Kendrick Johnson was a 17-year-old boy from Valdosta, Georgia, whose death was ruled accidental. Take a look at this picture of him alive next to a picture of him dead and you be the judge. Many people suspect foul play, as his face appears to be beaten. The teen was found upside down in a rolled up mat inside the gym of Lowndes High School. Authorities states he fell into the center of the mats accidentally reaching for his shoe claiming he died because his blood rushed to his head after being in an upside down position for too long. Just hours after Kendrick’s death Sheriff Prine states “no foul play” but around April 9,2013 Sheriff Prine changed the status of “no foul play” to ” There is no way this went down the way the law officials are portraying. No family should have to deal with this lack of investigation” there is also another break in the case which comes from the coroner Bill Watson whom wasn’t called to the crime scene that was led by Sheriff Chris Prine until hours after the body was found. In January Bill Watson spoke to Valdosta Daily Times this is what he stated ” This was not fair to the decedent, his family, and the citizens of Valdosta and Lowndes County Ga. And it’s wrong as rain”. Lowndes High School will not release the footage of Kendrick last seen at school. The Johnson family wants reveal Kendrick’s death was no accident he was murdered, they want answers and justice.

MACON — U.S. Attorney Michael Moore has announced his resignation, leaving his review of the Kendrick Johnson case in the hands of federal attorneys in Ohio.
Moore announced to his staff this week he is leaving Nov. 23. He did not make any announcements concerning what he will be doing next, said Pamela Lightsey, public information officer for Moore’s office.
In October 2013, Moore opened a federal review of the death of Johnson, who was found upside down in a vertically stored gym mat at Lowndes High School in January 2013. A state autopsy ruled the 17-year-old’s death accidental. The Johnson family insists their son died of foul play.
The federal investigation is in its third year, and will now apparently be continued by the Northern District of Ohio. Moore is forwarding all media requests about the Johnson case to the Ohio office.
Moore was sworn in as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia in 2010 after his appointment by President Barack Obama.

The parents of Kendrick Johnson, the Georgia teen found dead inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in his high school gymnasium last January, have filed a lawsuit against a South Georgia school board claiming it failed to protect their son from bullying, harassment and discrimination, which they argue led to his death.
The lawsuit provides the first glimpse into what Johnson’s parents believe led to their son’s mysterious death. They say in the lawsuit that he was assaulted and that the injuries he sustained were “foreseeable” since the school was aware of a previous confrontation between Kendrick and another student a year prior. The Johnsons contend the school board failed to “properly investigate” the initial altercation or handle it in an “appropriate manner.”
The suit was filed Tuesday in Lowndes County Superior Court by Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson, on behalf of their son’s estate, against the Lowndes County Board of Education, as well as Superintendent Wes Taylor, Lowndes High School Principal Jay Floyd and Fred Wetherington, chairman of the school board.
The 17-year-old Johnson was found dead in the gymnasium of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, where he was a student, on January 11, 2013. Authorities initially called his death a freak accident, saying he fell head-first into an upright mat and became trapped. An autopsy conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) concurred.
The case was closed, but Johnson’s family insisted there was more to the story and had their son’s body exhumed for a second autopsy last summer. It was then that a private pathologist determined the teen died of blunt force trauma to the neck and that his organs were missing and his body had been stuffed with newspaper.
The lawsuit filed Tuesday claims that the school did not properly investigate an incident which took place approximately a year before Kendrick’s death and therefore failed to “properly supervise and protect [Kendrick] from further mistreatment and harassment, including, but not limited to, other assaults and fatal injuries.”
The lawsuit also alleges the school board violated Title IX by discriminating against Kendrick on the basis of race.

