Open Thread | The Endless Cletus Safaris….and Yet, the MSM Can’t Bother to Try and Find Biden Voters

There is no accident to this.
We care about little-d DEMOCRACY.
We care about body autonomy.
We care about voting rights.
We care about the environment.
We care about our children going to school and not getting shot.
We care about working people and policies that will help them. Help the little guy.

The Media Still Doesn’t Get Biden Voters

Bidenists are bothered by manipulations of our political process. They don’t like what they see as a stolen Supreme Court seat, as Senate Republicans made up a new rule to block an Obama nominee in 2016 and then reversed their own rule to confirm a Trump nominee in 2020. Or in the case of state governments, Bidenists don’t like when Republican state legislators gerrymander themselves into disproportionate power, as in Wisconsin. Obviously Democrats don’t like the policy results that have arisen from the rightward shift of the Supreme Court or the undemocratically skewed state governments, but more would accept the policies if it weren’t for the manipulations that made them possible.

Bidenists mostly don’t care about “wokeness.” I don’t mean that they use different terminology than critics for the same thing, I mean it’s way down their list of priorities, if it’s on there at all. Anti-wokeness is primarily an elite fixation or right-wing culture war bugaboo.

Bidenists don’t like banning books, distorting African-American history, trying to silence gay teachers, or retaliating against companies for criticizing politicians.

Bidenists want the United States to support Ukraine, and see Vladimir Putin’s Russia as an American adversary, not a model of white Christian masculinity or an ally against domestic enemies.

Bidenists don’t particularly care about Hunter Biden. He doesn’t work in government, and has no influence over policy. But they won’t defend his unethical or criminal actions, certainly not the way Republicans defend Trump’s corrupt children, because Bidenism isn’t a cult of personality, and Bidenists value rule of law.

Bidenists care a lot more about what leading politicians, media figures, and business leaders are doing than about nutpicked posters on social media, and think the claims that radical leftists dominate all institutions are insane.

Overall, Bidenists are pretty earnest. And if the Trumpist right, the far left, and the above-it-all center keep assuming everyone is as disillusioned as they are, they’ll keep getting it wrong.

I admit, I’ve been watching it on TikTok.

I told Peanut that instead of investing in the local Black population, which in Alabama, is close to 30%, they took the other route of keeping it White by getting out- of-state students and giving them phucking MERIT scholarships.

#BamaRush shows what’s wrong with public higher ed

Another school year has arrived, and with it, another season of Panhellenic sorority recruitment at the University of Alabama. #BamaRush has gone viral on TikTok in recent years, featuring an endless stream of young women discussing their “OOTD” (outfit of the day) and the drama of being a “PNM” (prospective new member). The phenomena was even the subject of a recent documentary.

Whether one follows #BamaRush for the sake of escapism, bewilderment, or mockery, there is plenty to deconstruct. One oddity is that many women who participate are actually not from the state of Alabama. In fact, last year only 42 percent of the school’s students came from Alabama. #BamaRush is not just a racialized system (the schools sororities were unofficially segregated until 2013), it’s a system shaped by a troubling shift in college admissions: public universities heavily recruit out-of-state students from affluent, predominantly white high schools because as nonresidents they pay higher tuition.

The University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa is one of the most egregious offenders, which explains how #BamaRush is full of women who came to UA from outside of the state. This is not an accident. Research shows that UA has recruited more widely across the country than basically any other state school. In 2017, just 9% of 4,349 high school visits by University of Alabama admissions representatives were made within the state. Those reps only visited one-third of the state’s public high schools, and the ones they visited were “concentrated in relatively affluent, predominantly white communities.” Researcher Karina Salazar calls this practice “recruitment redlining,” where universities purposefully avoid predominantly Black high schools and go out of their way to visit predominantly white ones.

These actions shape who shows up at UA, whether it’s for sorority rush or the first day of class. While the state of Alabama is 27 percent Black, the UA student body was only 11 percent Black in 2021. Some may blame the discrepancy on Black students for “not wanting to come” to a place like UA, which was only desegregated after President Kennedy sent in the National Guard in 1963. Little is said about how UA actively pursues nonresident students from affluent high schools — ironically, by showering them with merit scholarships in order to build a pipeline of nonresident applicants, instead of prioritizing need-based aid for state residents.
