Telling working-class families that the real obstacle their kids face is zero-sum competition from foreign students makes it easier to take away resources boosting working-class kids to fund tax cuts for the rich.

The bill that House Rs passed, which Trump is pushing, could result in at least 700,000 kids losing access to financial aid for higher ed, and raise costs for countless more.
All this comes as Trump blames foreign students for taking US kids’ slots. 4/
If Trump wants to put lots more money into vocational training, he and Rs can pass something into law that does this, with no strings attached. The GOP bill does put some more into trade schools but simultaneously makes it harder for many to get the $. 5/
Trump only gets seriously interested in the idea of putting more money into vocational training when he can say he’s taking that money away from Harvard first. Everything is zero sum. Everything must always serve the MAGA Two Minute Hate of the moment. 6/
Pundits often say elites gaming our meritocracy will fuel support for Trump’s attacks on elite institutions like Harvard.

Our colleges and universities being open to enrolling international students, goes a long way to help keep the United States going. We are poaching some of ‘the best and the brightest’ from other countries, and plucking them for ourselves. Many of them choose to remain in the US after college, and decide to build a life here. A well-educated immigrant base that helps keep America in the game on a global scale.

A slight majority feel the administration’s deportation efforts are prioritizing people they believe are dangerous criminals. Those who say this are very supportive of the program, and feel the program is making people in the U.S. safer.
