    Get Out of Jail Free: Scandal Episode 506 Recap

    For the first time since season 2, episode 2 of Scandal, I missed an episode recap. I was in Egypt last week and missed the episode. I got back on Tuesday night and was not able to get myself together fast enough to write the recap of last week’s episode before this latest episode happened. I will not do a 2 in 1 either, so I’ll just keep this party going.

    Let’s just jump into this latest Scandal episode, which was full of twists and turns. And by the end, my edges were scattered all over my floor.

    Are you ready for your daily dose of #BlackGirlMagic? Well, we’ve got it for you. Gymnasts Gabby Douglas is not the only Black gymnast breaking records and collecting medals. She’s still doing that but now there’s Simone Biles.

    We told you, back in 2014, that Biles was the one to watch. And she has certainly lived up to every bit of the hype. In 2014, she took home four Gold medals at the 2014 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Nanning, China, breaking the record for the most gold medal gymnastic wins

    And her reign doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

    Yesterday, in Glasgow, Scotland, she became the first woman to win three consecutive titles at the world championships. She won by her largest margin every. And right her, one step below her on the podium, was Gabby Douglas. You may recall that Douglas was the first American to win the Olympic gold medal since 1981. Romanian gymnast, Larisa Iordache, came in third.

    STILL A BOSS: SHONDA RHIMES SELLS SEVENTH SHOW TO ABC

    Baayyyybe, it’s looking like there’s no end in sight for Shonda Rhime’s reign. In what has to be some type of historic feat, Rhimes has secured her seventh show with ABC.

    She’s stepping away from the medical drama formula and she’s not going to be following a morally conflicted woman either.

    According to Vulture, this time, Rhimes will serve as a producer for a show called “Still Star-Crossed,” a drama loosely based off of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

    The series, created by Heather Mitchell, follows the lives of Romeo and Juliet’s families, the Capulets and Montagues, after the teenaged lovers killed themselves. Mitchell served as a producer for Shonda’s other hit show “Scandal.”

    Rhimes will serve as a producer for the show.

    ABC also picked up another Shondaland production called “Splitsville” and a yet unnamed nun drama in August.

    All of these shows will be produced through Rhimes’ company Shondaland, which she founded in 2005 and still owns today.

    I happened to be watching the Seahawks / Cowboys when this happened. It was an extremely violent collision, Lockette went down and looked as though he’d been knocked out cold. They took him away and later said it was a concussion and he has full movement. Everyone from both teams was on the field gathered around and looking really sick. I probably won’t watch much football for awhile.

    Dallas Fort Worth Area Is Ranked As A Prime Location For Black Entrepreneurs

    Good news for Black entrepreneurs in search of prime locations for business growth, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area has ranked third-best region in the U.S for black business owners.

    The latest results in a study conducted by a research website, GoodCall ranks the area as third-best in the region for Black entrepreneurs, trailing 1st ranked Washington, D.C, and Houston metro area. Coming in at No. 6 is Austin, TX, which sets the state up for a relatively strong contender for successful locations for black entrepreneurs.

    One of the leading factors in starting or maintaining a new business as a black entrepreneur is location. There are many considerations to be made when trying to determine the factors that make the business a success. Once a stellar location is identified, the remaining efforts of the business plan can fall into play and establish a foundation for a positive return on the investment.

    The study conducted by GoodCall identified business location rankings based on the quantity of Black-owned businesses per 1,000 residents, the year-over-year GDP change, percentage of Blacks in the area with a bachelor’s degree or higher and the unemployment rate. All of these factors were used to determine the areas that presented the best opportunities of success for Black entrepreneurs.

    1.9 million U.S businesses are owned by African-Americans, but that number is still far less than 8% of all businesses. Although the number of Black-owned businesses has increased 60.5% since 2002, there is still a long ways to go.

    Ben Carson‘s freshly-minted status as arguable Republican frontrunner has thrust the retired brain surgeon and former knife aficionado under an ever-intensifying media microscope. In one of the many getting-to-know-Carson segments you’ll be seeing these days, a white Republican strategist and a black Democratic strategist reached a rare point of agreement on the root of Dr. Carson’s appeal, and while neither of them said it exactly how I would have said it, the general gist is something that I’ve been saying for months. Ben Carson is just another avatar for white male resentment, a Donald Trump for people who mind being called racist, and who won’t vote for a woman.

    On Sunday’s episode of Up, host Richard Lui asked Republican strategist and Irish Name Generator O’Brien Murray what Carson’s appeal was to a group of Republican voters, and Murray explained that Carson was a “black man attacking a black president.” Democratic strategist L. Joy Williams agreed, but put it in slightly different terms:

    Why Marco Rubio is so effective and dangerous

    Marco Rubio bashed the mainstream media with great gusto last night, eliciting roars of approval from GOP voters. Amusingly enough, the emerging media consensus appears to be that his attacks on them were brilliantly executed, never mind that they were pressed into service to evade just the sort of legitimate questions the media has been pressing him upon.

    But it’s worth drilling down on one key reason why Rubio is so effective and dangerous — to his GOP opponents, and potentially in a general election as well. It’s this: Rubio knows how to feed the angry preoccupations of many GOP base voters while simultaneously coming across as hopeful and optimistic.