Atlanta (CNN) — A Lowndes County, Georgia, assistant district attorney has ordered a communications company to hand over Internet records after investigators received an anonymous e-mail claiming an ex-schoolmate reportedly confessed to killing Kendrick Johnson.
CNN obtained the e-mail and the subpoena on Monday, in response to a state Open Records Act request submitted to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
The anonymous e-mail tip is dated January 27. The sender of the e-mail does not suggest he or she personally witnessed a confession; instead, the sender claims to have been told information by somebody who purportedly was aware of a confession in the 2013 death by one of the people implicated in the e-mail.
Johnson’s body was found in a rolled-up mat in the Lowndes High School gymnasium on January 11, 2013. Investigators with the sheriff’s office ruled his death accidental, concluding that Johnson climbed into the center of the gym mat to reach for a shoe and got stuck.
According to an incident report provided to CNN by the sheriff’s office, investigators interviewed two of four students identified by name in the anonymous e-mail on January 28.
Both students acknowledged they knew the 17-year-old Johnson but denied any involvement in his death.
The incident report does not indicate whether the investigators attempted to speak with the two other students identified in the e-mail.
CNN is not naming the students mentioned in the e-mail because none of them has been named a suspect in the death of Johnson.
Lowndes County sheriff’s investigators concluded Johnson got stuck while reaching for a shoe at the center of the mat and that his death was accidental. The state’s medical examiner agreed, citing “positional asphyxia” as the cause of death.

Macon, Georgia (CNN) — Kendrick Johnson’s former schoolmates and their parents have been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury investigating the Georgia teen’s 2013 death, according to sources with knowledge of the subpoenas.
Among those seen entering the federal courthouse in Macon on Thursday were current students at Lowndes High School and current and former students at Valdosta High School, also located in Lowndes County.
Thursday’s development comes four months after the feds launched an investigation. Johnson’s parents have said the original probe was mishandled by local authorities. The FBI has interviewed several of Johnson’s former schoolmates, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.
Outside the federal courthouse Thursday, U.S. Attorney Michael Moore said, “We’re working methodically, and sometimes we remember we’re running a marathon instead of a sprint. So, we’re working on it. It’s better to get it right than to get it fast. I’m satisfied that the FBI is moving forward at the appropriate speed, and they’re doing a fine job.”

The complete list of those subpoenaed for Thursday’s grand jury proceeding was not clear, but Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine said he had not received a federal subpoena, and Lowndes County Schools said it was subpoenaed only to provide hard drives containing surveillance video from the school.
County Coroner Bill Watson said he hasn’t received a subpoena, either, though the FBI has interviewed him twice and he has spoken to the U.S. attorney. Johnson’s parents say they, too, spoke with the FBI during a three-hour interview in Thomasville, 40 miles west of Valdosta, in December.
Asked during a January interview if he found the feds’ involvement encouraging, Johnson’s father, Kenneth Johnson, said, “We really won’t feel anything until justice comes for Kendrick. We’re glad they’re here, but my feelings won’t be there until we get justice for our son.”
His wife, Jacquelyn Johnson, said the FBI interview left her hopeful.
“They answered a lot of questions about a lot of what we had heard,” she said. “I felt better because it’s another set of eyes looking into the case.”

