Saturday Open Thread | #DNCLeaks: Debbie Wasserman Schultz furiously pressured MSNBC

DEM 2016 PlatformDebbie Wasserman Schultz, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, was furious when she was criticized by MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski.

Wasserman Schultz called for Brzezinski to “apologize” and told her co-worker Chuck Todd “this must stop.” The DNC chair even complained to MSNBC’s president.

In May, Brzezinski held a segment on the program “Morning Joe” in which she condemned Wasserman Schultz’s “unfair” treatment of Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary.

“This has been very poorly handled from the start. It has been unfair, and they haven’t taken him seriously, and it starts, quite frankly, with the person that we just heard speaking,” Brzezinski said, referring to Wasserman Schultz.

“She should step down,” Brzezinski added.

In a May 18 email, Kate Houghton, the director of the DNC chair’s office, forwarded a report on Brzezinski’s segment to Wasserman Schultz.

“This is the LAST straw,” Wasserman Schultz replied, enraged. “This is outrageous. She needs to apologize.”

Wasserman Schultz asked DNC Communications Director Luis Miranda to call Phil Griffin, the president of MSNBC.

Miranda responded noting that Wasserman Schultz “already went to Chuck,” a reference to MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, moderator of “Meet the Press.”

Wasserman Schultz sent another angry message to Todd titled, “Chuck, this must stop.” She included the link to the report on Brzezinski’s segment and wrote, “I would like to discuss this with you today.”

Todd replied noting he was available to speak with her. She thanked him and said Miranda would schedule a time to talk.

Wasserman Schultz was insistent: “I think we need to speak to both of them,” she wrote, referring to Chuck Todd and Phil Griffin, the MSNBC president.

She added, “I’ve been talking to Phil about this since our breakfast.”

WikiLeaks released approximately 20,000 DNC emails on Friday. Another email shows that Wasserman Schultz called the attempt by the Sanders campaign to moderate the party’s stance on Israel “disturbing.”

The DNC chair has long been criticized for anti-Sanders bias. Wasserman Schultz served as co-chair of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, and is a longtime Clinton ally.

Holy Crap, Tim Kaine Just Killed It In His First Speech With Clinton

He spoke Spanish to the cheering crowds and delivered a healthy dose of humility in a diseased election year. In other words, Tim Kaine just took America by storm.

    Holy crap. He killed it.
I’m not trying to spin you. I’m sitting here in shock. Shock. Tim Kaine was unbelievable.

He was natural. He was smart. He was relaxed and funny, and he was serious. He was proud of himself and his wife and family but never arrogant. He was humble without ever being cloying in that way the politically humble can often be. He was genuine. He was unbelievable.

And part of the way through, this thought struck me: He is the perfect choice for her because he comes across as so at ease and so real. These are two things, as we know, that Hillary Clinton has a lot of trouble with. She’s too scripted, she’s a phony, all that stuff. Kaine was just so easy-breezy, so comfortable with himself and in this role, that he has the potential to wash away a decent chunk of that negativity about her.

The Devil is a Walking Cheeto Running for President
    Awesomely Luvvie — July 22, 2016

The Devil doesn’t wear Prada. He wears a self-branded suit that’s made in China as he rails against immigrants and threatens to build a Wall as if anyone who isn’t American is a White Walker. The Long Night is here. Note: I’m sorry but there are just too many Game of Thrones parallels in this election cycle.

We knew this was happening. But for it to really happen, it’s like “oh so this is the gateway to hell.” I see. Where is the beast we were threatened with? Well, that squirrel-wig adorned monster, Donald Trump, is the official Republican nominee for President. The man who folks laughed at when he declared he was even running in the first place. The man who folks said would not get far in the race. That man beat the rest and stood on a stage and proudly accepted his presidential nomination.

That man, who folks say “cannot win” has defied all the jokes til now and he is the last GOP man standing. In a field of weeds, the most rotten weed refused to be plucked out, and has spread its filth across the grass. Now we have nothing but weeds because we let it grow. We gave it room. And here we are, with brown grass. The green is gone.

And that ignoramus accepted by giving a speech that was full of lies, thinly veiled racism, islamophobia, more lies, and just overall nutbaggery. The man is a power-hungry sociopath and I am more frightened than ever that he will get into the White House and we are all doomed.

NC GOP Chair to Cruz backers: Find your own way home
    July 22, 2016

North Carolina Republican Chairman Robin Hayes, who flew a private plane to the Republican National Convention, told two fellow delegates who had supported Sen. Ted Cruz’s defiant speech that he wasn’t giving them a ride home, the McClatchy Tribune reports.

Said Hayes: “I think you need to ride the bus home.”

