    Richest Woman In This Country Is Daughter of Anti-Capitalist

    Hugo Chavez died in 2013. Prior to his death, the former president of Venezuela was highly critical of America, capitalism, and acquiring wealth.

    The latest earthquake in Venezuela may not have been an earthquake, but Chavez turning over in his grave. Just two years after the passing of this anti-wealth revolutionary, Chavez’s daughter has been named by the Miami-based, Spanish-language paper Diario Las América as “the single wealthiest individual in Venezuela.”

    Perhaps everybody in Venezuela is just really, really poor? No, Gustavo Cisneros is a Venezuelan telecommunications mogul worth over $3.5 billion and Lorenzo Mendoza made over $2.7 billion in the beverage industry. María Gabriela Chávez, however, with her bank accounts in Venezuela, the United States and the European tax haven, Andorra, puts them to shame with a net worth totaling well over $4 billion USD.

    Despite her great wealth, she still promotes the socialist lifestyle her father forced upon the people. Worse, her wealth is allegedly made upon the backs of the people. Just last year she earned over $15 million in a business scandal, allegedly selling overpriced rice to her fellow Venezuelans.

    Chavez’s response, “They speak about millions, about inheritance, about riches… and they think they insult us. They’re such simple beings that they have no inkling about the bigger riches that you always gave me and that you left me.”

    The gap between the have’s and the have-not’s in the United States is large, but we proclaim the benefits of capitalism. The economic disparity in Venezuela is staggering, and those “simple beings” are told to deal with it by their socialist leaders. Maybe they need to stand up and put an end to the tyranny, but it doesn’t look like it will be happening anytime soon, and may get worse if Chavez becomes the nation’s next president, an aspiration that she is rumored to have as soon as the nation’s next elections.

      And the oldest daughter of the Angolan dictator dos Santos, is a billionaire and the 8th wealthiest person in Africa… this from a country where the standard of living remains the lowest for the vast majority of its population, and life expectancy and infant mortality rates among the worst in the world…

    How Persistence Enabled Robert F. Smith To Become The 2nd Richest Black Man In America

    When students think about becoming rich, many of today’s youth think about sports and music. Rightfully so. Many of today’s athletes are commanding salaries that are huge and music artists are right there with them. Even in today’s world where computers are part of most everything we do and the richest man in the world is a computer geek, many students continue to look past the academician when thinking about who is going to make the most money in their class.

    Robert F. Smith did not let perceptions stop him. Not only did he know what he wanted to do, he knew where he wanted to do it. Smith was a junior at East High School in Denver when he started to call Bell Labs. Bell Labs had an office in Denver and they were the ones who had invented the transistor. They told him that he was not old enough for an internship and even his A’s in math and computer science could not change their policy. He would have to wait until he was an upperclassman in college.

    Smith started calling every day until they stopped taking his calls. He changed tactics and called only on Mondays. He did this for months on end. Then, one day, a college student did not show up for work and Bell’s HR department relented. They called Smith for an interview.

    “I ran my own race. I knew what I wanted, and my persistence paid off, and I came in and interviewed. They liked me, and I got the internship,” Smith said. He interned there for the next four years.

    What became of this stubborn young man? He founded, and is still the chairman and chief executive of, Vista Equity Partners in Austin, Texas. Now 52 years old, Smith is the 2nd richest black American behind only Oprah, and the 268th richest American. Even sports icons like Michael Jordan have been bumped aside on the list of global billionaires.

    Sports figures and musicians may get center stage, but brains still come out on top. It’s been said, “Be nice to geeks, one day you will work for one of them.” Robert Smith helps prove that point.

    I recently watched a video of First Lady Michelle Obama asking young girls around the world to focus on their education, at “The Power of an Educated Girl” panel in New York City.
    “There is no boy at this age that is cute enough or interesting enough to stop you from getting your education,” she said. “If I had worried about who liked me and who thought I was cute when I was your age, I wouldn’t be married to the president of the United States.”