Soon after Lori Taylor* and her younger sister, Noel found the body, Robbie O’Connor began tweeting.
“My class just found a dead person upside down in a girls competition mat.”
“Lies,” his friend, Chet Goode replied moments later.
NOTE: The names of all students under the age of 18 have been changed.
“Not funny dude. Kendrick Johnson we think,” O’Connor tweeted back.
“Wait, for real? That’s my friend! He have dreads?”
“Yea dude.”
Goode was understandably shaken.
“Dude, please tell me you [were] just kidding.”
“I’m not kidding,” O’Connor Tweeted. “It’s gonna be on the news.”
“Ok man, I believe you. I just can’t believe it! It’s crazy.”
“Yea, juss [sic] pray for him. He went missing like yesterday.”
Carrying a yellow notebook under his arm, Kendrick “KJ” Johnson had gone into the old gym at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia at approximately 1:35 PM on January 10, 2013. He never came out.
“I’ve talked to a few law enforcers that are closer to friends than they are the department, and KJ was lured into the gym for a fight,” Valdosta High School student Frank Walton later Tweeted. Further, Johnson’s family, “believe he was lured into the gym…by a ‘White girl'” the Daily Mail Online (UK) reported on November 4th of last year.
The next morning, the Taylor girls, whose father Wes Taylor is the Superintendent of the Lowndes County School System, discovered a pair of feet sticking up from the inside of one of the rolled up gym mats in the corner of the gym.
Along with O’Connor and others, they were in Coach Philip Pieplow’s second block “Life Sports” class. Mounting the bleachers, they had climbed on top of the mats to lie down. The Taylor girls looked down and made their discovery. Summoning help, another student and Pieplow mounted the bleachers and tried to free the person from the top.
According to the police report, when that effort failed, the student “and Pieplow began to move the mats by pulling them away,” until finally they got to the one in the rear with the person in it. While wrestling it to the wooden floor, someone called 911.
School resource officer Michael Adams quickly responded, arriving at 10:35AM.
“I observed a blue cheerleader mat. I observed two feet lying horizontal.”
Moving some more mats, he was finally able to unroll it enough to observe, “a Black male torso and head wearing white, exposed down to his rib cage. The facial area was severely disfigured and swollen.”
O’Connor, though, recognized KJ from his trademark dreadlocks and began his texting. As he and the rest of the class continued to watch, EMS personnel and sheriff’s detectives Lt. Stryde Jones and Sgt. Jack Winningham arrived. Instead of processing the crime scene as what police later admitted in a press release was a “possible homicide,” something contradictory to established investigative procedure allegedly occurred.
“The body was definitely moved, before I walked out [of] the gym [prior to noon]. He went by in a stretcher with paramedics,” O’Connor later tweeted on October 10, 2013, on what would have been KJ’s eighteenth birthday.
Yet the day the body was discovered on Jan. 11, at 3:45PM, when Lowndes County Coroner Wilbur (Bill) Watson, along with Deputy Coroner William Broadwell Carter, finally arrived to make the official pronunciation of death, the body was back in the gym.
Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine weighed in on the matter.
“I swear to you – no law-enforcement officer touched that body until the coroner got there and examined it,” Prine told the Valdosta Times on Sept. 6.
“Nothing was done with KJ’s body,” Lt. Stryde Jones assured the Daily Mail Online in the November 4 article. “He wasn’t moved. He wasn’t examined until the coroner [Bill Watson] arrived.”
But O’Connor’s tweet directly contradicts those statements, implying that the body was removed by Lowndes County officials and later brought back and placed back in the mat.
“I was with Bill when we went into the gym. I saw what he saw. The body was half in and half out of the gym mat,” Deputy Coroner Carter observed.
Multiple calls to Prine and Jones seeking comment have gone unreturned. But their statements to these media outlets and others are a matter of public record. The coroner himself contradicts the two police officers accounts and supports O’Connor’s.
“The investigative climate was very poor to worse when I arrived on the scene. The body had been noticeably (sic) moved. The scene had been compromised and there was no cooperation from law enforcement at the scene,” Watson said in his official report, also noting, “I was not notified in (sic) this death until 15:45 hours.”
According to Georgia Law § 45-16-24, “It shall be the duty of any law enforcement officer or other person having knowledge of such death to notify immediately the coroner or county medical examiner of the county in which the acts or events resulting in the death occurred or the body is found.”
“It took six hours before they called the coroner,” O’Connor Tweeted his friend Goode on October 10.
Watson tells EBONY.com exclusively, “I don’t think people realized the magnitude of this.”
Michael J. Moore, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, opened an official investigation into KJ’s death on Oct. 31 and dispatched FBI agents to Valdosta to investigate.
“There are four or five different agents in Lowndes County now,” says Deputy Coroner Carter, who has already been interviewed by two of them.
“I’m pleased the FBI took it,” he adds.
O’Connor will be interviewed by the FBI, as well as other students in Pieplow’s class. Last month, the FBI confiscated the hard drives of the school’s surveillance system, hoping to find footage of what exactly happened to the seventeen-year-old teenager after he entered the gym.
If the FBI subsequently finds that the body was moved or the crime scene compromised, Moore can prosecute on “Obstruction of Justice” charges, though he tells EBONY.com, “I cannot make any comments while we are still investigating.” But Moore’s record shows that when he does find local police corruption in his district, he doesn’t kid around.
On October 22, 2012, Moore announced that Stacy Bloodsworth, the former sheriff of Wilcox County, GA, pleaded guilty to assaulting an inmate inside the Wilcox County jail on July 23, 2009 and subsequently conspiring to cover up the assault. Bloodsworth’s son, Austin Bloodsworth, also pleaded guilty to conspiring to cover up the same assault.
“We expect our law enforcement officials to uphold the law – and to protect those they serve,” Moore said at the time. “Today’s guilty pleas by former Sheriff Bloodsworth and Austin Bloodsworth remind us that no one, not even an elected sheriff, is above the law.”
Time will tell if the same goes for Sheriff Pryne.

