OMG. Mr. Serwer just verbalized my first thought after hearing about Rep John Lewis’ illness.
The most significant historical events for my generation are the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. I’ve studied both, for decades. No matter what else happens, I keep going back there, learning more, connecting more dots, wondering how I missed so much.
Public memory fades, to be sure. Eventually, the only people who will study the 20th century are historians and that appears to be coming sooner rather than later. Public education certainly doesn’t do much to ameliorate our collective lack of historical knowledge, and that has cost us dearly.
