Open Thread | The Disrespect Towards Our Transgender Service Members

WASHINGTON (AP) – US Air Force says it will deny retirement pay to transgender service members being separated from the service.

This poster has a more detailed account of the totality of this horror.

This is being somewhat misreported, and I think it’s important to correctly frame it, so that folks don’t sound clownish when they’re advocating for the retirement benefits of trans service members.

The Air Force is denying *early retirement* to trans service members who have served 15-18 years and are being forced out.

As most folks know, Active Duty members of the military are eligible for retirement at 20 years. This is a separate thing from medical retirement, by the way.

Service members who haven’t yet reached 20 years can apply for an exception to policy. This is often granted under particular circumstances.

For example, let’s say you have a Master Sergeant who has served 18 years but has severe medical problems that are service-connected. Early retirement honors that they would have been eligible at 20 years but were basically forced out for circumstances beyond their control.

So, trans service members who are just years away from retirement after a long career of honorable service are being denied early retirement status they would have otherwise been granted in other situations. It’s beyond cruel and degrading.

So, when you talk about this, make sure you get it right: trans service members are being forced out and top of that, they’re being denied early retirement status they’ve certainly earned.

What’s the point of sharing this with no context or details? Republicans in Congress blocked DC from spending nearly a billion dollars of their own money, forcing her to cover police salaries, school programs, road repair, & even public toilets. Trump controls everything. https://t.co/RIjHuCKSww

He must be able to outline what it means.
