    I wrote a few days ago just how much I admire and respect the way President Carter models that equal partnership with his wife of 69 years Rosalynn – not just personally, but in their professional life as well. Hard to believe that this man of a certain age and from a certain time, would be at the forefront of equality for women – and not just talk the talk, but fully walk the walk as evidenced by years of consistently leading by example with his visible and unapologetic positioning of wife Rosalynn as his equal partner.

    Rosalynn Carter sat in on her husband’s White House Cabinet and Policy meetings. She served as an envoy abroad, representing her husband at meetings at home and abroad, and with foreign leaders.

    The Presidential Freedom Medal was awarded not just to Jimmy Carter, but to Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter – as a couple.

    As we celebrate Women’s Equality Day tomorrow, I want to honor and thank former President Jimmy Carter for being way ahead of his time. For not just humoring and patronizing women, but leading by example, and fully, unflinchingly, unapologetically and lovingly living out and exemplifying this worn-out call that women be treated as equals, in the example he has always set and continues to set with Rosalynn his wife of 69 years.

        Jorge spends too much time looking for the mythical Republican candidate. It hurts his heart that not only is Trump leading, but nobody else is taking him on, and saying that everything he’s saying about Latinos is ‘wrong’.

        I have little to no sympathy for Ramos.

    BALTIMORE CITY — The letter arrived in April last year, a mishmash of strange numbers and words. This at first did not alarm Rose. Most letters are that way for her — frustrating puzzles she can’t solve. Rose, who can scarcely read or write, calls herself a “lead kid.” Her childhood home, where lead paint chips blanketed her bedsheets like snowflakes, “affected me really bad,” she says. “In everything I do.”

    She says she can’t work a professional job. She can’t live alone. And, she says, she surely couldn’t understand this letter.

    So on that April day, the 20-year-old says she asked her mom to give it a look. Her mother glanced at the words, then back at her daughter. “What does this mean all of your payments were sold to a third party?” her mother recalls saying.

    The distraught woman said the letter, written by her insurance company, referred to Rose’s lead checks. The family had settled a lead-paint lawsuit against one notorious Baltimore slumlord in 2007, granting Rose a monthly check of nearly $1,000, with yearly increases. Those payments were guaranteed for 35 years.

    “It’s been sold?” Rose asked, memories soon flashing.

    She remembered a nice, white man. He had called her one day on the telephone months after she’d squeaked through high school with a “one-point something” grade-point average. His name was Brendan, though she said he never mentioned his last name. He told her she could make some fast money. He told her he worked for a local company named Access Funding. He talked to her as a friend.

    Rose, who court records say suffers from “irreversible brain damage,” didn’t have a lot of friends. She didn’t trust many people. Growing up off North Avenue in West Baltimore, she said she’s seen people killed.

    But Brendan was different. He bought her a fancy meal at Longhorn Steakhouse, she said, and guaranteed a vacation for the family. He seemed like a gentleman, someone she said she could trust .

    One day soon after, a notary arrived at her house and slid her a 12-page “purchase” agreement. Rose was alone. But she wasn’t worried. She said she spoke to a lawyer named Charles E. Smith on the phone about the contract. She felt confident in what it stated. She was selling some checks in the distant future for some quick money, right?

    The reality, however, was substantially different. Rose sold everything to Access Funding — 420 monthly lead checks between 2017 and 2052. They amounted to a total of nearly $574,000 and had a present value of roughly $338,000.

    In return, Access Funding paid her less than $63,000.

    A flock of two dozen mad-as-hell supporters of Donald Trump agreed to assemble on Monday night in a political consultant’s office to explain their passion for the Republican frontrunner. Gathered in a corporate-looking room with the shades drawn, they railed against Washington politicians who hire consultants, and sang their admiration for the one presidential candidate who promises to go his own way.

    “I think America is pissed. Trump’s the first person that came out and voiced exactly what everybody’s been saying all along,” one man said. “When he talks, deep down somewhere you’re going, ‘Holy crap, someone is thinking the same way I am.’”

    Frank Luntz, a fast-talking Republican pollster who frequently appears on television and writes newspaper op-eds, urged them on. When did you first decide you liked Trump? he asked. And why are you mad as hell?

