Thursday Open Thread |Hillary Clinton’s 5 takes on the Keystone Pipeline

How Clinton wanrs to turn Obamacare into Hillarycare 2.0Washington (CNN)Hillary Clinton moved from being “inclined” to support the controversial Keystone XL pipeline to announcing Tuesday that she’d oppose it. The move that comes as the former secretary of state seeks the Democratic presidential nomination and felt pressure from rival candidates as well as environmentalists and progressives.

October 2010: We’re “inclined” to back it

“We haven’t finish all of the analysis,” Clinton, then secretary of state, told the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. “So as I say, we’ve not yet signed off on it. But we are inclined to do so and we are for several reasons.”

June 2014: “I can’t respond” but we’re “trying to get it right”

“I can’t really comment at great length because I had responsibility for it and it’s been passed on and it wouldn’t be appropriate, but I hope that Canadians appreciate that the United States government — the Obama administration — is trying to get it right,” Clinton told Canada’s The Globe and Mail as she promoted her book, Hard Choices. When asked if she personally agreed with the pipeline, she said, “I can’t respond.”

January 2015: “I’m not going to express an opinion”

“We have differences and you won’t get me to talk about Keystone because I have steadily made clear that I’m not going to express an opinion,” she told an audience in Winnipeg. “It is in our process and that’s where it belongs.”

July 2015: “If it is undecided when I become president, I will answer your question”

“I am not going to second guess (President Barack Obama) because I was in a position to set this in motion,” Clinton said just two months ago in New Hampshire. “I want to wait and see what he and Secretary (John) Kerry decide.”

She added, “If it is undecided when I become president, I will answer your question

September : “I oppose it

“I think it is imperative that we look at the Keystone pipeline as what I believe it is — a distraction from important work we have to do on climate change,” Clinton said Tuesday in Des Moines, Iowa. “And unfortunately from my perspective, one that interferes with our ability to move forward with all the other issues. Therefore I oppose it.”

20 THINGS I’M CONVINCED TARAJI P HENSON WOULD DO FOR YOU IF SHE WERE YOUR HOMEGIRL
    Diana Veiga, 9/24/15

I fell in love with Taraji P. Henson when she played “I know who stole my car, Jody!” Yvette in Baby Boy. Her character was the perfect blend of attitude and vulnerability, while playing a woman who was doing the most to make her man ‘do right.’

Over the years, Taraji played a ton of roles and began to become more and more known in the mainstream world. However, she never changed her style, her flow, or her persona. In interviews she was always funny, down-to-earth, and just real. Southeast D.C. stand up!

She finally got the role of a lifetime playing Cookie in Fox’s Empire. You know Empire. It’s the show everyone’s watching and if you’re not watching you’re bragging about not watching. Taraji playing an animal print wearing, straight out a 90’s Lil’ Kim video, don’t take no shit won’t be no shit Cookie has you wondering if she’s doing any acting at all. Like where does Taraji end and Cookie began? The lines seem blurred for sure.

But everything was made clear when Taraji presented Regina King with an Emmy award on Sunday. Taraji, in the spirit of sisterhood and all that is holy, stood on that stage and clapped furiously while letting out a single yasssss in front of a majority White audience. That’s when I looked up from my TV and was like, “Oh Taraji is a real one.”

White GOPer: We Can Beat Black US Rep By Adding More Prisoners To Her District

A white Florida Republican suggested knocking a black, longtime Democratic congresswoman out of her seat by gerrymandering more prisoners into her district, according to audio obtained by Politico and published on Wednesday.

Politico reported that state Rep. Janet Adkins (R) made the suggestion regarding U.S. Rep. Corrinne Brown’s (D) district in a closed-door meeting of the North Florida Republican caucus.

“It’s a perfect storm,” Adkins said on the audio recording. “You draw it in such a fashion so perhaps, a majority, or maybe not a majority, but a number of them will live in the prisons, thereby not being able to vote.”

Professor Advises Black Women to Give Up on Black Men in New Book (Watch)

    09/23/2015 BRAINUSER1

Stanford University professor Ralph Richard Banks has written a book called “is Marriage for white People? How the African American Marriage Decline Affects Everyone.” In a video promoting the book, Banks says “It’s time for black women to give up the good fight on marrying a black man.”

The author says black women have been carrying the burden of many of the black man’s struggles, and this is something that they should break free from.

You can imagine all the hell this raised.

In the video Banks says women think they are attracted to black men; and admits they are, but then talks about how “complicated” attraction is.