    The message in the video struck a chord with me. But what actually hit home was that I didn’t receive the link for this video through an American source. On Sept. 30, my Facebook home page was brimming with Obama’s video — almost every Indian girlfriend of mine, sitting 7,000 miles away from where the action was taking place, had proudly shared the post on her profile. Obama made a statement aimed at American girls, and within minutes it reached the ears of girls in the remaining parts of the world. This is the access one receives with education and empowerment. This is the power of literacy.

    I come from a country that revolves around its women. Whether we’re talking about girl infanticide, rape, illiteracy, festivals that are solely dedicated to girls or even just the law, India cannot stop talking about its ladies. While most of the things I mentioned above are negative in their connotation, at least people are talking about them. At least people are aware. And that really is the very first step to overcoming any obstacle.

      She takes a subject and effortlessly distills it in such a way that anyone listening, gets it.

      She speaks and hugs in such a clear and unambiguous way – her message reaches and cuts across cultures and continents..

      She’s not trying to impress you with some desperate affectation, or highfalutin b.s designed to win the approval of anyone – and especially not of the self-appointed approvers..

      Her concern has always been and remains young people who don’t typically have advantages or access to the advantages for success our society offers..

      So much for the attempts by desperate “journalist” wannabes at the Daily Beast trying to drown out her important message by insisting that all they got from her entire powerful words was FLOTUS giving ‘bad marriage advice’. And the typical feminist b.s of how she’s downplaying her own independent accomplishments and essentially telling young girls to go to college to ‘up’ their chances of ‘marrying well’ – taking her completely out of context by the way, and leaving out the many powerful statements she made including investing in education so that one isn’t a 60 year old woman without options..

    ‘Pretendian’: Meet Susan Taffe Reed, the ‘Native American’ Rachel Dolezal

    Dartmouth announced Thursday that Reed, its newly hired Native American Program director, would no longer be in that position after several tribal officials and Dartmouth alumni argued that she was not Native American.

    Stop me if you’ve heard this before.

    Woman hired into a top-level position for a job with heavy racial focus is let go after people protest whether said woman is, in fact, being truthful about her race.

    On Thursday, Dartmouth announced that newly hired Native American Program Director Susan Taffe Reed, who claimed she was part Native American and European, would no longer be in that position after several Native American tribes and Dartmouth alumni questioned her ancestry and tribal affiliation, the Valley News reports.

    According to the news site, Reed claimed she was president of the Eastern Delaware Nations and, the Wall Street Journal notes, that one of her roles at the Ivy League college was to have used her position to help Native American students adjust to college life.

    On Sept. 11, Dartmouth announced Reed’s new position. Tribal officials and Dartmouth alumni immediately began protesting and questioning Reed’s qualifications, noting that Eastern Delaware Nations is a nonprofit group that acknowledges it isn’t a tribe, and saying that Reed was misrepresenting herself as part American Indian.

    “I personally have no problem with a non-Indian getting the job on her own merits,” Keely Squirrel Denning, a Shawnee tribe member, told the Valley News. Denning researched Reed’s origins and told the news site that her grandparents were part of the Eastern Delaware Nations but that they appear to be Irish immigrants.

    Denning called Reed’s misrepresentation a “slap in the face,” the Valley News reports.

    According to the Wall Street Journal, many Native American Dartmouth alumni consider the Eastern Delaware Nations to be a group of “pretendians,” made up of many members who are not affiliated with any tribes.

    House GOP faces drama in unsettled race for Speaker

    Almost immediately after House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) shocked the political world with his unprecedented resignation announcement, attention turned to his successor. Party leaders, fearing a leadership vacuum, wasted no time in making clear that House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was poised to get a promotion.

    But with four days remaining until the behind-closed-doors, secret-ballot election, uncertainty reigns.

    Last week, McCarthy did himself no favors, accidentally telling the truth about his party’s Benghazi scheme and then clumsily trying (and failing) to clean up his mess. But the more Republicans were confronted with doubts about whether the Californian is genuinely up for such an important job, the more they were confronted with the realization that he had no credible rivals for the post.

    At least, he didn’t. With only a few days left to campaign, the dynamic has changed.
    Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah has thrown a curveball into the race for House speaker, officially announcing on Sunday that he’ll take on House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy for the high-profile position.

    Chaffetz, who chairs the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, painted himself as an outsider and argued on “Fox News Sunday” that he can better “bridge the divide” between moderate and far-right GOPers.

