House to Vote on Extending Cuts for Middle Class Only
Greg Sargent reports that the House will definitely have an up-or-down vote on extending the Bush tax cuts for middle-class voters only.
“The move indicates that House Dems are growing more resolved to draw a hard line on the Bush tax cuts, forcing Republicans to choose between supporting Obama’s tax plan and opposing a tax cut for the middle class. However, the way forward still remains murky. Even if such a measure were to pass in the House, it’s unclear whether the Senate will agree to such a vote, and the White House has not endorsed the approach.”

“President Obama and many lawmakers say they will work to cut the federal deficit, but a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey underscores the challenges they may face in taking specific steps that could help reduce the red ink.
Key findings: 57% said they were uncomfortable with gradually raising the Social Security retirement age to 69 over the next 60 years, 70% were uncomfortable with making cuts to Medicare, Social Security and defense in order to reduce the deficit, 60% said they were uncomfortable with increasing tax revenue through measures such as raising the gasoline tax, limiting tax deductions on many home mortgages and altering corporate taxation.
Said pollster Peter Hart: “Everybody wants to cut the deficit and cut the spending. But at the end of the day, everybody wants a choice that doesn’t affect their well-being.”

“A new Quinnipiac poll finds American voters think that the U.S. should not be involved in Afghanistan by a 50% to 44% margin — the first time a majority has opposed the war.
Key findings: Democrats opposed the war, 62% to 33%, while Republicans support it, 64% to 31%. Independent voters also oppose the war by a 54% to 40% margin.
Said pollster Peter Brown: “President Obama is in somewhat of a tenuous position politically on the Afghan war. If Republicans should desert him, he’d find himself with a very unpopular war on his hands.”

AZ boycott over immigration law sees mixed results

PHOENIX (AP) — A boycott brought on by Arizona’s controversial immigration crackdown raised the specter of vacant convention centers, desolate sports arenas and struggling businesses throughout the state.
Seven months later, the boycott’s effects are coming into focus, showing it has been a disruptive force but nowhere near as crippling as originally feared.
Businesses have lost lucrative contracts and conventions have relocated, performers called off concerts, and cities and counties in about a dozen states passed resolutions to avoid doing business with Arizona. A report released Thursday says the boycott has cost the state $141 million in lost meeting and convention business since Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signed the law in April.
But the state’s economy hasn’t come to a screeching halt – as some who organized the boycott hoped. In fact, more people went to the Grand Canyon this summer than last year, and more stayed in Arizona’s hotels and resorts, according to a review by The Associated Press.

Also, his fav/unfav crept up to 49%-39%, which is nearly identical to where it was in early May. And the percentage believing the economy will improve in the next 12 months (37%) is the highest since May (when 40% said that). Perhaps the biggest news in the poll as it relates to 2012: 60% say the worst of the recession is behind us, which is up 15 points from August.”

I’m sure that y’all have discussed James Carville’s comments today “that the POTUS needed to borrow one of Hillary’s balls”, but I wanted to add my two cents into this discussion that the POTUS needs to “man-up”:
I recall last year when the POTUS called a meeting of the Rethugs to ask for their input into the health care plan. How strong Obama was. How he told John McCain to STFU and the campaign was over. Obama is strong, but when he shows that strength it scares white people. So, its a damned if I do and damned if I don’t. In that meeting, I figured then that the POTUS was going to reap some backlash from being a strong black man in the room full of old white men. We will never know how much of the midterm vote was because of jobs/economy vs. their reaction to Obama when he is at his strongest. I have no doubt that he has “both balls” the question is, can old ass white men handle it when he uses them. (Hammercy!!)

Charlie Rangel censure recommended by ethics chief counsel

The House ethics committee on Thursday began deliberating what sanction to recommend against Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) after a public hearing in which he defended himself by conceding he made “mistakes” in violating House rules but insisted that he was not “corrupt” and did not seek personal gain.
In a final plea before the committee went behind closed doors to consider a prosecutor’s recommendation of censure, Rangel urged his fellow lawmakers Thursday afternoon to treat him fairly and to absolve him of corruption in their report to the full House.
“I leave the sanction to all of you as it relates to fairness,” Rangel said. “I just hope no matter what you decide in the sanctions that you put in that report that Charles Rangel never sought any personal gain.” Despite news media reports in his home city, “there’s no way to stretch this that I was a corrupted individual,” he said. “I never attempted to enrich myself.”

WASHINGTON—A poet and a painter, a baseball legend and a basketball giant, a German chancellor and an American president all found themselves named as recipients of the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
The medal is given from time to time by the president. Officially, it recognizes “especially meritorious contributions” across a wide range of endeavors: U.S. security or national interests, world peace and cultural pursuits among them.
