Who Killed Kendrick Johnson
By kamoore35 | Posted April 12, 2013 | Valdosta, Georgia

Kendrick Johnson was a 17-year-old boy from Valdosta, Georgia, whose death was ruled accidental. Take a look at this picture of him alive next to a picture of him dead and you be the judge. Many people suspect foul play, as his face appears to be beaten. The teen was found upside down in a rolled up mat inside the gym of Lowndes High School. Authorities states he fell into the center of the mats accidentally reaching for his shoe claiming he died because his blood rushed to his head after being in an upside down position for too long. Just hours after Kendrick’s death Sheriff Prine states “no foul play” but around April 9,2013 Sheriff Prine changed the status of “no foul play” to ” There is no way this went down the way the law officials are portraying. No family should have to deal with this lack of investigation” there is also another break in the case which comes from the coroner Bill Watson whom wasn’t called to the crime scene that was led by Sheriff Chris Prine until hours after the body was found. In January Bill Watson spoke to Valdosta Daily Times this is what he stated ” This was not fair to the decedent, his family, and the citizens of Valdosta and Lowndes County Ga. And it’s wrong as rain”. Lowndes High School will not release the footage of Kendrick last seen at school. The Johnson family wants reveal Kendrick’s death was no accident he was murdered, they want answers and justice.

U.S. Attorney in KJ case resigns

MACON — U.S. Attorney Michael Moore has announced his resignation, leaving his review of the Kendrick Johnson case in the hands of federal attorneys in Ohio.

Moore announced to his staff this week he is leaving Nov. 23. He did not make any announcements concerning what he will be doing next, said Pamela Lightsey, public information officer for Moore’s office.

In October 2013, Moore opened a federal review of the death of Johnson, who was found upside down in a vertically stored gym mat at Lowndes High School in January 2013. A state autopsy ruled the 17-year-old’s death accidental. The Johnson family insists their son died of foul play.

The federal investigation is in its third year, and will now apparently be continued by the Northern District of Ohio. Moore is forwarding all media requests about the Johnson case to the Ohio office.

Moore was sworn in as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia in 2010 after his appointment by President Barack Obama.

  4. Suit: School dropped ball in Kendrick Johnson’s gym-mat death

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/suit-school-dropped-ball-in-kendrick-johnsons-gym-mat-death/

The parents of Kendrick Johnson, the Georgia teen found dead inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in his high school gymnasium last January, have filed a lawsuit against a South Georgia school board claiming it failed to protect their son from bullying, harassment and discrimination, which they argue led to his death.

The lawsuit provides the first glimpse into what Johnson’s parents believe led to their son’s mysterious death. They say in the lawsuit that he was assaulted and that the injuries he sustained were “foreseeable” since the school was aware of a previous confrontation between Kendrick and another student a year prior. The Johnsons contend the school board failed to “properly investigate” the initial altercation or handle it in an “appropriate manner.”

The suit was filed Tuesday in Lowndes County Superior Court by Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson, on behalf of their son’s estate, against the Lowndes County Board of Education, as well as Superintendent Wes Taylor, Lowndes High School Principal Jay Floyd and Fred Wetherington, chairman of the school board.

The 17-year-old Johnson was found dead in the gymnasium of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, where he was a student, on January 11, 2013. Authorities initially called his death a freak accident, saying he fell head-first into an upright mat and became trapped. An autopsy conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) concurred.

The case was closed, but Johnson’s family insisted there was more to the story and had their son’s body exhumed for a second autopsy last summer. It was then that a private pathologist determined the teen died of blunt force trauma to the neck and that his organs were missing and his body had been stuffed with newspaper.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday claims that the school did not properly investigate an incident which took place approximately a year before Kendrick’s death and therefore failed to “properly supervise and protect [Kendrick] from further mistreatment and harassment, including, but not limited to, other assaults and fatal injuries.”

The lawsuit also alleges the school board violated Title IX by discriminating against Kendrick on the basis of race.

  5. Local officials probe claim of confession in Kendrick Johnson gym-mat death

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/19/us/kendrick-johnson-death-probe-georgia/index.html?sr=sharebar_twitter

Atlanta (CNN) — A Lowndes County, Georgia, assistant district attorney has ordered a communications company to hand over Internet records after investigators received an anonymous e-mail claiming an ex-schoolmate reportedly confessed to killing Kendrick Johnson.

CNN obtained the e-mail and the subpoena on Monday, in response to a state Open Records Act request submitted to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

The anonymous e-mail tip is dated January 27. The sender of the e-mail does not suggest he or she personally witnessed a confession; instead, the sender claims to have been told information by somebody who purportedly was aware of a confession in the 2013 death by one of the people implicated in the e-mail.

Johnson’s body was found in a rolled-up mat in the Lowndes High School gymnasium on January 11, 2013. Investigators with the sheriff’s office ruled his death accidental, concluding that Johnson climbed into the center of the gym mat to reach for a shoe and got stuck.

According to an incident report provided to CNN by the sheriff’s office, investigators interviewed two of four students identified by name in the anonymous e-mail on January 28.

Both students acknowledged they knew the 17-year-old Johnson but denied any involvement in his death.

The incident report does not indicate whether the investigators attempted to speak with the two other students identified in the e-mail.

CNN is not naming the students mentioned in the e-mail because none of them has been named a suspect in the death of Johnson.

Lowndes County sheriff’s investigators concluded Johnson got stuck while reaching for a shoe at the center of the mat and that his death was accidental. The state’s medical examiner agreed, citing “positional asphyxia” as the cause of death.

  6. Feds subpoena Kendrick Johnson’s schoolmates amid probe into teen’s death

    http://us.cnn.com/2014/03/13/justice/kendrick-johnson-schoolmates-subpoena/index.html?sr=sharebar_twitter

Macon, Georgia (CNN) — Kendrick Johnson’s former schoolmates and their parents have been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury investigating the Georgia teen’s 2013 death, according to sources with knowledge of the subpoenas.

Among those seen entering the federal courthouse in Macon on Thursday were current students at Lowndes High School and current and former students at Valdosta High School, also located in Lowndes County.

Thursday’s development comes four months after the feds launched an investigation. Johnson’s parents have said the original probe was mishandled by local authorities. The FBI has interviewed several of Johnson’s former schoolmates, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

Outside the federal courthouse Thursday, U.S. Attorney Michael Moore said, “We’re working methodically, and sometimes we remember we’re running a marathon instead of a sprint. So, we’re working on it. It’s better to get it right than to get it fast. I’m satisfied that the FBI is moving forward at the appropriate speed, and they’re doing a fine job.”

Johnson’s body was found in a rolled-up mat in the Lowndes High School gymnasium on January 11, 2013. Investigators with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office ruled his death accidental, concluding that Johnson climbed into the center of the gym mat to reach for a shoe and got stuck.

State officials later concurred that Johnson’s death was accidental and listed his cause of death as “positional asphyxia,” or suffocation by his own body weight.

Johnson’s parents have called the official story a “coverup” and said they believe their son’s death was a homicide. A separate autopsy commissioned by the family attributed the 17-year-old’s death to “apparent non-accidental, blunt force trauma.”

The complete list of those subpoenaed for Thursday’s grand jury proceeding was not clear, but Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine said he had not received a federal subpoena, and Lowndes County Schools said it was subpoenaed only to provide hard drives containing surveillance video from the school.

County Coroner Bill Watson said he hasn’t received a subpoena, either, though the FBI has interviewed him twice and he has spoken to the U.S. attorney. Johnson’s parents say they, too, spoke with the FBI during a three-hour interview in Thomasville, 40 miles west of Valdosta, in December.

Asked during a January interview if he found the feds’ involvement encouraging, Johnson’s father, Kenneth Johnson, said, “We really won’t feel anything until justice comes for Kendrick. We’re glad they’re here, but my feelings won’t be there until we get justice for our son.”

His wife, Jacquelyn Johnson, said the FBI interview left her hopeful.

“They answered a lot of questions about a lot of what we had heard,” she said. “I felt better because it’s another set of eyes looking into the case.”

As the FBI and US Attorney’s office investigate the 17-year-old’s death, questions about a possible cover up persist

Soon after Lori Taylor* and her younger sister, Noel found the body, Robbie O’Connor began tweeting.

“My class just found a dead person upside down in a girls competition mat.”

“Lies,” his friend, Chet Goode replied moments later.

NOTE: The names of all students under the age of 18 have been changed.

“Not funny dude. Kendrick Johnson we think,” O’Connor tweeted back.

“Wait, for real? That’s my friend! He have dreads?”

    “Yea dude.”

    Goode was understandably shaken.

“Dude, please tell me you [were] just kidding.”

“I’m not kidding,” O’Connor Tweeted. “It’s gonna be on the news.”

“Ok man, I believe you. I just can’t believe it! It’s crazy.”

“Yea, juss [sic] pray for him. He went missing like yesterday.”

Carrying a yellow notebook under his arm, Kendrick “KJ” Johnson had gone into the old gym at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia at approximately 1:35 PM on January 10, 2013. He never came out.

“I’ve talked to a few law enforcers that are closer to friends than they are the department, and KJ was lured into the gym for a fight,” Valdosta High School student Frank Walton later Tweeted. Further, Johnson’s family, “believe he was lured into the gym…by a ‘White girl'” the Daily Mail Online (UK) reported on November 4th of last year.