    To be sure, the odds do not appear to favor the Utah Republican, who has even less experience than the inexperienced McCarthy. Chaffetz, however, has at least chaired a committee – something McCarthy, incredibly, has never done – and the Utahan has broader support among social conservatives in the GOP caucus.

He wants us to get ulcers and high blood pressure because that is the only thing I can think of when Cosmopolitan decided to have their latest cover feature the Kardashians, and the headline being “America’s First Family.” I am here to tell their entire editorial staff to occupy every seat this side of the Equator.

    Dear Cosmopolitan,

    You cannot be serious. I mean this has to be a satirical issue and you must have hired comics from The Onion to help you write it because you really put the Kardashians on your cover and called them “America’s First Family.” I saw it and my head almost exploded in disbelief. It’s one of those things that you have to stare at for awhile because surely it is in nothing but jest.

    This is an insult to America and anyone with sense. What are the Kardashians the First Family of? First Family of Plastic Surgery? First Family of Attention Magnets? First Family of Doing the Most with the Absolute Least? First Family of Can’t Have a Damb Seat? First Family of All Fake Everything? First Family of Why Are You Still Famous? First Family of NAWL? They are NOT my damb First Family. NO MA’AM.

    How vapid are we? How shallow can we get as a country when you’re calling the people who have been made famous for being desperados for attention our First Family? The only talent amongst them all is the ability to stay relevant in spite of a dearth of talent. That and Kris Jenner’s gift of turning anything bad into an opportunity for capitalizing.

      Co-sign. But I’m not surprised by any of this. Donald Trump is considered to be a serious presidential candidate. Before him, Sarah Palin was on the GOP presidential ticket in 2008. So now Cosmopolitan is hawking reality TV people as our “America’s First Family.” If there is anything at all to learn from American media, it is that they can always sink lower and there is no limit to what they will do for money.

These should be quickly and permanently removed from our lives, thus making room for the ones that truly matter. To determine if a relationship is toxic, there are some pretty clear signals to be aware of.

    So let’s begin by defining “toxic relationship.” Health Scope magazine defines a toxic relationship as, “a relationship characterized by behaviors on the part of the toxic partner that are emotionally and, not infrequently, physically damaging to their partner.”

    In summary, a healthy relationship contributes positively to our self-esteem, gives energy, and adds to overall happiness, while a toxic relationship damages self-esteem, drains energy, and provokes negativity on multiple levels.

    If you want to keep your circle up, avoid the following toxic relationships:

    The Inherent Hater

    All of us know people who love to watch someone else fail or falter, then gossip and spread rumors about the failings (both perceived and real) of others. Individuals like these are clearly unhappy in their lives and to avoid dealing with their own reality they focus on any and everyone else, especially people they call friends.

    In fact, it is easier to gossip about friends because they know your business and with strangers they can only speculate. Anyone who would tear a friend down for any reason is not a true friend and is not someone you need in your life.

    Terrence Southern Wants to Fill the World With Black Scientists

    The 37-year-old robotics engineer owes his career success to mentors, and now he’s paying it forward by giving support to the next generation.

    What will it take for African Americans to close the achievement gap in science, technology, engineering and math? It’s a complex issue that experts say involves, among other factors, the public education system, poverty and teachers’ unconscious racial bias.

    So far, the solutions have been elusive. But there’s a consensus that mentorship is a key.

    Terrence Southern, 37, knows the challenges that lie ahead for the next generation regarding STEM. He’s a robotics engineer with 15 years in the tech industry who grew up in Detroit, where his dreams were nurtured by an eighth-grade teacher. He wants to be that kind of support for as many young people as possible.

    He works currently for GE Transportation as a robotics and automation engineer. But the wealth of his experience came at General Motors in his hometown. In his first position at GM at age 23, he led a robotics team tasked with conducting multimillion-dollar projects. A mentor, who’s now a close friend, guided him around the land mines he encountered.

    Southern recalls that he was almost always “the only black kid in the room” at GM. He says some of his colleagues had trouble with not only his skin color but also his youth. They expected—even hoped—that Southern would fail.

