Feds Sue Fox News Over Reporter Catherine Herridge’s Charges Of Discrimination, Retaliation

WASHINGTON — Federal authorities are suing the Fox News Network for allegedly retaliating against a reporter after she complained about unequal pay and job conditions based on her gender and age.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says Fox News Channel reporter Catherine Herridge filed an internal complaint about allegedly discriminatory practices in 2007.
Fox found no evidence of bias, but the EEOC says the network later included language in Herridge’s employment contract intended to stop her from making any more complaints.
Herridge refused to sign the contract. The network agreed to remove the language after she complained to the EEOC.
The EEOC seeks unspecified monetary damages and a court order enjoining Fox from retaliating against other employees.
No surprises here. The faux crew wanted to GAG the lady. I guess a lil S&M never hurt anybody…..

Child nutrition bill, priority for first lady, stalls

A child nutrition bill that was a centerpiece of Michelle Obama’s healthful eating campaign stalled in the House on Wednesday after anti-hunger groups and more than 100 Democrats protested the use of food stamp dollars to pay for it.
The bill, which passed unanimously in the Senate this summer, would have mandated strict nutrition standards for all food sold in schools and boosted spending on school meals and other nutrition programs by $4.5 billion over 10 years — the first increase since 1973. The legislation must be reauthorized every five years. In 2009, Congress passed a one-year extension.
Anti-hunger advocates denounced the bill, which was to be funded in part by $2 billion in cuts to the federal food stamp program, or SNAP. The reduction, according to the Washington-based Food Research and Action Center, would have cut $59 from a typical family of four’s monthly food budget. Calling such cuts egregious, 106 Democrats wrote to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in protest.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Legislation to turn down the volume on those loud TV commercials that send couch potatoes diving for their remote controls looks like it’ll soon become law.
The Senate unanimously passed a bill late Wednesday to require television stations and cable companies to keep commercials at the same volume as the programs they interrupt.
The House has passed similar legislation. Before it can become law, minor differences between the two versions have to be worked out when Congress returns to Washington after the Nov. 2 election.
Ever since television caught on in the 1950s, the Federal Communication Commission has been getting complaints about blaring commercials. But the FCC concluded in 1984 there was no fair way to write regulations controlling the “apparent loudness” of commercials. So it hasn’t been regulating them.
Correcting sound levels is more complicated than using the remote control. The television shows and ads come from a variety of sources, from local businesses to syndicators.

3:08 p.m. | Updated President Obama will give his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, a send-off Friday as Mr. Emanuel officially announces his departure from the West Wing to run for mayor of Chicago, officials familiar with the decision said.
The White House press secretary, Robert Gibbs, at his daily briefing on Thursday afternoon said that the president would give two personnel announcements on Friday morning from the East Room of the White House. Mr. Gibbs, admitting that he was being purposely “oblique,” would not confirm whether the announcements would concern Mr. Emanuel.

Fox News Viewership Plunges 21% While MSNBC Grows

The cable news ratings for the third quarter of 2010 were released today, and Fox News is showing signs of decline as their viewership has decreased by 21%, and their top shows all posted double digit losses, while MSNBC’s shows grew and the network attracted more younger viewers.
Fox News is still dominating the cable news ratings. The network has the top 11 programs in cable news, but there are ominous signs that the empire is starting to crack. Compared to the third quarter of 2009, Fox has lost 21% of their total viewers, and 26% of their younger viewers. The biggest loser on the network was Bill O’Reilly who saw his program The O’Reilly Factor lose 12% of its total viewers and 21% of its young viewers. Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Bret Baier, and Greta Van Susteren rounded out the top five cable news shows, and they each posted double digit declines.

