With the dropping of the beginning of their documentary series on Netflix, there has been misinterpretation of Meghan being ” White Presenting” versus “White Passing”.
These are two entirely different things.
White presenting is exactly what it sounds like – to the visual eyes, most White people will see you as another White person. I say White people, because Black people, with very few exceptions, will know a ‘WHITE PRESENTING’ Black person. This is because, historically, it is not uncommon for Black Americans to have someone in their family that is White Presenting, but, Black. Same set of Black parents, but, because of genetics, and because, as a community, we have been ‘ mixed race’ since the first time Master went down to the slave quarters, we honestly don’t know how a Black child will come out.
I can use my own maternal grandparents as an example. My grandfather would have been comfortable walking down the streets of any Scottish town, and nobody would have blinked an eye. My grandmother was ‘ Black as the ace of spades’. Her wish, when she was pregnant was that the baby came out ‘ normal and healthy’, because she knew ‘ they’d come out light like their father, dark like me, or somewhere in between.’ And, it’s true. She had everyone from my White Presenting, red-headed Aunt, to my chocolate Uncles and all shades in between.
Meghan Markle is White Presenting. She is not White Passing.
White Passing has rules to it:
1. You cut yourself off from your Black family
2. Nobody knows that you have any Black family
3. You cut yourself off from anyone who might remotely remember your Black family
The best cinema productions about White Passing were the two versions of Imitation of Life.

The Black and White version had an actual White Presenting Black Actress- Fredi Washington, whose career in Hollywood was forever stunted because she refused to not be presented as a Black actress.
I prefer the 1959 version in color. For a couple of generations, our Black mothers always let us stay up to watch it whenever it was on. I do the UGLY CRY everytime that I watch it. Every single time. Later in life, I came to believe that our mothers had us watch it because they wanted us to learn the lesson of ‘ don’t you ever break your Mama’s heart the way that Sarah Jane did Annie”. And, we we watched it, tears streaming down our faces, we made that vow to our mothers.
Another movie about Passing is Pinky.
