It looks like Sen. Katie Britt is doing damage control. Just a few weeks after introducing legislation that would establish a government-run website that would collect data on pregnant women, Britt is pushing new legislation she claims will “protect” IVF. Co-sponsored with Sen. Ted Cruz, Britt says the IVF Protection Act “affirms both life and liberty.”
“As a mom, I know firsthand that there is no greater blessing than our children, and IVF helps families across our nation experience the joyous miracle of life, grow, and thrive,” Britt said in a statement.
We all know what this is about. Ever since the massive national backlash to Alabama’s Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are “extrauterine children,” Republicans have been desperate to convince voters that they’re not interested in targeting IVF.
But here’s the thing: the “IVF Protection Act” doesn’t actually protect IVF. In fact, it allows states to restrict the practice!
Let’s take a closer look at the language of the legislation. The bill defines IVF as “the practice whereby eggs are collected from ovaries and manually fertilized by sperm, for later placement inside of a uterus.” This limited definition is deliberate: No one is objecting to the process of retrieving eggs and fertilizing them, the issue is what happens to frozen embryos.
Those undergoing IVF often create multiple embryos to give them the greatest chance at conceiving. Many of those embryos will later be discarded, either because they’re unusable or because a patient had a successful implantation with another embryo.
Discarding embryos is a normal part of the fertility treatment process—but the anti-abortion movement opposes it. That’s why the bill doesn’t mention it. What the legislation does include, however, is language that protects states’ ability to restrict what happens to frozen embryos:
“Nothing in the IVF Protection Act shall be construed to impede States from implementing health and safety standards regarding the practice of in vitro fertilization.”
What does “health and safety standards” mean? Onerous restrictions on the IVF process that make it difficult, if not impossible, for fertility doctors to operate. (Similar to anti-abortion TRAP laws, Republicans will say these regulations are in women’s best interest.)
Anti-abortion lobbyists want states to impose limits on how many embryos can be created, for example, and dictate how those embryos can be used. And just a few months ago, the anti-choice Charlotte Lozier Institute submitted a public comment to the CDC advising them to report and regulate the embryos used in fertility treatments:
They do not support IVF. And, they just want to lie and cover up for November.

Donald Trump is now telling his top donors that it will cost $25 million or more to get a chance for a private moment with the former president, according to The Washington Post. Donors who attended a lavish meeting with the former president at a hotel in New York earlier this month told the newspaper about a story Trump allegedly told them of a businessman who offered the $1 million lunch deal. “I’m not having lunch,” Trump is said to have responded. “You’ve got to make it $25 million.” Another businessman was told the former president would not be “very happy” if the man donated his traditional $2 million to $3 million, and that Trump expected a $25 million or $50 million contribution. The donors said Trump backed up his comments by blaming Biden for ending tax cuts for the rich by 2025 if he is to resume office. “So whatever you guys can do, I appreciate it,” Trump said.

U. of C. withholds degrees of four seniors who participated in pro-Palestinian encampment
The University of Chicago was Youssef Hasweh’s dream school. It’s why the senior chose to work at its admissions office. He guided campus tours, answered phones for prospective students and spoke on admissions panels. The 22-year-old was set to graduate Saturday.
But just hours after he completed his final exams Friday, Hasweh received an email informing him that his degree would be withheld pending a school disciplinary process related to his involvement with the university’s pro-Palestinian encampment. Three other seniors also received an email from the university, according to student group UChicago United for Palestine.
“I loved this university,” Hasweh said. “But this year made my UChicago dream a nightmare.”
A U. of C. spokesman said the school could not comment on individual student disciplinary matters, but noted that the process is standard practice after a formal complaint is reviewed by the university’s Disciplinary Committee.

The four students are still able to participate in graduation and other end-of-year events, and their degrees can be later conferred depending on the resolution of the disciplinary process. But if the committee finds that certain policies have been violated, their degrees could be denied, despite four years of coursework and tuition.

Folks, this narrative is entirely media-driven and just plain bullshit. The truth is that President Biden is virtually tied with Trump in national polls and either leads or is tied in the key “blue wall” states that could secure his election win.
Looking back at historical elections:
– Al Gore was trailing by seven points at a similar juncture in the 2000 election but ultimately won the popular vote and, arguably, the election.
– John Kerry held a significant lead over George W. Bush at this point in the 2004 election but ended up losing both the Electoral College and the popular vote.
– John McCain led in September of the 2008 election but ultimately lost considerably in November.
– Mitt Romney and President Obama were neck-and-neck in the 2012 election at this point, with Romney even leading in some polls. Romney went on to lose the election by a comfortable margin.
The point is polls have been consistently wrong at this juncture in the race and even later.