The next morning, the Taylor girls, whose father Wes Taylor is the Superintendent of the Lowndes County School System, discovered a pair of feet sticking up from the inside of one of the rolled up gym mats in the corner of the gym.

Along with O’Connor and others, they were in Coach Philip Pieplow’s second block “Life Sports” class. Mounting the bleachers, they had climbed on top of the mats to lie down. The Taylor girls looked down and made their discovery. Summoning help, another student and Pieplow mounted the bleachers and tried to free the person from the top.

According to the police report, when that effort failed, the student “and Pieplow began to move the mats by pulling them away,” until finally they got to the one in the rear with the person in it. While wrestling it to the wooden floor, someone called 911.

School resource officer Michael Adams quickly responded, arriving at 10:35AM.

“I observed a blue cheerleader mat. I observed two feet lying horizontal.”

Moving some more mats, he was finally able to unroll it enough to observe, “a Black male torso and head wearing white, exposed down to his rib cage. The facial area was severely disfigured and swollen.”

O’Connor, though, recognized KJ from his trademark dreadlocks and began his texting. As he and the rest of the class continued to watch, EMS personnel and sheriff’s detectives Lt. Stryde Jones and Sgt. Jack Winningham arrived. Instead of processing the crime scene as what police later admitted in a press release was a “possible homicide,” something contradictory to established investigative procedure allegedly occurred.

“The body was definitely moved, before I walked out [of] the gym [prior to noon]. He went by in a stretcher with paramedics,” O’Connor later tweeted on October 10, 2013, on what would have been KJ’s eighteenth birthday.

Yet the day the body was discovered on Jan. 11, at 3:45PM, when Lowndes County Coroner Wilbur (Bill) Watson, along with Deputy Coroner William Broadwell Carter, finally arrived to make the official pronunciation of death, the body was back in the gym.

Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine weighed in on the matter.

“I swear to you – no law-enforcement officer touched that body until the coroner got there and examined it,” Prine told the Valdosta Times on Sept. 6.

“Nothing was done with KJ’s body,” Lt. Stryde Jones assured the Daily Mail Online in the November 4 article. “He wasn’t moved. He wasn’t examined until the coroner [Bill Watson] arrived.”

But O’Connor’s tweet directly contradicts those statements, implying that the body was removed by Lowndes County officials and later brought back and placed back in the mat.

“I was with Bill when we went into the gym. I saw what he saw. The body was half in and half out of the gym mat,” Deputy Coroner Carter observed.

Multiple calls to Prine and Jones seeking comment have gone unreturned. But their statements to these media outlets and others are a matter of public record. The coroner himself contradicts the two police officers accounts and supports O’Connor’s.

“The investigative climate was very poor to worse when I arrived on the scene. The body had been noticeably (sic) moved. The scene had been compromised and there was no cooperation from law enforcement at the scene,” Watson said in his official report, also noting, “I was not notified in (sic) this death until 15:45 hours.”

According to Georgia Law § 45-16-24, “It shall be the duty of any law enforcement officer or other person having knowledge of such death to notify immediately the coroner or county medical examiner of the county in which the acts or events resulting in the death occurred or the body is found.”

“It took six hours before they called the coroner,” O’Connor Tweeted his friend Goode on October 10.

Watson tells EBONY.com exclusively, “I don’t think people realized the magnitude of this.”

Michael J. Moore, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, opened an official investigation into KJ’s death on Oct. 31 and dispatched FBI agents to Valdosta to investigate.

“There are four or five different agents in Lowndes County now,” says Deputy Coroner Carter, who has already been interviewed by two of them.

“I’m pleased the FBI took it,” he adds.

O’Connor will be interviewed by the FBI, as well as other students in Pieplow’s class. Last month, the FBI confiscated the hard drives of the school’s surveillance system, hoping to find footage of what exactly happened to the seventeen-year-old teenager after he entered the gym.

If the FBI subsequently finds that the body was moved or the crime scene compromised, Moore can prosecute on “Obstruction of Justice” charges, though he tells EBONY.com, “I cannot make any comments while we are still investigating.” But Moore’s record shows that when he does find local police corruption in his district, he doesn’t kid around.

On October 22, 2012, Moore announced that Stacy Bloodsworth, the former sheriff of Wilcox County, GA, pleaded guilty to assaulting an inmate inside the Wilcox County jail on July 23, 2009 and subsequently conspiring to cover up the assault. Bloodsworth’s son, Austin Bloodsworth, also pleaded guilty to conspiring to cover up the same assault.

“We expect our law enforcement officials to uphold the law – and to protect those they serve,” Moore said at the time. “Today’s guilty pleas by former Sheriff Bloodsworth and Austin Bloodsworth remind us that no one, not even an elected sheriff, is above the law.”

Time will tell if the same goes for Sheriff Pryne.

Damn I wanna fight so many niggas,” Chris Martin* tweeted on March 21, 2013.

Two and a half months earlier on January 10, 2013, 17-year-old Kendrick “KJ” Johnson was found dead in a six foot high, rolled up wrestling mat at Lowndes County High School, in the school’s old gym in Valdosta Georgia. Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation claimed he fell into the mat accidentally and died from positional asphyxiation. This, despite the fact that the mat had a fourteen inch diameter, while Johnson’s shoulders measured nineteen inches across.

According to private coroner Dr. William Anderson who performed a second autopsy, that’s not what happened to Johnson. In his report dated August 15, 2013, he writes:

“Cause of Death: Blunt force trauma, right neck, involving right mandible [jaw] and soft tissues, including the area of the carotid body [artery] consistent with inflicted injury.

“NOTE: Unexplained, apparent, non-accidental blunt force trauma: Further investigation is indicated to determine the etiology [how it happened] of the injuries.”

Dr. Anderson believes Johnson was murdered by one blow, like a karate chop, that caused his heart to stop. So does Beau Webster, the private investigator who works for the late teen’s family. He later identified brothers Chris and Clark Martin, who are White, as possible suspects. They, along with other alleged suspects Webster has identified, are now being investigated by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Those agents are now on the ground in Valdosta, under the direction of Michael J. Moore, the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, who has opened a federal investigation into the case. Moore, who is known for his pursuit of justice, has promised to get to the truth.

“Sitting in my first block [class] looking at the chair KJ used to sit in,” Chris Martin tweeted on January 14, 2013, three days after KJ was found dead in the mat.

Three days after that, on January 17, Lowndes County sheriff’s detectives Ssgt Jack Winningham and Sgt. Michael Adams were interviewing students at Lowndes County High School. According to their report, “It was brought to Winningham’s attention [by students] that Johnson had been in an altercation on a school bus during a football game,” with Chris Martin.

According to Webster, Chris Martin had also fought Johnson a second time—and lost a second time. He was and is a minor. So the detectives then approached his father, Sam Martin, for permission to interview him. We have been able to has confirm that the elder Martin is an FBI agent. He refused to have his son interviewed by the sheriff’s detectives, instead referring them to his attorney.

That night, Clark, Chris’s older brother – also a minor at the time – tweeted this threatening missive.

“Who ever [sic] is talking all that shit about my little brother, they better watch where they step!”

As previously reported here, Det. John Marion followed up two weeks later on January 31, and got permission from either Sam Martin or his wife Susan to interview Clark and Chris. The police reports that EBONY.com has access to are redacted, so it is not clear which parent gave their permission.

“Clark Martin stated that he was in the twelfth grade and had second block gym. Clark stated he did not know Kendrick Johnson, and did not speak to him. Clark also stated that during his second block gym on January 10, 2013, he was in the weight room,” it says in the police report.

Clark Martin did know Johnson because he knew that he and his brother fought twice. Clark, however, did not account for his time during the fourth block, when Johnson went into the old gym for the final time.

Chris Martin had been present during his brother’s interview and listening carefully. He then volunteered the following information to the detectives.

“He [Chris] stated that he was in the tenth grade and had previously been in third block gym with Kendrick Johnson last semester.”

He said nothing about the fights the two boys had, nor what Beau Webster had discovered during his investigation, that he and Johnson had prior animus going back at least two years. Even more telling, Chris Martin clearly implied that he was not, then, in any classes with Johnson. So how could he tweet on January 14, “Sitting in my first block looking at the chair KJ used to sit in.”

How would Chris know that if he wasn’t in class with Kendrick Johnson? And if he was – the school’s class roster would prove this – why did he not tell the detectives? Further, Chris and Johnson were teammates on the school football team, which he also did not tell the detectives. According to the police narrative, Chris then gave a statement that was not included in the police files that we obtained.

  21. Evidence Tampering in Kendrick Johnson Case?

    http://www.theroot.com/articles/culture/2013/11/evidence_tampering_in_kendrick_johnson_case.html

Family believes that video footage was altered, and a “scathing” coroner’s report expresses concern over compromised evidence.

The family of Kendrick Johnson, the young man found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat in his high school gymnasium, believes the video surveillance footage that a judge ordered released to them has been tampered with, CNN reports.

CNN also obtained what they are calling a “scathing report” written by the coroner in the Johnson case, claiming the evidence at the crime scene was compromised and information for his investigation was withheld.

Authorities have claimed that the 17-year-old fell between mats trying to reach for a sneaker, but Johnson’s family suspects that the boy was murdered. The family continued to desperately search for answers.

