    Newly-elected Congresswoman Kathy Hochul, D-New York, was a terrific candidate, as good a contender as the Democratic Party could have asked for in the special election to fill the open congressional seat representing New York’s 26th congressional district.

    But Hochul did not stand a chance of winning a district so safely Republican that it backed John McCain for president in the 2008 election that saw the rest of the state back Barack Obama. In recent Congressional elections, Republicans have gained as much as 70 percent of the vote. New York’s 26th district backs Republicans by tradition and nature. And it was going to back Republican nominee Jane Corwin to fill the seat vacated by Republican Congressman Chris Lee after the married man got caught trolling for dates on the Internet.

    Democratic strategists in Washington weren’t even taking Hochul seriously when the campaign got going. It was Emily’s List and the Working Families Party, a union-backed grassroots party, that kept talking up Hochul—who ran on the third party’s ballot line, taking advantage of New York’s fusion law, which allows cross-endorsements.

    Then came Paul Ryan.

    Romney Fever! Catch It!

    Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan has a serious case of Romney Fever. In fact, he’s so utterly enthusiastic and supremely confident about the prospects of the Romney/Ryan campaign in November that he’s decided to remain on the ballot for his congressional seat.

    Ryan, of Janesville, can run both for vice president and for re-election to Congress thanks to a 1968 law that permits a candidate to be on the ballot twice, but only if he or she is running for president or vice president.

    Ryan faces Democrat Rob Zerban of Kenosha in November.

    Zerban has raised $1.2 million in his race. Ryan has raised $4.3 million as of July 25, according to the Federal Election Commission. Zerban is a former small businessman who sold his last business in 2008.

    Thanks, Mitt, for selecting me as your running mate. But if you don’t mind, I’m going to keep my day job — just in case. You understand, don’t you?

    Does Paul Ryan damage Romney’s chances in Fla?

    Does Paul Ryan on the GOP ticket do anything to help Mitt Romney win Florida?

    Consider some 2008 exit poll data:
    **Four years ago John McCain beat Barack Obama among Florida voters 65 and over by 8 percentage points.
    **Obama won women by 5 percentage points.
    **Obama won Hispanic voters by 15 points.
    **Obama won independent voters by 7 points.

    Except perhaps independent voters deeply troubled by the debt and deficit, it’s hard to see how an election that stands to be a referendum on the Ryan budget plan does anything to help Romney improve his Florida performance over McCain’s four years ago. Everything I’ve seen and heard, as well as the public polls, suggested Republican turnout would significantly improve over 2008, but perhaps Romney’s pollsters saw something we didn’t. The Ryan pick seems much more about energizing the conservative base than expanding it.

    So it appears that the Romney campaign briefed multiple news outlets about the behind the scenes of how they hid Paul Ryan’s selection from the media. I’m not saying this isn’t a story, but the way this is being rolled out is pretty ridiculous.

    All of these news outlets and several of their writers began tweeting out links to the story at midnight, which would indicate they were all under some kind of embargo. But they’re all basically telling the same story!

    I feel like these guys all decided to embrace their inner Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum while writing this fanfic.

    It’s also worth noting that with very few variations, this is the version of the story of how Romney selected Ryan that the campaign wants to be told.

    Oil Companies Failing to Adequately Disclose Drilling Risks to SEC and Investors

    As the drive for oil forces companies into increasingly risky environments, major oil companies are failing to disclose the risks associated with their endeavors, according to a group representing global investors.

    A new report released by Ceres found that ten of the world’s largest publicly-owned oil and gas companies failed to fully report risks associated with deep water drilling and climate change to the SEC or their investors.

    Of the ten companies, eight “provided minimal or no information about safety or environmental statistics,” or “investments in safety related R&D.” In fact, ExxonMobil received ratings of poor or no disclosure on 8 of 10 categories, only receiving a “Fair Disclosure” evaluation for corporate governance.

    Such poor disclosure practices should concern investors and the public as oil companies race to tap wells thousands of miles beneath the sea in the Gulf of Mexico and in the ice-covered Arctic Ocean.

    Despite the high risk of operating in the extreme and unpredictable environment, Royal Dutch Shell is preparing to drill exploratory wells off the coast of Alaska’s North Slope this summer. While drilling will occur in shallower water than the Gulf of Mexico, the harsh conditions — coupled with a stark absence of infrastructure throughout the region — would significantly complicate any major oil spill response effort. The area lacks roads, railroads, permanent Coast Guard facilities, and the nearest deep water port is over 1,000 miles away. Therefore, any cleanup resources not already on hand would have a difficult time responding quickly.

    Romney Campaign Examined Tax Returns Of Potential Veeps

    “Several” years required, Myers says. Romney has released just two years of returns.

    Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign requested “several” years of tax returns from potential vice presidential picks, senior adviser Beth Myers, who ran the search, told reporters Saturday.

    Myers said vetting documents were stored in safes in a secure room at campaign headquarters for review by attorneys.

    Asked what was inside the safes, Myers replied “tax documents, everything we used.”

    And how many years? “Several” she said, declining to provide a more specific number.

    Romney has found himself in on defense on the issue. His father, former Michigan Governor George Romney, began the voluntary practice of financial transparency when he volunteered to turn over, in his case, 12 years of tax returns to an inquisitive reporter in 1967. Mitt Romney reportedly provided 23 years of returns to John McCain’s vetters when he was up for the vice presidential nomination four years ago. He has said he fears that the Obama campaign and the media will distort the contents of any other returns he might release.

    BOSTON — More than 30 federal officers in an airport program intended to spot telltale mannerisms of potential terrorists say the operation has become a magnet for racial profiling, targeting not only Middle Easterners but also blacks, Hispanics and other minorities

    In interviews and internal complaints, officers from the Transportation Security Administration’s “behavior detection” program at Logan International Airport in Boston asserted that passengers who fit certain profiles — Hispanics traveling to Miami, for instance, or blacks wearing baseball caps backward — are much more likely to be stopped, searched and questioned for “suspicious” behavior.

    “They just pull aside anyone who they don’t like the way they look — if they are black and have expensive clothes or jewelry, or if they are Hispanic,” said one white officer, who along with four others spoke with The New York Times on the condition of anonymity.
