Tenisha MartinRepublican presidential candidate Jeb Bush ended a town hall early on Wednesday after being interrupted by members of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The protesters’ appearance marked the first of its kind directed at a GOP candidate following demonstrations at events featuring Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is running as a Democrat. Bush reportedly left the event in North Las Vegas without his customary closing statement.

According to the Times, dozens of protesters associated with the movement began chanting “black lives matter” during the event with their hand raised. Two other demonstrators were kicked out at the start of the town hall when they used the same chant. The progressive Netroots Nation conference stated on its Facebook page late Wednesday night that the group also contained Planned Parenthood supporters and immigration activists.

Some supporters of the former Florida governor reportedly responded by chanting “white lives matter” and “all lives matter” at the group, while at least one Bush supporter and a protester traded obscene hand gestures.

Members of Bush’s campaign told the Times that he met with members of the movement earlier in the day to discuss reforming the criminal justice system and “barriers to upward mobility.”

Footage from the event also shows Bush being asked how he would address institutional racism within the US.

    Ten years after the storm, there’s still a city at the mouth of the Mississippi. Just not the same one.

    Prologue
    A HOT DAY TO BURY SOMEONE

    It was a bright, hot morning at the end of June, one of those Louisiana days when the heat and the humidity make a shawl of the air long before noon. Traffic was piling up along Crowder Boulevard near where the land ends and the lake begins. Automobiles and motorcycles were parked willy-nilly all around the intersection of Crowder and Morrison, stashed side by each on the grass of the island dividing the boulevard, overwhelming the parking lot of the barbecue-meat place and the check-cashing joint a little ways down from the intersection. For the most part, these were not civilian vehicles. Most of the cars had red lights on their roofs. Most of them had emblems on their doors. Kenner. Slidell. Gretna. The Louisiana State Police motorcycle honor guard. Occasionally, there was the brief blast of a siren, just to clear the road. There was going to be a funeral at St. Maria Goretti, and nobody wanted to be late.

    They were burying Daryle Holloway that morning, a member of the New Orleans Police Department shot and killed in the line of duty a week earlier. All over the spreading lawn in front of the church, cops in formal uniform stood in small groups, tugging their tight collars, angling for what little breeze there was. A great spreading oak tree provided blessed shade. Gradually, in twos and threes, the assembled police from all over the state gravitated to the cool darkness beneath it. Two aging police horses stood alone in the sun, drooping as though they would melt right into the earth. It was the last week in June, and they were burying Daryle Holloway.

    Woman who posted video of officer punching a suspect becomes target of Miami police union

    Just after 4 p.m. Thursday, a woman stood a few feet away from several Miami Police Department patrol cars with her cellphone camera recording. After a few seconds, an officer entered the frame, escorting a handcuffed young black man to the back of a police car.

    Suddenly, the officer put his head inside the car door and appeared to punch the suspect.

    “Oh!” a woman exclaimed on the recording, reacting to what was unfolding before her. The woman, who the Associated Press identified as Shenitria Blocker, moved closer, and the officer climbed into the back seat of the car. Moments later, the camera shook and the video ended.

    “That was the officer trying to grab my phone,” Blocker later told ABC affiliate WPLG. “He snatched my arm, so I snatched back.”

    Police told her to delete the video or she would be arrested, said Blocker, who refused to have her face shown on the ABC station’s camera.

    She didn’t delete the video, but instead a friend, Marilyn Smith, posted it online, where it quickly went viral and prompted a police investigation.

    “The cop told him he didn’t have to tell him why he was being arrested, and the officer jumped in the car, got on him and hit the man a couple of times,” Blocker told the AP.

    The officer who appears in the video has been relieved of his duties, according to Miami police, and his gun and badge have been taken away while the investigation is pending.

    But the Miami Fraternal Order of Police is focused on an entirely different issue.

    In a statement, the police union said “social media has placed a very negative tone on law enforcement nationwide” and that the officer in question was “protecting our community.”

    Up until now I’ve been very skeptical of the talk about Joe Biden running for president, figuring it was the product of his “friends” who saw themselves as prime movers in a late-breaking campaign that would save the Democratic Party and the country. But if this suggestion from Carl Bernstein, as reported in Politico by Nick Gass, is somehow accurate, count me as an active opponent of Biden ‘16:

    “[O]ne thing that I keep hearing about Biden is that if he were to declare and say, because age is such a problem for him if he does, I want to be a one-term president. I want to serve for four years, unite Washington. I’ve dealt with the Republicans in Congress all my public life,” Bernstein told CNN’s “New Day.”