According to lawyers for the family, the video footage released to them includes missing time codes, gaps and a mysteriously blurry and out-of-position camera that should have been able to pick up the exact spot where Johnson’s body was found some 10 months ago, CNN reports.

In one example used by the Johnson family attorney, Chevene King, and shown to CNN reporters, a man seen walking away from the gym late at night suddenly disappears while other images shot at different times show people walking in the same location.

Another example used by King include images from a camera that should have shown the exact location where Johnson’s body was discovered, but the image was blurry and out of position, he said and CNN reports.

  22. Coroner slams handling of Kendrick Johnson case

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/07/justice/georgia-gym-mat-death/

(CNN) — In a scathing report recently obtained by CNN, the coroner in the case of a Georgia teen found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat blasted how the initial investigation was handled.

Authorities say Kendrick Johnson fell into the mat and suffocated while trying to retrieve a sneaker. His family suspects the 17-year-old was murdered and that someone has tried to cover up evidence in the case.

“I was not notifedi n (sic) this death until 15:45 hours. The investigative climate was very poor to worse when I arrived on the scene. The body had been noticably (sic) moved. The scene had been compromised and there was no cooperation from law enforcement at the scene. Furthermore the integrity of the evidence bag was compromised on January 13, 2013 by opening the sealed bag and exhibiting the dead body to his father,” wrote Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson in a report dated January 22.

“I do not approve of the manner this case was handled. Not only was the scene compromised, the body was moved. The integrrety (sic) was breached by opening a sealed body bag, information necessary for my lawful investigation was withheld,” he said.

The coroner’s death investigation report was obtained by CNN through an open records request directed at the coroner’s office.

A second coroner’s death investigation report was provided by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

The second report, which is not signed nor dated, is not nearly as critical as the first.

“I was not called by investigating officers regarding this death until the afore listed time of notification,” it read.

It was not immediately clear why there were two coroner’s reports. The inconsistencies between them were also not clear.

When contacted by CNN, a lawyer for the Lowndes County sheriff and the Lowndes County coroner declined to address specific questions about the reports.

Back in the school’s gym, Coach Philip Pieplow’s “Life Sports” class was then in progress. Vicki Darnell* and her sister Emily were tired, so they climbed up on the wrestling mats that were rolled up in the corner to lie down. After being up there for a few minutes, Vicki looked down, into one of the mats, and saw feet with socks on them. She figured someone was playing a joke. She asked her sister Emily to take a look.
      She did.

      “Help,” Emily yelled, “help!”

John Clendenon, who was in the class and nearby, came over, climbed the bleachers, followed Emily and Vicki over to the mat in question, looked inside, then summoned Mr. Pieplow to come over. Pieplow climbed on top of the mats. He and Clendenon tried to free the person from the top.

When their efforts failed, they began to move the mats aside, then lowered the one with the person inside it. With an unobstructed view, Pieplow looked inside.

Students were staring. A girl screamed.

      “That was a dead body!”

Upset, Peiplow was having a hard time speaking, but he was able to tell the students to leave.

Shortly before 10:30 AM, the sheriff’s office received a “911″ cell phone call from John Clendenon, the student who had discovered a body. The dispatcher relayed the information to Sgt. Adams, that a “code blue” had been received from the old gym at Lowndes High School.

      AND

Philip Pieplow was still bending over the immobile figure in the mat.

“I don’t think anybody can help him,” Peiplow said quietly.

Two, white socked feet were sticking out of the blue mat. Sticking out of the other end, “I observed a black male, exposed down to his rib cage. The facial area was severely disfigured and swollen. The only identifying feature to the victim that I observed was the long dreadlocks,” Adams related to his superiors.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2487262/EXCLUSIVE-Father-boy-17-mysteriously-died-rolled-gym-mat-claims-bullied-boy.html

In an interview with MailOnline, the family of Kendrick Johnson, 17, found dead in a rolled up gym mat at his high school, reveal he had a serious confrontation with a football teammate

Sheriff in Lowndes County, Georgia, confirmed the incident was investigated but told MailOnline they found no evidence the boy was linked to his death

Sheriff ruled his death was accidental but now federal prosecutor has agreed to review the evidence in the case

His father, Kenneth, reveals claims the older white boy felt humiliated for being ‘whooped’ by Kendrick in front of classmates after football game

The family of the promising black teenager who was mysteriously found dead stuffed in a wrestling mat in a high school gym today claims his son was bullied by another boy after they had a fight on a school bus.

Kenneth Johnson told MailOnline that he’s convinced that the death of his 17-year-old son Kendrick Johnson on January 11 was ‘planned’.

The shocking death of Kendrick in Lowndes County, Georgia was initially ruled accidental by the local sheriff’s office. But last Thursday – more than six months after his death and following huge pressure from the family and their supporters – U.S. Attorney for Middle Georgia Michael Moore agreed to hold a formal review of the case.

He said if he uncovers sufficient evidence to warrant a criminal civil rights investigation into the death he will ask the FBI to conduct it.

‘See, so much of this is the sheriff and the good ol’ boy system,’ Mr Johnson said. ‘But they ran up on the wrong family. They can’t put no fear in us and I’ve never been afraid of a man in my life.’

The 17-year-old’s body was found stuck in an upright mat that had been rolled up and propped upright behind bleachers in the school gym the morning after his parents had reported him missing.

The sheriff has said he believes Johnson became trapped trying to retrieve a shoe that fell into the center of the mat.

A Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner concluded that he died from positional asphyxia, meaning his body got stuck in a position in which he couldn’t breathe.

Johnson’s family had his body exhumed over the summer so they could get a second opinion from a private pathologist.

Dr. William R. Anderson issued a report in August saying he detected hemorrhaging on the right side of Johnson’s neck. He concluded the teenager died from blunt force trauma near his carotid artery and that the fatal blow appeared to be non-accidental.

Spurred on by last week’s developments – just a month after a civil rights investigation into the death was turned down by the Justice Department – Mr Johnson said: ‘Everyone who is involved in my son’s killing, everyone who is involved in the cover-up, they need to go to prison.’

Kendrick’s death has attracted national headlines because of the bizarre manner in which he was was found dead and the troubling questions raised by the family about the investigation.

Now MailOnline can reveal that Kendrick was involved in an incident with a football team mate in 2011 which involved the police.

In yet another shocking twist in the mysterious death of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson, a friend of the Georgia teen is revealing some important information that could lead investigators to the truth.

Soloman Arrington, 16, told the Daily Mail that he received Facebook threats just hours after he learned that his best friend was dead.

Moore reported the message to a detective from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, but she said he quickly downplayed any connection.

In fact, Lt. Stryde Jones told the Daily Mail that authorities were aware of the comments made to Soloman and possibly others, insisting they were taken seriously and investigated.

If you recall, Kendrick was found rolled up in a body bag of sorts — a gym mat — and investigators initially ruled his death an accident. But at the family’s request, Kendrick’s body was exhumed in May of 2013 and the shocking truth about what happened that day came to light.

The medical examiner confirmed that Kendrick’s death was not an accident. He was killed by a blow to the neck.

Now, CCTV footage taken from inside the gym where his body was found will be released, following pressure from the boy’s family.

  28. Kendrick Johnson Update: Ga. Sec. of State investigating funeral home that handled teen’s remains after gym-mat death.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57610769-504083/kendrick-johnson-update-ga-sec-of-state-investigating-funeral-home-that-handled-teens-remains-after-gym-mat-death/

(CBS) – The Georgia Secretary of State is investigating the funeral home that handled the remains of a Georgia teen found dead inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in his high school gym, according to a spokesperson for Secretary of State Brian Kemp.

Cody Whitlock said the office of the Secretary of State could not comment further due to its ongoing investigation into the Harrington Funeral Home in Valdosta, Ga. It is unclear when the probe began.

CBS News’ Crimesider left a message for the attorney for the funeral home on Monday but did not receive a response.

Authorities initially called Kendrick Johnson’s death a freak accident, saying he fell head-first into an upright gym mat and became trapped. The case was closed, but Johnson’s family insisted he was killed.

When a judge agreed to exhume Johnson’s body over the summer, a private pathologist not only determined he died of blunt force trauma to the neck, but also that his organs were missing and his body had been stuffed with newspaper.

How and why this happened is unclear, and a federal prosecutor announced last week that he is reopening the case.

Despite some media reports that only two entities had custody of Kendrick’s body after his death, Crimesider has confirmed at least four entities – the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), a third-party transport company, and the Harrington Funeral Home – handled the teen’s body.

Crimesider reached three of these entities and received some conflicting accounts. The company that transported Johnson’s body did not respond to multiple requests for an interview.

Harrington Funeral Home directed us to their attorney, Roy Copeland, who in turn referred us to a previously released statement on the case. In it, Copeland wrote that when the funeral home received Johnson’s body, the organs had already been removed.

The statement quotes Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson as saying: “In this case, the Viscera, which is the internal organs, were not sent back with the body for disposition. It was confirmed by Mr. Bryan, (a death investigator with the crime lab), who was present at the autopsy, that the viscera were disposed of due to decomposition of the same.'”

When contacted by Crimesider on Friday, coroner Watson first said he has no idea what happened to Johnson’s organs.

  29. Kendrick Johnson Update: Conflicting accounts of what happened to Ga. teen’s organs after gym-mat death.

(CBS) – On January 11, 2013, 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was found dead inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in his Valdosta, Ga. high school gym. Authorities called his death a freak accident, saying he fell head-first into an upright mat and became trapped. The case was closed, but Johnson’s family insists he was killed. A federal prosecutor has announced he is reopening the case.