Two and a half months earlier on January 10, 2013, 17-year-old Kendrick “KJ” Johnson was found dead in a six foot high, rolled up wrestling mat at Lowndes County High School, in the school’s old gym in Valdosta Georgia. Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation claimed he fell into the mat accidentally and died from positional asphyxiation. This, despite the fact that the mat had a fourteen inch diameter, while Johnson’s shoulders measured nineteen inches across.
According to private coroner Dr. William Anderson who performed a second autopsy, that’s not what happened to Johnson. In his report dated August 15, 2013, he writes:
“Cause of Death: Blunt force trauma, right neck, involving right mandible [jaw] and soft tissues, including the area of the carotid body [artery] consistent with inflicted injury.
“NOTE: Unexplained, apparent, non-accidental blunt force trauma: Further investigation is indicated to determine the etiology [how it happened] of the injuries.”
Dr. Anderson believes Johnson was murdered by one blow, like a karate chop, that caused his heart to stop. So does Beau Webster, the private investigator who works for the late teen’s family. He later identified brothers Chris and Clark Martin, who are White, as possible suspects. They, along with other alleged suspects Webster has identified, are now being investigated by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Those agents are now on the ground in Valdosta, under the direction of Michael J. Moore, the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, who has opened a federal investigation into the case. Moore, who is known for his pursuit of justice, has promised to get to the truth.
“Sitting in my first block [class] looking at the chair KJ used to sit in,” Chris Martin tweeted on January 14, 2013, three days after KJ was found dead in the mat.
Three days after that, on January 17, Lowndes County sheriff’s detectives Ssgt Jack Winningham and Sgt. Michael Adams were interviewing students at Lowndes County High School. According to their report, “It was brought to Winningham’s attention [by students] that Johnson had been in an altercation on a school bus during a football game,” with Chris Martin.
According to Webster, Chris Martin had also fought Johnson a second time—and lost a second time. He was and is a minor. So the detectives then approached his father, Sam Martin, for permission to interview him. We have been able to has confirm that the elder Martin is an FBI agent. He refused to have his son interviewed by the sheriff’s detectives, instead referring them to his attorney.
That night, Clark, Chris’s older brother – also a minor at the time – tweeted this threatening missive.
“Who ever [sic] is talking all that shit about my little brother, they better watch where they step!”
As previously reported here, Det. John Marion followed up two weeks later on January 31, and got permission from either Sam Martin or his wife Susan to interview Clark and Chris. The police reports that EBONY.com has access to are redacted, so it is not clear which parent gave their permission.
“Clark Martin stated that he was in the twelfth grade and had second block gym. Clark stated he did not know Kendrick Johnson, and did not speak to him. Clark also stated that during his second block gym on January 10, 2013, he was in the weight room,” it says in the police report.
Clark Martin did know Johnson because he knew that he and his brother fought twice. Clark, however, did not account for his time during the fourth block, when Johnson went into the old gym for the final time.
Chris Martin had been present during his brother’s interview and listening carefully. He then volunteered the following information to the detectives.
“He [Chris] stated that he was in the tenth grade and had previously been in third block gym with Kendrick Johnson last semester.”
He said nothing about the fights the two boys had, nor what Beau Webster had discovered during his investigation, that he and Johnson had prior animus going back at least two years. Even more telling, Chris Martin clearly implied that he was not, then, in any classes with Johnson. So how could he tweet on January 14, “Sitting in my first block looking at the chair KJ used to sit in.”
How would Chris know that if he wasn’t in class with Kendrick Johnson? And if he was – the school’s class roster would prove this – why did he not tell the detectives? Further, Chris and Johnson were teammates on the school football team, which he also did not tell the detectives. According to the police narrative, Chris then gave a statement that was not included in the police files that we obtained.
Ah Ha! Father of possible suspects in the death of Kendrick Johnson is an FBI agent.

The family of Kendrick Johnson, the young man found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat in his high school gymnasium, believes the video surveillance footage that a judge ordered released to them has been tampered with, CNN reports.
CNN also obtained what they are calling a “scathing report” written by the coroner in the Johnson case, claiming the evidence at the crime scene was compromised and information for his investigation was withheld.
Authorities have claimed that the 17-year-old fell between mats trying to reach for a sneaker, but Johnson’s family suspects that the boy was murdered. The family continued to desperately search for answers.
According to lawyers for the family, the video footage released to them includes missing time codes, gaps and a mysteriously blurry and out-of-position camera that should have been able to pick up the exact spot where Johnson’s body was found some 10 months ago, CNN reports.
In one example used by the Johnson family attorney, Chevene King, and shown to CNN reporters, a man seen walking away from the gym late at night suddenly disappears while other images shot at different times show people walking in the same location.
Another example used by King include images from a camera that should have shown the exact location where Johnson’s body was discovered, but the image was blurry and out of position, he said and CNN reports.