“One of the things that I discovered in the course of writing this book is that there is a whole host of fears and desires and anxieties that animate the black woman’s attraction to black men,” Banks claims.

What, you ask, does that mean?

Good for wonderful couples like Lamar and Ronnie Tyler; It is sad indeed that this rubbish is what so-called smart black professors choose to perpetuate…

Even sadder that there’s an all out war on strong black marriages – and depressing and discouraging the beauty and greatness of them by chipping away in various ways at existing ones so that there’s always an asterisk (denoting a disclaimer and not quite as great as we thought), always attached when they are put out there as examples –

No coincidence the recent slew of grocery gossip rags consistently attacking prominent black marriages – Can’t have them as the great role models for marriage and families…

And don’t even get me started on the handlers/staff who instead of promoting a famous black *married* man as a great husband and father, choose instead to market him as an available ‘sex’ symbol…essentially downplaying and diminishing the wife, while playing up the husband as a solo entity as a way to keep him ‘attractive’ to certain demographics.. A very dangerous, damaging, short-sighted and hardly effective move in the long-term..

      • Ametia says:

It’s been the goal for ions to keep Black men & women apart. Too much power when the 2 are together, strong, loving, intelligent, empowered, successful.

Me & hubby keep it tight & when we are out and about together, we keep that bond, our connection, that love & dedicated, Soulful consciousness INTACT.

No one cant penetrate it. See folks can’t get in , unless we let them in.

      • eliihass says:

        Isn’t that the truth Ametia…

But it takes a strong, wise, mature, devoted and self-respecting man to help ensure that.. A lion of a man who immediately claps back on any attempt by anyone to disrespect or in any way diminish his wife and marriage..

If only more men realized that there’s nothing more attractive and sexy than a man who is not only entirely devoted to his wife, but unabashedly and unapologetically adores her…

…A man who’s unavailable and unattainable because he is completely dedicated to, and into his own wife…that is the most appealing type of man…

But few of the mouth-runners actually have something to show for all that talk. So don’t even bother listening to the next broke-ass individual that tries to tell you how to go about making money.
I just had to get that off my chest before I introduce ( or re-introduce) you to Jaylen D. Bledsoe. Yes people, it is possible to learn about the road to success from a 17-year-old. Education Gap Between Rich and Poor Is Growing Wider
    SEPT. 22, 2015

The wounds of segregation were still raw in the 1970s. With only rare exceptions, African-American children had nowhere near the same educational opportunities as whites.

The civil rights movement, school desegregation and the War on Poverty helped bring a measure of equity to the playing field. Today, despite some setbacks along the way, racial disparities in education have narrowed significantly. By 2012, the test-score deficit of black 9-, 13- and 17-year-olds in reading and math had been reduced as much as 50 percent compared with what it was 30 to 40 years before.

Achievements like these breathe hope into our belief in the Land of Opportunity. They build trust in education as a leveling force powering economic mobility. “We do have a track record of reducing these inequalities,” said Jane Waldfogel, a professor of social work at Columbia University.

But the question remains: Why did we stop there?

I LOVE NATURE. I’m a farm girl,so bear with me.

Humans really can learn so much by OBSERVING it.

Take a tree and what the leaves and branches endure from the elements.

Leaves cling to the trees against the winds in spring, but winds takes them anyway.

Notice how the trees in winter shed all its leaves and the branches fall naturally, fully exposed. But as nature will have it, the leaves and branches return in the spring.

If we shed our habits & attachments without having to be blown about and snapped into, life is less painful, like nature it’s cyclical, as is God’s will.

Economic power alone has the most interesting effects on people who would otherwise arrogantly and completely ignore one…Take for instance Bill and Melinda Gates who’ve never had time for their own country’s current President and First Lady, but showed up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and very enthusiastically bowed and sufficiently sucked up to former opera singer turned first lady Peng Liyuan – even without her husband Xi Jinping in sight…(Meanwhile, perhaps White House staff could learn a thing or two on how this automatic extension of respect to the President’s wife works)

The great and all-consuming and all-controlling power of economic power – no matter how begotten – or how unethical or corrupt those who wield it are – … even on billionaires! Heaven help the small people…

MADISON — Gov. Scott Walker is telling Republican state Assembly members that he supports a plan making it easier to fire state workers as part of a rewrite of the law governing the hiring and firing process.

Walker spoke about the plan during a 15-minute speech to Assembly Republicans on Thursday.

Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke and Sen. Roger Roth are preparing a bill that would eliminate exams for prospective state workers, shift hiring authority from state agencies to the Department of Administration and define “just cause” for terminations

Why Kentucky’s Kim Davis won’t find a different job
    09/24/15 08:40 AM—UPDATED 09/24/15 08:44 AM
    By Steve Benen
One of the oddities of the Kim Davis story in Kentucky is the obvious remedy. The Kentucky clerk has a job in which she’s supposed to issue marriage licenses, but Davis doesn’t want to issue licenses to couples she deems morally inadequate. So why doesn’t Davis find some other job in which her responsibilities won’t conflict with her religious views?

Indeed, given her public notoriety, if she asked far-right leaders for a paid position somewhere, Davis probably wouldn’t have much trouble landing another gig – one which her conscience would be comfortable with.

Last night, the clerk explained her perspective.
Kentucky clerk Kim Davis on Wednesday night explained to Fox News’ Megyn Kelly why she has still refused to resign despite numerous failed attempts to receive an accommodation for her religious beliefs.

“If I resign I lose my voice,” Davis said. “Why should I have to quit a job that I love, that I’m good at?”

I imagine that was a rhetorical question, but the answer isn’t exactly complicated. If you have a job that requires you to do things you consider morally objectionable, you have a choice: meet your professional obligations anyway or find a different job. Davis’ argument is that she should continue to be paid to perform duties she refuses to do – to the point that she’s comfortable defying court rulings, her oath of office, and court orders.

Rove: Shutdown over Planned Parenthood would be a ‘disaster’
By Rebecca Shabad – 09/23/15 08:53 PM EDT

GOP strategist Karl Rove on Wednesday said a government shutdown over defunding Planned Parenthood would be a “disaster for the pro-life cause.”

In an op-ed published by The Wall Street Journal, Rove argued that while conservatives’ demands to defund the group are legitimate, their tactics are not.

“Republicans in Congress who want to risk a shutdown over Planned Parenthood have an obligation to spell out how they would get it done. They can’t,” Rove wrote. “That’s why any Republicans who engineer a shutdown will be unwitting allies of the abortion movement.”

Rove, former deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush, cited recent polls that indicated majorities of the public oppose cutting off funding to Planned Parenthood and oppose a government shutdown that would result from the defunding strategy.

Most Of The Radical Ideas The Black Panthers Had Are Now Totally Mainstream

    by Carimah Townes Sep 23, 2015 8:00am

For decades since their inception in the 1960s, members of the liberation group known as the Black Panthers were labeled thugs and hateful extremists who set out to ruin the U.S. They were considered the antithesis to Martin Luther King Jr. — armed and dangerous. And that’s how many people still remember them today.

But a new documentary, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, dives into the rise and fall of the Panthers’ political agenda, offering a counter-narrative that’s more timely than ever.

Combining interviews with former members of the party with archival footage of Panther activity, Stanley Nelson’s documentary explores the white supremacy and state-sanctioned police violence that inspired a revolutionary movement — and how that movement redefined black power and pride.

It talks about the key players — founders Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, one of the most vocal and recognizable Panthers, and women like Elaine Brown and Kathleen Cleaver who switched up traditional gender roles and actually dominated the party. The party created the Ten Point Program, a platform that served as the blueprint for uplifting the black community through job creation and social services.

The film pulls back the curtain on COINTELPRO, the government-backed FBI campaign initiated by J. Edgar Hoover to destroy the Panthers. By following every move they made (via wire tapping and planting spies in the organization), falsely imprisoning them, and murdering them outright, the counterintelligence program sought “to expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize the activities of black nationalist hate-type organizations and groupings.” Hoover, on behalf of the U.S. government, was hellbent on “[preventing] the rise of a messiah who could unify, and electrify, the militant black nationalist movement.”

The film also hones in on what made the organization famous: the Panthers’ militant approach to fighting systemic racism — and their arsenal of weapons.

The conventional wisdom tells us that Donald Trump’s days as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination are numbered. His collapse is imminent. The air will escape this balloon soon. Any minute now. You’ll see.

And while it remains entirely possible, if not likely, that Trump’s GOP support will eventually evaporate, that day has not yet arrived. Late yesterday, Fox News released the results of its new national poll, taken after last week’s debate.

    1. Donald Trump: 26% (up one point from last month)
    2. Ben Carson: 18% (up six points)

She really is political and vague here. It is as if she is leaving the option of being “for” the pipeline open. That is, in the future, she could just say that she is “for” it because “we” have moved forward with all of the other issues.

(The political part is that she doesn’t want to lose campaign money. There is the potential for campaign money from oil interests, natural-gas interests, and railroad-presently-transporting-oil interests. )