But the mystery of how Johnson died is only one part of this bizarre story.

When a judge agreed to exhume Johnson’s body over the summer, a private pathologist not only determined he died of blunt force trauma to his neck, but also that his organs were missing and his body had been stuffed with newspaper. How and why did this happen? Who is responsible? And could the strange state of the body affect further investigation of Johnson’s death? It turns out, the answers to these questions are far from clear.

Despite some media reports that only two entities had custody of Kendrick’s body after his death, CBS News’ Crimesider has confirmed at least four entities – the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), a third-party transport company, and the Harrington Funeral Home – handled the teen’s body.

On Jan. 11, the day the body was found, Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson contacted Steve Owens from Owens Transport Company to conduct the removal and transport of Johnson’s body to the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory, according to recently unsealed files pertaining to the investigation. The body would be stored in a cooler there until the GBI was ready to receive it to conduct the autopsy.

Three days later, on Jan. 14, Johnson’s body was released again to Steve Owens for transport to the GBI in Macon, Ga., for the autopsy.

Sherry Lang, a spokesperson for the GBI, told Crimesider that after the autopsy was conducted, during which the organs were removed, the organs were returned to the body.

“When the body left the GBI, it had the organs with it,” Lang said.

The GBI released the body to Owens Transport, which then transported the body directly to the funeral home, according to William Carter, the Lowndes County Deputy Coroner.

Crimesider reached out to Steve Owens, of Owens Transport, and left several messages which were not returned.

  30. Judge to decide on coroner’s inquest in Kendrick Johnson case

    http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/local/article/333919/3/Judge-to-decide-on-coroners-inquest-in-Kendrick-Johnson-case

A judge will decide Monday if there will be a coroner’s inquest in the death of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson.

The Valdosta teen’s body was found inside a rolled-up wrestling mat at his high school in January.

Johnson’s parents asked for the inquest last month after a south Georgia coroner refused to reopen the case.

Johnson’s death was originally ruled an accidental asphyxiation, but a second autopsy ordered by the teen’s parents determined he’d been killed by blunt force trauma to the neck.

When Johnson’s body was exhumed for the second autopsy, investigators discovered his organs were missing and the remains were stuffed with newspaper. Neither the coroner’s office nor the funeral home that prepared the body for burial admitted to taking the organs.

Last week, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia announced he plans to investigate Johnson’s death.

Michael J. Moore, the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, has told EBONY.com that he will announce at 1PM EST today that he is opening an investigation into the Jan. 10, 2013 death of Kendrick Johnson at Valdosta County High School in Valdosta, Georgia.

Appointed in 2010 by President Barack Obama, Moore began reviewing the case this past summer at the initial request of Chevene King, Jr., counsel for Jackie and Kenneth, the parents of Kendrick Johnson. One casualty of the recent government shutdown was that because of it, Moore had to perform his office with a skeleton crew. He lost at least a full week to ten days of work because of it.

Now, Moore will be investigating Johnson’s death with the full weight of the Federal government behind him. He has repeatedly told EBONY.com that he will go anywhere and meet with anybody to get to the truth. In opening the investigation, his work now involves deducing the exact cause of the 17-year-old’s death, according to the available evidence.

If Moore then decides it is homicide, he will bring the case before a Federal grand jury and ask for indictments of the suspected parties.

    http://www.wafb.com/story/23830568/teen-death-judge-orders-release-of-full-investigative-file

VALDOSTA, GA (CNN) – A judge ordered the public release of the full investigative file on the death of a Georgia teen found dead at his high school – including photographs and surveillance video.

It follows a closed door meeting Wednesday with attorneys and family members and is in response to an open records request.

Authorities say Kendrick Johnson, 17, was found on January 11, his body resting headfirst in a rolled wrestling mat.

A Georgia Bureau of Investigation autopsy found he died from positional asphyxia.

The sheriff’s office determined the death was accidental and declared the case closed.

But the Johnson family hired a private pathologist to conduct a second autopsy.

That autopsy found he had a blow to his neck “consistent with inflicted injury.”

So now the family is demanding a coroner’s inquest, arguing that conflicting autopsy reports require a second look by authorities.

They’ve also hired Benjamin Crump, the high-profile attorney who represented Trayvon Martin’s family.

The U.S. Justice Department said in September that it wouldn’t open a civil rights investigation.

But the U.S. attorney for the district that includes Valdosta is reviewing the case and weighing whether to open his own investigation.

    Posted: Oct 18, 2013 11:38 PM EDT

LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (CNN) – New information as surfaced in the case of the Georgia teen found dead in a rolled-up gym at school.

Investigators previously released surveillance video showing 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson – apparently alone – inside the school gymnasium on the day his body was later found.
Now school officials say other students were also in the area that day.

An attorney for the school tells CNN that additional surveillance video shows other students in the gym around the time Kendrick walked in.

The video is not being given to the media because officials don’t have consent for the additional minors seen in it.

Whether or not this new information will have any bearing on investigators’ previous finding that Kendrick’s death was an accident remains to be seen.

“Reward offered in Kendrick Johnson case”

    VALDOSTA, GA (WALB)

The Valdosta-Lowndes County Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Council is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction in the death of Lowndes High student Kendrick Johnson.

Pastor Floyd Rose says the money has been put by an anonymous donor.

The reward is for the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for Kendrick’s death.

Rose says the Valdosta Lowndes county S-C-L-C chapter has not taken a position on whether Johnson was murdered or his death was an accident.

Rose says if no one has claimed the reward in 90 days, the money will be returned to the donor.

Kendrick Johnson’s body was found inside a wrestling at Lowndes High in January of this year.

The G.B.I. has ruled his death an accident based on the autopsy.

The family had a second autopsy done by a forensic doctor in Florida who concluded Johnson’s death was due to non-accidental blunt force trauma.

I am a student at Lowndes high. I was friends with KJ. When he was found the corner was not called to the scene. The administrative staff will not let any info out to the students or family. They are hiding something. Why else would the video footage not be allowed to be seen?

And why are they getting the old gym( where the “accident” occurred) tore down. Many other things don’t add up to be “just an accident”.

I am a white female. I am no where near racist and neither is his family and friends. We all (black, white, Mexican, girl, boy, woman, man…) WE ALL WANT JUSTICE! This isn’t a matter of race this is a matter of authorities thinking they can hide information from others and get away with it. This is about a family not getting the answers they need to properly grieve the death of their son. This is about the fact no one in power can be trusted. This is not about race. NO JUSTICE NO PEACE.

I just didn’t base my theory as to what happened off that 1 article. I’ve been reading several articles on this case and about the city. Some of the things I found I posted to support what i was saying. 30 people have died in the Lowndes county jail since 1997. Other deaths were ruled suicides. Family of these people believe they were killed due to a number of reasons that could have been prevented. Some people believe their family members were murdered by police in that jail. I posted a link to a video where a guy was talking about how badly he was treated in that jail. No one was ever charged with any deaths in that jail. A Street there is named plantation drive, A couple other places have the name plantation in them too. The African American community wants them changed but the city won’t change them. There is a park there named after a slave owner and African Americans have complained about it yet the city still won’t change the name. smh Racism is alive and well in that community.

Also Kendrick Johnson’s friends think they know who killed him.

They said the night before he went missing that Kendrick was involved in a altercation with the sheriff’s son. They think the sheriff’s son has something to do with it and that is why the sheriff did the autopsy his self to cover up for his son.

The sheriff said there was no signs of struggle or no cuts or bruises. The photo’s of Kendrick’s body show he has bruises and lacerations on his body. How did the sheriff miss them?

So when I say I feel like the sheriff is covering his death up that is why I come to that conclusion. Is it about race? maybe but it could be about anything. The facts do show that the Sheriff broke the law when he didn’t call the coroner to do the autopsy and that’s a fact! The sheriff did a few things wrong in this case besides that too and that’s is a fact!

The 17-year-old student-athlete was found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School in Valdosta earlier this year.

Kendrick’s parents and their attorney C.B. King spoke exclusively to 11Alive News Monday morning. Contrary to the investigation, they believe the teen’s death was no accident.

……..a second autopsy ordered by Kendrick’s parents determined he was killed by blunt force trauma to the neck. Attorney King said an EMT at the scene noticed a neck injury on the teen’s body.

“We’ve got a wealth of evidence that requires that this case be reopened,” King said.

    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9626413/the-mysterious-death-17-year-old-football-player-valdosta-georgia

    Two Excerpts:

Kendrick Lamar Johnson was 17 and muscled and often quiet. He was 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds — an undersize power forward, a seamless hurdler, and a safety who hit like a linebacker. His favorite hamburger came from a truck stop down I-75, just on the other side of Wildwood. He rarely started fights, but when provoked he ended them. His favorite college football team depended on when he was asked: Some days it was Florida, other days Ohio State, and every now and then he’d say he favored UNLV. He hoped to someday learn to grill as well as his father, to win state, and to go to college. He would do none of those things. We know that on the morning of Thursday, January 10, he arrived at Lowndes High School wearing three layers of shirts — a white tank top, an orange T-shirt, and a white T-shirt — as well as a belt, jeans, black gym shorts, and boxers. Somewhere on him, he had a Starburst wrapper. We know this from the initial autopsy report, though that document’s assertions have now been called into question.

