The Baltimore Police Department released the names of six police officers suspended with pay after the arrest of Freddie Gray, who died of a spinal injury on Sunday, as the mayor promised answers. ONE OFFICER IS HOLDING OUT ON MAKING A STATEMENT.
The officers were identified by the department Tuesday as: Lt. Brian Rice, 41, who joined the department in 1997; Officer Caesar Goodson, 45, who joined in 1999; Sgt. Alicia White, 30, who joined in 2010; Officer William Porter, 25, who joined in 2012; Officer Garrett Miller, 26, who joined in 2012; and Officer Edward Nero, 29, who joined in 2012.

Just some of the recent names in the scourge of black people who are killed every 28 hours by police in the U.S. And, each time police kill black people, it seems they are rewarded. The policeman who shot Michael Brown became a millionaire because of the crowdfunded support he received. The prosecutor, Daniel Donovan, who failed to indict any of the officers who killed Eric Garner has recently been tapped by the Staten Island GOP to run for a plum senate seat.

Last month, Nellie Andreeva wrote a piece for Deadline on race in contemporary television that set the Internet ablaze. In the article, Andreeva ponders whether the current array of multiracial castings in popular shows (How to Get Away with Murder, Scandal, Jane the Virgin, The Mindy Project) or, in some cases, shows that deal specifically with the experiences of people from a particular community of color (Black-ish, Fresh Off the Boat, Empire) have gone “too far.” Andreeva asks her audience to consider, though she does not quite state it outright, the cost to white people of seeing people of color on television.
Andreeva does not explore what people of color think about the current TV landscape or the significance of seeing themselves reflected in mainstream media. She does not examine existing or potential pathways for more people of color to enter the writers’ room or sit on the director’s chair. Instead, she reinforces the idea that whatever loss white people might experience trumps all.

Good article. Just shows there is oftentimes plenty of warning about these killer cops, that they need to be terminated. But cops never want to fire other (white) cops no matter how unhinged they are. Definitely a huge part of the problem.

There are a lot of white folks out there who desperately want to believe that all or most cops are “good” and they don’t do things like this unless they have to. Most white folks, especially older ones, prefer not to even know about this, they would rather not know.

What did Freddie Gray do to be stunned or interfered with any manner? He saw the cops and just wanted to get the hell away from them. THAT IS ALL HE EVER DID and, quite frankly, I would do the same thing.
I hear you. White folks saying “why do they have to kill (black) people, why can’t they just stun them?” isn’t a huge improvement. They’re always going to grasp at some straw that exonerates the cop because it has been drilled into their heads that “most cops are good cops.” They also believe that cops have a very dangerous job and they are really putting their lives on the line every single day for the citizens. That’s been drilled into their heads by those who handle public relations for the police departments. That bumper sticker, “Thank a Cop” is everywhere.

Well, here’s what I think happened. These cops are using excessive force ALL THE TIME but most black men survive it and most probably do not sustain permanent injuries. Some do, of course, but you never hear about it. Also, some cops are more forceful than others, some enjoy beating black men more than others.
When this is how they do their policing, which it is, there inevitably comes that day when some cops go too far and the victim is mutilated or murdered. Or, the victim may be more fragile than the cops thought.
Freddie Gray looks as though he was on the small side. Same thing for Martese Johnson who survived his assault and will make a full recovery, at least physically.
But this is what I’ve been saying. No one is counting. No one knows how many black people have been assaulted by cops and what eventually happened to them. Did their injuries heal or were they disabled in any way? And what about the psychological trauma? How does that affect the remainder of their lives?

Yeah, I meant to get that but got off on a tangent. America’s “moral authority” is really a myth that is perpetuated mainly in this country. There was a period of time after WWII when the world really did look to America for leadership because so much of the rest of the world was literally just heaps of rubble. But the second half of the 20th century really starts to become the story of how that international good will was squandered in Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam, Latin American interventions, and so forth.
So, that’s a really good question, are we better than those we are fighting overseas as if we own the moral high ground? What do we do to our own citizens? Everyone should think about that.

You’re right about America’s “moral authority” being a purely American concept and a myth, Liza. Few here want to admit that the U.S. has done some heinous things, and that this is why some foreign governments and citizens hate our guts. I see the fake moral authority when some Americans scream about “American exceptionalism,” when they shout, “USA! USA!,” and when they propose military might as the only solution to any conflict with another nation. They have no idea that they’re in deep denial, or that their attitude toward other nations is the #1 reason we are despised by some nations and their citizens. Other nations have a right to be suspicious and wary of us because of the things we’ve done to them. Take the Iranians, for example. Few Americans know that Iran had a secular democracy in the early 1950s, and that President Eisenhower gave the CIA permission to topple its leader. Want to know why? To protect the interests of American, British, and Russian oil companies. Once Mossadegh was removed from power, the CIA replaced him with their handpicked guy, an Islamic fundamentalist. We later supported the Shah of Iran until the Iranian Revolution. In 1979, Iran became an Islamic republic after the Ayotollah Khomeini was brought back to Iran from exile in France to lead the country. This bit of interfering that we did in Iran is what has caused its leaders and citizens to not trust us. If Iran had done this to us, the same little group of “America is always right” persons would hate Iran and its citizens to the end of their days. This interfering in foreign nations’ governments by the U.S. has occurred over and over again. A major reason some don’t want the P5+1 agreement with Iran to succeed is because they want to retain the power to declare war on the nation at will. When Rev. Wright said that “the chickens have come home to roost,” this is what he meant. 9/11 was a sort of payback for all of the dirty and evil things the U.S. has done, and I don’t think it’s over yet, and if left to the Boltons, Netanyahus, McCains, Grahams, Adelsons, Kristols, etc. there will never be any chance at having peace in the Middle East or anywhere else.

