FINNERTY: We’re hearing reports that 20 million people could lose Medicaid. Do people need to be concerned?
REP. GREG MURPHY: If we don’t act, this nation’s finances will spiral out of control.
FINNERTY: Spiral out of control? Yet there’s $240,000 a day for Trump’s golf security, but no money for healthcare?
MURPHY: We have to make tough choices to ensure long-term stability.
FINNERTY: Medicaid has faced these “tough choices” before—and every time, the people fought back.
MURPHY: Past reforms have strengthened the program, but spending can’t be unlimited.
FINNERTY: 1997 Balanced Budget Act—they tried cutting Medicaid, but public pressure forced expansion instead.
MURPHY: That was a different time, with different fiscal challenges.
FINNERTY: 2017 AHCA—they tried slashing $880 billion, but backlash killed it in Congress.
MURPHY: We need a responsible approach to keep the program sustainable.
FINNERTY: 2023-24 budget fights—even some Republicans pushed back because they knew cuts would be political suicide.
MURPHY: Our goal is not to take coverage away but to make it more efficient.
FINNERTY: If they can find $45 million to fund Trump’s golf trips, they can find money to keep seniors and low-income families covered.
MURPHY: We need to prioritize economic stability for future generations.
FINNERTY: The only thing being prioritized here is tax cuts for the rich and luxury weekends for Trump—while working Americans get left behind.

The Trump Voters Who Like What They See
“Even if they don’t agree with everything he’s doing, he’s doing something.”
By Elaine Godfrey
Earlier this month, after it became clear that the Trump administration would not be facilitating the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from a Salvadoran megaprison, I texted a close childhood friend. He’d voted for Donald Trump in each of the past three presidential elections, and I asked for his evaluation. “Trump might be taking it too far,” my friend replied. “But then again,” he added, “he’s a man of action and we wanted change.”
Someday in the future, historians might well point to April 2025 as the first sign of an enduring erosion in Trump’s popular support. In just the first week of this month, America witnessed another mass expulsion of federal workers, in this case from several health agencies, followed by a tariff rollout that sent 401(k)s plunging like a Six Flags log flume. Even with stocks partially rebounding, feedback from riders has not been great for the president: Poll after poll has registered a drop in overall support for Trump, with many voters citing economic uncertainty. Trump’s numbers on immigration, long a strength of his, are also beginning to slip. Another recent survey suggests that Trump has the lowest approval rating of any newly elected president in at least 70 years.
But even as Trump’s critics cheer the apparent change of heart among some of his supporters, they face an inconvenient reality: Many of his voters are jubilant. For these happy millions, the first 100 days of Trump’s second presidency have been a procession of fulfilled campaign promises—and have brought the country not to the precipice of economic ruin or democratic collapse, but to a golden age of greatness. They see Trump as ushering in a new era of action, according to my conversations with several Trump supporters and pollsters in recent days. “Even if they don’t agree with everything he’s doing, he’s doing something, and something is better than nothing,” Rich Thau, the president of the nonpartisan qualitative-research firm Engagious, told me.

This Conclave Will Be Different
The media have never had so much influence on the men who pick the pope.
By Francis X. Rocca
Correctly predicting the outcome of the papal conclave that starts tomorrow would take intuition, access, and—most important—dumb luck. Think of a U.S. presidential election but with 133 candidates, an international electorate, and no polling. Still, news outlets publish innumerable lists of papabili, or potential popes, often based on blind speculation. The exercise can get tedious, but it will matter more than you might think: The media have never had so much influence on a conclave.
To understand why, consider that the late Pope Francis picked the most far-flung group of cardinals in history. Two dozen hail from countries that had never produced a cardinal, such as Tonga, Myanmar, and East Timor. Distance has made an unusual number of them strangers. Francis added to their unfamiliarity by convening the college of cardinals less often than his predecessors. Under his tenure, they gathered for an open discussion just once, in 2014, when only a minority of the current electors belonged to the body. (A group of cardinals used the occasion to object to the pope’s leniency on divorce—an experience Francis evidently didn’t want to repeat.)

Trump Finally Drops the Anti-Semitism Pretext
The latest letter to Harvard makes clear that the administration’s goal is to punish liberal institutions for the crime of being liberal.
By Rose Horowitch
The intensely hostile letter that Education Secretary Linda McMahon sent to the leadership of Harvard yesterday has a lot going on. But the most notable thing about it is what it leaves out.
To hear McMahon tell it, Harvard is a university on the verge of ruin. (I say McMahon because her signature is at the bottom of the letter, but portions of the document are written in such a distinctive idiolect—“Why is there so much HATE?” the letter asks; it signs off with “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”—that one detects the spirit of a certain uncredited co-author.) She accuses it of admitting students who are contemptuous of America, chastises it for hiring the former blue-city mayors Bill de Blasio and Lori Lightfoot to teach leadership (“like hiring the captain of the Titanic to teach navigation”), questions the necessity of its remedial-math program (“Why is it, we ask, that Harvard has to teach simple and basic mathematics?”), and accuses its board chair, Penny Pritzker (“a Democrat operative”), of driving the university to financial ruin, among many other complaints. The upshot is that Harvard should not bother to apply for any new federal funding, because, McMahon declares, “today’s letter marks the end of new grants for the University.”
What you will not find in the McMahon letter is any mention of the original justification for the Trump administration’s ongoing assault on elite universities: anti-Semitism. As a legal pretext for trying to financially hobble the Ivy League, anti-Semitism had some strategic merit.