We know he attended classes that day. We know he talked with friends. And we know that at 1:09 p.m., he walked into the school gymnasium.

Exactly what happened next — that’s unclear.

    And

The Lowndes County sheriff’s department has declined to discuss the case with Grantland. On behalf of all school officials, assistant superintendent Troy Davis has offered “no comment.” This account of what happened on the morning of January 11 comes from the sheriff department’s incident report, which was acquired through an open records request.

Lowndes High head athletic trainer Philip Pieplow handed out surveys to the students in his Life Sports class that morning. After completing the survey, a girl climbed on top of a set of blue cheerleading mats, which were rolled up and standing vertically in a corner of the gym. Inside one of the mats, she saw two feet. Panicked, she called friends to come and see. They looked at the white socks with gray toes, “Hanes” written across them in red lettering. Someone screamed.

Pieplow sprinted across the room. When he pushed the mats onto their sides, a black male’s body from the waist up tumbled out of one of them, along with blood and dreadlocks and vomit. Pieplow backed away. Another coach told the students to leave the gym. Someone — several people — called 911.

At 10:35 a.m., officers from the sheriff’s department arrived. Soon, more followed. They canvassed the scene and began taking photos. They interviewed students who had been in the gym when the body was discovered. Late in the afternoon, officers called Lowndes County coroner Bill Watson. By the time he arrived, rigor and livor mortis had already begun to set in. At 4:35 p.m., six hours after the first officers arrived, Watson made his declaration: Kendrick Johnson was dead.

The original EMT report had declared the gym a crime scene. Says Watson of that day, “I definitely would not have ruled it an accident.”

But that evening, the sheriff’s department issued a statement: A body had been found at Lowndes High School. Foul play was not suspected.

VALDOSTA — The DNA testing of a speck of blood on the gymnasium wall, 50 feet from where a Lowndes High School student’s body was discovered, was one of many time-consuming steps authorities took to complete the four-month probe, all of which culminated Thursday into a completed autopsy and a timeline of the event surrounding the final hours of the life of Kendrick Johnson, 17.

DNA testing confirmed the blood did not belong to Johnson and the autopsy report was subsequently released this week by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

On Friday morning, The Times sat down to review the case with Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine, Capt. Wanda Edwards and Lt. Stryde Jones, who provided an overview of the investigation, beginning the day Johnson disappeared.

    Thursday, Jan. 10

Following the Christmas break, school resumed on Jan. 9. On Jan. 10, Johnson disappeared from video surveillance at approximately 1:09 p.m. after he entered Lowndes High School’s old gymnasium, according to reports. Footage from the school’s motion-controlled camera depicted another student going into the gym ahead of Johnson, but he went in another direction in the gym and authorities confirmed that the student headed straight to the next class.

“He comes down the hallway, and essentially he enters the gym. He’s following another kid,” said Jones. “The first kid comes in and goes to the left. Kendrick goes in and off to the right towards the corner where the mats are. You don’t see anyone trailing him or someone he’s having a dispute with,” adding that allegations he had been in a confrontation that day or the day before were false.

Shortly after, other students could be observed entering the gym for class and you could see kids playing basketball later on another camera, according to Jones.

“We can only assume that he had gone down into the mat by that time,” said Prine.

Later, the color guard and basketball teams held evening and night practices that Thursday inside the gym, stated Prine. And that evening, Johnson’s family filed a missing person’s report.

“He was supposed to go to the field house for his next class,” said Edwards. “He had already finished first, second and third block. He stopped by the gym to change into tennis shoes. But he never made it to the field house.”

Two students, who entered the building for gym class at around 10 a.m., noticed sock-covered feet just below the top of one of many gym mats that had been rolled and stacked against the wall behind the bleachers during the Christmas break, according to Prine. The students may have been walking on top of the roughly 700-pound, 7-feet-tall mats to retrieve school supplies and personal items, as interviews revealed that

students commonly used the rolled-up mats to avoid locker fees, stated Edwards.

“We found three other kids that knew K.J. and they kept their shoes under the mats because they didn’t have a locker,” said Edwards. “The mats are usually on their sides. They’d normally just lean in, pick the shoes out and change.”

But because school had just started back after Christmas break, all of the mats had been moved and stored vertically in that one area, according to Jones. So a mat that may have rested on top of a horizontal stack was now at the back of the bunch after they were turned vertically, stated Jones.

“There were bleachers right there beside the mats and they climb up on top of them,” said Edwards. “…there were Skittles, Twizzlers, Mountain Dews and Dr. Pepper. You can tell they’d sit up there.”

According to Prine, the gym class’ coach frantically began overturning the mats to reach Johnson’s body after being alerted by the two girls who had been walking on top of the stack. Law-enforcement and medical personnel were dispatched at about 10:30 a.m., and school was locked down at approximately 11 a.m. Shortly after, the LCSO requested backup and additional technicians from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

“Imagine the coach, these kids are saying there’s a kid in there,” said Edwards. “OK, so the coach goes over and starts pulling all of the mats out. He’s determined he’s going to get to the young’un. When he flipped the mats over, a shoe and some of Kendrick’s books slid off the top of the mat. We don’t know if he retrieved one shoe and went for the second, but the one shoe and his books all landed in the same area and we have the crime scene pictures. Nothing was touched.”

One of the first concerns of responding officers was that they had a deceased child on their hands and about 3,000 prospective witnesses, Jones stated. Investigators worked the scene from the outside of the gym to the interior lobbies and rest room area. That’s how they always process a crime scene, stated Edwards.

“A patrol officer knows the first thing he does is put up crime scene tape and keep everyone out until we get there,” said Edwards. “We make an initial examination, and then we back up because I have crime scene technicians that are trained to do it. So I let them do their job and process the scene.”

While his investigators were tagging every item of note on their thorough search of the parking lot to the stack of mats where the student’s body was discovered, Prine was returning to Valdosta. He and Chief Deputy Joe Crow were returning from out of town when they received the call about the incident.

By law, someone from the sheriff’s office should have contacted Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson when they learned of Johnson’s body so that a declaration of death could be made, and Prine acknowledged that they should have done so. However, fearing a leak to the media and understanding that there was little the coroner could do until investigators secured all of the evidence and reached Johnson’s body, Prine waited to call Watson.

“It’s been kind of an understanding with all of the coroners from the surrounding counties,” said Prine. “Rather than sitting there in the parking lot waiting for us to finish, you just call them when you get to the body. And I swear to you— no law-enforcement officer touched that body until the coroner got there and examined it.”

All of the students who were seen on camera in the gym Thursday and Friday were interviewed at the school that day, while hundreds of students were interviewed over the days that followed, according to Prine, who said interviews were conducted in homes with parents present. But after roughly four months investigating, with the autopsy in hand to show that the death was accidental, authorities could reach no other determination of death than a freak accident that was born from a “perfect storm.”

“It appears that he and a friend, who we interviewed and who confirmed this, would frequently trade shoes. They and other students kept their shoes under the mats in the gym and would change when they went to practice, so their nice shoes would stay nice for class. They couldn’t afford a locker,” said Prine. “It appears that since the mats were stacked up on end and had been moved and stored that way over the holiday break, his shoes weren’t where he left them, so he had to climb up on the mats. The one he fell into was in the middle of the stack, and he couldn’t get to it any other way than from the top ‘cause they’re so heavy he couldn’t move them.”

Jones said, “We found the shoes he was wearing in the mat with him, and the tennis shoes that he’s wearing in the basketball photo are the ones we found by the mat.”

Even after Johnson fell in, if he had tried to rock the mat over to get out, it was pinned in the stack, stated Prine. If it had been in the front of the stack, maybe he could have tilted it over, but it weighed too much.

Edwards said the investigation was extremely thorough as they knew there would be questions.

“We found bloody Kleenex in one of the bathrooms and traced them to one of the flag girls who got hurt during practice, but we have them tested to make sure and it was female DNA,” she said.

“Our investigators spent hours at the scene processing evidence.”

“Every fingernail in that gym was collected,” said Prine.

According to Edwards, the investigation at the scene took so long because they wanted to ensure that nothing was overlooked. She said the school allowed the mother and relatives to have a room in the board of education building while the scene was processed.

Jones said KJ’s father was working out of town and got back that Friday night. According to Prine, he talked to the family that day and told them that there was no evidence of foul play, but that he couldn’t say that for sure until the autopsy came back. He said the family was informed early in the week that the GBI was going to release it by Wednesday or Thursday.

“I have 100 percent confidence in our CID [Criminal Investigations Division] unit and their investigative abilities, as well the abilities of the GBI,” Prine said. “They all worked countless scenes. It’s a sad thing that the family is dissatisfied and it’s a sad thing their child had to go that way.”

Prine, Edwards and Jones said the number of man hours the department has devoted to this case are “too many to count” but they did everything they could to ensure that everything was processed correctly.

Edwards said, “We’re glad the case is closed now, because now we can talk and answer some of these wild rumors.”

The rumors have included allegations of involvement by Prine’s family members, but the sheriff has no sons or grandsons and he doesn’t have a nephew at the high school either.

“You wouldn’t believe the things that have been said about me and my family, and none of it is true,” Prine said. “We did everything we knew to do, and this is a tragic accident, but that’s all it was — an accident.”

There is a contention that the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and others in positions of power were attempting to cover-up this death scene.

