James Cooper: “I Fit The Description”

James CooperMy name is James Cooper aka (Coop), last week I was driving down MacArthur at 12 midnight to pick up my brother-in law from work, as I passed a police car traveling in the opposite direction, he suddenly made a u-tu…rn and got right behind me (I was doing 39mph on a 40mph street, all of my lights and blinkers were operating correctly, my tag and insurance were up to date and I had my seat belt on). Having been in this situation numerous times throughout my life, I casually grabbed my license and insurance and prepared myself to be pulled over, little did I know this wouldn’t be like the other times. The officer told me to put my hands out the car (I did), then told me to exit the vehicle (I did), when I got out I now saw 6 officers in defensive stances with 3 AR-15 assault rifles pointed at me, followed by 3 hand guns, I was told to walk backwards without looking back and I was handcuffed and placed in a squad car. One of the cops who was holding the AR15 was a rookie and the thought of me tripping and falling or a sudden loud noise scaring one of those men has woke me up out of my sleep 3 times so far. I was released 30min later with no tickets, no warnings but the air conditioning port in the back seat was ripped off and broken (they were searching for drugs or weapons). My name is James Cooper, I am a husband, father, poet, writer, law abiding citizen and I was racially profiled and my property was broken. IF…one of those officers made a mistake and shot me….do you REALLY think they would have admitted it? Or would this man with no criminal record and who has never owned or much less held a gun in his life, have been branded a criminal who shot at those officers, who then only used deadly force to protect themselves? My name is James Cooper and somehow I can’t shake the feeling that I was sparred another mans fate…..

  2. Black men on alert as Dorner search continues

SAN DIEGO – As the manhunt for suspected murderer Christopher Dorner continues, a police sergeant warns African American men of the reality of racial profiling.

“If you’re an African American man, you could be stopped and questioned,” said San Diego Black Police Officer Association President Sgt. Benjamin Kelso. “There are many people that may look like Chris Dorner, my self-included. If you are stopped and questioned its important to cooperate with officers.”

But the line between racial profiling and suspect profiling is gray.

“I got some friends who are large, black men, who have bald heads, who should be concerned,” said San Diego attorney Doug Oden.

He’s worried that as the pursuit for Dorner intensifies, drawing thousands of tips and potential sightings, more African American men could be racially targeted.

  3. Racial profiling is the use of an individual’s race or ethnicity by law enforcement personnel as a key factor in deciding whether to engage in enforcement (e.g. make a traffic stop or arrest).

  5. Young black men can’t even take a girl out on a date without being harassed by racist police b/c they’re driving a nice car. I’m tired of living in fear of my sons being gunned down by the police because they have black skin!

    Beyond Trayvon: Black and Unarmed

These 17 sad stories prove that it’s nothing new for a black man without a weapon to be killed.

The killing of unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood-watch captain who deemed him “suspicious” and claims that he shot the 17-year-old in self-defense has started a heartbreaking national conversation about race and justice. His story is all the more tragic because it follows a familiar pattern. The Root reviewed incidents in which black men and boys without weapons lost their lives to law-enforcement officers or others who decided that they were dangerous enough to die.

  7. This happens every day to black men in America. James Cooper is lucky. He lived to tell about it! Trayvon Martin, Sean Bell, Oscar Grant, Amadou Diallo, Ronald Madison, Timothy Stansbury, Ousmane Zongo, Patrick Dorismond, Aaron Campbell, James Brissette,& Travares McGill to name a few didn’t make it.

    Racial Profiling Must Stop!

  8. Ametia says:

Just bone-chilling, scary. It’s racial PROFILING, and you know this is what the LAPD is doing, has been doing since the dawn of time. Black men, beware. Your life is in jeopardy, better suit up.