    The expectation going into last night’s debate was that a showdown was inevitable between Rubio and fellow Floridian Jeb Bush, who has to reassert his position as the dominant establishment alternative to Donald Trump (or, now, Ben Carson, though his rise seems likely to prove fleeting). This required putting Rubio, who is trying to usurp that role, in his place.

    A lot of conservative primary voters may well hear such talk and conclude Jeb Bush is talking down to them — that he mostly has contempt for their preoccupations and fears. But Rubio has shown an ability to speak directly to those preoccupations and fears while simultaneously sounding the sort of hopeful, optimistic, forward-looking tone that fits comfortably with Jeb’s theory about the need to broaden the party’s demographic appeal.

    This isn’t just because Rubio is young and Latino. His formula is a bit complicated. Last night, Rubio, in what appeared to be an appeal to the deep resentment of many of these voters, skillfully converted legitimate questions about his personal financial management into evidence of Democratic and elite media contempt for his relatively humble upbringing, which he proceeded to explain he had overcome through hard work. Rubio’s narrative is both laden with legitimate resentment and inspiring!

    How Jeb Bush may have just outsourced a key part of his campaign

    In what was already a grim week for the Jeb Bush campaign, a bit more bad news late Thursday night.

    After a meeting in Houston on Monday, the campaign sent parts of a presentation to reporters detailing how they saw the race moving forward. But the day after Bush’s inept debate performance, U.S. News and World Report obtained the whole document, including detailed plans for what the campaign had — or, really, hadn’t — done so far in Iowa.

    The Iowa Starting Line blog was stunned by what it saw. “[A] brief look at their Iowa numbers show extremely troubling signs for Bush’s viability in the the caucus,” wrote Pat Rynard, assessing a spreadsheet full of single-digit numbers that represented the campaign’s outreach in the state. Rynard summarizes: “[Y]ou don’t even have to be a former caucus or Iowa campaign staffer to realize how troubling their internal Iowa metrics look.”

    Another embarrassment in a tough week.

    Seeking America’s ‘lost’ greatness and finding Trump most appealing

    The way Joe McCoy sees it, the last time America was great was when Ronald Reagan was president, when people played by the rules. No, it was in the ’70s, Holly Martin says, when you could depend on Americans to work hard. No, to find true American greatness, Steve Trivett contends, you need to go back to before the Vietnam War, “when you could still own a home and have a good job even if you didn’t have a college education.”

    Even if they don’t have “Make America Great Again” campaign caps, Donald Trump’s supporters easily recite the signature slogan of the real estate developer’s insurgent presidential bid. And even if they don’t agree on exactly why the country lost its way, they do accept — give or take a few degrees of hyperbole — Trump’s contention that the United States has become, as he has put it, “an economic wasteland” that is “committing cultural suicide.”

    The premise behind “Make America Great Again” is that the country is no longer great. It can be great again, and the campaign has a certain can-do billionaire in mind as the guy to make that happen, but at the moment, the leading contender for the nomination of the party that regularly touts the notion of American exceptionalism is arguing that the country ain’t what it used to be.

    Jeb Bush’s campaign, wounded after another mediocre debate performance, is bracing for the possibility that revenue dries up in the coming weeks ahead.

    It’s a striking turn for a campaign that had embarked on a “shock and awe” approach to fundraising and then delivered a record-breaking haul of $114 million of hard money and super PAC dollars during the first half of the year.

    After Wednesday’s bruising in the third GOP debate, Bush spent much of the latter half of this week responding to media questions about whether his presidential bid is now “terminal” or “on life support.” The candidate didn’t do himself any favors with his seemingly pained delivery of “having lots of fun” when asked if he’s enjoying himself on the trail.

    Ryan dismisses calls for family leave law

    New Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Sunday dismissed Democrats’ calls for a paid family leave law as another “federal entitlement,” and said his position isn’t at odds with recent remarks that he wants to spend weekends with his young family in Wisconsin.

    “I don’t think people asked me to be Speaker so I can take more money from hard-working taxpayers, so I can create some new federal entitlement,” Ryan said during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” “But I think the public wants to have members of Congress that represent them, that are like them.

    “Don’t you want your member of Congress to be a citizen legislator who lives with you, among you, who has your own kinds of concerns, who wants to spend time with his children on Saturdays and Sundays?”

    Congressman: ‘No Way’ Comprehensive Immigration Reform Will Happen, Even After Obama

    It’s been widely reported that newly-elected Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) won’t bring immigration reform legislation to the House floor while President Obama remains in office. What’s been mentioned less is what will happen when Obama is gone.

    According to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Ryan promised the House’s ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus in a closed-door meeting that he won’t bring comprehensive immigration reform to the floor even after a new president is elected — that is, unless he can ensure that the majority of House Republicans will vote for it. And Jordan pointed out that it’s very unlikely that the majority of Republicans will ever support anything comprehensive.

    “We got assurances on the immigration issue and this comprehensive Gang-of-Eight-type of plan that that’s not going to happen,” Jordan told radio host Laura Ingraham on Friday. “And frankly, in the next Congress, there’s no way something like that moves unless the majority of our conference supports it. And the majority of our conference, as you rightly point out, doesn’t support that.”

    Was reminded over at BJ that the hissyfit the GOP threw over the debate had nothing to do with the debate – it was cover so that the GOP could cancel the next debate – which was to be on NBC associated property-TELEMUNDO.
