PHILADELPHIA – The White House has hesitated to cast the midterm elections as a referendum on President Barack Obama, except when it comes to one key constituency: African-American voters.

As Obama has steadily increased his outreach to African American voters over the past month. With interviews and campaign stops targeted at the black community – “our community,” as the president likes to say – he has sent a clear signal that this election is about him and his record.

With black voters, Obama gets more personal

    And? So?

Politico: Vice President Biden mentioned Karl Rove’s name a half-dozen times at a fundraiser in Scranton, Pa., on Monday, charging that the GOP strategist is raising money from “shady sources” to attack Democrats.

“Karl Rove has his stable of billionaires, literally, and millionaires pouring tens of millions of dollars into close races,” Biden said at the event for Rep. Chris Carney in his hometown, according to the pool. “Does it surprise you that Karl Rove and his friends – Karl Rove, the architect of the policies that drove us into this ditch – are back raising tens of millions of dollars from shady sources, shady in the sense that we don’t know where the money is coming from?”

Biden told Rove to “tell us where that money is coming from,” and he filed a similar complaint against the Chamber of Commerce, a frequent critic of the Obama administration.

“I challenge the Chamber of Commerce to tell us how much of the money they’re investing is from foreign sources,” he said. “I challenge them. If I’m wrong, I will stand corrected. But show me, show me. Folks, they’re trying to buy this election to go back to exactly what they did before. Watch what happens in the next two and a half weeks, what happens here, because Chris is in a tight race and moving ahead.”

Biden said fundraising groups that don’t release the names of their donors don’t care about “the lives of middle-class Americans.”

  7. Rand Paul At Machine Gun Rally: ‘We’re Clinging To Our Guns, Our Religions And Our Ammunition’

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/11/rand-paul-guns-religion_n_758001.html

Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul appeared at a three-day Kentucky machine gun shoot and show over the weekend to rally support among the state’s gun owners.

“I don’t have to apologize for supporting the second amendment. I support it and will continue to support it no matter what the liberals say,” the Tea Party-backed Republican told a crowd of Second Amendment devotees, according to a report from The Daily Caller.

“The president says that you’re out here in the middle of the country clinging to your guns and ammunition. What I tell the President is, ‘We’re clinging to our guns, our religions and our ammunition,'” Paul continued.

The Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot takes place twice a year, and includes “four rounds of firing at a wide variety of appliances, vehicles, pyramids of tires, and barrels of fuel with pyrotechnic charges attached” that, when hit by gunfire create “large and small mushroom clouds and fire balls from hell!!”

Despite a poor year for gun control activists, who lost a landmark Supreme Court case that struck down a handgun ban in Chicago and opened other state firearms restrictions to legal scrutiny, Paul argued that gun owners are still at risk of having their right to bear arms infringed upon by Democrats.

We’re becoming a “Conservative White Trash” nation. We deserve Jerry Springer as a president along with White House wrestling hookers every Friday Night. Put a double truck trailer house in the White House backyard to accommodate the Saturday Night Congressional Party (Red Wing Booze Served). Don’t laugh … it’s becoming a distinct possibility. We’re the laughing stock of the world. Roll over Washington, Jefferson, et al, ye were gentlemen.

The 17th Amendment resurfaces as a campaign issue
    By Felicia Sonmez
At a recent town hall meeting, Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller (R) became the latest candidate to suggest that he’d be in favor of repealing the 17th Amendment, which calls for the direct election of senators.

Following a few days of “no comment” on the remarks — as well as charges by rivals Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) and Sitka Mayor Scott McAdams (D) that he is an extremist who wants to “repeal the 20th Century” — Miller appears to have distanced himself from the comment, saying in a statement that changing the Constitution is not a “practical solution” to the problems in Washington.

“If it weren’t for Senators like Lisa Murkowski, voters wouldn’t be talking about repealing the 17th amendment,” said Miller. “Voters are frustrated by the bailouts, cap & trade and the direction of our country. I share those frustrations and that is why I’m running for the U.S. Senate. Amending the constitution is not the practical solution to changing the problems in DC, changing the people who are there is.”

The Miller brouhaha is just one of several races where the 17th Amendment has cropped up as an issue — a rarity in just about any election cycle.

STOCKHOLM — Two Americans and a British-Cypriot economist won the 2010 Nobel economics prize Monday for developing a theory that helps explain why many people can remain unemployed despite a large number of job vacancies.

Federal Reserve board nominee Peter Diamond was honored along with Dale Mortensen and Christopher Pissarides with the 10 million Swedish kronor ($1.5 million) prize for their analysis of the obstacles that prevent buyers and sellers from efficiently pairing up in markets.

Diamond – a former mentor to current Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke – analyzed the foundations of so-called search markets, while Mortensen and Pissarides expanded the theory and applied it to the labor market.

Axelrod: Chamber must prove foreign money allegations false
By Walter Alarkon – 10/10/10 11:36 AM ET
White House senior adviser David Axelrod said the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has the burden of proving false the charge by Democrats that the business group is funneling foreign money to Republican campaigns.

Axelrod was pressed by CBS’ Bob Schieffer on Sunday for evidence that the foreign campaign contributions benefiting the GOP is more than “peanuts.”

“Do you have any evidence that it’s not, Bob?” Axelrod said on “Face the Nation.” “The fact is that the Chamber has asserted that, but they won’t release any information about where their campaign money is coming from. And that’s at the core of the problem.”

A new ad by the Democratic National Committee accuses the Chamber of “benefiting from secret foreign money” and said that the business group and Republican operatives are “stealing our democracy.”

Obama Ratchets Up Tone Against G.O.P.
    By PETER BAKER
    Published: October 10, 2010

PHILADELPHIA — With his party facing losses in next month’s election, President Obama pressed his argument Sunday that the opposition is trying to steal the election with secret special-interest money, possibly including money from foreign companies
In a speech to a large rally here(NOTICE THESE NEWS RAGS WON’T GIVE THE NUMBERS ON THE “LARGE CROWD” numbers but will gleefully post Beck’s ) and in a new television advertisement, Mr. Obama and the Democrats escalated their efforts to present the Republicans as captive to moneyed interests. But Republicans and their allies fired back, dismissing the assertions as desperate last-minute allegations with no evidence to back them up.
“You can’t let it happen,” Mr. Obama told thousands of supporters gathered at a school park in a predominantly African-American, working-class neighborhood in northern Philadelphia. “Don’t let them hijack your agenda. The American people deserve to know who’s trying to sway their elections, and you can’t stand by and let the special interests drown out the voices of the American people.”

Cable news chatter is changing the electoral landscape
By Howard Kurtz and Karen Tumulty
    Washington Post Staff Writers

When Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program, he read her some advice from another Fox commentator, Sarah Palin.

Palin, urging the Delaware Republican to “speak through Fox News,” had said on Twitter that she should be spending her time with voters back home “versus appeasing national media seeking your destruction.”

“She is absolutely right,” said O’Donnell, although she has held almost no public events since that television appearance last month.

In the same period, her Democratic opponent, Chris Coons, appeared on MSNBC, where host Chris Matthews asked him about the inexperienced O’Donnell: “Does it bother you personally that someone like her, with that background, should run for public office?” Coons said no, but the leading question hung in the air.
