He was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York prior to becoming Deputy Attorney General.

In December 2003, as Deputy Attorney General, Comey appointed the U.S. Attorney in Chicago, close friend and former colleague Patrick Fitzgerald, as Special Counsel to head the CIA leak grand jury investigation after Attorney General John Ashcroft recused himself. On May 29, 2013 President Barack Obama announced plans to appoint Comey to succeed Robert S. Mueller III as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Comey in line to become FBI director, officials say

President Obama plans to nominate James B. Comey, a former senior Justice Department official in the George W. Bush administration, to replace Robert S. Mueller III as FBI director, according to two people with knowledge of the selection process.

Comey, 52, was at the center of some of the most bruising debates over counterterrorism during the Bush administration and established a reputation as a fierce defender of the law and the integrity of the Justice Department regardless of the political pressures of the moment

Rachel Maddow did an excellent segment on James Comey last night.

It appears Mr. Comey does not suffer fools lightly.
