Some student-loan borrowers have just 1 month left to get closer to debt cancellation — and they need to take action
Ayelet Sheffey Apr 1, 2024, 4:31 AM CDT

Some student-loan borrowers have one month left to benefit from one-time account adjustments.
Borrowers who do not have qualifying loans need to consolidate by April 30.
The Education Department expects to complete account adjustments in July.

Some student-loan borrowers have just one month to get closer to debt relief.

President Joe Biden’s Education Department is nearing the end of its one-time account adjustment for borrowers on income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

First implemented last summer, the adjustment allowed the department to evaluate borrowers’ accounts every other month to determine which borrowers qualified for debt relief but had yet to receive it. The department said it expects adjustments to be completed by July 1 — and while it happens automatically for some borrowers, others will need to take action soon to benefit from the temporary provision.

To benefit from the adjustment, borrowers must be in the federal direct loan program or the Federal Family Education Loan program with government-held loans. The department recommends that For those without qualifying loans apply to consolidate into one of the programs by April 30.

…………………….

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also released an advisory in early March reminding borrowers of the consolidation deadline. It said that borrowers with the following federal loans will need to consolidate to benefit from the adjustment:

Commercially held FFEL loans

Parent PLUS loans

Perkins loans

Health Education Assistance Loan Program loans

To consolidate, borrowers can go to studentaid.gov/loan-consolidation.

Alabama secretary of state says Democratic convention too late to get Biden on ballot this fall

Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen has notified the state and national Democratic parties that the scheduled date of the Democratic National Convention is a few days after the deadline for the party to put its nominees for president and vice president on the ballot for the general election in November.

Allen, who is a Republican, said state law requires parties to provide a certification of nomination for president and vice president no later than Aug. 15.

“It has recently come to my attention that the Democratic National Convention is currently scheduled to convene on August 19, 2024, which is after the State of Alabama’s statutory deadline for political parties to provide a certificate of nomination for President and Vice President,” Allen wrote in a letter to Randy Kelley, Chair of the Alabama Democratic Party. “If this Office has not received a valid certificate of nomination from the Democratic Party following its convention by the statutory deadline, I will be unable to certify the names of the Democratic Party’s candidates for President and Vice President for ballot preparation for the 2024 general election.”

The 82-day deadline has been in Alabama’s election law since 1975, according to the Allen’s office.

The Democrats are expected to nominate President Joe Biden for a rematch with the presumed Republican nominee, Donald Trump

The Influential Conservative Group Making it Harder for Idaho Districts to Fix Their Schools
The Idaho Freedom Foundation has gone beyond the education culture wars by targeting local bond and levy elections, which districts rely on heavily to build and repair schools.

by Becca Savransky, Idaho StatesmanApril 9, 6 a.m. EDT

The blue and orange leaflets that arrived in Idaho Falls mailboxes ahead of the school bond election in November 2022 looked like the usual fare that voters across the country get. Sent out by the school district, the mailers encouraged people in the eastern Idaho city to register to vote and listed bullet points highlighting what the bond would pay for.

But the mailers, along with other materials the district distributed, would lead the county prosecutor’s office to fine the superintendent and the district’s spokesperson, accusing them of violating election law by using taxpayer money to advocate for the bond measure. According to the prosecutor, it was illegal for district officials to describe the schools as “overcrowded” and “aged” or to say that students “need modern, safe, and secure schools.”

Such penalties were made possible by a 2018 state law originally pushed by the Idaho Freedom Foundation, a conservative lobbying group that has become a big player in Idaho Republican politics. The foundation has stoked hostility toward public education across the state, pushing book bans in school libraries and accusing districts of indoctrinating students with “woke” ideas like critical race theory.

But unlike groups in other states, the Freedom Foundation has extended its reach by targeting school bond and levy elections, which have traditionally been local issues and are the main ways districts build and repair schools.

2016 WAS A FLUKE, TRUMP DOESN’T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES

Our own Cletus always makes the point that what happened in 2016 was a fluke, a happenstance, a convergence of forces which was the equivalent of pulling an inside straight. It is very unlikely to be repeated. Our agencies are on guard against hostile state actors using propaganda to influence the election. The attacks which landed on Hillary Clinton don’t have the same effect on Joe Biden. Donald Trump is not a cipher, but has a record to run on. And a majority of voters are aware of the threat to democracy which Trump and his MAGA Party are. In other words, if Trump is going to win, he’s going to have to do it on his political nous.

Sadly for him, he has none.

Yesterday, he released his much-anticipated statement on the subject of abortion. He began the video by again crowing that he was the president who finally got Roe v. Wade overturned. Then he went on to say that abortion policy should be left up to the states.

In doing so, he angered everyone. Abortion rights activists quickly pointed out that the radical anti-abortionists surrounding him are planning to implement a national ban if they win all branches of government. And Trump will simply go along with whatever they put in front of him to sign. Meanwhile, people like Mike Pence were scathing in their judgment, saying that Trump betrayed the anti-abortion movement which put him into office. He didn’t assuage those suburban women, and he upset the abortion hardliners.

This is an example of Trumpian panic. Far from being the alpha male he attempts to project, he knows that the upcoming election interference, “hush money” trial brought by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg will likely end in conviction. He spent all day yesterday trying to delay the trial’s start next Monday. His effort to change venue was dismissed by the appellate court. Today his appeal on the gag order will also, most likely, fail. His cries of “presidential immunity”, even if germane—which they are not—would be immaterial, as the crime took place before he assumed office. Trump knows he’s about to go to prison, or at least be convicted and have to spend the rest of the election season fighting an appeal and the start of the Jack Smith and Fulton County prosecutions. Add to that the fact that it seems that the bond he posted for the fraud appeal is itself fraudulent, and we can but hope that he’ll have that final psychotic break for which we all yearn.