    “When Trump talks, it may not be presented in a pristine, PC way, but we’ve been having that crap pushed to us for the past 40 years!” said another man. “He’s saying what needs to be said.”

    This 29-person focus group, conducted by Luntz and observed by a group of national press reporters from behind a pane of one-way glass, had gathered to explain the phenomenon of Trump. Why is a billionaire real estate mogul, TV celebrity and oft-accused demagogue who has never held office leading the Republican field with some 22% support in the polls?

    Private colleges keep police policies and procedures under wraps

    Private universities in Chicago are keeping even the most basic information about how their armed officers are supposed to do their jobs from the public, despite promises to increase transparency.

    In April, University of Chicago announced that it would begin releasing information about “how the [university police] department fulfills its duties.” The move was intended to mollify student and community activists—and headed off a bill in the state legislature that would have required them to release the same information to the public that municipal police departments do.

    This month, the Reporter tested that pledge of transparency by asking U of C and the other two private universities in Chicago with armed, sworn police departments—Northwestern and Loyola—to provide us with a copy of their departments’ policies, procedures and directives, the documents that govern a police officer’s day-to-day duties and responsibilities. All three denied our request.

    A U of C spokeswoman said in an email that releasing department policies is not considered a “best practice.”

    But President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing said the opposite in its final report released in May. The eleven-member committee, which included police chiefs, law professors and civil rights advocates, recommended that law enforcement agencies make department policies, along with data on stops and arrests by police, available for public review.

    “This isn’t some radical, far-out thing,” said Craig Futterman, director of the University of Chicago Law School’s Civil Rights and Police Accountability Project. “It’s sort of a basic concept of transparency and openness and accountability that people have the right to know about the practices and policies of their police who are sworn to protect them.”

    ALEA to begin closing driver’s license offices; 4 to remain open

    …The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said budget cuts will result in closing driver’s license offices across the state.

    The agency said the cut will be in phases, with 33 offices closed during the first wave.

    In January 2016, a further 12 offices will close. By March, all but four offices in the entire state will shut their doors.

    The offices that will remain open, ALEA said, are Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Birmingham.

    “Unfortunately, what citizens can expect are longer lines, oftentimes scheduling way in advance to get an opportunity,” said ALEA Secretary Spencer Collier. “Probably the worst is that some… are going to have to travel a significant distance to be able to get that driver’s license service.”

    Racially Disparate Views of New Orleans’s Recovery After Hurricane Katrina

    NEW ORLEANS — As the 10th anniversary approaches of Hurricane Katrina and the catastrophic levee breaches in New Orleans, a new survey finds a stark racial divide in how residents here view the recovery.

    Nearly four out of five white residents believe the city has mostly recovered, while nearly three out of five blacks say it has not, a division sustained over a variety of issues including the local economy, the state of schools and the quality of life.

    The survey, which was conducted by the Public Policy Research Lab at Louisiana State University, was released on Monday. The hurricane and the failure of the New Orleans levees on Aug. 29, 2005, caused more than 1,800 deaths across the coast and damaged or destroyed more than a million houses and businesses.

    But the uplifting narrative is not shared by many of those who live here, particularly African-Americans. The L.S.U. survey echoes both what has been quantified elsewhere — such as a recent survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation and NPR that also found a racial gap in attitudes — and what is apparent by simply spending time in different neighborhoods around the city.

    While a plurality of New Orleans residents rate the quality of life as about the same as before Katrina, the L.S.U. survey reports, more than one-third of blacks say it has gotten worse. The percentage of whites who believe their quality of life has improved, at 41 percent, is more than double the percentage of blacks who say the same thing.

      The natural heir to a 2-term President is always the V.P.

      It is Hillary who’s playing usurper in this scenario – something that would have been railed and raged against by the usual suspects had Hillary been V.P and anyone else dared to position themselves ahead of her..

      The idea that we must be force-fed a woman president – very specifically, a specific woman – and only because we happened to elect a black man last time, is bizarre…

      This can only be best summed up as the same bitter, entitled, aggressive mindset and the after effect of that white feminist cry of those suffrage years “…I’ll be damned if Sambo gets in before me…”

    LAS VEGAS (AP) — President Barack Obama is putting people on notice: He’s back from vacation feeling “refreshed, renewed, recharged” — and “a little feisty.”