    Instead, he succeeded at every challenge with flying colors. “But five, seven years later, they would continue to question me as they did in my first year,” he recollects—reliving the frustration. “I asked myself what I would have to do to gain their trust, and for them to know that I’m capable.”

    Reflecting, Southern believes he would have probably failed without his mentor, Ray Roberts, a GM manager. Southern says, “He told me up front, ‘They’re going to try different things to shake your faith, shake your confidence and put you

    Jesse Williams Discusses Biracial Privileges and Social Justice: ‘Black Americans Are Not Angry. They Are Hurting’

    He’s not running away from, or ashamed of, the insight he’s gained as a black activist who is half-white.

    It has always been a pet peeve of mine when biracial people seem to ignore their white side and act as if the world perceives them as black through and through. I always felt that in their determination to identify solely and sternly as black, they were missing out on an opportunity to share some of the insight they may have about how white people feel and think about race relations. That they might be missing out on an opportunity to act as a conduit between both racial groups.

    In an interview with The Guardian, Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams does a fantastic job of articulating the privileges and insights that being biracial affords him, and how he uses that knowledge to inform his work as an activist in working-class black communities. Williams’ mom is white, and his dad is black.

    “I have access to rooms and information. I am white and I am also black. I am invisible man in a lot of these scenarios,” Williams said, referring to the Ralph Ellison classic. “I know how white people talk about black people. I know how black people talk about white folks. I know I am there and everyone speaks honestly around me.”

    And boy, did white people keep it completely 100 with Williams when he was growing up. He recalled how he cringed when an older white woman basically told him that his brand of blackness was better than that of people who are fully black.

    “I remember a mom of a friend of mine in the suburbs made some comment about a black person and—I had to be 12, about 60 pounds—I said something and she said, ‘Oh no, not you. You are not black. You are great.’ It was real. That f–king happened. And she meant it. And she meant it sincerely and sweetly. She was paying me a compliment,” Williams recalled.

    Williams is even aware of how some of his European features, like his blue eyes, open doors for him. He’s bringing his social-justice work through those doors and is simultaneously unraveling the idea that his European features are better than any others.

    “We are programmed to believe that someone is attractive because they told you that blue eyes are hot. I am not going to participate in that s–t,” Williams said. “I aim to do what I can with what I have. And I have my [looks]—you know, European beauty standards give me access to things.”

      I like Jesse Williams, but this is such a shallow and irritating article..

      The intro is particularly bad, annoying… and disconcerting..

      I’ve never seen ‘white’ when I see Jesse Williams – and neither do any white people – not even those who know his one white parent think of him as ‘white’…They might be a little more open to him of course because of his white parent – that much is true..

      There’s a story to be told maybe, but this is not how to tell it..

    It’s only on depressing days that I need the Internet the most. Not because I obsessively Google phantom ailments (which I do), but because I need to be reminded that all of us—the collective us, not a race us—are better than we let on. It’s that Internet moment of “the kid with the ailment scores several buckets in a high school game” or “a child’s wisdom sums up humanity for us all.”

    So I tell you that this moment, this brutally honest moment, between two white men might be the best one of them all. Not because it reminds us that we are all good, but because it speaks to the delusion, privilege and ownership that come up only after two white men argue about who owns Brooklyn, N.Y.

    In truth, I don’t know for sure whether both of the men are white, but for the purposes of this essay, let’s assume they are.

    It goes like this: Workday starts, ho-hum as always. Co-worker sends video titled “Christopher Columbus of Brooklyn.” Ears perk up and a smile spreads across my face.

    Click video, and this is what I see: a white man arguing with another white man. I was sad. Two white men yelling is quite normal on the Internet. Within seconds, it takes a turn. Almost like magic, it happens: One white guy tells the other white guy, “You’re new in this neighborhood; I’ve been in this neighborhood.”

    Shonda Rhimes is probably the busiest woman in Hollywood. Between juggling her popular TV shows and being a mother, Rhimes realized that there was one thing she was neglecting, and that was her health.

    In a recent interview with Extra, during the ShondaLand TGIT party, she explained that she lost 117 pounds by changing her eating habits and regular exercise.

    But it wasn’t easy, and she said she hated it the whole time, but Rhimes had some pretty big motivators.