“The episode underscores the fact that after four days of drama — and one memorable speech — unity remains elusive for North Carolina Republicans.”

Atty. refuses to remove Black Lives Matter pin, taken into custody
A Youngstown Municipal Court judge sentenced Atty. Andrea Burton to 5 days in jail, but the decision is being appealed
    Published: July 22, 2016, 11:49 am

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – An attorney was removed from court and taken into custody after a judge declared her in contempt for refusing to take off a Black Lives Matter pin.

Youngstown Municipal Court Judge Robert Milich said Attorney Andrea Burton was in contempt of court for refusing to remove the pin in his courtroom as instructed. Burton was sentenced to five days in jail, but she has been released on a stay while an appeal is underway.

Burton will stay out of jail during the appeals process as long as she obeys Milich’s order not to wear items that make a political statement in court. If she loses her appeal, she will have to serve the five days in jail.

Milich said his opinions have nothing to do with his decision

Yes; I feel you Charles. That’s the intent, to tire us out, and invoke, fear, discord, chaos, and apathy.

It’s a form of DOMESTIC TERRORISM, this election season.

Andrea GREENSPAN Mitchell & Joy Reid are as GIDDY as tow high school CHEERLEADERS today.
The media is all over the TV today, touting Kaine’s character and impressive record.

Andrea GREENPAN is hanging the acceptance of the Clinton/Kaine ticket on PBO. It’s up to him to get those NEGROES on board with this DEBACLE.

I’m not buying the scare tactics of a Trump/Pence presidency or a half-baked Tim Kaine CV spouting hi Civil Rights activism as a battering ram to vote for the HILSTER.

Remember how Bernie Sanders’ Civil Rights activism was heckled and ridiculed?

I’m not going to be intimidated into the “If you don’t vote for Hillary, it’s a VOTE FOR TRUMP.
I absolutely am not going to accept responsibility for the outcome of this CLUSTERFUCK election.

My vote I my decision, and I will sleep just fine, no matter the outcome.

    • Liza says:

This was so predictable, Hillary struggling even against the GOP nominee from hell. The DNC has played a dangerous game, and they still could lose. Kaine may secure Virginia’s 13 electoral votes for the Democrats, but beyond that, he only matters if Hillary is elected and passes away or is removed from office.

      • Ametia says:

LOL Kaine looks so uncomfortable, cheesy grin and all. And that speech was obviously written by Clinton camp for him, to PRAISE the Hillster. Sooooo transparent.

Obama signs into law opioid addiction bill to protect newborns
    WASHINGTON | By Duff Wilson

President Barack Obama on Friday signed into law a measure that pledges greater efforts to protect drug-dependent newborns and assist their parents.

The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act also stresses drug treatment and overdose prevention to help stanch the nation’s heroin and opioid drug epidemic.

Obama said in a statement that 78 Americans die from opioid overdose every day, and noted that the legislation included only modest steps to address the epidemic.

“I am deeply disappointed that Republicans failed to provide any real resources for those seeking addiction treatment to get the care that they need,” Obama said. “In fact, they blocked efforts by Democrats to include $920 million in treatment funding.”

The bill was passed nearly unanimously by both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Efforts to enforce provisions to protect newborns and help their parents come in response to a Reuters investigation last year titled “Helpless & Hooked.”

  15. Liza says:

I’m not changing my voter registration until after the election for fear that it will get screwed up somehow. But, after the election, I will no longer be a Democrat. From now until they bury me. I can’t forgive them for this election, for what the DNC did to Bernie Sanders and their own voters, especially those who refused to line up for the coronation of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

    • Ametia says:

      DITTO!

Joy Reid is as happy as a pig rolling around in shit today, awaiting Clinton & Kaine’ arrivial on stage

      • Liza says:

Yeah, well, Ms. Joy might should study Nate Silver’s election forecast model. Since he was 50 for 50 in 2012, Democrats should be concerned. If Florida starts to poll in Trump’s favor, the statistical probability of Clinton winning should cause the Democrats to weep and wail and gnash their teeth.

However, I suspect the convention will give them a bounce in the polls. POTUS, FLOTUS, Bernie, Joe and a few other likable folks will be there. So, July might end with better numbers for Clinton in Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, but whether or not that can be sustained is anyone’s guess.

Trump can apparently do or say anything and his supporters don’t care. I think it’s pretty obvious that “Trump is the Devil from Hell” is not going to win Florida (most importantly) or Ohio, both of which are up for grabs. Democrats better bring it and quickly.

  16. Parker is with me today. She’s throwing her sippy cup out of the playpen. :)

  17. Liza says:

Trump’s numbers have improved since yesterday on Nate Silver’s election forecast model. Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have moved closer to Trump. This ain’t good, y’all.