    He immediately showed his feisty side.

    At a Democratic fundraiser Monday night in Nevada, Obama declared himself ready for the challenges he faces this fall in dealing with a Republican Congress that disagrees with him on the budget, energy policy, education and much more.

    Obama said that as he’d ridden to the fundraiser with Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, they’d done some reminiscing and spent some time “figuring out how we are going to deal with the crazies in terms of managing some problems.”

    He didn’t identify exactly who the two of them had defined as “crazies.”

    Jeb Bush aggressively defended his use of the term “anchor babies” during a trip Monday to the U.S.-Mexico border, saying the term describes fraudulent immigration “more related to Asian people.”

    “This is ludicrous for the [Hillary] Clinton campaign and others to suggest that somehow I am using a derogatory term,” the presidential candidate said after a roundtable with local officials on border security and immigration in McAllen, Texas.

    “What I’m talking about is the specific case of fraud being committed where there’s organized efforts — frankly it’s more related to Asian people — coming into our country, having children in that organized effort, taking advantage of that noble concept, which is birthright citizenship.”

    Teen girl suicide bomber hits Nigeria bus station

    DAMATURU, Nigeria — Police said a girl suicide bomber killed five people Tuesday in an attack at the crowded entrance to a bus station in Damaturu in northeast Nigeria.

    Assistant Superintendent Toyin Gbagedesin said 41 people were wounded in the Tuesday morning explosion.

    He said the bomber appeared to be about 14 years old. Suspicion fell quickly on the ISIS-aligned extremist group Boko Haram.

    Nigeria’s homegrown Islamic extremist group has used dozens of girls and women in recent suicide bombings in Nigeria and neighboring Chad, Cameroon and Niger, raising fears it is using kidnap victims.

    More than 1,000 have been killed since President Muhammadu Buhari was elected in March with a pledge to annihilate the militants.

    Bombings and village raids blamed on Boko Haram have killed hundreds in recent weeks as officials promise the deployment of a regional army to halt the group that has killed some 20,000 in six years and spilled across the West African nation’s borders.

    Lynn Whitfield, Merle Dandridge and Desiree Ross are the first actors to be cast in OWN’s upcoming original scripted drama series
    “Greenleaf.”

    First announced last month, OWN has given a
    straight-to-series order for what it calls a megachurch drama, which
    will unfold over a 13-episode season.

    The project comes from Craig Wright (“Six Feet Under,” “Lost”), and
    will follow “the unscrupulous world of the Greenleaf family and their
    sprawling Memphis megachurch, where scandalous secrets and lies are as numerous as the faithful. Greenleaf described is the center of the community for the thousands of predominantly African-American members who attend services there. But beneath its steeple lies a den of iniquity — greed, adultery, sibling rivalry and conflicting values.”

    Whitfield has been cast to play Bishop Greenleaf’s wife Lady Mae, described as “a steely woman who loves money and power and will do absolutely anything to protect her position as the First Lady of Greenleaf World Ministries.”

    Jay Ellis and Yvonne Orji have signed up to join Issa Rae in her HBO comedy pilot “Insecure.”

    The series, which was officially given a pilot order earlier this year, likely won’t be coming to a TV screen near you until late 2016, or even early 2017. So, sadly, if you were expecting something next TV season (2015/2016) – although you really shouldn’t have been, if you’ve been reading this blog – you’ll have to update your calendar to reflect today’s news.

    Of course, the pilot, once complete, still has to be ordered to series. So, assuming HBO loves the pilot and wants a full series (cross your fingers), don’t expect to see anything until, at the earliest, the 2016/2017 TV season. HBO president of programming Michael Lombardo has said that he’s “very hopeful” that the pilot will be good.

    Ellis has been cast as “Lawrence,” who will be Issa Rae’s character’s (also named Issa) depressed and unemployed boyfriend, struggling to get his act together; and Yvonne Orji will play “Molly,” best friend to Issa’s character, a successful career woman who isn’t as successful in her love life.