AP Sources: Rahm Emanuel leaving White House on Friday

CHICAGO (AP) — Two people close to Rahm Emanuel said Thursday he will resign as White House chief of staff on Friday, and will begin his campaign for Chicago mayor by meeting with voters in the city on Monday.
The two people familiar with his plans, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they did not want to pre-empt Emanuel’s announcement, said he will return to Chicago over the weekend and begin touring neighborhoods on Monday.
“He intends to run for mayor,” one of the people told The Associated Press.
Both people said they did not know when Emanuel would make an official announcement about his mayoral bid but that he would launch a website with a message to Chicago voters in the near future.
Emanuel’s plans have been the source of widespread speculation both in Chicago and Washington, D.C. ever since Mayor Richard Daley announced this month he would not seek re-election. In an April television interview, Emanuel had called it “no secret” he’d like to run for mayor.
Daley, who has held the mayor’s job since 1989 and carried on a family dynasty, surprised many with his announcement. The choice for Emanuel suddenly became whether he would make a dash for the political job he has openly coveted, at a cost of uprooting his family again and quitting his post of national influence sooner than he thought.

Republican New York gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino got into an explosive confrontation Wednesday with Fred Dicker, the longtime Albany reporter for the New York Post — and it was all captured on video.
After it was revealed that Paladino has a ten-year-old daughter from a previous affair, the Tea Partier alleged that his rival for the governorship, Democrat Andrew Cuomo, had also had affairs.
“Has anybody asked Andrew Cuomo about his paramours?” he asked a reporter from Politico.
But Paladino offered no proof for his claims. On Wednesday, Dicker confronted the candidate about his allegations and asked him to provide some evidence.
“What evidence do you have for something most people would consider a smear?” he asked.
Things became heated very quickly, as the two got into each other’s faces and Paladino’s security guards moved to separate him from Dicker. Paladino repeatedly told Dicker that he would get the evidence “at the appropriate time,” and Dicker kept asking him to provide proof.
Paladino said that “goons” from the Post had gone to see his daughter.
“You send another goon to my daughter’s house and I’ll take you out, buddy,” Paladino said.
“How are you gonna do that?” Dicker shot back.
“Watch,” Paladino responded.
The entire exchange was captured in videos by reporters from Capital Tonight and CBS6 Albany.

FCC changes position on cell phone radiation and safety guidelines
The Federal Communications Commission has updated its views on cellphone safety in a move criticized by a public interest group for downplaying the potential risks that radio frequencies could pose to users.
The agency, without issuing a press release, made the update on its Web site, saying that its guidelines on radio frequency limits were confusing and did not necessarily show whether one phone is safer than another.
Specifically, the FCC revamped its Web entry on cell phone health guidelines, removing a suggestion that users concerned about the radiation emitted from cellphones could choose devices with lower SAR values. SAR stands for “specific absorption rate,” which is a measure of the rate of radio-frequency energy absorbed by the body.
“The FCC requires that cell phone manufacturers conduct their SAR testing to include the most severe, worst-case (and highest power) operating conditions for all the frequency bands used in the USA for that cell phone,” the agency wrote on its consumer and governmental affairs section.

Joe Arpaio Accused of Misusing $80 Million in Taxpayer Funds

How tough exactly is America’s toughest sheriff? The country is about to find out. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been slammed by a set of damning reports in the last week that allege the Arizona sheriff misused $80 million in taxpayer money. The report, released on Wednesday, prompted the Board of Supervisors to place the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office under budget restrictions. Maricopa County Board attorney Tom Irvine called the findings the “biggest misspending of state funds in the history of Arizona.”
Last week one of Arpaio’s own deputy chiefs released a 63-page memo charging Arpaio with allowing MCSO’s corruption and abuse to infect the entire department.
Both reports have been directed to local and federal authorities for further investigation, and the typically chatty Arpaio’s stayed mum, letting county spokespeople do the talking for him.
“The $80 million figure, I think, is pure hyperbole, and I thought it was a vicious attempt to make Sheriff Arpaio look like he’s a poor manager,” Interim chief deputy Jerry Sheridan told the Arizona Republic.
The Maricopa County Office of Management and Budget combed through years of financial reports and found that Arpaio had been maintaining a shadow records system to hide the fact that his department was spending millions from a taxpayer-fund public-corruption probes of Arpaio’s critics and immigration sweeps. The voter-approved jail fund was set up in 1998 for guard salaries and jail expansion, but had been squandered on unrelated expenses. New America Media reports that the county board found other unexplained expenses, including money spent on hotels and meals and trips abroad, including a stay at the Disneyland Yacht Club Resort.
He’s a straight psycho bully and has no business in law enforcement.