America as a whole has decided to choose war, famine, racism, slavery, killing in the name of religious rights, and then inflict these choices on its citizens, then turn around and inflict them on other nations.

I think that the mutilation and murder of Freddie Gray is going to stand with the most atrocious and haunting crimes committed against a black citizen of this country. And there are just so many of them that most victims remain unknown except to their families and where the crime was committed.
I keep thinking about Sergeant Isaac Woodard Jr., and the WWII homecoming that he received. Even though he survived being attacked by the police and lived to be 73, they mutilated him in a way that defies comprehension, similar to what happened to Freddie Gray. I think all of us want to ask those cops a couple of questions. WHY? Why such a horrific mutilation? In your twisted mind, what do you think justifies mutilating another person’s body to the extent that they die a horrible death or live their life with a severe disability?

At age 23, Woodard enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 14, 1942 at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina. He served in the Pacific Theater in a labor battalion as a longshoreman and was promoted to sergeant.[1] He earned a battle star for his Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal by unloading ships under enemy fire in New Guinea, and received the Good Conduct Medal, as well as the Service medal and World War II Victory Medal awarded to all American participants.[2] He received an honorable discharge.
On February 12, 1946, former U.S. Army Sergeant Isaac Woodard Jr. was on a Greyhound Lines bus traveling from Camp Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, where he had been discharged, en route to rejoin his family in North Carolina. When the bus reached a rest stop just outside of Augusta, Woodard asked the bus driver if there was time for him to use a restroom. The driver grudgingly acceded to the request after an argument. Woodard returned to his seat from the rest stop without incident, and the bus departed.[2]
The bus stopped in Batesburg (now Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina), near Aiken. Though Woodard had caused no disruption, the driver contacted the local police (including Chief of Police Linwood Shull), who forcibly removed Woodard from the bus. After demanding to see his discharge papers, a number of policemen, including Shull, took Woodard to a nearby alleyway, where they beat him repeatedly with nightsticks. They then took Woodard to the town jail and arrested him for disorderly conduct, accusing him of drinking beer in the back of the bus with other soldiers.
Newspaper accounts vary on what happened next (and accounts sometimes spelled his name as “Woodward”), but author and attorney Michael R. Gardner said in 2003:
“In none of the papers is there any suggestion there was verbal or physical violence on the part of Sergeant Woodard. It’s quite unclear what really happened. What did happen with certainty is the next morning when the sun came up, Sergeant Isaac Woodard was blind for life.[3]”
During the course of the night in jail, Shull beat and blinded Woodard. Woodard also suffered partial amnesia as a result of his injuries.
In his court testimony, Woodard stated that he was punched in the eyes by police several times on the way to the jail, and later repeatedly jabbed in his eyes with a billy club.[4] Newspaper accounts[5] indicate that Woodard’s eyes had been “gouged out”; historical documents indicate that each globe was ruptured irreparably in the socket.[6]
The following morning, the police sent Woodard before the local judge, who found him guilty and fined him fifty dollars. The soldier requested medical assistance, but it took two more days for a doctor to be sent to him. Not knowing where he was and suffering from amnesia, Woodard ended up in a hospital in Aiken, South Carolina, receiving substandard medical care.
Three weeks after he was reported missing by his relatives, Woodard was discovered in the hospital. He was immediately rushed to a US Army hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Though his memory had begun to recover by that time, doctors found both eyes were damaged beyond repair.

What about medical emergency vehicles that need to get through? They could even be carrying someone in their own family, our families.

It seems wrong to me that the ME report has not been released to Freddie’s family. They need to see it before laying Freddie in his grave so that their own medical examiner can challenge any discrepancies and the family ask for a coroner’s inquest if there is a problem with the official ME report. (We know the trouble Kendrick Johnson’s family is having getting a coroner’s inquest activated because a judge said that he would not rule on that request until the DOJ finishes its work.)

How can Officers hold out on making statements. This is part of their jobs. Also, how can video(s) be withheld. The Officers work for the public and the government. All employees are bound by rules, guidelines, regulations and/or laws of the employer. How can they not write reports?

Agreed. Not writing reports promptly, especially in this case (where I feel Freddie was already in dire medical need when they placed him into the van instead of an ambulance) indicates to me that a cover-up is in the works.
I’m trying to wrap my brain around it.
Joyce, the cops have had it their way for so long that they’re having difficulty figuring out what has changed. They’ve never followed the rules and they never pay a price for their crimes against black people. Once they make up their cop lies that explain why they had to kill or maim this or that black man, woman, or child, they really do think that should be the end of it. And they have been allowed to do this, and the entire “justice” system supports them.