(CNN) — In a scathing report recently obtained by CNN, the coroner in the case of a Georgia teen found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat blasted how the initial investigation was handled.
Authorities say Kendrick Johnson fell into the mat and suffocated while trying to retrieve a sneaker. His family suspects the 17-year-old was murdered and that someone has tried to cover up evidence in the case.
“I was not notifedi n (sic) this death until 15:45 hours. The investigative climate was very poor to worse when I arrived on the scene. The body had been noticably (sic) moved. The scene had been compromised and there was no cooperation from law enforcement at the scene. Furthermore the integrity of the evidence bag was compromised on January 13, 2013 by opening the sealed bag and exhibiting the dead body to his father,” wrote Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson in a report dated January 22.
“I do not approve of the manner this case was handled. Not only was the scene compromised, the body was moved. The integrrety (sic) was breached by opening a sealed body bag, information necessary for my lawful investigation was withheld,” he said.
The coroner’s death investigation report was obtained by CNN through an open records request directed at the coroner’s office.
A second coroner’s death investigation report was provided by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
The second report, which is not signed nor dated, is not nearly as critical as the first.
“I was not called by investigating officers regarding this death until the afore listed time of notification,” it read.
It was not immediately clear why there were two coroner’s reports. The inconsistencies between them were also not clear.
When contacted by CNN, a lawyer for the Lowndes County sheriff and the Lowndes County coroner declined to address specific questions about the reports.

Kenneth Johnson told MailOnline that he’s convinced that the death of his 17-year-old son Kendrick Johnson on January 11 was ‘planned’.
The shocking death of Kendrick in Lowndes County, Georgia was initially ruled accidental by the local sheriff’s office. But last Thursday – more than six months after his death and following huge pressure from the family and their supporters – U.S. Attorney for Middle Georgia Michael Moore agreed to hold a formal review of the case.
He said if he uncovers sufficient evidence to warrant a criminal civil rights investigation into the death he will ask the FBI to conduct it.
‘See, so much of this is the sheriff and the good ol’ boy system,’ Mr Johnson said. ‘But they ran up on the wrong family. They can’t put no fear in us and I’ve never been afraid of a man in my life.’
The 17-year-old’s body was found stuck in an upright mat that had been rolled up and propped upright behind bleachers in the school gym the morning after his parents had reported him missing.
The sheriff has said he believes Johnson became trapped trying to retrieve a shoe that fell into the center of the mat.
A Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner concluded that he died from positional asphyxia, meaning his body got stuck in a position in which he couldn’t breathe.
Johnson’s family had his body exhumed over the summer so they could get a second opinion from a private pathologist.
Dr. William R. Anderson issued a report in August saying he detected hemorrhaging on the right side of Johnson’s neck. He concluded the teenager died from blunt force trauma near his carotid artery and that the fatal blow appeared to be non-accidental.
Spurred on by last week’s developments – just a month after a civil rights investigation into the death was turned down by the Justice Department – Mr Johnson said: ‘Everyone who is involved in my son’s killing, everyone who is involved in the cover-up, they need to go to prison.’
Kendrick’s death has attracted national headlines because of the bizarre manner in which he was was found dead and the troubling questions raised by the family about the investigation.