The grants, part of healthcare reform, aim to help pregnant women and teen parents with schooling, child care or other assistance. Supporting pregnant women and teens is one of the ways the White House wants to find common ground with abortion foes. Abortion foes usually see things as black and white, though. They don’t believe in the pragmatic goal of working toward reducing abortions.
The Obama administration announced its first round of grants from a new fund aimed at helping pregnant women and parenting teens on Wednesday, a move the White House framed as part of its “common ground” approach to abortion.
The Health and Human Services Department distributed $27 million for the federal government’s Pregnancy Assistance Fund on Wednesday, the department said in a press release, awarding grants to 17 states and 13 American Indian tribes
The grants support programs helping pregnant women and teen parents who are trying to complete high school or who need assistance with health care, child care and housing, HHS said. The grants can also be used to combat violence against pregnant women.

‘Worship Satan’ Spray-Painted On St. Louis Mosque In Second Act Of Vandalism In As Many Weeks

Two weeks ago, vandals spraypainted the words “Worship Satan” and drew a pentagon along the side of the Masjid Qooba mosque in St. Louis. The FBI immediately began investigating the incident, but made no arrests.
Now, vandalism has once again befallen the mosque. The words “Worship Satan” were spray-painted over a different wall of the same mosque, alarming its worshippers. The FBI and St. Louis Police are both investigating the incident, and suspect the same vandals from the incident two weeks earlier may be responsible.
In an interview with local news station KMOV, mosque spokesman Tim Kaminski said the mosque is not interested in pursuing charges against the vandal or vandals. “What we would like is for this person to come forward and come clean,” said Kaminski. “We have no rancor, no anger. We want to talk to this person. Explain to them what Islam is, that we worship the same God as the Christian and Jewish traditions do.”

A couple of hours before President Obama offered a boffo revival of his 2008 campaign persona during a boisterous rally at the University of Wisconsin, Sen. Bernie Sanders was analyzing why the president was in a political pickle in the first place.
Sanders, the independent from Vermont who caucuses with the Democrats, speaks warmly of Obama. But unlike the man in the White House, Sanders actually is a socialist and believes devoutly in grass-roots, class-based politics.
And it is his faith in the power of a progressive movement organized around a clear set of commitments that lies at the heart of Sanders’s critique of where the president went wrong.
“Think back to two years ago,” Sanders said during an interview in the only Senate office decorated with a medallion of Eugene V. Debs, the legendary American Socialist leader. “There were rallies involving 80,000 to 100,000. Obama was running the best campaign I’ve seen in my lifetime — and I’m pretty critical.”
“Why are we where we are today?” he continues. “The most serious mistake the president made was not, in a sense, continuing the thrust of his campaign, and [in] forgetting all he accomplished.”

J.P. Morgan Chase, one of the nation’s leading banks, announced Wednesday that it will freeze foreclosures in about half the country because of flawed paperwork, a move that Wall Street analysts said will pressure the rest of the industry to follow suit.
The bank’s decision will affect 56,000 borrowers in 23 states where allegations of forged documents and signatures and other similar problems are being used to try to overturn court-ordered evictions. Yet the impact may be much broader, given J.P. Morgan’s stature in the industry. If other banks adopt the same approach, the foreclosure process in many parts of the country will grind to a halt.