    “I just decided I was going to get it together and get healthy. I have some little kids, and I want to be around them,” Rhimes told Extra.

    Rhimes has also gotten used to her new healthy lifestyle and says it’s a little bit easier.

    “Once I decided it wasn’t going to be fun, I lowered my expectations,” she explained. “It got kind of easier.”

    She added, “I actually eat everything I want to eat. I tried to make it much less and smaller portions, but what’s happened is, is that you change what your palate wants. I’m suddenly craving fish and salad. It’s upsetting,” Rhimes stated. “I’m like, ‘Where’s my cake?’’’

    On this day in 2007 the NYC African Burial Ground memorial was dedicated.

    From Wikipedia:

    The Burial Ground site is New York’s earliest known African-American “cemetery”; studies show an estimated 15,000 African American people were buried here.

    The memorial design for the 25-foot (7.6 m) granite monument features a map of the Atlantic area within the “Circle of Diaspora” in reference to the Middle Passage,by which slaves were transported from Africa to North America. It is built of stone from South Africa and from North America, to symbolize the two worlds coming together.The Door of Return, refers to “The Door of No Return”, a name given to slave ports set up for involvement with the age-old local institution of slavery on the coast of West Africa, from which so many people were transported after sale by their native chiefs, never to see their homeland again.     WASHINGTON — President Obama recently had some fatherly counsel for his 17-year-old daughter, Malia, even as he acknowledged that she might not listen to him.

    “One piece of advice that I’ve given her is not to stress too much about having to get into one particular college,” Mr. Obama told a group that included high school students in Des Moines last month. “Just because it’s not some name-brand, famous, fancy school doesn’t mean that you’re not going to get a great education there.”

    His second piece of advice, the president said as the room broke into laughter, “is keep your grades up until you get in, and after that, make sure you pass.”

    It is college application season in America, including at the White House, where Malia Obama, a senior at the elite Sidwell Friends School in Washington, is in the middle of the pressure-filled process of writing personal essays, asking for teacher recommendations and narrowing her choices.

    Reports from college newspapers and conversations with campus tour guides indicate that Malia, perhaps the nation’s most eligible 2016 college applicant, is winnowing a list of Ivy League schools, liberal arts colleges and at least one top-ranked public university. Her current grades and SAT scores are not publicly known — the first lady’s office declined to comment for this article — but Mr. Obama, for one, told the students in Des Moines that his daughter was a “hard worker” and that he did not expect her to “start feeling a little slack” in her senior year.

    Ohio Boy Suspended From School for Staring at White Girl; Court Upholds School’s Decision

    A 12-year-old boy claims that he and another student were playing the ‘staring game’ yet he was suspended in 2014 for reportedly intimidating his female classmate. A court recently upheld the suspension.

    A 12-year-old Ohio boy was suspended last year for staring at another student while playing the “staring game” and recently, a court has upheld the suspension.

    According to Fox 19, the incident happened in September 2014 at the St. Gabriel Consolidated School in Glendale, Ohio. According to the boy’s parents, who didn’t want him interviewed on camera, the two teens were engaged in a “staring game” when they claim their son was disciplined.

    “The perception is he intimidated her,” Candice Tolbert, the boy’s mother told the news station.

    “My son stared at a girl who was engaged in a staring game,” she said. “She giggled the entire time.”

    The boy’s parents filed a lawsuit in an attempt to get the suspension lifted from their son’s record, noting that the school didn’t give their son due process. The Tolberts told the news station that the incident happened on a Monday. The girl’s parents contacted the school about the incident on Tuesday and on the same day; their son was suspended and apparently wrote an apology letter without their knowledge. They claim that they were not aware of the suspension until Wednesday.

    According to court documents viewed by the news station, the girl claimed she “felt fearful.” In the apology letter written by the 12-year-old, he stated, “I never knew she was scared because she was laughing.”

      I just finished watching the sharecropping documentary you posted. The treatment of sharecroppers was unjust and horrible…yes, it WAS another form of slavery. Never was there an apology and never were there reparations given to the sharecroppers. It is a shame on those politicians and America for allowing it exist.

      Thank you for bringing sharecropping history to us this week.