    “I think there’s a conversation going on to that effect among his aides and friends,” he said. “It could light fire to the current political environment.

    Now I can understand the one-term pledge as a way to avoid images of Ronald Reagan’s second term, since Biden will turn 78 in 2020. I mean, we can’t all be Jerry Brown.

    Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Daughter Ashley Is Following Her Calling To Be A Rap Star

    Ashley Jackson, daughter of Reverend Jesse Jackson, has decided she wants be a rap star. The 16-year-old has just recorded a rap song, according to celebrity news and gossip site TMZ.

    The site also reported that “daddy Jackson thinks she’s on the wrong path.”

    After obtaining a copy of her song and having a listen, the people at TMZ gave their verdict: “She’s kinda got an Iggy attitude, and the lyrics are engaging.” The TMZ office was “severely divided” on the song they added.

    Reverend Jackson, however, has made his thoughts felt and it isn’t very encouraging.

    “The Reverend thinks Ashley needs to mic down and concentrate on graduating high school. He’s not slamming the song, but he’s definitely not giving his stamp of approval,” TMZ reported.

    Ashley identifies herself as a singer and a rapper and has been exploring the world of music and perhaps a career in it. Her work has been titled “Fleek Master” and is now available online.

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dellarontay Readus was in pain Wednesday.

    “It’s just that it hurts so much, I can’t do anything else but cry,” Readus told WREG.
    The recent Melrose High School graduate lost his mother one month before starting classes on a full-ride scholarship to Stanford University.

    “I hope she’s looking down on me, and she’s able to see everything I’m doing,” Readus cried. “I hope she’s able to see all the good work I’m going to put in this world.”

    Readus’ mom died after years of dealing with heart and stomach issues.
    “It feels terrible, man, because my momma was honestly my reason for everything I’ve ever done,” Readus said.

    Here’s What Really Happened In Jeb Bush’s Private ‘Black Lives Matter’ Meeting

    After the confrontation, the Bush campaign said the candidate had privately met with advocates for the movement before the event, an assertion that appeared in multiple articles about the disruption.

    But that description is misleading, The Huffington Post has learned.

    There was a meeting, but no activists from the Black Lives Matter movement participated. Instead, Bush met with a local elected official, a GOP lobbyist and a staffer from an anti-poverty organization.

    Kevin Hooks, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Urban League, told HuffPost he set up the meeting at the Bush campaign’s behest. His organization focuses on providing job opportunities for low-income residents. Hooks said that while he respects Bush for reaching out, he would not characterize the people at the meeting as Black Lives Matter activists. “It’s a little disingenuous,” he said.

    There were three people at the table with Bush. Hooks confirmed that a member of his staff was one of them. North Las Vegas Mayor Pro Tem Pamela Goynes-Brown was the second, and she said the third attendee was Sean Fellows, a registered lobbyist for a communications firm who once ran as a Republican candidate for state assembly…

    Y’all deserve a treat. “Late in the Evening”, actually a song from Paul Simon’s solo career, was the final song that Simon and Garfunkel performed at their 1981 reunion concert in Central Park attended by 500,000 folks. Yeah, that is 1/2 million. They were both 40 years old.

    I don’t think he’s playing to lose. Even moreso than Hillary in 2008, he believes he’s ENTITLED to the Presidency, and resents that he should be forced to go through the motions. He’s forever heard that he was ‘ the smart one’, so why shouldn’t the Presidency be handed over to him?

    He has his mother’s personality, and can’t hide his complete contempt for the ‘little people’.

    I honestly still am back at the point that he went on UNIVISION, and told those folks that they could work here, and pay taxes, but don’t believe that you will ever get full citizenship in America. But, because he used fancy language, and did it in Spanish, it’s supposed to take the sting out of what he said.

    And then this week, telling that guy, who had been waiting 8 years to bring his sister over – that she better do it before he became President, because he was going to shut that down?

    Sigh.

    I’m starting to become convinced that, like countless comic book supervillains who gain universe-changing power only to stupidly blow it in the end, Jeb Bush is self-sabotaging and doesn’t really want this gig that his dad and older brother had.