(CBS) – The Georgia Secretary of State is investigating the funeral home that handled the remains of a Georgia teen found dead inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in his high school gym, according to a spokesperson for Secretary of State Brian Kemp.
Cody Whitlock said the office of the Secretary of State could not comment further due to its ongoing investigation into the Harrington Funeral Home in Valdosta, Ga. It is unclear when the probe began.
CBS News’ Crimesider left a message for the attorney for the funeral home on Monday but did not receive a response.
Authorities initially called Kendrick Johnson’s death a freak accident, saying he fell head-first into an upright gym mat and became trapped. The case was closed, but Johnson’s family insisted he was killed.
When a judge agreed to exhume Johnson’s body over the summer, a private pathologist not only determined he died of blunt force trauma to the neck, but also that his organs were missing and his body had been stuffed with newspaper.
How and why this happened is unclear, and a federal prosecutor announced last week that he is reopening the case.
Despite some media reports that only two entities had custody of Kendrick’s body after his death, Crimesider has confirmed at least four entities – the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), a third-party transport company, and the Harrington Funeral Home – handled the teen’s body.
Crimesider reached three of these entities and received some conflicting accounts. The company that transported Johnson’s body did not respond to multiple requests for an interview.
Harrington Funeral Home directed us to their attorney, Roy Copeland, who in turn referred us to a previously released statement on the case. In it, Copeland wrote that when the funeral home received Johnson’s body, the organs had already been removed.
The statement quotes Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson as saying: “In this case, the Viscera, which is the internal organs, were not sent back with the body for disposition. It was confirmed by Mr. Bryan, (a death investigator with the crime lab), who was present at the autopsy, that the viscera were disposed of due to decomposition of the same.'”
When contacted by Crimesider on Friday, coroner Watson first said he has no idea what happened to Johnson’s organs.

The body would be stored in a cooler there until the GBI was ready to receive it to conduct the autopsy.
Three days later, on Jan. 14, Johnson’s body was released again to Steve Owens for transport to the GBI in Macon, Ga., for the autopsy.
Sherry Lang, a spokesperson for the GBI, told Crimesider that after the autopsy was conducted, during which the organs were removed, the organs were returned to the body.
“When the body left the GBI, it had the organs with it,” Lang said.
The GBI released the body to Owens Transport, which then transported the body directly to the funeral home, according to William Carter, the Lowndes County Deputy Coroner.
Crimesider reached out to Steve Owens, of Owens Transport, and left several messages which were not returned.

Michael J. Moore, the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, has told EBONY.com that he will announce at 1PM EST today that he is opening an investigation into the Jan. 10, 2013 death of Kendrick Johnson at Valdosta County High School in Valdosta, Georgia.
Appointed in 2010 by President Barack Obama, Moore began reviewing the case this past summer at the initial request of Chevene King, Jr., counsel for Jackie and Kenneth, the parents of Kendrick Johnson. One casualty of the recent government shutdown was that because of it, Moore had to perform his office with a skeleton crew. He lost at least a full week to ten days of work because of it.
Now, Moore will be investigating Johnson’s death with the full weight of the Federal government behind him. He has repeatedly told EBONY.com that he will go anywhere and meet with anybody to get to the truth. In opening the investigation, his work now involves deducing the exact cause of the 17-year-old’s death, according to the available evidence.
If Moore then decides it is homicide, he will bring the case before a Federal grand jury and ask for indictments of the suspected parties.

It follows a closed door meeting Wednesday with attorneys and family members and is in response to an open records request.
Authorities say Kendrick Johnson, 17, was found on January 11, his body resting headfirst in a rolled wrestling mat.
A Georgia Bureau of Investigation autopsy found he died from positional asphyxia.
The sheriff’s office determined the death was accidental and declared the case closed.
But the Johnson family hired a private pathologist to conduct a second autopsy.
That autopsy found he had a blow to his neck “consistent with inflicted injury.”
So now the family is demanding a coroner’s inquest, arguing that conflicting autopsy reports require a second look by authorities.
They’ve also hired Benjamin Crump, the high-profile attorney who represented Trayvon Martin’s family.
The U.S. Justice Department said in September that it wouldn’t open a civil rights investigation.
But the U.S. attorney for the district that includes Valdosta is reviewing the case and weighing whether to open his own investigation.
I saw attorney Crump on the news this morning. A reporter also said that there are 40 cameras in and around that school and all the videos have been released to the parents and their attorneys.

What’s the reason for not releasing the surveillance videos? I don’t understand it.
@SG2. They are actually still photos and not video tape. The school’s reason for not releasing them is because they show students whose identity is private. That means that a court must decide whether or not to order the release. Since the sheriff has closed investigation, that leaves it to Kendrick’s parents to file a case in the court and request the release of the surveillance photos.