By clearly defying state law and the informed, professional observation of the EMT who considered what happened inside the Old Gymnasium on January 11, 2013 was indeed a crime scene, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office made a calculated move to delay contacting the coroner.

The need for an independent federal investigation in the Kendrick Johnson case is evident and if local law enforcement believes that they are ‘above the law’, federal action must be taken.

The issue of Kendrick Johnson’s missing clothes is another matter that deserves attention. Is this an example of evidence tampering?

Georgia Code – Crimes and Offenses – Title 16, Section 16-10-94

A person commits the offense of tampering with evidence when, with the intent to prevent the apprehension or cause the wrongful apprehension of any person or to obstruct the prosecution or defense of any person, he knowingly destroys, alters, conceals, or disguises physical evidence or makes, devises, prepares, or plants false evidence.

The Valdosta Daily Times in their May 4 edition wrote about Prine’s own explanation of why Bill Watson, the Lowndes County coroner wasn’t immediately notified in a death scene investigation.

Lowndes County-Valdosta Crime Lab is the proverbial forensic arm of both the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and Valdosta Police Department.

How much of a role did the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Lab in the Kendrick Johnson case?

Instead of a public hospital such as the South Georgia Medical Center which has a morgue, Johnson’s body was transported to the Lowndes County-Valdosta Regional Crime Lab.

The Regional Crime Lab in Valdosta has no affiliation with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation nor the Office of the Coroner, but an affiliation with both the Lowndes Sheriff’s Office and the Valdosta Police Department.

Even though the Moultrie GBI lab closed, then the public hospital would be next place to hold an autopsy.

So Prine’s statement about the involvement of members of law enforcement not being involved in compromising the death scene is disingenuous. Prine’s ‘investigators’ do include members of the Lowndes County-Valdosta Crime Lab.

EMTs examined the body initially and made a determination there were bruises on Johnson’s body and this should be considered a crime scene.

However, who corrupted the death scene and other forensic evidence?

This is where the timeline needs to be completed in regard to when was the Lowndes County-Valdosta Crime Lab first summoned prior to the coroner being notified.

The Johnson case has received increasing attention nationwide and had even garnered a comment from U.S. Attorney Michael Moore of the Middle Georgia District via CNN’s Victor Blackwell’s Twitter back on May 14.

United States Attorney Michael Moore: “When a family comes forward with such an allegation, we certainly listen.”

It is rare when the county coroner states publicly that a death scene has been compromised by the local Sheriff’s Office.

However, this scenario indeed happened according to Bill Watson, who is the elected coroner of Lowndes County, and this alone should warrant further federal scrutiny.

Watson says it was approximately six hours before he was notified by the Lowndes County’s Sheriff Department.

By Georgia law, law enforcement officials are required to immediately notify the county coroner when a death scene is identified.

Additionally, the role of the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Lab–not associated with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation– played a role in broken protocol and alleged broken state laws.

Watson told the Valdosta Daily Times in mid-April what he thought about Kendrick’s body being moved and evidence being allegedly disturbed by investigators working under the Lowndes sheriff’s Office.

“Well it compromises my investigation one hundred percent,” Watson said. “I don’t know what the county did when they got there on the scene. The body had been moved. The scene, in my opinion, had been compromised.”

    http://www.examiner.com/article/civil-rights-organization-files-open-records-request-kendrick-johnson-case

    May 9, 2013
On Wednesday, May 8, the National Action Network (NAN) made a formal request for all public records that pertain to the Kendrick Johnson investigation be released by invoking the Georgia Open Records Act.

One of three separate requests was sent by letter to Lowndes County High School’s Pat Lefiles who is the Open Records compliance officer.

A second open records request was sent to Auburn Bennett, the Open Records compliance officer for the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

A final open records request was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agent Lisa Harris who is the organization’s representative that handles open records requests.

The letter from the National Action Network states:

….”Under the Georgia Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq., I am requesting an opportunity to inspect and/or obtain copies of public records that relate to the disappearance, subsequent death and/or the resulting investigation of Mr. Kendrick Johnson, the sophomore student found dead at Lowndes County High School on January 11, 2013. Along with any and all documents, papers, letters, maps, sound recordings, reports, video recordings, photographs, computer generated information, data, data fields, or similar material prepared we are also requesting emails, text messages and/or direct phone calls (both from office and cell phone lines). As it relates to email, phone calls and text messages we are requesting personal phone and email accounts, if said calls or emails were used in the course of business and relates to the disappearance, death and/or resulting investigation of Mr. Johnson….”

On Thursday, May 2, the long-awaited autopsy lab report from the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) was completed nearly four months after 17-year old Kendrick Johnson, a Lowndes County High student was allegedly found inside wrestling mats on January 11 in the Old Gymnasium on the campus.

Many things happened on January 11, but Lowndes County High School along with the Lowndes Sheriff’s Office have been at the forefront of not releasing pertinent information in a death investigation.

The Valdosta Daily Times wrote the following on April 11– three months after Kendrick Johnson’s body was found.

…”Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson has been in contact with the GBI regarding Kendrick’s autopsy, he said. But the Coroner hasn’t enjoyed the same level of cooperation from the sheriff’s office as the GBI, said Watson, who also stated he wasn’t contacted when Kendrick’s body was first discovered….”

It has been nearly four months, and the public still doesn’t know the names of the persons who initially found Kendrick Johnson’s body.

It has been nearly four months, and no 911 tapes have been released to the public in regard to the Johnson case. Who called 911 from Lowndes High on January 11?

At this point, we should know and it shouldn’t be a secret.

On a side note, CNN and other news organizations had made available the 911 tape of Charles Ramsey, a man who had helped three young women escape their abductor in Cleveland, Ohio.

How many kids have transferred from Lowndes High School since January 11? The public has a right to know.

Why has the South Georgia media been resistant in providing this information to the general public?

Phone records from Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office and Lowndes County High School should be requested as well.

Additionally, one of the pieces of evidence that is being requested is the video of a motion-controlled camera(s) inside the Old Gymnasium on January 10 and January 11.

According to the Valdosta Daily Times on Saturday , May 5, the following was written:

…”A motion-controlled camera recorded Johnson crossing paths with another student and heading in the opposite direction towards the gym mats, which authorities stated had been rolled up and stacked vertically over the Christmas holidays.

A class reportedly filled the empty gym shortly after Johnson went to retrieve his shoes.

Later, the color guard and basketball teams held evening and night practices that Thursday inside the gym, stated (Sheriff)Prine. And that evening, Johnson’s family filed a missing person’s report….”

With the GBI investigation completed, there is a renewed effort to obtain information.

In February, a formal letter was sent to the principal of Lowndes High School, Jay Floyd.

“What that letter does is that it requests any pertinent or potentially pertinent information and evidence be preserved in an anticipation of a potential suit being investigated and or filed,” said Warren Turner, the attorney for the Lowndes County School system.

Lowndes High School has been primarily silent since January 11, but with the GBI investigation over, evidence that had been previously withheld from the public and the legal counsel of Kendrick Johnson will now need to be presented.

The Georgia Open Records Act requires a response time within three business days. If the response takes longer than three days, a correspondence would be mandated in an effort to inform when the information would be available.

If the GBI, the Lowndes Sheriff’s Office and Lowndes High School deny any portion or all of the request, the government entities would have to cite a reason for the refusal along with citing legal precedent under Georgia law.

      • What’s the reason for not releasing the surveillance videos? I don’t understand it.

        • Xena says:

@SG2. They are actually still photos and not video tape. The school’s reason for not releasing them is because they show students whose identity is private. That means that a court must decide whether or not to order the release. Since the sheriff has closed investigation, that leaves it to Kendrick’s parents to file a case in the court and request the release of the surveillance photos.

Rumors from within the community is there was some bullying issue with someone related to local law enforcement, there was a game that evening, did the players go into the gym prior to the game. To many unanswered questions about the school it self the day prior to and of the discovery of his body.

The children from the school black and white talked about the different treatments between them. The communities and parents are outraged at the level of what they, the National Action Network, NAACP, SCLC and others believe is a police corruption cover up to the highest levels in law enforcement in the State of Georgia all the way up to the GBI. Several protests, rallys, prayer vigils have been helpd in support of the family.

Chanel 27 news is the only coverage that is consistent. Money is being raised to have a independent investigation of this incident. Many African Americans are turning up dead under the custody of that police department with no resonable explaination of their deaths. This particular incident is being BLACKED OUT IN THE MEDIA but kept alive in the social media.

“Johnsons meet the press on Kendrick’s birthday”

    Adam Floyd
    The Valdosta Daily Times
    October 11, 2013

VALDOSTA — On what would have been his 18th birthday, Kendrick Johnson’s family took to the steps of the Lowndes County Judicial Complex Thursday to announce a push to obtain the school surveillance videos of the day their son died.

“I walked into his room this morning, and I kissed his picture to say ‘happy birthday, Kendrick.’ His dreams and memories will always be with us,” said Kenneth Johnson, Kendrick’s father.

Supporters from what has come to be known as the KJ Movement marched to the judicial complex chanting their desire for justice in the death of Johnson, a Lowndes High student whose body was found January inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in the school’s old gymnasium.

Chants subsided as Johnson family attorney C.B. King addressed the gathered crowd.

“At this point in this investigation, there is one eyewitness we know is available. It is the video recording of the surveillance cameras in the gymnasium where his body was found,” said King, “For some unknown reason, that tape has been withheld despite repeated requests by the family and myself to view the tape.”