    I’d say Jeb couldn’t possibly be this utterly moronic, but it makes sense if deep down that he sees what history did to his dad and especially his big bro and that he feels like he’s being forced into this disaster, the poor little hothouse flower that he is.

    I mean right now he’s supposed to be the crown prince with people tossing hundreds of millions of dollars at him to run and win, and instead he’s getting his ass handed to him in the polls by two failed CEOs with bad hair and a neurosurgeon who incessantly compares everything to slavery.

    I think he seriously wants out, so he’s mailing it in.

    Either that, or Jeb’s so incompetent that the people who made his idiot brother president for eight years still can’t find a way to get this guy in the W column, which is entirely possible.

    Chicago, New Orleans, and rebirth

    Envy isn’t a rational response to the upcoming 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina..

    But with Aug. 29 fast approaching and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu making media rounds, including at the Tribune Editorial Board, I find myself wishing for a storm in Chicago — an unpredictable, haughty, devastating swirl of fury. A dramatic levee break. Geysers bursting through manhole covers. A sleeping city, forced onto the rooftops.

    That’s what it took to hit the reset button in New Orleans. Chaos. Tragedy. Heartbreak

    Residents overthrew a corrupt government. A new mayor slashed the city budget, forced unpaid furloughs, cut positions, detonated labor contracts. New Orleans’ City Hall got leaner and more efficient. Dilapidated buildings were torn down. Public housing got rebuilt. Governments were consolidated.

    An underperforming public school system saw a complete makeover. A new schools chief, Paul Vallas, designed a school system with the flexibility of an entrepreneur. No restrictive mandates from the city or the state. No demands from teacher unions to abide. Instead, he created the nation’s first free-market education system.

    Hurricane Katrina gave a great American city a rebirth.

    And after careful study of the levees, it turns out the devastation was not born of natural disaster. It was man-made.

    Michael Jordan’s endorsement deals are finally starting to get true, real numbers attached to them. All because of a 6-year-old coupon to save two bucks on a piece of steak at a grocery store that doesn’t even exist anymore.

    The numbers, already more than half a billion dollars in the past decade, are a sensitive enough matter that major Jordan sponsors Nike (NKE), Gatorade, Upper Deck and 2K Sports requested that a judge restrict access to the courtroom exactly so this type of article couldn’t be written.

    Jordan is in a lawsuit against Dominick’s Finer Foods, a Chicago-area grocery store that doesn’t even operate anymore.

    In 2009, Sports Illustrated magazine ran a special edition in Chicago (and North Carolina) congratulating Jordan when he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. About 30 percent of the 140,000-some copies were sold.

    Jordan’s lawyers argue that the fair market value for the basketball star’s “identity” should be determined by precedent, meaning the amount that Jordan has fetched from previous endorsement deals—Andrew Zimbalist, an economics professor at Smith College placed the value of Jordan’s identity around $10 million—or by considering the “amounts received by comparable persons for comparable uses.”

    Basically Jordan’s camp is saying that he would never do a deal for less than $10 million, matching up with how he’s done it in the last decade. Since 2002, Nike has paid him $480 million, Sirius radio $25 million, Gatorade $18 million, Hanes $14 million, Upper Deck $14 million, XEL (a fragrance company) $10.6 million, it was revealed during discussions in the courtroom on Wednesday.

    ast Friday, in a courthouse in New Mexico, special prosecutor Randi McGinn asked police psychologist William Lewinski whether he advised investigators to wait several days before interviewing an officer involved in a shooting. McGinn was asking because two Albuquerque police officers shot and killed a homeless man on March 16, 2014, in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains, and they had been told to wait two days before giving a statement. The lag in time seemed odd to McGinn, who is pursuing murder charges against the officers.

    Lewinski, founder of the research group Force Science Institute, is a controversial figure among prosecutors like McGinn. Recently, he came under fire for publishing studies that critics said were not subject to peer review, and for using those studies in his work as an expert witness when testifying on behalf of officers involved in shootings. Lewinski responded to McGinn’s question by saying, “That’s what the professionals and the experts in law also state.” He added that “if you can eliminate bias, memory aids such as walking through a scene, looking at video—the things that are currently used in the police practice—do enhance memory.”