My head is spinning. A few things …
First, the blood on the door: If I were a parent with a child in that school, I would make efforts to file complaints that the school subjected my child to blood borne diseases. The thought that there was no custodian to notice that blood and that children were coming into that gym is sickening.
Second, at least one report says there was vomit in the mat. That would mean that Kendrick was still alive when put into it. Did the coroner determine how long he had been dead? That leads to thirdly …
Do I understand correctly that Kendrick didn’t return home that Friday, and his body was discovered that Monday? Without knowing how long Kendrick had been dead, there is possibility that he was taken from the gym. The fight could have started there, and he could have been taken out of the gym, beaten into a coma, and returned to the gym rolled into the mat that Sunday night or Monday morning before school. That also implicates someone at the school with after-hours access being involved. By finding his body in the gym in the mat, the initial coroner was able to develop the “accident” story.
Here is something else that puzzles me. A body dead for 3 days with blood and vomit present, but no one in the gym smelled anything? Just how clean is that gym for the students to be accustomed to foul odors?

@Yahtc. Thanks for the info. I went to the Ebony article and read again. I was mistaken thinking it was a Friday but Kendrick was last seen on a Thursday.
What does bother me is that the school has still shots of photos in the gym. They don’t want to release them on the basis that they are protecting the privacy of minors. How about they are protecting the identity of others present in that gym when Kendrick was there? If this isn’t a cover-up, I don’t know what is.

I just found out about this story and it is a dam shame that Kendrick was murdered. Look how his handsome face was beaten badly. Kendrick did not deserve to be treated like that. Someone in that school saw and know something. Sheriff Prine needs to be fired and locked up cause he know’s exactly what happen to Kendrick. How is it that Sheriff Prine think can murdered or know who murdered the Johnson son and get away with it. I can’t wait to the truth comes out cause it’s coming. SAVANNAH — The attorney who helped push for a criminal prosecution in Trayvon Martin’s shooting said Thursday that he’s joining the fight to reopen an investigation into the death of a Georgia teenager whose body was found inside a rolled-up wrestling mat at school.
The body of Kendrick Johnson, 17, was found Jan. 11 in south Georgia, and Lowndes County sheriff’s investigators concluded that he died in a freak accident — falling headfirst into an upright mat and becoming trapped. But Johnson’s family believes he was killed and has been pressuring authorities into taking a second look at the case.
Now the family has enlisted the help of Tallahassee, Fla.-based attorney Benjamin Crump. Best known as the lawyer who helped focus national attention on the February 2012 shooting death of Martin by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, Crump has pursued several civil rights cases against law enforcement agencies. He said Johnson’s parents came to him seeking help.
“This is a real-life murder mystery where these parents sent their child to school with a book bag and he was returned to them in a body bag,” Crump said in a phone interview. “They brought me in to make sure this is not able to be swept under the rug in small-town Georgia and they never get justice for their child.”
School officials found Johnson’s body in the gym after his parents reported him missing the night before. He was stuck upside down in the middle of a wrestling mat that had been rolled up and propped upright behind bleachers.
Sheriff Chris Prine has said he suspected Johnson became trapped while trying to retrieve a shoe that fell into the center of the large rolled mat. A Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner concluded that the youth died from positional asphyxia, his body stuck in a position in which he couldn’t breathe.
But the teen’s parents, Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson, hired Dr. William R. Anderson to provide a second opinion after a judge agreed in May to exhume the body. The private pathologist performed his own autopsy in June and presented a four-page report of his findings Aug. 15.
Anderson’s report said he detected hemorrhaging on the right side of Johnson’s neck. The pathologist concluded the teenager had died from blunt force trauma near his carotid artery and that the fatal blow appeared to be “non-accidental.”
GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang said the agency stands by its original findings.
“We have an excellent team of medical examiners, and we stand by them 100 percent,” Lang said.
Johnson’s family asked the Justice Department to get involved, arguing that authorities failed to investigate Johnson’s death thoroughly because he’s black. But the Justice Department found insufficient evidence to support an investigation. U.S. Attorney Michael Moore in Macon has been monitoring the case but has yet to announce whether he’ll take any further action. Moore did not immediately return a phone message Thursday.
Crump said the Johnson family’s legal team plans to focus on getting the official manner of death in the case changed from accidental to homicide. Asked how he planned to do that, Crump said, “We’re going to have to look at getting the courts involved.” He said it was too soon to be more specific.

