where you have enemies, and move ahead and get it done. You have to set those priorities from day one when you get into the White House.

Amy, do you think PBO didn’t try to work with the GOP THUGS? And i as we know President Obama did, Why do you think Repubs would reach out and touch somebodies hand, like yours, and not PBO?