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, anything that contains “personally identifiable information” concerning a student is considered a student record, including images and videos of students. Student records are protected under the act and are prohibited from being disclosed unless ordered by a court.

“The tape, we believe, would greatly resolve many of the issues including how his body entered the gym if there is no tape or image of him entering the mat. That, of course, would identify possible suspects or persons who might have been involved in his killing,” said King.

Attorney Benjamin Crump, who recently joined the KJ legal team, claimed the withholding of the tape is a part of a cover-up.

“You have to ask yourself why wasn’t that tape turned over to attorney King and the family,” said Crump, “That’s the real question here. Why are they trying to cover up for the murder of Kendrick Johnson?”

According to FERPA guidelines, students have the right, along with their parents, to access their own records, but they are not allowed to access the records of other students. Parents are permitted to view images or videos of their own children, but without a court order, they are not allowed to obtain anything, including surveillance video, pertaining to any other student. If a school violates the act, they are subject to legal action, including the removal of federal education funding.

Crump does not believe that the surveillance videos fall under the definition of school records.

Warren Turner, attorney for Lowndes County Schools, sent a comment on the school’s responsibilities under the privacy act, which considers visual depictions as part of the educational records of a minor child.

Turner cites the Georgia Code that information required by a federal act to be protected must remain so; and the Code of Federal Regulations, (Authority: 20 U.S.C. 1232g) which defines a record as “any information recorded in any way, including, but not limited to, handwriting, print, computer media, video or audio tape, film, microfilm, and microfiche.”

Additionally, the Code of Federal Regulations stating that if a record contains information on more than one student, the parent can only request and review the specific information about that student.

In other words, KJ’s parents, under the laws, but only KJ’s parents, have the right to view the portion of his student record, including the video footage, as long as information about any other student is protected, redacted or removed.

During the press conference, King introduced Crump, the Tallahassee, Fla., lawyer who was part of the legal team that represented Trayvon Martin.

“I am here, quite simply, because Kendrick Johnson was murdered, and we are going to get to the truth of what happened to Kendrick Johnson,” said Crump. “These parents sent their son to school with a bookbag, and he was returned to them in a body bag.”

Johnson’s family has maintained since their son’s death that foul play was involved, but the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation concluded that his death was accidental.

“It is tragic that the coroner and the government officials would insult our intelligence by telling this family that the manner of death was an accident,” said Crump.

A second autopsy commissioned by the family was conducted by Dr. William R. Anderson, a for-hire pathologist in Florida. Anderson examined Johnson’s body and tissue slides of his organs and concluded that the cause of death was “apparent non-accidental, blunt force trauma.”

Johnson’s family and legal team believe the differences between the first and second autopsies point to a mishandling of the case. Crump claimed that investigators with the Sheriff’s Office and the GBI failed to collect and examine evidence from the scene of Johnson’s death that could have contained trace evidence, including DNA.

“We think it is, at best, total incompetence and, at worst, an attempt to bury the truth,” said Crump.

In a segment aired by CNN on Wednesday, it was reported that Johnson’s organs had been removed and that his body and skull had been stuffed with newspapers, a fact that elicited outrage from Crump.

“You can imagine the pain the family experienced once it was revealed to them the condition of the body once it reached Orlando and was opened up by Dr. Anderson. I think that, as you think about this idea that all of his organs were removed, you have to wonder why,” said Crump. “Why would his organs have been removed?”

During an autopsy, internal organs must be removed by the medical examiner, but are generally returned with the body for burial. It is not clear why the organs were not returned when the body was transported from the GBI crime lab to Harrington Funeral Home, but the Valdosta funeral home took extreme exception with the CNN report Wednesday that called their embalming process into question.

Harrington’s attorney, Roy Copeland of Copeland, Haugabrook & Walker, released a letter to The Times Thursday afternoon addressing the allegations about how KJ’s body was treated before burial.

The letter states that both Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson and a Mr. Bryan with the crime lab confirmed that the “viscera” or internal organs “were disposed of, due to decomposition of the same. Again, the intent and purpose of this letter is to dispel any notion that Mr. Harrington or Harrington’s Funeral Home were involved in any manner with the disposition of this young man’s internal organs.”

The second autopsy report conducted by Anderson notes that the organs were not included with the body. However, the report does not indicate that Anderson opened the body for examination and does not include any mention of how the body was embalmed. The autopsy report notes that Anderson’s assessments of the internal organs were made from microscopic examination of slides provided by the GBI crime lab from the initial autopsy.

Copeland, on Harrington’s behalf, also takes issue with the statement in the CNN report that the body was stuffed with old papers “like he was a garbage can.”

In the letter, Copeland states that the manner in which KJ’s body was prepared for burial “complies with the standard of care employed when there has been a significant decomposition of a body and the internal organs are missing.”

Disputing statements made by CNN experts, the letter quotes “The Principles and Practices of Embalming” as stating that in cases where all of the viscera has been removed at autopsy and has not been returned to the body, the treatment would include drying the chest cavity, dusting it with a hardening compound or embalming powder, and filling it with dry, clean sawdust or cotton mixed with a hardening compound or embalming powder.

Copeland states that KJ’s body was treated as all decomposed bodies with missing internal organs would be treated, according to the established principles and practices.

My head is spinning. A few things …
First, the blood on the door: If I were a parent with a child in that school, I would make efforts to file complaints that the school subjected my child to blood borne diseases. The thought that there was no custodian to notice that blood and that children were coming into that gym is sickening.

Second, at least one report says there was vomit in the mat. That would mean that Kendrick was still alive when put into it. Did the coroner determine how long he had been dead? That leads to thirdly …

Do I understand correctly that Kendrick didn’t return home that Friday, and his body was discovered that Monday? Without knowing how long Kendrick had been dead, there is possibility that he was taken from the gym. The fight could have started there, and he could have been taken out of the gym, beaten into a coma, and returned to the gym rolled into the mat that Sunday night or Monday morning before school. That also implicates someone at the school with after-hours access being involved. By finding his body in the gym in the mat, the initial coroner was able to develop the “accident” story.

Here is something else that puzzles me. A body dead for 3 days with blood and vomit present, but no one in the gym smelled anything? Just how clean is that gym for the students to be accustomed to foul odors?

@Yahtc. Thanks for the info. I went to the Ebony article and read again. I was mistaken thinking it was a Friday but Kendrick was last seen on a Thursday.

What does bother me is that the school has still shots of photos in the gym. They don’t want to release them on the basis that they are protecting the privacy of minors. How about they are protecting the identity of others present in that gym when Kendrick was there? If this isn’t a cover-up, I don’t know what is.

      • Yahtc says:

        Exactly, Xena.

I just found this video posted on Youtube on January 14, 2013.

The most important part begins at about timestamp 22:05 with the people expressing their concerns, insights, suspicions, etc.

Hope you will have some time to listen to those last 14 minutes.

This is one video that I will come back to in order to transcribe parts.

    Excerpt:

The Johnsons are pushing for a federal investigation into their son’s death.

As for what comes next, they’re hoping to gain access to more evidence.

In the incident report, which Grantland acquired through an open records request, most names are redacted. The sheriff’s department said it did this to protect the identity of minors.

Likewise, the sheriff’s department and the school have not released surveillance footage, which they also say would reveal the identity of minors. The Johnsons are petitioning a judge to declare the redactions illegal, King said, and a hearing will be set in the next few weeks.

  75. Trayvon family lawyer joins outcry over Georgia death

    http://daltondailycitizen.com/news_tab3/x703135212/Trayvon-family-lawyer-joins-outcry-over-Georgia-death

SAVANNAH — The attorney who helped push for a criminal prosecution in Trayvon Martin’s shooting said Thursday that he’s joining the fight to reopen an investigation into the death of a Georgia teenager whose body was found inside a rolled-up wrestling mat at school.

The body of Kendrick Johnson, 17, was found Jan. 11 in south Georgia, and Lowndes County sheriff’s investigators concluded that he died in a freak accident — falling headfirst into an upright mat and becoming trapped. But Johnson’s family believes he was killed and has been pressuring authorities into taking a second look at the case.

Now the family has enlisted the help of Tallahassee, Fla.-based attorney Benjamin Crump. Best known as the lawyer who helped focus national attention on the February 2012 shooting death of Martin by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, Crump has pursued several civil rights cases against law enforcement agencies. He said Johnson’s parents came to him seeking help.

“This is a real-life murder mystery where these parents sent their child to school with a book bag and he was returned to them in a body bag,” Crump said in a phone interview. “They brought me in to make sure this is not able to be swept under the rug in small-town Georgia and they never get justice for their child.”

School officials found Johnson’s body in the gym after his parents reported him missing the night before. He was stuck upside down in the middle of a wrestling mat that had been rolled up and propped upright behind bleachers.

Sheriff Chris Prine has said he suspected Johnson became trapped while trying to retrieve a shoe that fell into the center of the large rolled mat. A Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner concluded that the youth died from positional asphyxia, his body stuck in a position in which he couldn’t breathe.

But the teen’s parents, Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson, hired Dr. William R. Anderson to provide a second opinion after a judge agreed in May to exhume the body. The private pathologist performed his own autopsy in June and presented a four-page report of his findings Aug. 15.