What no one is saying is that the young man started dating the ex of the police cheifs grandson. They had altercations in the past. In addition after everything happened the grandson no longer attends school in the area. He was shipped off? I think the grandson attacked the young man they rolled him up in the mat. Valdosta, Georgia (CNN) — The death of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was awful enough for his parents. Then came the doubts about investigators’ conclusion that it was an accident.
But the discovery that their son’s body and skull had been stuffed with newspaper before burial added a horrific new dimension to their anguish and further fueled their skepticism of the official findings.
“We have been let down again,” his father, Kenneth Johnson, told CNN. “When we buried Kendrick, we thought we were burying Kendrick, not half of Kendrick.”
Kendrick Johnson was found dead in a gym at Lowndes County High School in January. State medical examiners concluded that the three-sport athlete suffocated after getting stuck in a rolled-up gym mat while reaching for a sneaker.
His parents, Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson, never have bought that explanation. They won a court order to have their son’s body exhumed and a second autopsy performed in June.
During an autopsy, internal organs are removed and examined before being returned for burial. But when Dr. Bill Anderson, the private pathologist who conducted the second autopsy, opened up the teen’s remains, the brain, heart, lungs, liver and other viscera were missing. Every organ from the pelvis to the skull was gone.
“I’m not sure at this point who did not return the organs to the body,” Anderson said. “But I know when we got the body, the organs were not there.”
Two entities had custody of Kendrick Johnson’s body after his death — the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which conducted the first autopsy in January; and the Harrington Funeral Home in Valdosta, which handled the teen’s embalming and burial.

(CNN) — Georgia teen Kendrick Johnson, who was found dead in a rolled-up gym mat at his high school in January, died as the result of “unexplained, apparent non-accidental, blunt force trauma,” according to a newly released, independent autopsy report.
The report, obtained exclusively Tuesday by CNN, directly contradicts the finding of an autopsy conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation that determined that Johnson’s death was the result of positional asphyxia. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office determined that his death was accidental.
Johnson, 17 and an athlete, was found January 11 headfirst in a rolled wrestling mat at a Lowndes County High School gym in Valdosta, Georgia.
Inconsistencies in official reports on the condition of Kendrick’s body have led the family and community to question the official cause of his death.
The family’s attorney, Chevene King, has sent the independent autopsy report to the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the U.S . Attorney for Georgia’s Middle District and Lowndes County Coroner for review.
The coroner can call a coroner’s inquest, a process that resembles a grand jury proceeding. After reviewing evidence and testimony, a jury would decide the cause of death, although the findings alone would have no civil or criminal consequences.
“Coroner’s inquests are not something you do every day. I cannot tell you the last time a coroner’s inquest was done in this office,” Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson said.
“I want to do the right thing by the people and the county and all concerned; I’m just not sure we have enough information. I’m not about to refute anybody’s findings because I’m not a doctor,” said Watson.
On May 1, a judge granted the Johnsons’ request to exhume their son’s body for the purposes of a conducting an independent autopsy at their expense.
That autopsy, conducted June 15, found blunt force trauma to the right neck and soft tissues, “consistent with inflicted injury.” It was conducted by Dr. William R. Anderson with Forensic Dimensions in Heathrow, Florida.
That finding supports the narrative of the initial patient care report, written by EMTs with the South Georgia Medical Center Mobile Healthcare Service on January 11, the day Johnson’s body was discovered. That report said, “bruising noted to the right side jaw.”

Today is the first I have heard of this tragic incident and hard to believe “an accident. ” I am a deliberate news watcher/listener (major news, Democracy Now, NPR) but until today did not see any coverage; let significant. However, a call to US Attorney General office appears a challenge in itself. To date, no clear conclusion or justice in the Treavon Martin death case. My prayers with the family and may closure to the questions how and why come expeditiously.

Valdosta, GA- The parents of Kendrick Johnson have sent a formal request to US Attorney General Eric Holder, asking the Department of Justice to take over the death investigation of the 17-year old.
The letter cites Sheriff Prine’s decision to deem the deal accidental as ‘premature,’ as it was made prior to any autopsy being performed. County Coroner Bill Watson is also quoted in the letter, as he stated that his investigation was ’100 percent compromised’ by the time he reached the scene at Lowndes High School.
Along with a number of civil rights groups, the parents are urging the Department of Justice to assume the investigation due to ‘concerns about the ‘objectivity and competency of those involved in this investigation,’ including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
They are asking for a speedy reply due to the fact that they believe once school lets out for the summer, potential witnesses could be lost and out of contact.