Anderson’s report said he detected hemorrhaging on the right side of Johnson’s neck. The pathologist concluded the teenager had died from blunt force trauma near his carotid artery and that the fatal blow appeared to be “non-accidental.”

GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang said the agency stands by its original findings.

“We have an excellent team of medical examiners, and we stand by them 100 percent,” Lang said.

Johnson’s family asked the Justice Department to get involved, arguing that authorities failed to investigate Johnson’s death thoroughly because he’s black. But the Justice Department found insufficient evidence to support an investigation. U.S. Attorney Michael Moore in Macon has been monitoring the case but has yet to announce whether he’ll take any further action. Moore did not immediately return a phone message Thursday.

Crump said the Johnson family’s legal team plans to focus on getting the official manner of death in the case changed from accidental to homicide. Asked how he planned to do that, Crump said, “We’re going to have to look at getting the courts involved.” He said it was too soon to be more specific.

  76. FBI Investigator Suspects Foul Play in Death of Kendrick Johnson

    http://www.ebony.com/black-listed/news-views/fbi-investigator-suspects-foul-play-in-death-of-kendrick-johnson-981#.UlbqLiso7IU

For the local sheriff’s department, the death of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson is a closed book: A tragedy, but an accident. State medical examiners concluded that Johnson suffocated in January after getting stuck in a rolled-up gym mat while reaching for a sneaker. That’s a finding his family has never accepted, and one challenged by the findings of a second autopsy they commissioned.

Now, death scene imagery obtained exclusively by CNN has led a former FBI agent to question how the three-sport athlete died.

“I don’t believe this was an accident. I think this young man met with foul play,” said Harold Copus, now an Atlanta private investigator. And Johnson’s father, Kenneth Johnson, said he believes authorities aren’t leveling with his family. Dead teen’s parents speak out New autopsy finds teen death not accident What happened to Kendrick Johnson? “They know something happened in that gym, and they don’t want it to come out,” he said.

Ben Crump is speaking now, and says KJ was murdered. He says this is a real life murder mystery.

4 surveillance cameras that could show KJ in the gym and some tape has been withheld, according to Chevene King.

  83. I’ll bet the stuffing of this kid’s body was to thwart a new autopsy. They probably figured the family wasn’t going to buy their bullsh*t story. You can bet your sweet bippy more people are involved in this cover up.

  84. Sheriff Prine, what do you know and when did you know it b/c your “no foul play” BULLSHIT doesn’t pass the smell test?

  85. There is something rotten, vile and wicked in Georgia. Someone beat this kid to death and disfigured his face. And the Sheriff says no foul play? GTFOOH!

    • Ametia says:

Almost 6 months have passed since the post of thhis horrific murder, and the filth & ugliness is being exposed. Kendrick Johnson was brutally beaten to death. The thought of his body being stuffed with newspaper leaves me breathless.

The GA FBI cannot be trusted. This case needs federal investigation by the DOJ.

  86. Yahtc says:

Ametia, can you erase this. I will now post it in today’s article.

What no one is saying is that the young man started dating the ex of the police cheifs grandson. They had altercations in the past. In addition after everything happened the grandson no longer attends school in the area. He was shipped off? I think the grandson attacked the young man they rolled him up in the mat. This is cover up so from the coroner to the police cheif covering for his grandson.

    • Yahtc says:

      This would explain the cover-up.

    • I was wondering if his death had something to do with dating a white girl.

These BARBARIANS murdered a boy and rolled him into a rug like a piece of trash. No humanity, NO SOUL.

        • The stuffing of Kendrick Johnson’s body with newspapers is equal to stuffing an animal. That’s what the evil bastards thought of him. They gutted and stuffed him like an animal. It’s beyond the mother fucking pale!

    • jen says:

Thank You Kimmy for revealing the only info that makes sense of this epic fail of a cover up. The only thing law enforcement and medical officials have accomplished is disrespecting Kendrick and spitting in the face of his heartbroken and grieving parents. Teenage boys have fought over teenage girls since the beginning of time, black eyes and broken noses are expected and accepted. But , A teenage boy that beats another to death is not civilized or centered and will only wreak more havoc and pain upon society and other innocents. The law enforcement involved are most certainly aware of these facts and for them to assist this boy in avoiding his responsibility is a crime as horrific as the murder itself. They should all be charged as accomplices and be charged and punished accordingly.

  89. Kendrick Johnson’s body was stuffed with newspapers. Every organ from the pelvis to the skull was gone.

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/09/us/georgia-gym-mat-death/

Valdosta, Georgia (CNN) — The death of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was awful enough for his parents. Then came the doubts about investigators’ conclusion that it was an accident.

But the discovery that their son’s body and skull had been stuffed with newspaper before burial added a horrific new dimension to their anguish and further fueled their skepticism of the official findings.

“We have been let down again,” his father, Kenneth Johnson, told CNN. “When we buried Kendrick, we thought we were burying Kendrick, not half of Kendrick.”

Kendrick Johnson was found dead in a gym at Lowndes County High School in January. State medical examiners concluded that the three-sport athlete suffocated after getting stuck in a rolled-up gym mat while reaching for a sneaker.

His parents, Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson, never have bought that explanation. They won a court order to have their son’s body exhumed and a second autopsy performed in June.

During an autopsy, internal organs are removed and examined before being returned for burial. But when Dr. Bill Anderson, the private pathologist who conducted the second autopsy, opened up the teen’s remains, the brain, heart, lungs, liver and other viscera were missing. Every organ from the pelvis to the skull was gone.

“I’m not sure at this point who did not return the organs to the body,” Anderson said. “But I know when we got the body, the organs were not there.”

Two entities had custody of Kendrick Johnson’s body after his death — the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which conducted the first autopsy in January; and the Harrington Funeral Home in Valdosta, which handled the teen’s embalming and burial.

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/03/us/georgia-teen-death-autopsy/index.html?sr=sharebar_twitter

(CNN) — Georgia teen Kendrick Johnson, who was found dead in a rolled-up gym mat at his high school in January, died as the result of “unexplained, apparent non-accidental, blunt force trauma,” according to a newly released, independent autopsy report.

The report, obtained exclusively Tuesday by CNN, directly contradicts the finding of an autopsy conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation that determined that Johnson’s death was the result of positional asphyxia. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office determined that his death was accidental.

Johnson, 17 and an athlete, was found January 11 headfirst in a rolled wrestling mat at a Lowndes County High School gym in Valdosta, Georgia.

Inconsistencies in official reports on the condition of Kendrick’s body have led the family and community to question the official cause of his death.

The family’s attorney, Chevene King, has sent the independent autopsy report to the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the U.S . Attorney for Georgia’s Middle District and Lowndes County Coroner for review.

The coroner can call a coroner’s inquest, a process that resembles a grand jury proceeding. After reviewing evidence and testimony, a jury would decide the cause of death, although the findings alone would have no civil or criminal consequences.

“Coroner’s inquests are not something you do every day. I cannot tell you the last time a coroner’s inquest was done in this office,” Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson said.

“I want to do the right thing by the people and the county and all concerned; I’m just not sure we have enough information. I’m not about to refute anybody’s findings because I’m not a doctor,” said Watson.

On May 1, a judge granted the Johnsons’ request to exhume their son’s body for the purposes of a conducting an independent autopsy at their expense.

That autopsy, conducted June 15, found blunt force trauma to the right neck and soft tissues, “consistent with inflicted injury.” It was conducted by Dr. William R. Anderson with Forensic Dimensions in Heathrow, Florida.

That finding supports the narrative of the initial patient care report, written by EMTs with the South Georgia Medical Center Mobile Healthcare Service on January 11, the day Johnson’s body was discovered. That report said, “bruising noted to the right side jaw.”

  97. United States Justice Department: Investigate Conduct in Georgia’s Southern Judicial District

    https://www.change.org/petitions/united-states-justice-department-investigate-conduct-in-georgia-s-southern-judicial-district

Georgia’s Southern Judicial District has a long, extended history of unintended, unexplained deaths in the Black community. The legacy of the Turner Lynchings of 1918 exemplify traits and tactics that can be traced to today’s law environment. The many deaths at the Lowndes County jail, the circumstances surrounding the death of Stephon Edgerton, aka as Juan Gatti and the January 10, 2013 mysterious disappearance and subsequent discovery the body of KENDRICK KJ JOHNSON, a 17 year old tenth grader at Lowndes High School, in the old gym attests to a menace of governmental silence and secrecy. The public needs a Judicial Circuit that works for all. We plead and beg you, please give JUSTICE vision in the Southern Judicial Circuit.

    http://valdostatoday.com/2013/04/feds-to-get-involved-in-kendrick-johnson-investigation/

Valdosta, GA- The parents of Kendrick Johnson have sent a formal request to US Attorney General Eric Holder, asking the Department of Justice to take over the death investigation of the 17-year old.

The letter cites Sheriff Prine’s decision to deem the deal accidental as ‘premature,’ as it was made prior to any autopsy being performed. County Coroner Bill Watson is also quoted in the letter, as he stated that his investigation was ’100 percent compromised’ by the time he reached the scene at Lowndes High School.

Along with a number of civil rights groups, the parents are urging the Department of Justice to assume the investigation due to ‘concerns about the ‘objectivity and competency of those involved in this investigation,’ including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

They are asking for a speedy reply due to the fact that they believe once school lets out for the summer, potential witnesses could be lost and out of contact.
